So far I have always been running rooted stock ROMS. From what I read they tent to be very stable, the battery last longer, and do not lose some features (4G, HDMI) etc.
However lately, probably because of the apps I have installed, the phone is pretty slow, the memory on the phone is running out and does not work properly.
It is time for a complete wipe. However I am not the kind the person that change rom once a week. I would like something for the long term.
I have a few questions (feel free to answer to a subset of them):
1) I can I maximize the free space on the phone? On stock you can update a stock app (ex flash, acrobat reader, etc) but you cannot uninstalled. I was wondering if after the update, I have now the app taking twice as much space that is supposed to.
2) What is the best way to backup all the apps on the phone and restore them quickly, being able to chose what and what not? I am using Titanium Backup but it is not clear what is an installed app and what is system app. How do I guarantee that I do not lose the app data? I am trying to find a way that once I update the ROM I can configure/restore the apps that I want without having to spend hours on it. What I am afraid is to install/restore something that it is not going to work but it takes spaces on the phone. One of the thing I really want to keep is the email configuration (3 gmails account, 1 hotmail and the link with Facebook accounts).
3) I am using App 2 SD Free but there are some large apps that cannot be moved on the SD (gmail, facebook, qik, flash, maps, twitter, Google Music, G+, etc). Does any work around exist to save precious space on the phone?
4) Regarding stability, not bloated, and full features available on OTA (4G, Bluetooth, HDMI, etc) What is the best ROM? It's actually very easy to tell which are user apps with TB. They're the ones in white text

MIUI, as long as you don't need 4G, everything else works and it's extremely stable. Other than a few times trying other ROMs, I've been using it as a Daily since June

What is the quickest way to use terminal? Do I need the dev tools on my computer and put the phone in debug mode?
Where is the Dalvik Cache normally stored? I thought it was on RAM. Since it is a cache, I would expect that it changes often. Is it not going to wear out the sd card quickly?
2) The point is that I want to save also some system settings (ex: remembered password of wifis, browser history, sync settings, etc). Last backup save 203 items. It is going to be a pain to go thought one by one.
4) I looked at MIUI but I ruled it out because it does not support 4G. I use it every now and then.
Like you I was having some problems with my rooted stock (low phone memory, slow and some other performance issues).
I downloaded ROM Manager and then made a backup of my rooted stock. You can also do it manually by booting into recovery but ROM Manager is easier though some people will say is more prone to errors. Also download Titanium Backup or something similar and save all of the apps (both download and system apps).
Once I backed up my rooted stock ROM I then downloaded and installed the latest Cyanogenmod. As this does not have HTC Sense or bloatware I immediately got a significant amount of free space that handles all that I load.
One thing with Cyanogenmod 7.1, some people like myself will have freezing issues if you have less than 130 MB of free space on the phone. This is not a problem for me as I have more than that available. I chose Cyanogoenmod ROM over MIUI ROM as Cyanogenmod allows for 4G. Take a look though at all of the ROMs out there and decide for yourself.
I find that everything is running faster now and I no longer have the Bloat that Sprint put on the phone. You can also move more apps over to the SD Card freeing up more internal memory.
Apps like Flash and Adobe Reader can be downloaded from the Market and are updated just like any other app.

Uhh, no to ROM Manager. It's known to cause problems.
The Terminal is an app. You use it on your phone.
AS for system settings, only a very few can be successfully moved from ROM to ROM. The only thing I backup is my Alarms. You don't have to do them one at a time, you know. Hit Menu, Batch and then you can do them en masse
Depending on how many apps you load on your phone you may want to re-partition your SD card if you have the space and create a 1-2 gig ext2 or ext3 partition to use for apps2sd. The main reason I rooted my EVO was because I constantly kept running out of space on my phone. I'm an app addict though and have been known to have up to 200+ apps on my phone before I re-flash it with another rom. With a 1.5 gig partition and apps2d, I have never run out of space for apps on my phone though If you do decide to re-partition your SD card you will need to completely backup your SD card to your PC first as it will wipe all data on the card. I have a 16 gig class 10card in my EVO and the speed is pretty good.
i would give energy sensation a go, i was using that rom as my daily it is really staple, great battery life and improves the video recording to 1080p HD as well as plenty of other little tweaks here and there....I am running ics-decks-pre-alpha7 which i am really liking only thing is you would have to be willing to give up your camera til a stable alpha or beta is released. I have been running the Sprint Updated 2.0 Final for a few weeks (see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=20631581 ). I also re-partition my SD card with 1.5Gb (if I remember well). So far everything is good except:
1) I have 99Mb free on the phone. I think the main reason is that I disinstall some of the Sprint Bloatware and haven't reinstall all the apps. However I started having problems when I had 60Mb available before the upgrade to this new ROM. So I am afraid that I am getting close :-/
2) Wifi Tether has problems. I am experience the problem here: http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/issues/detail?id=1288 .
The workaround with Barnacle alleviate the problem but beside being annoying that I have to start Bernacle first and then the Wi-Fi tether, it sometimes stop working (I think it is when I I use the 4G and the 4g connection is lost) and I have to go though the cycle again :-/

Im on Mikg v3.0 w. Less freedom kernel and its extremely stable smooth and complete im not sure if it has 4g (im on metro so only got 3g) i do reflash like crazy but this ROM has me pretty satisfied i havent flashed in a while u might lose a thing or two but nothing u cant live w. Out.

If u want AOSP evo-deck-(gingerbread 2.3.7) only takes up 13mb of internal on initial boot 19mb after flashing gapps and its really stable too u might have to fix gps but thats the only issue i ran into (which is just a flashable zip if you do have to) and you can move the majority of apps to sd like CM it has a allow move to external option.

i had xperia x10 which lags too much due to short of ram then i shifted to desire hd as its have large ram but still it lags esp during games
i have almost 870 mb free internal memory and almost 380 free mb ram then why its lagging ?
Which games are you playing? And which ROM are you on?
Many CPU intensive games nowdays are built for multi-core CPU's and since our DHD is only a single core device it has some performance issues..
I think it depend on type of game you play and type of rom you use. If you use official rom of DHD and play some games built for, there's no lags.

i am using official rom android ver 2.2 and games like racing moto. temple run infect in temple run when i close the game my phone is just like dying i have to restart it again
Why are you using Android 2.2 froyo? You have to upgrade your rom to 2.3.x gingerbread. I think with this you'll have a better RAM management and be able to play easily game like racing moto. It's my opinion.

coz my phone belongs to united arab emirates region and for uae htc didnt release ota update when i mannually check for update it says your phone is uptodate. my phone is also not rooted as i am not advanced user and dont have knowledge of rom etc thatswhy not able to update through root etc
Aïe Aïe!! Sorry for you. I think you have to root your DHD and flash some custom roms to benefit for all your phone can do. Go and see the topics for that.

Well, our desire hd isn't that bad now that it won't run temple run, in fact it can play lots of games much more heavier much more efficiently.but you really need to root your phone first. Just go to android development section and read the sticky threads..
( before doing that, I would suggest you reset your phone once and install games and apps again and see..., the lag might be due to corrupt files too.....)

problem resolved .. basically it was task killer which was killing the games i have added all games to ignore list after that its run fine.
about rooting. i have tried z4 and visionary for temp root both gave successful message at the end but when i checked my phone it was not rooted.. however for permanent root the procedure is very difficult for me as i am not a advanced user all the procedures gone over my head so i decided not to take risk.. if you have any easy one click root method then please share with me.

Well good your problem got resolved, congrats .. And given your situation, you being a girl, well the only thing that you would be doing after rooting is flashing newer and fancy roms some with bugs and some with less bugs, and I don't quite see a girl doing that on her phone all the time, girls got lots of other stuff to care for.. So my advice, stay away from rooting as long as you don't really run into some functional problem with official Rom which is very less likely, so switch on your Desire HD, click Temple run, and start Running and enjoy your cell

I have question regarding my HTC Desire Z .. Ever since I rooted the phone about 1.5 years ago, and have been trying out the newer ROMs, I've slowly realized that my phone is getting slower, slower, and slower .. I'm currently using a Jellybean ROM, and its *extremely* slow ! I mean, at times I receive a call, and the ringer rings about 5-6 times, and during all this time, the phone doesn't have the juice to switch to the phone app, so that I can 'accept' the call ! Ultimately the call disconnects itself!
A friend recently suggested to me that maybe the newer ROMs are two powerful for my phone, and that I need to move to an older Android version ROM, which my Desire Z CAN handle, without this much lag !
Also, I hardly have any apps installed on my phone at all, in an attempt to keep the load low .. I also use 'Advance Task Killer' regularly to kill background apps, but it doesn't really improve anything ..
What can I do to improve the speed of my phone !? I really pisses me off to see a 10-15 second lag when I call someone !
Get rid of the task killer first of all...

Task Killer is not the issue, as I only installed it the other day .. The condition was same before as well ..

I dont think it will make any difference .. I've tried many different ROMs, and its always the same condition with all ... Sometimes my phone become *so* unresponsive that I just feel like smashing it on the ground ! (When I really get upset!)
Also, on another note, when I open Advanced Task Killer, it shows me the amount of free RAM on the top .. Most of the times this value is between 60 MB ~ 100 MB, and sometimes between 100 MB ~ 140 MB .. If never seen this value go above 135 MB or so ... And Desire Z is supposed to have 512 MB of RAM

If I do that, it will initially be fast .. Even if I install all my apps on the first day, it will still be okay in terms of speed ... But give it a week, it eventually becomes slow .. very slow! .. And the odd thing is, during this week, I don't necessary install/uninstall anything .. the phone just ****s itself in somehow ... And then from then on, it remains slow, no matter what ...
I open Google Maps, takes like 15 seconds to open .. takes another 60 seconds to go to Google Navigation, and then further lags after that ..
Basically there's a lag in *everything* !
Is there a way I can see what is slowing down the phone ?!
Also, is it true or not whether an older phone, such as Desire Z, can or cannot handle a relatively newer Android version ROM ? Maybe this is why the latest Android versions are NOT officially available for phones many times, because the manufacturer knows the device cannot handle that newer Android version ?
If your rom supports ext partitions, make sure all of yours are formatted that way. Chances are you have sopme bad apps, a logcat may hedlp determin abused wake locks or memory leaks. Also you can try downloading battery batt stats or watchdog for more infor

i had a play with elitemod ics the other day & it was defiantly slower than the GB version... it was using more or less double the ram which i suspect is the real problem.....
Yes its true the newer versions are more hungry. We touched on it in one of the andromadus threads recently. I believe the issue to be the cpu. The nexus s has the same amount of ram as us and although its not as good on there as the gnex, its still good. Having bumped my lower cpu limit a notch, its much better. I also tried a few upper limits and found that 1200 to be best as it suffers with animation under that.
But then all dz's are different. Stay on your rom and bump up the lower limits a few clicks and let us know what you think.

I've noticed the slowdowns happening with negligible CPU load and no memory constraints. I suspect a problem with the kernel. At the times it happens, the phone seems to be just doing *nothing*.

Is there any other thing I can try apart from logcat ? I installed Watchdog a few hours ago, but so far it hasn't reported anything out of the way ..
What does have ext partitions do ? How does that speed up the OS ?
Also, I'm probably going to be re-flashing another ROM soon, so please suggest me a ROM ... I'm looking for maximum longterm stability and responsiveness here, so even if a ROM isn't the newest or the most feature-filled, I can still try it out ..
And what is Superwipe (read it in another thread) ?
Normally, when I restore stuff after installing a ROM, I download a fresh copy of the app from the Store, and only restore the app's data using titanium .. is this okay ?
For the sake of starting fresh, flash the ext 4 recovery and flash mimicry as your rom. Read all suggestions in the first few post on mimicry, to flash 4ext I made a thread, you'll find it the first page or so in the general section (dzhboot or something)
Mimicry is one of the best made best performing full featured ics roms for our phones, partitioning everything to 4ext (easily done through recovery) will make it far better. Other bonus tweaks will be added in.
There (in my opinion) are beter performing gingerbread roms, but I do sugest mimicry as it is amazing and the dev has laid out a wealth of knowledge in the first few posts

Well this is the ROM I'm currently using, which I flashed about 2 months ago, which is giving me all these performance issues ..
I went through the first few pages, but I didn't find any instructions on 4EXT ... The only thing I found was in the OP's FAQ in the start, which said that you should apply ext by downloading 4ext from Play Store, if you get lags ..
Anywhere else I can look ?
Look in general section, somewhere in the first page I posted a thread called dzhboot on g2 or something to that extent, one of the first few posts I eplain how to flash 4ext recovery.
One of the fastest roms I have used is elitemod cm7, maybe try that

I have been wondering the same as the OP. I have been using andromadus and andromadus mimicry roms for the past few month. I tired cm9 unofficial but it was no different to mimicry in terms of lag. Currently on flinny's jb beta http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2005136. Lag is not terrible but too often I am looking at a white screen waiting for something to happen.
I often experience lags opening apps like phone and browser (any browser). Phone hanging when trying to make a call is particularly annoying because my wife asks "why is your phone so ****?"
I would love to have a really smooth experience like others report but even with a fresh wipe I seem to have trouble. When I try to reduce the process limit i still seem to have too many processes running. What should i look for in logcat in terms of tracking down the problem?
Maybe 4ext will sort it out? I am very loathe to go back to a cm7 rom.
Ext4 worked really well for me to speed up my phone.. I highly recommend it.

It's gotta be a certain app your installing thats hogging all your memory, I been running mimicry ever since blk released it n have had very few slowdowns.
Never had a problem receiving/making calls 'wiping' is not the same as 'superwiping' its different then just the name, I suggest you do some reading up before flashing any more roms.

i superwipe, and i've been flashing roms since the g1. I am not seeing any particular process hogging resources. this current jb beta is pretty good but still get some lagging at random.
if that were the case I would love to try and find out what it is.
it seems to me that a minority of users report lags in rom threads and are dismissed without ever really getting to the root of the problem.
I would really like to try and get to the bottom of it. I am going to move to ext4 but if there are other troubleshooting steps to take I am all ears.
Ext4 alone will make a huge difference, and most of the rest of the slow downs will be do to apps/running services which can be seen with a logcat what is continually trying to use cpu resources
If only a minority report slowdowns then either that minority has a different idea of how the phone should run/ they use the phone in a completley different way/ or have different settings and apps then most have.

I have the original KF and it's rooted to use CM10 rom. However, a lot of the apps are crashing / FCing frequently and I'm not sure if it's my KF dying or just the rom is too bloated. For example, when I use Chrome browser and use Tunein or Live365, the latter would crash a lot. Even in Chrome, the keyboard would sometime not respond or won't even display when I want to type something into the address bar. I tried Maxthon and it would complain about low memory even if it's the only app running.
I tried the following roms:
HellFire JB
CM10.1 / SGT7
SmoothRom (keep saying my apps can't be installed)
All of them are exhibiting the same problems. When I use EX Task Manager and close programs, only 150MB of memory is available afterward. So should I just give up and downgrade back to ICS?
Downgrade to ICS?...well if you hate having a somewhat decent battery life I would say that would be good lol. Seriously though....the issue with Chrome and the keyboard has been experienced by many users. In your process of wiping ROMs, have you ever wiped the SD card partition to clear everything out?
If you want more memory you might want to go back to GB because compared to JB and ICS, it is far more lightweight.
Yep. I did wipe the SD card and Android Secure last 2 times when I install the ROMs. I'll double check GB roms and see what are still available. There is really no point in battery life if the apps keep crashing, it's as good as a flash light at this point.

Best flashlight I ever saw! Lol.......by the way, how many apps do you actually have installed? Maybe tweaking the OOM settings would help?
In TWA_priv's ROM if you go to developer options and go top the bottom and find the apps section. Try unchecking kill background processes, and keep background activities set to 6. This MIGHT help, seemed to help with the chrome issue. That plus a full wipe

From my own experience, I had an extremely laggy KF running cm10. I did a full wipe and am running twa's cm10.1 and its a world of a difference.
Here's what I did to help speed:
Full wipe (cache/dalvik/system)
Delete unused folders on sdcard
Flash twa_priv's cm10.1 & newest GApps
SetCPU to max OC
Install only necessary apps (I have ~60 apps total)
Keep as few apps open at a time
Both of the cm10.1 ROMS (twa's and hashcodes) are running very smoothly. Granted the KF is extremely limited by its RAM, try clean installing one of those ROMS and it may breathe new life into your KF! :good:
Hi guys, recently my gnex has become laggy. I don't know what the proper reason is. I have tried different roms and on all it's the same. After flashing a new rom once I use it for a few hours it becomes laggy. I have installed Facebook home (patched ). I have uninstalled it thinking it might be the reason and still the same. Any suggestion guys?

I have had this happen to my Galaxy Nexus couple of times, especially since the 4.2.2 update last December.
I know this might be a harsh solution and does take up a lot of time, especially if you have a relatively filled up sdcard (mine is usually around 6-8 gb), and requires using adb, but the best option/solution I found for this is to backup the entire contents of my SD Card to PC, wipe /sdcard, then restore all /sdcard contents.
Meanwhile, I also wipe /system and /data, transfer new ROM/Gapps/Kernel to phone and start with a clean set-up.
In terms of ROM, you can give ATOM a go (xda link in my signature). v12 for magure teamed with AK70 is blazing fast for me.
One thing I avoid doing is filling up my sdcard with music, as it seems as my sdcard gets filled it really slows down the phone.
Again, this is something that works for me, so it is worth a try if no better option is presented to you. As always, don't forget to back-up everything off-line before wiping anything. Best of luck!

Possible solution
Try using apps like Greenify which will makes some of the useless or unwanted apps hibernate for more free ram. Use sdmaid, it'll remove the junk and duplicate files from your phone.
You can also try scripts like v6 supercharger for better ram management and Crossbreeder mod for more entropy.
Try using xenonhd rom 8.0 with ak kernel.
My phone is buttery smooth, fast and stable.
