[Q] Stupid question about wimax and cm7 - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I finally got cm7, and it just so happens that I finally live in an area with 4g coverage. The built in wifi tether works, and wimax appears to work. What I do is turn on wimax, then the tether. How do I know if it is tethering 4g speeds? I haven't really noticed any difference.
*I have never used 4g before, because I haven't lived in an area that covered it.

If I recall correctly you can't tether 4g with the built-in function on CM7.

I know i've used wifi tethering on 4g... really it depends on your signal strength. i haven't really tethered before with 3g so i can't compare it, but i know that it does work...

well i've done wireless tethering on 4g but the speed between both doesn't seem that much of a difference. does this wireless tethering work the same way as the hotspot?

Sprint hotspot...no 4G?

So I did Calk's tweak to get Sprint hot spot working. Tried it today but it seems to kill 4G? Does it not work with 4G?
Via EVO on XDA app...
Greetings,
I'm not sure it's related. But I just installed the XDA app, and found every time
I attempted to login, the 4G link would drop, and XDA threw the error;
service unavailable.
I simply blamed it on being a bad night for 4G in my area. But thought I'd respond
here just in case. I'll know better by tomorrow.

OK I just tried again and as you can see, XDA app works on my sprint 4G.

Not quite the same...I have no problems with 4G. It's just when I use the SPRINT WiFi router...the one in the market works fine on 4G. I also talked to a co-worker who said her (paid) sprint router works just fine with 4G, so its clearly an issue with my phone or ROM.
Via EVO on XDA app...
I noticed this too, when trying to use Sprint's Hotspot w/Calkulin's fix, the 4g icon drops and I only have 3g.
Can someone confirm that if they are paying for the Hotspot that it connects with 4g?
Same thing here, can't use native tethering with 4g. So I just switched to Easy Tether and Wireless Tether, they work fine with 4g.
I'm sure the native tethering would work over 4g if you were paying for it, I mean, they advertise it in the commercials, so I'd sure hope it works.
Hey... this thing makes phone calls too!
I tried the Sprint Hotspot app through Myns RLS2 to tether last night on 4g and it dropped down to 3g every time. Turned it off and right back to 4g. Maybe sometime soon that might work.

Don't count on it...I found in another thread that it registers the WiMax MAC when it connects and supposedly there's no way around this.
I just ended up buying an Overdrive...WiFi tether for Root users is toooooo slow as well.

help if possible please...ty 4G issue.Tethering

i have 7MB speeds off of 4G, but when i tether with wireless tether app, or the stock app thats been unlocked, or pda net or anything else i have tryed, i get under 1mb download speeds...i have all the newest updated radios that came with 3.70...hope sumone has a solution or idea...have tryed the changes several ppl on here have posted but nothing changes...
no tether = 7MB down

You can on CM, at least it looks like it when I'm on 4g and turn on hotspot, unless it's actually using 3g and doesn't show it in the status bar.

Tethering works nicely wired or wireless.
Wireless tether works well for 4g, as does wired tether. Both should be available in the market place.
For 3g tethering wireless, I use the stock hotspot app. For 3g wired, the last option in the charge menu works well - on roms where this has been enabled.
Not sure what the posts above are referring to stating that 4g tethering does not work....

well i have been using various roms but mostly myns5 and just flashed koni elite tontite...no 4G speeds coming across tether, wired or wireless...any clues or suggestions ?
I'm not familiar with either of those. I've only played with 2 roms thus far, fresh and evio (see sig). Tethering on fresh required removing some files from the lib folder, but evio supported 3g/4g without doing anything else.
Make a backup and give it a try. I do know that unless you're paying for the hotspot feature, the sprint hotspot app will not support 4g tethering.
Btw, if replying to a directly post above, what is the point of quoting?
well i will have to try one of them then...my 3G speeds on tether are faster than when hooked up to 4G...habit on the quote...thanks for your help
My best results have been wired 4g. I'm not sure if it's the crappy wireless NIC on the pc or just the combination of multiple radios going on the evo. Best wireless speeds I see are 3-5 MB/s. Wired i've seen speeds upward of 9-12 MB/s (megabytes).
3G is usually crappy, 500-700 kbps down, under 300-400 kbps up
I am running ava and use the wireless tether. I can get 8mb down using speedtest.net on my phone but only 1.5 tethered on my lap top. There is a dramatic drop but if I didn't have 4g on that number drops dramatically. Without 4g I couldn't stream anything so I know it works but it does lose a lot of speed.

I agree I get similar speeds on both wireless and wired as this poster. I try to stick with wired for many reasons but mostly because if I am going to be tethered pulling 10Mbps+ (common for me at my work) then I would burn through my battery before the day was out anyway so why not plug it in.. get good speeds AND get juice!
ive noticed similar things 1-1.5 or so except that with wired pdanet seems im around 2.5-4 the one time i used it. I get 6-8 with the speedtest app on my phone. I wonder if the same would occur with the paid tether. perhaps they have some sort of throttling going on.
I was just out in woodland hills, ca and getting consistant 13 on 4g but with wifi tether sharing to a iphone it was only getting like .6 .7 megabits using the wifi tether app and the built in sprint app only works for 3g it shuts 4g off this is on mikfroyo rom.

Help with wifi tether speeds!!!

Anyone know how to increase the wireless tether speed I have tired the built in tether and after messing with several rom's I am getting horrible speeds.
Tried to install wifi tether and could not get that to work either.
I am currently running decks rim.
Used to get speeds of up to 2mb on the built in Tether and close to 4 using wifi tether. now best I get is .8

Welcome to Sprint's "blazing fast" 3g network.
Pretty much what he said you can try to do a speed test and see what you get but pretty much you can look for better service for better speeds

You can also try setting up a proxy.
Yes, Sprints 3G & 4G speeds have been circling the drain for almost a year now. Tower to device speeds are bad; tower through device to laptop speeds are terrible.
If you have Easytether you're in luck. Back it up in triplicate. Don't allow automatic updates. Any updates will either remove it or render it unusable. ET is no longer available for Sprint 4G devices. If you can find a copy, simply side load it.
For Wireless Tether, setting up a proxy is definitely the way to go. Filter Proxy, available free in Market, will do the trick. There is a quick set-up guide somewhere here at XDA. While not as fast as EasyTether, the Wireless Tether with Filter Proxy isn't too bad.
I had this problem their are three things I did to fix it they are all easy 1. Call sprint and tell them you are haveing trouble makeing and receiving calls, bad data speeds blah blah blah (their will be an option somewhere in their voicemail that basically says that.) They will reset your data which will make everything faster. They will make you update your phones radios and etc. Cancel those and do it yourself (I just reflashed a rom I knew had them all included) 2. If you haven't already v6 supercharge and 3g optimize (they are both posted on xda) 3. Overlock the heck out of it whenever you run tether.
Ps. I don't think v6 will make it faster but it will make your phone faster so it might help a lil. Also I have never tried this but I know you can make your phone default to verizon 4g lte this might help verizon has better service where you live

Haha you have no idea what you are talking about. Again, Verizon's 4g is LTE based, Sprint's is Wimax. Two COMPLETELY different networks. The Evo does NOT have an LTE radio, therefore you will NEVER be able to connect to verizon's 4g. Yes, the Thunderbolt and Evo are similar, except for the fact that the Thunderbolt has a 4g LTE radio and not a Wimax radio.
And no, Verizon's 4g is not "basically 3g". My friends with Verizon phones can pull 15mbps down all day long.

Umm, look at the FCC specs for the Evo. It does NOT have an LTE radio!!! Look at the specs for a Thunderbolt, it DOES have an LTE radio!
Here's another way to check, force your phone to roam and then turn on 4g, it wont work!
Stop bableing like a lunatic, I asked my boy he said you don't meet a lte radio to connect because ITS BASICALLY 3G! he said the lte don't do nothing and Evo deffinatly could pick it up with some tricky prl work, he said he knows you don't think that would be 4glte but he said that at least in philly u get about the same speed because 4glte is a load of crap... Again, NO!!!! LTE and Wimax are two different techniques, with two completely different frequency sets. A software hack will NEVER allow the evo to connect to lte. And again, if you are SOOOO SURE of yourself, why not connect to Verizon LTE with your evo and then take a picture of it.

Ummm, no, 4g LTE is NOT crap. My work phone with Verizon can pull 20mbps down all day long, that is NOT crap, that is faster than 60% of American's home internet.
Face it man, you have no clue what you are talking about. 4g LTE is NOT "basically 3g". If 4g was basically 3g, then they wouldn't call it 4g and make all this hype about it. Do yourself a favor, and actually READ those links I gave you. That is, if you are actually capable of reading...
Or maybe just make a new post asking if the evo can connect to LTE, I'm sure you will love getting flamed by the rest of the people here.

Sprint 4G coverage question...

Is there a way to find out if 4G coverage has been removed from an area? I came in to work today and no 4G connection....I barely get 3G as it is in this particular area, so I called sprint and they said that there was in fact an issue with the zip I provided, but the problem had been resolved.
We went through the usual update this and that, and still no signal. She concluded saying there was a possibility that 4G coverage may have been removed from that area. I would just like to know if there's a way of digging deeper in order to get a solid answer to whether it's been removed or not.
The best thing I could think of is sprint.com/coverage,I believe they also have a clearwire wimax app in the marketplace search clearwire

The thing is if they've really removed 4g from the only place I did get 4g, that would suck considering that 3g is slower than tmobile's edge. Hopefully it's temporary...
What modem are you using? I recently updated to EL26 from E13. I only get 3g in my house and spotty service so when I updated my modem my dl/ul speed increased.
