Hi guys, just like to apologize for the noobness about to come, after looking around for 2 days im still no clearer at all...
So i have a new HTC Desire Z and i have the latest firmware that is officially released, no modding or anything yet has been done to the phone and im using sense 2.1...
Ok so im looking to modify my phone to get the latest sense 2.3 and to also be able to customize the phone a bit more then just changing themes other then just htc sense ones...
I dont understand at all if i need to root or the correct way to root on a desire z as ive read that some ways can brick the phone....
I also dont know if i need a new rom or where to get the from, again i heard that some are stable and some not and some can cause semi bricking. I also dont know if htc sense is part of the os or if it can be changed without altering anything else...
Im sure ill have more questions but thats in advance to all that can help.
Ps i also dont mind 1on1 msn help just send me a pm and ill give you my email address
Thank you

Hello and welcome to the boards. XDA is a great place to ask questions and learn techniques and procedures to get the most out of your device. You just have to think and ask the right questions, or risk being targeted (it happens sometimes =p).
First, I think we need some basic information:
Do you have the Desire Z or the T-Mobile G2 variant? Since you are asking about Sense, I want to assume you have the DZ, but just want to make sure.
What is the current baseband (build version)?
Do you have root yet?
Are you S-OFF yet?
As for ROMs, feel free to browse around the Dev Forums. Here are my recommendations, I've used all of them in the past or am currently using them right now.
Stable Sense (2.1) GB (2.3) ROM: Virtuous Sense from the Virtuous Team.
Stable Sense (3.0) GB (2.3) ROM: Virtuous Unity from the Virtuous Team.
Stable AOSP GB (2.3) ROM: Virtuous G-Lite from the Virtuous Team.
Stable MIUI GB (2.3.5) ROM: MIUI.us Official English from MIUI.us.
I have not used Cyanogen Nightlies because I'm not too keen on flashing almost every night. Those ROMs are for people who like to be on the bleeding edge IMO. The above recommendations are for stability and daily usage.
As a note, Sense ROMs take alot of resources to run and may be laggy at the start. That's the price to pay for Social Networking Integration and other convenience items (nicer widgets, etc...). AOSP variants will be quicker and use less memory, but they don't come with convenience options.

Im not rooted or s-off, my phone is on orange and is a desire Z.
My os is 2.3.3 and sense 2.1
Ive read somewhere in a sticky maybe to not flash virtuous... But im not sure if thats a pre-caution... I must admit im a sucker for the sense ui with its flashy looks and animations lol,
Ive heard of miui too... Another reason for wanting to do this is to remove default apps, i find it rather annoying to look thru about 5 map apps (and i dont really know which one is good or not...) And a bunch of other things when i only use facebook msn and occasionally skype. Other default apps ive probably never and wil never touch.
The sense 3.0 is the version i was thinking of btw not 2.3 (was thinking of gb) and yes stability and daily use is very much a priority as i am a noob and probably should start somewhere easy lol.
Thanks again for helping (searches for thx button in app xD)

I disliked sense ever since i got my G2.
I found CM7 far superior to all of the sense roms. Though i do miss the contact linking sense does.

CM7? Lol, contact linking is useful as i am lazy and i can use contact linking to get hold of most people i kno easily however skype seems to dislike linking as some of my contacts have linked to ALL of my skype contacts.
I guess im confused about where to start as there seems to be a lot of conflicting statements, sense seems to be a.... UI overlay ontop of the standard android os, is sense the only one of its kind or is there others that are different from the android UI?
Again thanks a lot and sorry if this seems so nooby, im just trying to gather info and links before i run into problems and ask more nooby questions.

I suggest starting with some of these links.

Read, read, read. And after you've done that, read some more.
I spent months before finally making the decision to crack open this phone and load CM7, pouring over everything I could find regarding not only how to do it, but the "whys" of what I am doing. Understanding the inner workings of what you are doing will make the process much much simpler once you finally do it.
I'm still fairly new to the android game. I came from the iphone scene, where if you wanted to get the full power of the phone all you had to do was click once and be done with it. The android way may be more complicated at times, but is much more fun, and rewarding. Once you become familiar with it all, you will never want to turn back.
My suggestion, as a fellow newbie:
1) Read: Understand what you are up against
2) Plan: Decide what you want to do. Do you just want root? Flash Roms? What Roms do you want? etc.
3) Gather: Get together all the information you'll need. Phone info, tutorials, etc. Write it down if necessary, but make sure it is all handy in case it is needed or you have to run IRC/forums for help.
4) Attack: Pull the trigger and do it.
5) ???
6) Profit.
Yea... I understand how much noobs annoy people however i also know that people should ask in appropriate places and get all the info needed so they dont act like a pro when they have no clue, i was started to get a good idea of things until i got all confused as there is no... Archive type forum for roms and stickies about what is good or bad yet im never sure if these are to warn every1 or jus noobs.
I greatly appreciate help though im looking forward to my experience with android, thanks on the beginner links too. If any1 else has any other recommended links or recommendations at all i would be appreciative!

Well from my understanding, there are several different ways to accomplish the same thing when it comes to rooting and getting ready to flash. I followed the XDA wiki method and had no issues.
If you're confused about ROMs, there are usually a handful of stable, widely used ones. MIUI, Cyanogen, and Virtuous seems to be the most popular. I know you had mentioned wanting Sense 3.0, so Virtuous Unity might be the way to go for you.
Feel free to shoot me a PM if you have any questions. If I don't have the answer I'm sure I can dig it up somewhere.

I think you mean the sticky thread warning not to use the Visionary tool to root, as it has been known to screw up the memory partitions and possibly lead to a soft brick. This has nothing to do with the Virtuous ROMs, which are excellent, and mostly what I run on my Desire Z.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1025135
Stick with the method in the Wiki to root. Its not that hard, and its considered the safest way.
As said above, read, read, and read some more. And always ask questions, we love to help out. If you like sense, I hear the virtuous sense 3.0 rom is pretty sweet, though most roms over in development are great.

Development? Im assuming you mean in the desire Z android development... Is it worth browsing other forums that are not in the desire Z sub forum? Or would they just give confusing information about other android based phones. Oh and can i safely rely on these recommended roms to have good keyboard support for the slide out keyboard

It could be worth it, but if you're feeling overwhelmed maybe not. I hang out in the Nook Color forums as well. Something things will carry over. As long as you can understand the similarities (what is a ROM, etc) and differences (rooting methods, etc). You'll be fine.
hi to everyone,
i'm not new to XDA (i'm nexus s user), but i'm new to desire section
my friend need to upgrade his desire to gingerbread 2.3, possibly with Sense UI
like you know, this is possible only with a custom ROM. so the question is:
Which ROM (possibly with Sense) is the best today (11-04-12) ???
imho best is:
1-stable
2-without bugs
3-fast
thanks

The reason you are getting all these insults is because you say that you are not new to xda yet you act like you are. It's not that you posted on the wrong section, it's because you asked a very common question that could have been answered by you doing a search query.
Or you could just say in one sentence which you think is the best sense rom. Jeezzz i dont understand why you take the effort to complain but cant answer a simple question.
In my opinion, cooldroid v3 is the best sense rom for the htc desire. Its a sens 2.1 based rom, which makes it very fast
yes, specify what stable mean perhaps is too much, but the main reason because i ask you is that with google and search function i've found only old information ......
if my previous question make your brain loop, just tell me which ROM are you using ..... ok ?

your question it's like "what's the best color?", we can't answer this, just try some roms and find it urself, in my opinion, all sense roms are stable, 3.5 doesn't match too fine as we want, but's usable anyway... ginger + 2.1 it's more fastest but idk...

development is still pretty active, despite the desire being the best part of 2 years old, so many of the roms there fulfill all your requirements, therefore in your honest opinion, nearly all are the best
even if you get many more replies from other users about what ROM they are using, it's only from users who can be bothered to post here, whereas most post in the rom threads themselves. experiences are often conflicting. one user's experience (AMAZING) with a rom can be completely different (LAGGGGGYYYY BUGGGYYYY) from another, which will only confuse you further. why? many combinations of apps/sync/launcher/kernel/hardware. most importantly, we all use the phone differently...
and in the time that it takes for people to post here and argue over which is AWESOME ROCK SOLID STABLE, NO BUGS, SOOO FAST and DEFINITELY THE BEST ROM EVER!!!!!11 you could have formed your own opinion by reading a snapshot of the threads, even install a couple and try them out, which is definitely the 'best' way of discovery.
which hopefully gives some further insight as to why best rom threads are pretty pointless...
there is no best ROM, only the best ROM for your needs (or your friend's needs in this case)
good luck, i hope you find will the best one, i'm still looking
Thanks. Soon I'll flash one off them and tell you which....

yeah cause I had tons of overheating, and resets with the other roms, especially when on 3G, or GPS... which was annoying... as for this one, I'm absolutely satisfied with
no overheating
good CPU clock
nice apps
lots of room on internal storage
those are perfect values for me, though someone else may have a different opinion
as for the minor buggs
it auto dials +1 in dialer (that's the one I've seen so far)
but You just get a new dialer from the market and problem solved
Sandvolds ICS 0.6.
IMO this is best for me.

For me it's Sandvold's ICS for Desire.
It has great support and works like a charm for the most part.
It has one or two major and some minor issues but that is to be expected it is still a beta mind you.
Overall its the best rom for my tastes. Its still under development and updates are released as much as twice a week. The development team and specifically Sandvold is always on the case solving issues and helping where he can.
im a new owner of this awesome devices was previously an htc evo user then went to the evil world of iphones then got out for the galaxy s3 the evo had so much more development and porting but i miss the htc sense would any dev please attempt a sense 3.5 or 4 or even 2,0 to our devices
That's borderline impossible. Completely different framework and kernels. There is a team working on bringing sense to Samsung, sense4all,I believe. Its not something the average person can manage to do.

not necessarly true a new kernel would have to be created but not impossible if htc devices can get touchwiz booting the s3 def can have sense booting 2 sense4all was successfully created for the galaxy s3 international problem is thats a completly diffrent hardware then the sgh i747 im really looking forward to the deving on this device its nice and powerfull and i hope that more people get on the dev scene on this

Yes a new kernel would be needed. The difference in the sense based stuff in an htc kernel does not directly work with a Samsung device of the same processors. The ram disk needs to be modified, correct drivers would either need to be made or modded, that's just for the basics. I'm not including adding in the camera, sound, radio, touchscreen etc stuff. Those a specific to each different device with the newer versions of android now of days.
I can't just directly port over a touchwiz ROM an drop it on my phone, so much work goes into it. If you do get the kernel built correctly, more problems arise. Gotta rework the framework to match the Samsung phone, including HTC's framework among other HTC specific files.
What HTC phone has a full booting touchwiz rom?
Not to mention a lot of Sense drivers are closed source and proprietary.

That video doesn't prove that is a full touchwiz Rom. Then your link is only for the launcher, yet again that doesn't prove anything at all. The Rom is just a stripped out sense Rom(ie senseless)with touchwiz launcher an possibly ui. It's not a full touchwiz rom.

The ui alone is possible but not very sure how stable it'll be though. Probably the main reason nobody has done is: 1. They just don't care about sense. 2. There no demand for sense on the device or 3.nobody thought of it yet?

The level of activity in development in this particular forum is relatively low although the devs have come up with some pretty genius things I will start this venture and if I am able to get a beta launcher application of sense ui. I will post in the development for testing and see how well it'll catch on I'm not much of a dev. But will give it a shot.

This^ Previous phone was the GNex and it was unbelievable how many variants and kangs there were for CM10, AOKP, etc. I ran a lot of them but in the end there wasn't all that much that was different from the original rom. In a lot of cases, the variant ran worse.

Quality is always better than quantity
Like was mentioned above, some phones have 200 Rom threads, but really what's the difference between the Rom? They (aosp variants) are 90% cm based with varying mods pulled from aokp source with pa stuff as well
Really, no disrespect intended those 3 aosp roms are all that matter as everything else is just mashed up and derivative of them
As for sense, you only really need a few roms as well; something stock for those who only want root and a few basic mods, some kind of aroma Rom with user configurable options, and or a rom with a lot if built in mods (well you don't need them lol)
Really imo if you have 5 or 6 roms that meet the above criteria you are set
Unless you have a need to flash a different rom every day that has 1 more bs script or 1 different mod in it
The end user doesn't always see the forest from the trees
I agree with what has been said already. Quality is better than quantity... My old S2 had about 194873 ^6 worth of different roms. Touchwiz this and AOSP that and don't forget the AOKP, with CM and a side of Sense ports. In the end I dropped myself on a really good rom called The Blu Kuban which was headed up by rujelus22 over in the Epic 4g Touch development forum. I ran that rom for about 18 months before I nix'd my device and went over to the red side here at Verizon. I heard he went forth to the S4 and has kept that rom's traditions alive. He was one dev who was helped by the many and made a rom that many made their daily drivers just like I did.
I know we have a good community over here as well as even before beaups dropped rumrunner on us we had a few devs tinkering with their roms.
Now remember! A community is only as good as the people around it. Support your devs any way you can if it's simple donations or a click of the thanks buttons. But most of all, be part of the community. List the bugs you find in the roms, mods, and tweaks. Help the devs make the best they can and we all prosper.
I'd still like to see old Sense on this phone. Like Sense 3 or 4.
I'd also like to see a CM variant built off Sense base. Like the old style ROMs that had all full Sense apk compatibility but no Sense launcher. Not sure if this is doable with Sense 5 though.
And last but not least, hopefully a dev will pick up Ubuntu Touch.
Just a daydreamin' wishlist.. lol

Consumer choice is always a win. I'd kill for a thread with five million views and fifty three thousand replies. Developers in different sections have had months to build their own form of paradise. Android Revolution HD has fullSnapdragon 600 (GPU) rendering. I want to try that.

thats a bs mod that requires the deleting of a lib (and does nothing)
the end user might enjoy that, real developers know the work done in roms and can sort out the differences between fancy features in a changelog and real code changes and development
views and posts have nothing to do with the work that go into a rom....you can have a thread that explodes because it has a leaked version of sense, a large user base of a rom that drives discussion and hypes upcoming releases, massive bug issues that require help and dicussion, new hboots or firmware needed to run new updates and so on
thread views and # of posts, as well as individual member post count and thanks count is really deceptive and a TERRIBLE barometer of worth in the development community
the best and most important kernel, rom, root exploit, recovery and so on developers that exist in the android world often have a relatively low post and thanks count, whereas guys who release stock deodexed roms made with a rom kitchen in cygwin have tens of thousands of posts and thanks which leads new users and even more experienced ones to inflate their value and skillsets

thats a bs mod that requires the deleting of a lib (and does nothing)
the end user might enjoy that, real developers know the work done in roms and can sort out the differences between fancy features in a changelog and real code changes and development
views and posts have nothing to do with the work that go into a rom....you can have a thread that explodes because it has a leaked version of sense, a large user base of a rom that drives discussion and hypes upcoming releases, massive bug issues that require help and dicussion, new hboots or firmware needed to run new updates and so on
thread views and # of posts, as well as individual member post count and thanks count is really deceptive and a TERRIBLE barometer of worth in the development community
the best and most important kernel, rom, root exploit, recovery and so on developers that exist in the android world often have a relatively low post and thanks count, whereas guys who release stock deodexed roms made with a rom kitchen in cygwin have tens of thousands of posts and thanks which leads new users and even more experienced ones to inflate their value and skillsets
developers can generally sort out whos who amongst themselves, but its unfortunate that the end user often cant; usually through no fault of their own

Perhaps you should stick to answering the questions you were asked. In any case, it would be smarter to back a winning horse.

Not to start a war, but I'm going to give you benefit of doubt you probably don't know him. What he said is true.. And you probably just proved his point too.
His work on other devices is proof of that. Give it time, we will see more options now that the crowd is turning more s-off.

I know what he said is true and I don't care. CPU vs GPU. That interests me.
This ROM looks absolutely fantastic. Any developers have insight as to how we can get this working on our Verizon HTC One's?
Android Revolution HD
I've done some reading and tried this Sense-to-Sense porting guide with no luck.
Thoughts? Ideas? Halp?
I'm no expert but we'll likely see more ports once 4.3 comes out for us.
Does he have a ROM for the one? Need to look at his github

He has a ROM for the One but its for the GSM version. I asked him if he's going to port to Verizon and he said NO. Sad...=(
Well like cm I'm sure you can port it over. Just ask some devs on this forum to get you started. @Flyhalf205 or somebody like him can help I'm sure

My rom uses the exact same base. Not saying it's exactly the same however.
But what exactly is it about the rom that interests you?
Is there something it claims to offer that the roms we already have don't?
Just trying to understand all this desire to port other roms that have the same base as existing roms already ported and available.
What features makes it different or more desirable?
Maybe some insight may help others to understand and therefor justify why any Dev would port something from another Dev, when he has done the work already for his own port/rom.
Trying to understand what the draw is, that's all.
Is it the more well known "name" on it?
Go ask the creator of the ROM for permission to port and I will see about porting it over if I get the time.

If you look at OP Post #1 here is the sharing policy, I've already messaged mike already to inform him... If you could pull this off FlyHalf that would be AWESOME. I have friends using this ROM and they totally swear by it (full GPU UI rendering, all the underhood tweaks make this rom quick, CPU governor performance).
This forum is about sharing. If you want to use any part of my work, please feel free to do it but remember about some simple rules:
Inform me about using my work by sending me a message. You don’t need my permission, just inform me.
Include link to my thread from where you took particular files.
Give proper credits for what you used.
When it comes to using my ROM as a base you are free to do it only if I don't have "Stock ROMs" thread available for particular device. If such thread exists, you are
obligated to take ROMs from there instead. These threads with "Stock ROMs" are usually updated within 24 hours from the moment when I release my custom ROM.
Sharing is one thing, but please respect some areas of my work like:
ROM name - "Android Revolution HD", "Android Revolution", "Revo HD", "AR HD" etc.
Graphics used in my threads, especially head-banners designed exclusivity for me.
Other parts of my work that are not supposed to be used by others without proper permission.
Reguardless if he lets me. I will still port it to myself. May even work with him to get Verizon support in his main thread. Would be best solution since he does have sprint support. I am making no promises I can get this done! But I will try
I have a Verizon HTC One and would love to be able to use this ROM! There isnt very many roms for the Verizon version being as it came out so late im guessing.

Have you tried any that we do have? We've got pretty solid options for both Sense and AOSP ROMs.

Not gonna lie, it doesn't look that impressive. It's basically a stock based ROM with sense 5 toolbox. Kinda meh in my opinion

Any updates on trying to get a port for Android Revolution to Verizon? That would be great!

I actually did this, just to see what all the hoopla was about.
It's essentially a stock rom with Sense 5 toolbox, not much point in it really. (my 2 cents)
What feature is it you are looking for that's not currently available to us on Vzw? Just curious.
Is it the GPU rendering? Because that's the only thing that really stands out... to me anyway.

Hehe...I did too. I also didn't care for it. Bonestock is way better for a stock experience.

Okay, good to know we'r not missing out on too much. Unfortunately, its not like we can test out that ROM for ourselves since its on the GSM version so its hard to really compare it to the roms that are offered for Verizon.
