Hello everybody,
I..am...retarded. I saw a lot of dust in my microphone port so naturally i got a can of compressed air to try to "fix" it. Well it broke my microphone, it still works but i would have to scream like a woman in a porno for anyone to hear me...not an option lol. So I'm running CM7 and I need a way to put everything as close to stock as possible so that the technician won't update my phone to the newest gingerbread update. I found THIS post but I don't know which one to install (being the noob that I am). I plan to uninstall ALL of the apps that require root permissions and back them up to my sd card...then install the stock ROM and hope and pray the technician doesn't see that i'm rooted.
So what do you guys think? is that enough to fool a technician? And what rom do i need to install? deodexed or odexed? and what's zip aligned?
Sorry for the noobiness but my mind has gone blank xP
thanks for all the help
If you are S-OFF just flash a sense rom and let it ota update. If you used unrevoked to root your phone then the ota cannnot set it S-ON. Then take it in. When u get phone back flash a custom recovery and go from there. Also put in an old sd-card that has no signs of custom roms and such. That's what i would do
Honestly if I were you I would just use a bluetooth headset. If you return the phone to sprint you are going to be screwed over, for now at least, with the unrooted 2.3.3. Wait till they get a root for that, then get sprint to replace it.
Unless you get a mentally handicapped tech they will check to see if you have s-off. They see you do and you are screwed.

it only picks up your voice if you moan "OH GOD YES DEEPER!!"? lol joking aside.
your mic is built into your top panel. so replacing the phone is POSSIBLE, but check with your local sprint store and see if they can just replace the touch panel. thats what we do at my store.

-.- well here's hoping mine doesn't haha. And either way, I can wait a little while to get root again. But I'll miss my CM7 :'( I'm not much of a fan of UI skins on android. I hope sprint gets the nexus prime

You can hope all you want, but you're gonna have GB on that phone.
HOWEVER, some refurbished phones were sent in with S-OFF and they are being sent back out with S-OFF so pray to the refurbishing gods that you get lucky
You can just take it in and they will usually just replace the mic, just let them know you don't want any software update.

You better be extremely adamant about not updating the OS. Like almost paranoid about it, people upfront often won't relay that info to the tech. I'd even put a mini post it on the battery or inside the back of the battery casing saying "DO NOT UPDATE SOFTWARE" or something of the likes. lol
The sprint tech said he couldn't repair it but didn't give a reason. Since they are sending a replacement can't they just use the parts from that phone to repair mine and send back that phone?

Well my replacement turned out to be S-OFF but I didn't find that out until i got my evo 3d and got home and checked xP. I figure I might mess with it for a while, keep it, or just sell it once cm7 comes out on the 3d (or a good stripped down sense version). So if anyone is interested in buying it, I'll provide some pics of the phone to show its S-OFF so you can know its legit.

Hey everyone.
So I have finally decided that the dust being under my evo's screen has gotten annoying enough to where i want to get it cleaned. Problem is that i'm rooted. My question here today is that will flashing a barebones stock rooted sense rom and removing the superuser app be enough to get by the sprint repair techs? I really don't want to have to unroot and then turn s-on.

Any input?
Nobody can really say if it's enough or not. It's a gamble. I used a ruu for mine and put everything back to stock. I also removed my sd card because I had read about someone taking their phone in and the tech saw on the card there was root related stuff on there. The guy must have did something or the tech was an ass because he said they refused to fix it and flagged his account that it's a rooted phone.
If you can run the autoroot method, then it's not difficult to do. The script does all the dirty work for you.
If you were too lazy to put everything back to stock and they found out, you would be kicking yourself in the ass for not being more thorough. I'm not trying to be a **** or insult you. I'm saying better being safe than sorry.
If the tech discovers tampering, and they are a ****, then it's all over for your hopes to get it fixed man. Good luck
Here is where I got the one I used before taking it in. I got version 3.70 at the bottom.

Agreed
I agree with the hammer. It isn't that hard to unroot your phone at all, it should only take 15 minutes or so. I have heard of some Sprint tech's being cool, and working on a phone regardless of whether it was rooted or not. I have also read of people being given a hard time, and even having their account red flagged. There is no way of knowing if you will get a cool tech, that won't care, or a guy that takes his job too seriously and plays by allt he rules. Due to it being such an unpredictable outcome, I would recommend just unrooting before going in. If you rooted with unrevoked, flash their S-on tool in recovery, then RUU back to stock, or run a PC36IMG of a stock rom through the bootloader. If you never ran unrevoked or unrevoked forever, I don't think you need to flash the S-on tool, just running the RUU should turn your S-on. Once it's all fixed up, use one of the many root methods available, and it'll be like a clean start!
I appreciate both responses and am just gonna run with the unreveoked s on since that's how I rooted. My nands should still be good though correct?

As long as you end up with the same phone (which you surely will). You just don't really want to interchange nandroid backups between different phones, as you run the risk of over writing your RSA keys. If you do, you need to remove the wimax.img from the nandroid backup before running it. And one more thing. Not to be paranoid, but I've seen someone get screwed from it...you should remove anything from your sd card that is related to rooting, flashing, etc. I've seen a guy report of getting his account redflagged and service was refused, because the tech found ROMS, kernels, mods, and other stuff on the sd card. That was supposedly enough evidence of rooting to red flag the account. Surely that is unlikely, but you never know. So it may not hurt to copy your sd card to your computer, then format the card before bringing it in. Or just taking the sd card out all together before you bring it in. Take it for what its worth, and good luck on getting your screen fixed!
I gave the advice that probably 99.9% will get you to where you need to be to safely get it fixed or replaced. It is up to you if you do or do not want to take a chance with a modded phone.
Hello,
I used to be a Service an Repair Area Manager. In the MI area.
I personaly did not care if the phone was rooted or not, being the screen is just dirty I personaly would have never even looked at software.
If Your really worried about your sprint tech's looking into things its also not hard to just take the digitiser off and clean it yourself, let me know if you want to know how to get it done.

Isn't this the millionth thread about should I take a rooted phone in?
Sent from my rooted HTC EVO using the xda app!
Non-software related issues do not warrant checking software. If you bring a rooted device into my store for hardware issues, I probably won't even check it. And if I do notice, it's not a problem since hardware != software.
Now if you come into my store complaining that your device is freezing, camera isn't working, etc and you're a jerk when I say it could be the root or ROM, then I'll flag your account.
All in all, if you're having software problems on a root device, don't take it to Sprint. Hardware is still a go.

Hahaha! Not this time. But nice try. Hopefully u understand that it is a gamble and there is no real answer. It just depends on the tech and the actual store. My lcd was replaced and I was worried because I couldn't unroot mine without a display. Turned out they fixed it no questions asked. I got lucky. Some people don't. It is either rooted or not no matter how far u customize. And they either care or don't.

I just updated my EVO to 2.3.3 without knowing that unrevoked can't root it. I was just curious if anyone knows if there is any way to root the EVO with the most recent update? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You can't root or downgrade the OTA yet, you'll have to wait.
If you had to guess, how long will it take? I'm just really anxious to root my phone and put Cyanogen 6-7 on it lol.
In the same boat. Just got a replacement phone today.
It sucks, I just want to root my phone lol. I mean I love sense, don't get me wrong but I just like to completely customize my phone. As well as get more apps.

so where is our root? I would like to know this> This is not acceptable.
I would like to know where our root is as well. It is quite unacceptable. It should have been done before or directly after the update was released.

I'm sorry, but this is what's unacceptable. It's not like you have some God given right to root your phone, and how dare someone not dedicate more of there time towards helping you, for free at that. I mean, what do you think is going to happen? A developer is going to read your post and think, "oh ****, he's irritated, I better get on the ball!"
Yeah, probably not. It's still a sweet phone, just relax and enjoy it. There's more than enough to do to keep you occupied.

Ok i know this is stupid. But can someone please tell me how to HARD brick my htc evo 4g, its got the latest hboot so i just need to know how.
if i do the 4.24 update and while its updating, pull battery, will it brick?
WTF? is wrong with you? lmao! Are you kidding?! wow. I don't know how to reply. lol. well, there is an app called wank-o-meter. go download it. You'll have fun with your hand tonight. :-D
If ur s-off u can do battery pulls while flashing radios...what is ur reason 4 trying 2 brick...just wondering

it has no functioning camera ( blurry like a 50's tv)
halo affect from screen leakage
I am s-on. I dont know how but i got the 4.22 and 4.24 update doesnt show.
SO is it possible the software update if it shows begins and i yank the battery out, will it brick
go back and speak with a manager. but remember that you will lose your rooted phone. if you TRUELY want a new phone and will get one no matter what... then unroot your phone and set all settings as default. like I said. TAKE IT TO THE STORE! don't purposely **** it up worse. However, if you DON'T PUT A STICKER ON THE PHONE ITSELF NOTING THE CAMERA IS BAD, IT WILL END RIGHT BACK IN THE FIELD IN SOMEONE ELSES HANDS. because they don't care if they send a defective right back out.
its not rooted.
also i know they will do that. Howdo u think i got it
wtf. okay. then take it back to the store. find out if it is a corp or fran store. sounds like a piece of **** franchise store! tell them THAT THEY WILL do as you ask. it is a defect of the phone. then threaten you'll report them if they don't follow your orders.
Sprint customer service is who replaced it. The thing is they said it runs fine from their Provisioning test

honestly, i called and got a previous rep, thank god, and he said i can ***** n complain about the phone and the service i recieved and they will give me a free upgrade so i wont leave.
you can already get a free upgrade. they're promoting it. But, I'd take the evo3d if you can get it early. lol. if my phone broke. I would get the evo 3d. but only if it breaks. yours is broken. hell. take the upgrade. BUT REMEMBER. there are SOOOOO going to be better phones in the next year. they won't let you upgrade twice.
Rite. I just got my evo back around Jan. Gonna bypass the evo 3d n wait it out...

FALSE. Sprint ISC's service and exchange phones.
Ok so yea I took the OTA 4.24 (dont know what possessed me at the moment) and now im suffering from the loss of my root I reckon if I give a good enough excuse or tweak the phone a little bit to make some disfunctions in it , Sprint could exchange for another phone which is a 50/50 chance of it being back on froyo . So if anyone would love to share any ideas of pure slickness please share before I take the phone to the top of mount everest, aim it towards HTC headquarters , yell LOOK WHAT YOU MADE ME DO at the top of my lungs, and throw it as if its the final throw in the next superbowl.
the chances are slimmer with every day that passes. I'd say 99% sure you will get the other one with GB.
Also root is not a valid reason to have your phone exchanged, if its fully functional the rep won't help you.
also for when you throw it,
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gAYL5H46QnQ
Have you checked to see if you're still s-off? If so, you can just flash a recovery then flash a rooted rom.
Edit: and yeah, your replacement will have Gingerbread. Very slim chance otherwise, so I wouldn't even try.

Ive had my baby Evo for 10 months (the best phone Ive had ever) but recently (due to some accidents Im guessing) the touch (digitizer) is sometimes being not responsive, some times it gets all crazy and doesnt work or chooses options without me touching the screen. I tried different roms to see if a rom or app was the problem, but it kept happening. my Q is, if I replace my Evo for a new one at a Sprint Store, will I have a hard time rooting it? Cause Ive heard of ppl replacing theirs and being unable to root or having to do some wierd procedures to get root... any help is appreciated!!
I think that depends in what hboot is sent to you and then I think you have to use htc unlock, you can see if a sprint repair store can replace the screen (i heard it can cost $35 or more,if they'll do it at the closest repair store)
Tapa away from a galaxy far away
A new evo will probably come with Android 2.3.3 which means that the only way to root is to use the revolutionary root method. Googling revolutionary root should bring up some guides so you can decide if you think its worth it for you
Swyped from my synergized best friend
ok so if I had to get my phone replaced (I rlly hope not) then I can still root it? also would it be best to have the screen replaced at Sprint or buy it somewhere and replace it myself?
Yes you should still be able to root. a lot of people got stuck unrooted because of the 2.3.3 update but revolutionary root works on that Android version now. And if you have insurance then the sprint store might be the safer way to go. Just make sure you unroot first just in case
Swyped from my synergized best friend
To answer your second question, no, you will have no problems rooting, as any version is rootable with Revolutionary.
However, since your evo is 10 months old, you will not get a brand new one. You will get a refurb.

The digitizer and screen are two different parts. If you are having touch problems, thats the digitizer, and can usually be replaced in a sprint store.
