[Q] (Q)(Salutations)(Poll) Possible Solutions (Workarounds) to Broken Power Button - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Long time lurker, first time poster. Hello World! I have had my evo 4g since the end of june of 2010. It is my first smart phone and my baby. I rooted it twenty minutes after I bought it from stuff I read on xda sitting at the mall waiting on my wife to buy some shoes. I got some sort of perverted satisfaction of rooting the phone from within sight of the sprint-hut where it was purchased. I have been a recovering flashaholic ever since.
I have never posted anything because I am absurdly busy with work and I usually find that I never have a question that isn't asked and answered long before I am able to catch up on a thread. Thank you to all of the developers who have helped to push the envelope of interface design and break the mold of corporate copyrightedness to create an open society of free bootin' jail rootin' yah hoos. And thank you to all the rest of the xda community, the hosts, the users, the knuckleheads, the mentors and teachers and helpers and trolls, and whoever else. You all are nothing if not entertaining. Sorry for the preamble.
My poor little evo has taken a beating over the last fourteen months. I don't think this is the end, but it may be the beginning of the end. I am really surprised that it hasn't happened sooner.
My power button is shot. It has not functioned in any capacity for 24 hours. It does not work within sense, or in fastboot or recovery or the bootloader or anything. Pushing the button has no response. If the phone is off and I want to turn it on I have to pull the battery and replace it. Here is my question: If I take it in to a sprint store what will happen:
A. they will fix the button and the phone will be good as new
B. they they will gladly replace the phone if the power button is broken
C. they will say you are **** out of luck even with your insurance because you are rooted
D. I use the s-off tool and install a stock RUU and unroot an otherwise perfectly good if slightly battered og evo 4g with the .76 eng bootloader and kill a little bit of myself in the process.
The question is academic really. I have no intention of turning my phone into them to get "fixed" only to have them tell me that my baby has been destroyed and I am forced to get an unrootable refurb.
Here is what I have done so far for workarounds. As our phones age and our hopes of getting root on updated refurbs diminish threads like this one will become very important. "How to care for an aging Evo".
Installed No Lock to disable the lock screen and to be able to use the volume rocker to bring the phone out of sleep
Installed Screen Off and Lock to allow me to put the phone into sleep from the notification bar
I also had to install adw launcher. Lately I have been using mikg with sense widgets and the sense launcher. Unfortunately, at the time of the power button ceasing to function, I had been experimenting trying to get elements from a couple of different themes to work together and I broke my rosie. I cannot edit the widgets on my homescreen without getting a force close.
So I guess one final question: Is there a way to do recovery without a functioning power button? I guess if I am stuck forever with MikG 2.42 my evo will definitely always have some style.
I apologize for my utter lack of brevity.
peace garfilo

I had a power button issue and I was rooted.
The problem was that the button worked except you needed to really push it in to wake up the phone.
Took it to the sprint store(I have TEP) and the rep took it to the back to see if it could be repaired.
10minutes later he told me It could not be fixed and that the other rep was getting my new evo ready.
No charges or anything BUT you will get a phone with 2.3 and I noticed when the rep activated my phone he gave it to me so I could leave while the phone booted up.
Everything went well setup wizard, etc, etc and then it downloaded updates automatically.(none available since It was on 2.3 out of the box)

Is there any way to use recovery to nandroid/wipe/flash etc without a functioning power button?

For Bell I9000M users - Samsung Canada Facebook Page To Comment On 3 Button Issue

I encourage anyone concerned about the availability of the 3 button download mode, or other issues, to comment on the Samsung Facebook page. I already posted a comment and got a response I find somewhat disturbing... maybe there is strength in numbers.
http://www.facebook.com/samsungmobi...omment#!/samsungmobilecanada?v=wall&ref=notif
Make sure he doesn't duck the question. 3 button means that experienced end users can actually fix a bad flash (lol @ Kies) without having to lose their phone for a month (Allgamer is at the 3 week mark now after sending his phone in).
Hopefully they will provide an answer. I have since returned mine back to Future Shop. I've tried 4 other phones hoping to be able to do an exchange, but all of them had 3 button recovery disabled. If they release a fix for this I will buy the phone in an instant.
I saw your post over there...
Exactly what I figured their response would be... I for one am not holding my breath for an update through Samsung to enable 3 button recovery.
They messed though by inexplicably letting some through with it enabled...Makes it hard to justify why some have it and some don't... If anything, expect an update to disable it on the ones that have it enabled!
I hope otherwise, but in all seriousness, the majority of users will likely never have to use recovery and the average user out there is not an xda-developpers member. Yes, Samsung will have to deal with bricks but probably in their mind, they are making it slightly harder to do 'unauthorized' stuff.

Meh, I am not going that far. Recovery mode is a nice to have but it is not going to deprive me of the best phone on the market by miles (there is not a phone that is going to be better than the 3GS for at least 6 months or more, nothing is in the pipeline that comes close)

Until you accidentally brick it, then you are paying $60 a month while it goes off to get fixed. Yes, it's awesome hardware, but without 3 button, it's not worth it to me. I'm also stubborn enough to demand a resolution to this issue before forking out the money a 2nd time
I've left a comment of the Facebook page. Let's hope someone hears something. Going back to using my iPhone has killed me.
wow samsung come on your slacking
Samsung Mobile Canada Hi Jason. 3 button download mode is for internal firmware functions and is not recommended to end-users. It’s typically used by technicians to service malfunctioning phones. Modifying the internal firmware on a mobile phone device may void the warranty. What function you are trying to do? Maybe we can help find another way. Feel free to reach out to us at 1-800-SAMSUNG and we'll see how we can help. Thank
sounds like they could fix it but might not if your dumb enough to flash your bell sgs and have the 3 button combo disabled best of luck to you
haha sumsung cant ignore facebook
ive taken back 6 phones 600x6 is 3600 worth of phones lol and they all didnt have recovery so i took them back best buys 100% satisfaction guarantee gotta love it

If I am unlucky enough to brick it (which, despite my rants, is pretty hard to actually do in practice.... as long as you are flashing with a stable laptop it is not going to brick), then I'll get it replaced under warranty. The odds of me flashing it again after Froyo is out are near zero.
See, unlike WinMo, you don't have to re-flash Android to customize it, nearly everything on the phone can be customized in-line. All the stuff Cyogen etc. are doing can be done without flashing the phone, so you don't have to worry about bricking it
I learned from my years with my HTC dev. that re-flashing every few weeks is a huge pain in the butt, and I don't plan on doing that again with this phone.

Be careful, if you post too many things on the wall, they will just get frustrated and get Facebook to remove all the posts. You can do that with paid Facebook pages like this.

When did you know...

...that you became hopelessly addicted to your smartphone? I realized mine when my Evo got stolen and I realized that not only was my very expensive and awesome phone gone, but now if I wanted to see any new emails, I had to open up my laptop and go to google periodically to check instead of having the Governator shout at me to "get in da choppa" every time a new email arrived.
but I'm not addicted I can stop any time.......
Yea, I can put my Evo down any time I want....and I could easily stop checking xda 100 times a day. No addiction here bro...

Not addicted, here cuz I want to be.
But not addicted.
for me it was the first 4am night modding my htc hero a year ago. little did i know on that first night, how many more similar nights would follow.
im not addicted, i just cant put my evo down...or stop refreshing xda pages...nm, im hooked.
edit: also, most of my bookmarks on my pc are xda pages. another sign
Yep, I had the all nighter session too! And the next day and the next.... I really knew it when I bricked my phone at work, stayed up late to fix it but couldn't, then had to be without the whole next day till I could sit down again and sort it out... So I flashed a new ROM!!! And it hasn't stopped, on my 5th Rom now in about 10 days....
I was actually late for work one day because I found a rom I really wanted to try and no freaking way was I gonna stop in the middle of a setup and no freaking way was I gonna go to work without my phone working right. I run the shipping dept at work and spend half the night all alone on my forklift on the other side of the plant than everyone else other than three guys work for me. We all been there awhile so other than tell them quick schedule for night they know what to do. I'd need rehab without my evo, power amp and bose earbuds. LOL I bet I check this place 3 times a night at least!
I would say I'm addicted I love trying out different builds for my evo. I just got it last Friday been loving it every since. Started off with a white hw 003 but didn't like the white anymore plus had this light leakage right below the captive buttons and the power button was sinking in so returned it for a black 004. day before yesterday but now my power button starting to sink in...is this normal, I don't even press on the power button hard fml

My daughter has gone through 2 Evos (2 broken screens) and those 2 had the sinking power button prob....
I knew I as a addict
1. when my friends told me I spend to much time with the phone
2. When I first got the phone back in November and flashed every available rom for the Evo..I mean every one!!! This over a course of 2 or 3 months.
3. When I copy my nandroid backups to my computer. All 12 gigs of it...on my laptop.
4. When I first put on anon recovery and could flash new rooms without adb. It felt like I was having a secret affair..
5. When I used to read xda over my ebooks..
6. When my girl told me to put the darn phone down and eat dinner with her.
7. When I would go in titanium backup and delete every damn bloatware I did not need or think I would give a 0.000000000001 percent better battery life...
Now I am a recovering flashaholic...satiesfied with cm7(because of wimax support) the modified wireless tether..list goes on...
I, too, have flashed about every ROM there is, and I've only had my EVO for 3 months.
I thought I had it beat when, just for the hell of it, I ran the RUU, and started all over again from scratch.
I thought I had it beat last month when I put Koni III on. I thought i was finally satisfied with a ROM I could live with every day. Then King had to go and release his 4th Sense ROM. And THEN, VaelPak had to come out with RC2. Now Koni's working on Elite 4, and since I'm a donor, I can't sleep at night, waiting for the beta to be released......
I got it bad, man. I got it REAL bad....
Hipkat,
You are not alone...I know the feeling...let me put some other items I knew when I was addicted....I forget theses when I wrote first article..
A. When somebody sees my phone and says it that a droid...not android but the darn locked Droid from moto.. I say hell NO...
B. When another user is on a puny smaller screen..different phone..hero..incredible...and such...then pull out my evo and pretend to read my text and see their eyes get wide...real wide...
C. When somebody at work use a tablet with 3G built in...then I simply pull out my nook color or iPad and tether it to my baby..
D. When a iPhone user brags about their phone...then I pull up my evo..hold their phone close to my hand side to side and say...nice screen on your phone...you must have great eyesight and small fingers.....
E. Last but not least...have every copy of a rom..from different version up grade...and worst of all...look at my nandroid backups and just the time stamp and try to remember what backup was that?....hehe...
When I first jailbroke my iphone 3 years ago. It introduced me to modding on a whole new level.

This is kind of a disspointment. I'm on my second evo also and my new one is almost leveled flat. I'm still within my 30 days so I might end up returning this one for another one. And with the new one see if I can remap the power button to the volume down or up button instead.

Remapping the buttons?????? Now that's good thinking..... oh btw I just checked my wifes Evo and her power button is sinking a bit.
The real addiction is not being able to stop trying to tweak it.
After reading all this I am starting to itch. Be right back after another flash.

[Q] After Power Button Pressed.....Stuck on Splash Screen made by SoCalDevs.Com

its rooted. s-off supersonic....i cant tell ya all the specifics of the phone but i wanted to change to 4g start up screen with the blocks and the start up sound. I think it was called a splash screen? Anyways. The phone doesn't hold a battery charge as it is. it went dead in my pocket and when i charged it back up and tried to start it up it just sticks on the splash screen i think its called? its a pic of my daughter and i. then usually it would then go to htc 4g evo quietly brilliant screen. it does not. the only thing it will do at this point is go to the screen of my pic i put in of me and my daughter. it does a lil vibrate for a sec as well. where do i go from here? lol lol im already invested in this phone for about two weeks of time. i get through everyother prob thanks to you guys but im stumped on this one.... please help...plus my screen is cracked. anyway to get a new screen cheaper than trying to use insurance to get a new one? thank you.....DuBBzILLa
Try to power off the phone. Then hold volume down + power buttons at the same time until the bootloader appears. Use the volume down button until RECOVERY IS HIGHLIGHTED, followed by the power button. You should see an option on the list to wipe. If you can, try to find and wipe only the Cache and then Dalvik cache. The reboot the phone.
got into clockworkmod
thanks a ton.....NOW...hehe. Can ya help me out with gettin my wifi back on and let me know two other things? can you get the alpha.apk or blackmarketalpha app american link. i downloaded it so i can grab apps for free but its in islamic writing. i can see some american writing but the site usaually crashes. and the other thing was how can i get the free hot spot wifi tethering? can some one line me up with what a rom is and which one is best for this htc evo 4g. i think i have a clue but im trying to get something where you can store up to 5 different roms on the sd card? also. i would like to get some links to some cool kernels. i have no idea what a kernel is either but some of these guru are blowing my phone out the water and i have the same phone. if poss. list the direct sites to guides and lead me to the up to date software outthere. is there anything i should be staying away from and i have cracked screen as well. is that easily replaceable because dubbzilla.weber is broke and has no insurance on this rooted device thanks short doggs. that was way cool of you because i almost chucked it into the mississippi. whew. amen to you guru's. what are you using and can ya teach me the way?

My friend it sounds like you need to take a ride over to development section ahd just read. There are tons of options for your Evo and the best bet would be to do some research on everything Sense, AOSP and MIUI roms. All have there pros and cons. Now for wifi tethering you can get that in the market. For up to date software just google latest software for your Evo. Not trying to discourage you but I think the more you learn on your own the better you feel at the end.
Cracked screen once again not sure where you live but check craigslist for people who fix them or once again check google. Take your time man and just read up on things it will be well worth it in the end to understand why you are doing what you are doing and not because a thread said you could....
Goog luck

Evo 4g lte

I live in west Michigan and am waiting for the LTE system to be up and runningg to get my new phone after getting burned on the WiMax deal. I have become a huge fan of rooting since i did it on my evo earlier this year. I started thinking earlier today...
i wonder how long it will be before we can root the new evo 4g lte... I am not waiting to root this one, it will be done as soon as I can. I waited over a year to do my OG evo and i love the customization.

From what I've heard, it may be a long time. Read the other threads regarding the EVO LTE. Someone posted some bad news in all of them earlier today. Seems that HTC screwed us.

The new bootloaders are unlockable through HTC dev. So we will be able to unlock, but they are limited as they cannot mount usb in recovery.

They will find a way to s-off after 3-4 months. They found a crazy way to get s-off on the htc rezound using a wire and touching two pins on the back of the phone when the rooting software says to. I would like to know who figured that out. Amazing

I believe that NOTHING is impossible... no matter how hard phone manufacturers try to "screw" us and keep us from rooting, some dev will find a way to root/hack it. Im not eligible for my upgrade til October so that'll give them time to work it out.
One of the biggest factors for me is the non-removable battery.... I feel like that is my failsafe whenever the phone isnt responding. There better be a hot restart like holding the home and power putton like on the iPhone

There is. Plus there's a button combo to shut off the phone entirely, allowing you to theoretically either turn back on, or boot into recovery if something is really wrong. I think I heard you have to hold down the power button for like ten seconds straight or something like that. No worries, HTC wasn't THAT stupid.
But yes, I am of the belief that we will have our s-off eventually, and honestly, I don't need it for a while. I'm going to enjoy my new product stock, and I don't think I'll miss my flashing at all - that's how awesome this phone appears to perform. Now, down the road (6 to 12 months) when things are getting old and I want some tweaks, sure. But I bet by then, given the massive amount of popularity this phone will garner, I feel safe assuming someone will find a way around the issues.
As a side note, WOW to that story about the Rezound! That's incredible! Who decided once to just stick pins in their phone and see if that works??

[Q] !!! Power Trouble !!!

I have a major problem with the Power for my Epic. It is not rooted or anything fancy. The charging port is broken (yes, its all kaboom). I can only charge the phone by taking out the battery, charge the battery with a charger (available at Radio Shack for only $40!) and put it back in. The problem is...the phone won't turn on! I had to declare war yesterday until I finally forced Google to provide an answer which was to remove the battery, hold the Power button for 15 seconds, put the battery back in and turn it on. Hallelujah! It worked! Then later into half of the day, the battery was low, so I properly turned off the phone in order to remove the battery to charge it. And now the phone will not, I repeat, will not power back on under my command!!! I have tried and tried everything, alternating different ways and amount of seconds of waiting and holding the Power button....nothing! What can I do? I came across mentions of the Hard Reset button under the battery cover. I can't find it. Where is it? Also, is there any other way to make this work? I have to fight this every time I am done charging the battery. No, I repeat, it is not the battery since it works in another phone. It is the phone. Please help me! This is pushing me on the verge of *sighs* fatal suicide! Ahhhh Ahhhhhhhh AHHHHHHHHHH!!!!

How old is the phone & do you have TEP?
Sounds like you need to take it to the Sprint store for replacement.
If you have TEP & it is over 1 yr old then it will cost $100.00 to replace it.
As far as the reset button......that's a myth.....some people have claimed to have it, but money has been offered for a picture of the magic button & no one has produced even one picture of the magic reset button (that I am aware of)......most of the Dev's on here will tell you the button is only a myth.......
It might be a year or a little less. I don't have TEP. The phone is all I have and I would rather not replace it, cuz Samsung doesn't know how to increase the 512mb to 1gb of RAM, so a lot of apps are making the phone freeze cuz RAM is always maxed out. I'm thinking about getting the blue S3, but really want to use the phone until then. I dunno why it won't power back on. I managed to get it to work once then it just cries cuz I take battery out.
I would suggest some options that require rooting & flashing a custom ROM to make the phone work as it should. But with a damaged USB connector on the phone (as I understood you to say you had) you cannot flash anything. There is no way of increasing the RAM in the phone, but the internal storage can be increased to alomst 700MB by converting to MTD. I have been running CleanGB MTD (slightly overclocked) for a long while now & this phone continues to amaze me. It handles everything I throw at it without any problems. It multi tasks great. Stock it may not be as good, but our Dev's here do a great job & have turned this phone into a great device. The RAM issue has not been a problem for me yet & I push this thing to do way more than it is supposed to do.
If it is less than a year old then the replacement should be $35.00 think. It's a handling fee Sprint charges with no TEP for warranty replacements. Sounds like you don't have an upgrade coming yet either.
Hopefully one of these other guys will have some insite into how to help this situation, but I am not sure what to do with a bad usb port.
monke30butt, will you help me one-on-one through PM or Messenger if I were to decide on replacing for another Epic? I really love the phone, just not happy with the RAM. If what you said is true, then I am interested in what you did on your Epic, so I can do the same. I don't do much, but I have themes, locker, launcher, other customs that takes up RAM. If you could help me, I would be willing to exchange for a new Epic. If you can't, I could try to risk the S3. The Epic is so glorious with the camera quality (compared to mom's phone making green look yellowish in aquariums), that Epic makes the green so deeply dark and lushy.
And I wonder how to add a stabilization feature to the camera's video?
If you need help, I can try to lend a hand.
For my current setup: All I did was root the phone, flash Clean GB MTD (The Peoples ROM is said to be good too), adjusted CPU speed with SetCPU & adjusted SD cache size to make the best use out of the class 10 memory card I installed (it flys now!!!). I didn't do anything special. The Dev's that cook up the ROM'S, mods, & various fixes should get ALL of the credit for the improvements of how the phone works. I just used what they posted.
They say the CM roms are very good too, but I have not personally tried them yet. Trying to decide between TPR next or CM7 w/crespo modem.
Yes, I've rooted this phone before and well, I don't know how I was able to do it, but I got it rooted, which is amazing for a retard like me. It was so kool. I can't remember what ROM I used and I got heavy help thru a chat on here and some people helped thru texting, etc. Then later, I had problems and it was hard for me to solve and accept updates and many things, so I went back to stock and I don't remember how I did that. Everything you said that you used are way different than what I used, so I guess those were developed way after the time I was into rooting and those wasn't available. At the end, when I went back to stock, the Epic place was slowing down and people were moving on, but surprised me to see some activity on here, especially from ya, so thanks. I will consider what I want, exchange or get S3. Another reason why I went back to stock was that with GO DEV Launcher EX, there was a glorious blue theme that was so perfect that it was everything that I wanted. When I rooted, I wanted to do that, cuz I wanted a nice theme for locker, text message, contact, etc, but I found out that GO made it possible for all of that without rooting, so it made it so much easier for a lil retard like me, but I do miss the plentiful of RAM and removal of Sprint's junk including that stupid Optimizer, etc.
Well, that explains your RAM problems. The GO products are nice, but they eat your resources.
Go to the development section and go to the rooting sticky. Watch QBKing's video a couple times. Even my 2 year old could do it after watching that.

Yeah. GO are very devious. I've always wanted to start Wake Up GO DEVils website to force them to listen and change. One example, in the Dialer, they took away the ability for us to dial a number and select Text. The only big button available down there is Call, which is highly offensive to thousands of deaf customers. Hundreds of emails, GO DEVils continued to ignore. Plus, they do random "air push" (I think is whats the name) notification ads and adding icon ads. Want to know the shocking thing? Mine are free (maybe one was paid, I dunno), but majority of what I downloaded and used are free. Not once do I get any junky ads. Okay....how about mom? Tons of ads!!! She and I use the same thing other than hers are pink theme (which are a paid feature) and those are loaded with ads. Did the GO DEVils ever listen once to correct this and behave? Never!
Lol that's go for ya... if you decide to stick with the epic and want to root it... you can pm me for help or hit me up on gtalk... I am pretty active on here and can walk you through it... gtalk is xda username at gmail.com....

It looks like Radio Shack is trying to scam people. Their $99 price is for new account only and it doesn't include new line, either, that I had done for my Epic. The new line price is $199. So, I am leaning toward replacing the Epic with another Epic. However, I do need to know something. GS3 have Stabilization for the pix/vidz, which is something that I seriously need since I always do pix and vidz with my smartphone. Epic does not have that. Is this a hardware or software feature? If it is a software feature, are there any camera app on the market that includes Stabilization? If not, I will fork over the money for the GS3. Btw, now I see two people offering one-on-one help. That makes it super hard for me to decide and pick one.
If I do decide on staying with the Epic, then rooting will mainly be for the RAM space as I will continue to use GO software and themes that I love.
