i have 7MB speeds off of 4G, but when i tether with wireless tether app, or the stock app thats been unlocked, or pda net or anything else i have tryed, i get under 1mb download speeds...i have all the newest updated radios that came with 3.70...hope sumone has a solution or idea...have tryed the changes several ppl on here have posted but nothing changes...
no tether = 7MB down
tether = < 1MB down

You can on CM, at least it looks like it when I'm on 4g and turn on hotspot, unless it's actually using 3g and doesn't show it in the status bar.
swyped from my gingerbread'd Evo 4G
Tethering works nicely wired or wireless.
Wireless tether works well for 4g, as does wired tether. Both should be available in the market place.
For 3g tethering wireless, I use the stock hotspot app. For 3g wired, the last option in the charge menu works well - on roms where this has been enabled.
Not sure what the posts above are referring to stating that 4g tethering does not work....

well i have been using various roms but mostly myns5 and just flashed koni elite tontite...no 4G speeds coming across tether, wired or wireless...any clues or suggestions ?
I'm not familiar with either of those. I've only played with 2 roms thus far, fresh and evio (see sig). Tethering on fresh required removing some files from the lib folder, but evio supported 3g/4g without doing anything else.
Make a backup and give it a try. I do know that unless you're paying for the hotspot feature, the sprint hotspot app will not support 4g tethering.
Btw, if replying to a directly post above, what is the point of quoting?
well i will have to try one of them then...my 3G speeds on tether are faster than when hooked up to 4G...habit on the quote...thanks for your help
My best results have been wired 4g. I'm not sure if it's the crappy wireless NIC on the pc or just the combination of multiple radios going on the evo. Best wireless speeds I see are 3-5 MB/s. Wired i've seen speeds upward of 9-12 MB/s (megabytes).
3G is usually crappy, 500-700 kbps down, under 300-400 kbps up
I am running ava and use the wireless tether. I can get 8mb down using speedtest.net on my phone but only 1.5 tethered on my lap top. There is a dramatic drop but if I didn't have 4g on that number drops dramatically. Without 4g I couldn't stream anything so I know it works but it does lose a lot of speed.

I agree I get similar speeds on both wireless and wired as this poster. I try to stick with wired for many reasons but mostly because if I am going to be tethered pulling 10Mbps+ (common for me at my work) then I would burn through my battery before the day was out anyway so why not plug it in.. get good speeds AND get juice!
ive noticed similar things 1-1.5 or so except that with wired pdanet seems im around 2.5-4 the one time i used it. I get 6-8 with the speedtest app on my phone. I wonder if the same would occur with the paid tether. perhaps they have some sort of throttling going on.
I was just out in woodland hills, ca and getting consistant 13 on 4g but with wifi tether sharing to a iphone it was only getting like .6 .7 megabits using the wifi tether app and the built in sprint app only works for 3g it shuts 4g off this is on mikfroyo rom.

Hello,
I tried seraching for this issue and could not find any help in the topics
My phone via 4g get's about 3-5mbps when I run speedtest on the evo...
I start wireless tether and the fastest speed I can get via my laptop is .5-.7mbps.
I updated my wireless driver to allow maxium power and that has allowed the speed to stay consitant between the .5-.7mbps.
Any ideas/help on how I can get my wireless tether speed to match closer to the 4g speed the phone gets? I understand there would be some loss in speed using the Evo as a hotspot but is a full 2-4mbps loss in speed normal?
Any tips or help is greatly appreciated
Mine does the same thing. Not sure why but I suspect it is something to do with the app.
If u using the free one it cap to 400kb if its sprint version it only works better on windows 7 so far my xp not getting those full speeds
EVIL PHONE
Yah, it really depends on what wifi tether your using. I use the updated google one, and watch hulu in dtown DC (4G) Conn ave. & K St. area; and get 3-4 mbps on the regular using the tether. I don't think the bluetooth connection would be quicker, but would definately conserve battery. SO which TETHER are you using?
I'm using the latest and greatest from google (pre3).
On my phone I easily get ~3-5mbps but in tether it drops drastically.
Just curious what ROM are you using?
definately capped
I just noticed this after flashing a rooted 2.2 rom. When I was using the google tether app on 2.1 Eclair Roms, I was easily getting 299 - 699 Kb/s download speeds using a bit torrent to download music, videos and what not; on the 3G networks, and 1.5 Mb/s - 3Mb/s on the 4G. Now with froyo, my tethering is capped at at about 50 Kb/s on 3G and about 200 Kb/s on 4G. I think it's definately something caused by Froyo, because apparently carriers can choose whether or not to allow tethering for free in this rom, which makes me believe that they can choose whether or not to cap the speed on connection sharing. Now when I download something directly from the phone, the speeds on the 3G and 4G are around the speeds I was getting with 2.1 . I'm going to try wiping and flashing back to a 2.1 rom; keeping my fingers crossed and seeing if this is in fact the case.
I also get slower 3G type speeds while wifitethering using pre7 or 8. On the phone I can get 4Mbps, but on the ipad/computer I get 700Kbps, and I cant really seem to figure out why.
Running DC3.5 with latest radios. Anyone else have any luck with this?
Did you try unlocking the N wifi on the phone? That might help cuz the phone come stock with G

Well technically G should be able to handle 11Mbps although in real life it should get at least 3 or 4. My friend was tethering around 2Mbps on eclair, but he seems limited as well. I am tempted to buy a month of Sprint to see what kind of tethered speeds I will get via sprint hotspot (but I doubt it hehe)

Use CM6 RC2 before you drop 30 bucks for something you dont need. CM6 can be a hotspot without paying 30 bucks but on the flipside CM6 cant use 4G
Dont get me wrong, I can tether. My speeds tethered are faster when I am on 3G as opposed to 4G though.
using the "wireless tether" app from the market on eclair I was getting about 2-5 mBps download and 600-800 mbps upload.
Now, on 2.2 I'm getting 3kB download and 9kB upload. I'd like to figure out how to get back the higher speeds I had with eclair.
Possible the google tether app...???
I figure I'll throw my name in here too. Wireless tether worked great when I was on 2.1, I was getting like 6mbps speeds over 4G when tethered to my laptop. I updated to 2.2 (with a full wipe of everything, then install SteelH's 2.2 De-odexed REV E.1 ROM) and installed Wireless Tether pre8, it works but I only get like .2mbps download speeds, regardless of 3G or 4G.
I tried Wireless Tether pre7 and pre8, neither seem to do the trick. Anyone figured this out yet? Alternatively, can anyone using a similar ROM confirm it is working at full speed for them?
Okay, I seemed to find the problem fix for me. I needed to clear the Dalvik Cache. Now I'm getting regular speeds over 4G.
I thought I was clearing the Dalvik Cache, but I was just clearing the... uhh... "regular" cache. Dalvik is under the advanced menu in Clockwork Recovery...
Delvik cache?
So, I used unrevoked3.2 that includes clockwork. To access I turn on phone while holding volume down? Then what? I'd like streaming speed over tether as well.
Running CM6 on my Evo and noticed that I only get 1.7mbs down from the built in WiFi Hotspot feature, and 2.5mbs down from the Wireless Tether for Root Users app from the marketplace. Anyone have similar findings, or know why this might be?
Those are some pretty decent speeds for 3G.

That's what I was thinking LOL
The only reasonable explanation would be that Sprint is managing throughput of the WiFi hotspot, or that it was designed to be intentionally slower. There is NO Reason why it should be faster or slower than the Root WiFi tether app. They're connecting to the same network, the only difference being the apps themselves.. I wouldn't pay Sprint $30 extra for that app anyway. It's a waste with Root WiFi tether.

CM6's mobile tether is built into the AOSP, Sprint removes this and add's their own app, which is why Wireless Tether for root is necessary on Sense ROMs.
I have no idea why this would occur, maybe the Wifi Tether has a higher process priority than the built in?
So I did Calk's tweak to get Sprint hot spot working. Tried it today but it seems to kill 4G? Does it not work with 4G?
Via EVO on XDA app...
Greetings,
I'm not sure it's related. But I just installed the XDA app, and found every time
I attempted to login, the 4G link would drop, and XDA threw the error;
service unavailable.
I simply blamed it on being a bad night for 4G in my area. But thought I'd respond
here just in case. I'll know better by tomorrow.

OK I just tried again and as you can see, XDA app works on my sprint 4G.

Not quite the same...I have no problems with 4G. It's just when I use the SPRINT WiFi router...the one in the market works fine on 4G. I also talked to a co-worker who said her (paid) sprint router works just fine with 4G, so its clearly an issue with my phone or ROM.
Via EVO on XDA app...
I noticed this too, when trying to use Sprint's Hotspot w/Calkulin's fix, the 4g icon drops and I only have 3g.
Can someone confirm that if they are paying for the Hotspot that it connects with 4g?
Same thing here, can't use native tethering with 4g. So I just switched to Easy Tether and Wireless Tether, they work fine with 4g.
I'm sure the native tethering would work over 4g if you were paying for it, I mean, they advertise it in the commercials, so I'd sure hope it works.
Hey... this thing makes phone calls too!
I tried the Sprint Hotspot app through Myns RLS2 to tether last night on 4g and it dropped down to 3g every time. Turned it off and right back to 4g. Maybe sometime soon that might work.

Don't count on it...I found in another thread that it registers the WiMax MAC when it connects and supposedly there's no way around this.
I just ended up buying an Overdrive...WiFi tether for Root users is toooooo slow as well.
Just installed wireless tether and easy tether. Obviously wireless tether is nice as their is no need to plug your phone in, but I ran speed test on my lap top using both and with 4g on I got 7.23Mb/s with easy tether and only 2.49 with wireless. Just curious if other people seeing similar speeds and if there is a way to increase speed with the wireless.
Same here Fredrik, I got an 80% drop in speed using Wifi Tether. Easy tether only gave me only a 30% drop. Speedtest on my EVO was getting a constant 10Mb/s.
ok, figured out it is not my laptop wireless card because I just re ran a test on my on my lap top using wifi and got 19, so something must ave been using all of our bandwidth last night when I tested it.

I am using pre 13, when I tried 14 my computer would connect but with no internet access.
also has anyone tried the sprint hot spot app and if so what speeds have they gotten using it?
I could not get internet access on pre14 either. I had to revert to a previous edition.

I had the sprint hotspot feature for a month. It was awhile ago so I don't remember the exact numbers, but it was very fast especially with 4g, much faster than the wireless tether app.

OK then we know it's not hardware, it must be something with the wireless tether app. Hopefully they can improve on it.
I have a similar problem posted a few days ago about it. There is an issue open with the dev team about it. Issue 510 I believe.

Is the speed better with RC1? I was seeing the same slowdown with earlier versions, but haven't had a chance to test RC1.
There hasn't been this topic started from what I understand so I wanted to ask here. I am running the early builds of GB (CM7 builds from thatguy) and have been messing around with tethering. With the couple times I have used tethering I have been getting DL speeds on speedtest.net anywhere from 3.8 to 5.4 in the Cincinnati area.
So what tethering speeds are you all seeing.
Are you doing it via usb or wifi?

Wireless tether.
i watched the best hulu show of Its Always Sunny in Philadelphiia-- a few hours ago and I totally forgot I was tethering off my phone. It was a smooth show.. and hysterical. white trash mac and charlie!
dont really get into speed tests with tethering -- iff it works.. it works..
I use to wireless tether with my magic running CM....worked just as good as my home internet, never knew the difference
