Can not send MMS with mobile data disabled - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

This behavior appeared after i applied the official 2.3 RUU on my desire.
Can someone confirm this problem?
Any ideas on how to solve it?

Have you contacted Vodafone/searched their help pages to check that you have the correct MMS settings (the upgrade may have wiped the settings, especially if your phone was branded)? If not, they would be a good place to start - more often than not, they can send the settings to your phone, for you.

The only problem with mms i have had is when the picture size is too much?! Even though my settings have a max of like 2mb it still would not send, but after reducing the image to like 300kb it worked?
Not a proper fix but i'm curious, because it would say sending for hours but never work

MMS Messaging Size on Orange UK

So I've recently discovered that the Desire is auto resizing pictures I send to < 20kb from 900kb+ when sending an mms. There is no option anywhere on the phone that I can see to change the auto resize or to prompt a resize sizing option; now I've scoured the internet with a fine comb and I can find a couple of possible causes people have suggested:
- The network has not updated their user profile settings
- It's a fault with the android/Desire MMS settings
- It's the fact the picture is being added as a slideshow, and not just as an image.
So I've been through the settings and tried to eliminate anything that could or could not be true. Adding a picture via the image gallery or manually hitting "attach" via the mms creation page doesn't change the fact the pictures are added as slideshows. I'm not sure if this can eliminate this as a cause but there is no other way to add an mms to the HTC Messaging program within the phone.
As far as all my MMS settings go I've been on the phone with a very nice tech support guy from orange and he and I are most puzzled whythe phone is doing this. One suggestion he had that might be a problem is that the phone is a generic handset and has not been flashed with the orange rom. Apparently there were some HTC guys in the orange building today and they said photo messaging was working fine. I'm not sure how fine the testing was, but if they checked file size limits and the such, it would give a possible answer to why my Desire isnt resizing messages properly.
There are numerous threads about O2 and them not updating their MMS User Profile settings to be compatible with the desire, however o2 have apparently updated their settings and some people have reported mms messages working ok. The guy on the phone said that he wasn't aware of any user profile updates but he's also not sure if he would be informed about this if it were updated.
Some other things I've tried in the phone include changing the max mms setting limit from default to 300kb, I've double and triple checked the MMS settings with orange and lastly I tried using an app called handcent.
Now, handcent does actually seem to increase the size that the pictures are compressed down to, but still to a measly ~80kb and nothing near the ~250kb my old HTC Touch HD used to do.
My next port of call is to call HTC UK and their tech support to see if they know about this and if theres a fix for it. Interestingly, Android 2.2 should be coming to the desire in the coming weeks so we'll see if that might just magically fix it. Unfortunately HTC Support isn't open till monday so no MMSs over the weekend!
I'll try and keep this updated with information as I get it as I'm sure other people are finding this problem, not necessarily with orange, but maybe with other networks.
Has anyone else had this issue and have they found an applicable solution?
I know what you mean, as I also had the Touch HD, previously to my Desire. I have the same MMS problem, so i'm curious for the Solution.

Hi...I took have exactly the same problems with my unbranded HTC desire using my Orange sim card....please do post back if you find anything out!
Many thanks!

wow, totally forgot about this thread... apologies!
I've spoken to both orange and HTC tech support now, orange were particularly unhelpful and assured me that there was no such thing as an mms user profile; so well done to them.
HTC were much more helpful and I was told that it is something they've received some reports on over the past few weeks as people have been getting their hands on the desire. Apparently it happened on the Nexus-One too, but some have reported that 2.2 Android (codename: Froyo) has fixed a lot of things on the Nexus-One and HTC are hoping it will fix the MMS problems on the desire too. As for when 2.2 will be coming to the desire, there is much speculation but the guy on the phone at HTC said "june" to me.
Fingers crossed it'll all be fixed and I can send images nice and large again!
Its not going to be June, i guess... lol

Well everyone knows corporate bsns is srs.
I saw a blog post somewhere from techradar or something (don't quote me on that) that it was expected in Q3 of 2010.. so before september perhaps
I submitted a bug report for this to HTC about 3months ago, and they never got back to me about it, a workaround is to install handcent sms, and use that to send mms... thats what i do
2.2 will be available OTA in the Netherlands as from Today. Hope that will solve the MMS issue for me.

Had this issue myself back in april/may and thought it was resolved when o2 finally got there act together and started selling the desire. Unfortunatley this only seemed to work with there stock o2 rom. Switching to any other rom (rooted) caused the mms issue. I have now finally found a rom that works and brings in mms at the correct size. tested with a 196kb pic and it came in the same size. the rom i am now using is the Modaco R6 froyo rom without the HTC messaging app so just using the stock android messaging app. The only other rom previous to this was pays 1.1 rom on eclair (android 2.1) as my partner is using this rom on the same network and this works fine. o2 were useless as helping but i guess with there stock rom it does work so cant blame them on this occaision.
Have you tried Handcent and changing the custom useragent , it didnt work for me but may be worth ago.

thats interesting that the generic rom had the mms problem, whereas the o2 version didn't... most peculiar. That makes me think that maybe the carriers are limiting MMS size in some way? Perhaps thats totally paranoid and maybe not even possible but perhaps if someone is running a rom that is not their own, they aren't letting them send as much data for whatever reason?
I don't want to root my desire just yet, so I won't be moving from the stock HTC rom for the forseeable future.
I have tried handcent yes, but I actually quite dislike the program as an sms tool, maybe I didn't give it enough of a chance. It didn't actually completely fix the problem either, only increased the picture size by a marginal amount.
In other news I just updated to 2.2 Froyo today on my desire, stock rom... no Orange branding or whatnot. Sadly, the MMS resizing pictures problem has not been fixed. I'll be calling HTC tomorrow and see if they have any ideas. Failing that I might just have to live with it and start sending pictures via email rather than to peoples phones.
How do you actually determine what size to set your MMS image at? Wouldn't your service provider have a set size limit at which MMS messages can be sent at and also the recipients carrier would have a set size limit it can receive MMS at?
I am probably wrong but I always assumed this is why MMS images are downscaled so much
I can confirm it hasn't been fixed with the generic 2.2 rom, I reported this bug like 6months ago now, i gave them a detailed description and a how to reproduce it

this has nothing to do with the operator, its a HTC mms bug, where its shrinking the image on the device side (because it forces it to be a slideshow, rather than just an image)

Oh okay cool thanks for the info, I just sent a MMS on froyo and it was 50KB so it didn't scale down so +1 from me. I couldn't find any specific information on MMS size for three mobile, but came across some size limits for international MMS which were around 100kb to 300kb.

UK general carrier limit (and I'm pretty sure three mobile falls under this too, but don't quote me on that) is 300kb per MMS message, if you press menu in the messaging app you can get to a mms size limit setting which you can set to 100, 200 or 300kb. Doing this makes no difference to what the device will do to the pictures, as it does indeed add the image as a slideshow. Last time I spoke to HTC they weren't sure if it was the fact it was a slideshow causing a problem, or whether it was the operators settings causing problems. I personally think the former is more likely, and there are no settings anywhere on the device to change the compressed picture size.
Also FYI, a 50kb picture is almost certainly compressed unless it was really really small in the first place. I take pictures of 1mb+ with my desire, haven't fiddled with any settings on the camera yet tho.
What I find more curious is that if it doesn't overly compress the pictures size on an o2 stock rom (read a few posts up), maybe its simply a setting hidden somewhere in the depths of android that HTC just haven't enabled.
I'll be calling HTC tomorrow and see if they have any ideas.

HTC wont do nothing as it is down the network i am afraid. o2 wanted me to send the phone back to them as they said it was faulty which of course i rubbish. It is soley down to the rom itself, there was a fix for other phones, someone patched the mms.apk but i could not get this to work.
I am waiting for madaco to release the new 2.2 stock rom in there kitchen so i can take off the htc messaging and put the stock android one back in to see if this is still resolved on this one. hopefully it will work otherwise i will just stick to the R6 rom i am running now as not got any problems with it and mms messages come through at full size.

[Q] unable to use browser but can update weather/fb/email etc?

I've got a bit of weird problem on HTC Desire.
I've noticed that whenever I'm using my mobile internet data (Vodafone Aus), I can't actually do any sort of web browsing, but I can use the facebook app, update the weather widget, retrieve email from hotmail + Gmail etc, basically everything that needs internet access except use the browser.
I've tried both the default and Dolphin HD with no luck - Google home page will load but that's only because its in the cache - I can't do any new Google searches etc.
I know the phone can access websites because I can browse the net when I connect to my uni's WiFi, or any other WiFi.
Wondering if there's some kind of mobile internet setting I should be changing that I'm not aware that might solve this?
I know I should call Vodafone and ask them to check if there's somehow a problem on my account on their end but figured I might ask on here first to see if anyone else has had anything like this happen before I do so - just so they don't turn around and tell me its the phone.
(when I went in to set up the plan, the lady specifically told me that they took no responsibility for their services working on a "non Vodafone phone")
Oh and I don't think its worthy to note, but just in case:
ever since I switched to the contract from pre-paid I haven't been able to send international text, despite having roaming activated. Since I switched plans when I got the new phone, I can't actually determine if its the contract, the phone, or both that's not letting me send (but I suspect its Vodafone - something else I need to hassle them about)
Any help would be awesome
Sounds like you don't have some settings. Give Vodafone a ring and see if they can send the correct settings to your phone. They won't take responsibility but they can help you like that since your using their service. If that doesn't work, have a look in the APN settings.

Thanks Meaple, I'll have a go, although Vodafone generally redirects you to their website where you input your phone model and it gives you the APN values you need to put in, which I have done.
Having said that, I can't send MMS with my phone despite having their APN values, so I know the MMS part must be wrong somehow
- I didn't think it could be the APN because the internet isn't completely inaccessible? Is it possible for apps to be able to use the net while the browser can't?
Never mind - Solved my problem.
In my attempt to fix my MMS problem way back, I changed settings around and stupidly added the "MMS Port" and "MMS proxy" as the proxy + port for internet, without realising the actual options for those two were further down.
- Deleted those, and went back and re-did the setup for the MMS as per vodafone instructions, setting up a separate "VF PXT" APN
(in my search for solutions I'd found a post somewhere saying you could combine the information for MMS and internet into 1 APN, and that's what I had done)
Cheers for nudging me to re-check APN settings, Meaple

[Q] Text Messaging Problems, native Email, etc. (HTC Incredible)

Hello there,
I'm relatively new to XDA but I've heard that pretty much any problem can be solved through you guys. So here we go. I have an original HTC Incredible (hence the title) which is rooted and has the Android Business Gingersense 2.3.5 ROM installed. My problem is hard to explain, yet may be very simple. I simply cannot send or receive text messages to my knowledge.
So here are the details. Whenever I compose a text message in the native "Messages" app, I click send and the "Loading..." little window with the spinny circle pops up for a split second, disappears and nothing happens. It doesn't show me that the message was sent, nor does it give me an error message saying that it didn't send. Nothing. I have heard, however, from the people I sent the messages to that some of them did in fact go through, but I just didn't know they did cause it didn't show up on my screen. They also said they texted me back multiple times trying to get a hold of me to no avail, which is the other problem. I also cannot receive any messages. It may be that these issues are connected in some way but I am not sure.
Another problem. My native email app has the same sort of issue, only when I compose a message and hit send, it force closes the app saying, "an unexpected problem has occurred." Therefore I cannot send or receive emails as well. Quite inconvenient as many of you probably know.
One last issue involving the texting problem. May not have anything to do with the native sms app, but I believe there is still a possibility. I mainly text with Pinger's TextFree application, which not surprisingly has the same problem as the native app. Every time I try to send a message, NOTHING happens, yet I get reports from the people I "sent" the message to that they actually got the message and tried to get back up with me multiple times. Still, I didn't receive anything. But I did go on the web based version of the app and saw both of our messages between each other and the web app worked fine.
Any help at all is greatly appreciated and I hope I can get this resolved.
Thanks alot!
Almost sounds like a data/mms config problem. Are you able to receive any messages or emails at all?

I just flashed the new cynagenmod 9 to my Dinc, and can't received texts either. I can send them with no problem, but neither the native text program or the GOSms app are able to receive texts.
Any help?

Open the stock messaging app then hit menu - settings - connection settings, there will be 5 settings greyed out in there. What are the current settings for those 5?
Edit: Nevermind i forgot were talking about cm9, might not the same settings as sense. Better yet go to the market and download "apn backup and restore", do a backup and then go to the sdcard then the apn backup folder and then open the xml backup with a text editor and copy and paste its contents to here. You are on verizon correct?

Okay, I think I have figured it out. Before I reflashed, I deleted my Google account. Then, reflashed C9 and when prompted on reboot to sign into Google, I clicked "later".
So, now I received several test text messages I had sent the past 2 days.
So far, so good.
Also, when I restore from Titanium, I am only going to restore Apps, but not the System Data.
I think Google is somehow interfering with things. Maybe something funky with how my Google Voice is interacting with my phone. Who knows. Anyway, I will be sure to report back here to help others that may have similar problems.
Well, so far so good. When I re-installed Apps I de-selected Data.
Texting is fine now.
Perhaps it was the System Data from prior ROMs interfering with the current ROM?

One more follow-up. I now Restored all data for the apps separately through Titanium.
Texting still works.
I think when I flashed the new C9 ROM, when I restored Apps+Data in Titanium, something got screwed up and thus the texting function got screwed up.
Now able to send SMS texts but NOT receive them
I'm reviving this thread.
I have checked out a few other threads, and this comes the closest to describing my issues with my rooted unlocked (SEC OFF) HTC Droid Incredible (version 1).
I did NOT change ROMs -- right after getting the DINC, I installed a rooted stock deodexed GB 2.3.4 ROM from DINC.DOES-IT.NET, and I have not touched the ROM since.
BTW, the ROM build is 4.06.605.3 CL 140944 release-keys
Ditto baseband radios, no change. Version: 2.15.10.07.07
I did recently update the kernel to a version of gingertiny that allows apps to record phone conversations without the speakerphone being turned on.
Old version: 2.6.35.14-gingertiny-v2+ Feb 2012
New Version: 2.6.35.14-gingertiny-v2 Nov 6 2012
It is POSSIBLE that the problems started with the change of kernel, because I don't use texting very much at all, but that was still a few weeks ago.
Based on what I have read on XDA, I went into Clockwork Mod 5.x Recovery, deleted and reformatted the data cache, and rebooted.
After that, I could SEND but NOT RECEIVE text SMS.
I had some doubts about whether all my calls were ringing through properly. I am still not entirely sure, but test calls from a landline and mobile phone did ring the phone, so maybe that is no longer (or maybe was not ever?) a problem.
I have seen suggestions to do everything from reinstalling ROM (being sure to restore only apps+data, NOT system data) to flashing a new radio to running *228 over-the-air update to manually upgrading the PRL list.
And then there is the question I have about the kernel change somehow being the culprit...
EDIT: One other thing I did right before changing the kernel was run Convert2Ext4 v2.0 using the "no data limit normal dalvik" version. My reason for running this was to get rid of the low memory/no memory warnings, lockups and crashes I was expriencing despite having over 300MB left out of 775MB on internal memory.
How should I go about trying to restore the ability to receive SMS without totally bricking or otherwise disrupting my DINC and causing more harm than good?
The SMS issue is not a kernel-related issue. I'm reading and re-reading the thread and I'm not 100% positive on what caused the issue for you. Also the convert mod would have no impact on phone related features (data/SMS/calls). Also on the convert mod, the 750MB internal memory (/data) partition is not what was causing the low storage, it's the 150MB /data/data partition that HTC uses for app data/libs/cache.
Process of elimination says go back to the previous kernel from February and see if you have the texting issue. Go back to the same exact build and see if that fixes it. I'd be surprised if the kernel change caused it as a lot of people are using gingertiny without issue.
Also a couple of other thoughts. Are you using the stock SMS app or a third party? Try uninstalling any third party SMS apps temporarily if you have them. Last suggestion is to call Verizon and see if they have a block on receiving SMS. I don't think they would since you can send them and it has to be customer initiated.
Also, no where in your post did it say you tested SMS, just that you couldn't receive them so I'm guessing your conclusion is from the fact that someone said they sent it and you didn't receive them.

Thanks for having a look in, Tiny.
I use PagePlus running off VZW towers. PagePlus service rep sent me an SMS while I was in contact with her by phone, she said it got deducted from by cash balance. The only thing is, it did not actually reach my phone!
I have only used the stock SMS app until just yesterday, when I installed Handcent SMS. That did not help. Will uninstall, but I doubt that will make a difference.
Will go back to the old gingertiny kernel and see what that does, and report back here.
If that doesn't do it, maybe it's time for a Touch of Blue ROM, with which many seem to be doing so wiell...

SMS's not sending - Have to reboot to send.

I'm having an issue with my SMS where after a while they will sit in my inbox trying to send but not actually send or fail. I physically have to reboot the phone for them then to send. I had an issue with sms notifications after I installed a custom rom. Then learned that my problem comes from the hearbeat interval settings. I think my carrier uses a custom value (5min is default) and since I changed the rom, their settings have not been pushed to my phone.
Testing several things I came across this app. It will not hurt to try it:
Install an app called "pnf push notification fixer". Is free from store.
Set the heartbeat mobile interval to 3 minutes.
Reboot.
Make sure the value did not change itself
Monitor and see if the problem stays the same.
This maintains the connection alive for me.
Have you checked when you experience the issue if the sms carrier center number removes or changes?
On the dialer press *#*#4636#*#*
Select phone info
Scroll down to smsc and hit refresh. Note the number when working. When it stops, repeat the process and check if the number is diff or was removed. You can also hardcode one there.

I have the same issue.
I've tried what jmoneste wrote, but the problem still persist. SMS keep failing. Everytime I want a message to be sent I have to activate airplane mode and then desactivate en resend the SMS. It's so annoying.
This problems comes from stock rom and now I'm using the Viper One ROM but it still fails.

Not receiving images via sms

I am able to text images to people and they get them with issues. If anybody sends me one it didn't come thru. There is a link that says download and I get a busy cursor and it never downloads. I have tried clearing the cache and clearing the data for the stock messages app. I have tried using Google messages and the same thing happens. Any ideas how to fix this?

I have tried clearing the cache and clearing the data for the stock messages app. I have tried using Google messages and the same thing happens. Any ideas how to fix this?

Did you check your APN settings and make sure they are right?
Check the APN setting for your carrier, I've had same problem in the past and it was always a problem with the APN setting.
It was working fine until Friday. I will check the apn and see though
It was working fine until Friday and didn't make any apn changes. I just looked and the settings all are what they should be. Sorry for the double pay. My app didn't refresh properly

Are you using a custom DNS entry or some sort of DNS changer? This can and does on occasion break MMS capabilities. I have had this problem and by disabling the custom entry (or app) MMS returns to normal.
Did you do anything or make any changes to or with the phone at all prior to MMS not working?
You could also contact your provider and see if they have any seevice problems or issues. It is possible that there maybe a problem on the providers end.. either provisioning, account setting or something else.
They also may need to refresh the device on the network, sometimes when things like that happened to me this usually solved it.
Two other things you can try and/or check.
If your roaming or not. Depending on the provider and plan you might not be able to send mms while roaming. Either they do not offer data use while roaming, or else a data limit is in use (and you hit that limit).
Try resetting the network settings. On your phone it would be under settings > General Management > Reset > Reset Network Settings. This will rest all the network settings back to default. Only draw back to this is any saved bluetooth devices and WIFI access points will be lost, so you will have to enter them in again.
I had an issue with mms once too and no matter what i did it wouldnt correct itself. Even factory reset. I changed the sim card to a new one and it worked. Dont know why but it worked. If you have an extra one try that.
I had the same exact issue! It started around Oct. 11th. I didn't even know that I was missing images from friends...they thought I was ignoring their texts. This problem was driving me nuts. I had been searching everywhere for answers and can't believe you described the same exact problem.
I'm on an Unlocked N10+ & I flashed the ATT firmware months ago and thought this might have something to do with it. I never owned an Unlocked phone before. Turns out that it was my own user error -->
I hadn't changed any of the APN settings. I was using Pulse SMS, tried Google Android Messages then the stock SMS app. No luck. I reset the network settings around 4 times. I thought this was the fix because it seemed to work for awhile but only with the stock messaging app. New images came in at first & I could only retrieve those older missing photos for the current day. The missing images were all listed as Unknown Caller. Later on in the day, I wasn't receiving images again...in any SMS app.
I was going to restore/reset my phone today but before that I started backing items up and checked my backed up SMS messages and the 2 recent ones said Oct. 31st!!!. WTH!?!
I then went into my Date/Time settings, I toggled the switch on and off again for the Automatic Date and Time. Re-selected my Time Zone and made sure that the Date and Time were accurate. They weren't...
I'm sure that this is where I screwed everything up because I had set my date (a couple of times in the past few weeks) ahead 5 days to see if I'd get the latest software/firmware update. I forgot to switch something back to my usual (and accurate) date & time setting which includes setting my time zone.
So far, this process seemed to work. I'm once again getting SMS/MMS images and videos within Pulse SMS.
