[Q] Overheating at Low Temps? Won't Boot - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've found a ton of info regarding Evo 4g's rebooting due to heat, but none similar to my situation. My phone will shutdown at relatively low temps (39C or so) and will not boot until I cool it with a fan or by placing it over an AC vent. It will shutdown and the battery LED will blink green.
This happens when underclocked and when running at stock frequencies - and more often when the ambient temperature is high. Weird, because the phone barely feels warm to the touch...friend's phones feel much hotter, but do not have this issue.
HW003 refurb
Evo Deck 1.3
Savaged Zen 2.2.1 BFS SBC
Happens with other roms/kernels as well. I've had the phone since March, but this behavior started only a couple of weeks ago. Ideas?

You have the thermal sensor calibration bug. It's a known issue. Take your phone to a Sprint service center, corporate or independent, doesn't matter. Check it in for "DEVICE KNOWN ISSUE: thermal sensor calibration". They should verify the issues by running Neocore "interactive mode" with ALL the radios on and plugged into a charger. If you have any problems with getting it exchanged let me know.

Thank you!
Unfortunately, I bought my phone on eBay, so I guess I'll just use it until it dies. Thanks for pinpointing my issue though.

Correct, and if he doesn't have coverage this also allows him to add it.

Outstanding. Thank you both so much.
I'm certainly willing to pay $30 for repair as I love my phone and I've put a lot of time into it. Perhaps Sprint can fix my twitchy touchscreen as well.

I had the same issue except mine rebooted at 37 degrees celsius. I did not have insurance with sprint and I bought it at radio shack. Sprint replaced it for free with a reburb. I'm super happy though. Not one issue with the phone. My bad phone was hardware version 3. New phone is version 4. Pretty sure that is a big part of it. Also, my old phone rebooted after 4 minutes on the neocore test and it needs to reboot in less than 30 for a new phone. Sprint and htc know there is an issue and replacing for free with or without insurance.

My phone is also hw003. I would really like it repaired vs replaced due to the amount of time I've spent configuring the phone.
As long as I keep it cool, it runs great. The phone won't shutdown at 38C so long as I use it lightly, e.g. no games, flashing, or use in high ambient temp rooms or outdoors.
In addition, de-selecting certain options have reduced/eliminated the screen wig-outs; surface dithering off, rotation off, Setcpu uninstalled.

Repair is beyond the skill level of pretty much anybody. It requires componant level replacement. You are talking surface mount micro soldering which is generally done by robots. You may find someplace that could repair the phone but at a cost of a few new Evo's it's no where near reasonable.

I printed out the above and took it to the sprint store with me. Came back an hour after dropping my phone off and it was approved for replacement at no charge, phone is over 1 year old and I have no replacement plan or ins. Epics keep failing

Hello everyone. Before i get started let me just say this isnt a rant just a please help me post. Here is my situation:
My wife and i have been with sprint for 4 months now. Every month since we started our agreement with sprint we have had to have both our epics replaced so that makes a total of 8 epics that have come into our house hold. I have always been nice (never raised voice or cursed at) to the reps in the store and over the phone. How many replacements do i need before sprint switches us to a different model phone.
My wife and i need reliable phones as i am a paramedic and use phone at work and my wife is a stay at home mom with our cellphones being only form of communication. I have been googling for sprints policy and have come up with nothing. Thanks for any help.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA Premium App
What exactly is failing?
To correct you, this is a rant.
You didn't ask a real question. Sprint makes next to no loss replacing your phone if you're under TEP insurance. They'll keep on replacing the phone with refurbished phones until:
A. They find a reason to charge you for the replacement
B. You ask to change phones, likely at a cost
C. The Epic is discontinued (not likely soon)
Refurbished isn't bad, but it's not new.
Moreso, you claim to have already found this answer yourself nearly 3 weeks ago:
MedicStuder said:
According to my local corp store, if i replace my phone 2 more times (already done 3 exchanges) then i will be able to switch to different device which if i have to exchange this epic 2 more times i am jumping ship to htc and if evo 3d is out then i am going to it.

Furthermore, without already being an HTC user, you clearly don't realize it is plagued with many similar problems, although without you mentioning a single problem, I can't compare it for you. However, only 4 months into a contract, Sprint will NOT be giving you a free replacement to the Evo, especially not the Evo 3D. You will be paying a premium to switch phones, and likely be forced into another 2 year extension on your plan.
Now, if you'd like to actually use this forum for what it's for, please, tell us what's so wrong with your phones that you have replaced 6 of them?
Double post.
My guess he is an EVO user just trying to stir up the Epic forums.
I brought my phone back last weekend because it died. It was the 3rd Epic that I had taken back from the beginning of my contract. I told them that I would like to switch to a different phone but they werent willing to do that. They said that if all 3 problems would have been within 6 months of one another then the manager could issue a different model of phone. Since my last brick wasn't within 6 months of the previous 2, they weren't willing to replace. So I believe that is their policy.
Very strange... I've been on the same Epic for nearly a year.. Must be a lot of duds out there or some are just very hard on a phone.
To the trolls that post I am not an evo user. Yes I did make that post to help someone that asked. I was told in store 5 phones in 6 months and on the phone I was told 3 phones. That's what is confusing me. Also research also instead of stalking me the evo at full retail is the same if not less then the epic. I am not even looking at the evo 3d because I know I will have to pay a significant difference.
The problems I am having for those that have posted and showed a willingness to help me. What happened is (happens on my epic and my wifes): apps started to force close then the touch screen stops working then the phone goes into a boot loop that I can't fix. I am on stock and not rooted. This is the first epic I haven't rooted. I am just confused from getting different stories. The phones have never had any external damage.

Try not installing anything. I noticed one app I had in the market boot looped my epic. I reported it but nothing has fixed the app (locoroco) it would cause my phone to over heat running in back ground killing the battery then killed on board memory sure to heat. Sprint tech helped me through this.

Epic button fail
I don't have the insurance but I do have a defective phone. I'm outraged that Sprint is holding me up for $35.00 to exchange my phone for a working-somebody-else's-rejected/returned-faulty refurbished unit. Why should I pay extra because their phone (back button no longer works) --less than six months old- is defective?
I've looked through several forums trying to find someone who has a user fix to restore use of my "back" button to no avail...tried the "enable haptic feedback to 3/4" suggestion and it worked once, but never again.
$35.00 for this aggravation? Why?

The phone has a 1 year warranty from the manufacturer. Mail it back into Samsung and you'll get it fixed or replaced in about 10 days. If you need it back the same day/next day you have to have Sprint's insurance or pay them for the service.
I'm not a huge fan of Sprint or Samsung for that matter, but business is business and it seems fair enough to me.

Overheating

Just wondering if anyone else has run into this. I tried searching but couldn't find anything that matched what I'm seeing here.
This normally only happens when I'm using navigation, but if my phone gets up to a battery temp of 105 F it reboots. And not just occasionally, it happens every single time it gets up to 105 F. I thought it was just a defective battery so I replaced the original with an extended battery...same problem.
Has anyone else run into this? Is it a defect of the phone or something?
The reason I'm asking is because this is a refurbished Dinc that Verizon sent me to replace my original. I never had this problem on my original Dinc. Unfortunately I rooted the replacement before noticing this issue, otherwise I would send it back to Verizon. Not really sure how well the unrooting process works.
Anyway, any tips or info on this would be appreciated.
Thanks
Huh, that's rather odd. I've had mine up to 118.4°f with no problems. I honestly don't know it would reboot at only 105°... Hopefully someone else can help out?
EDIT: Mines AMOLED, had it since day one, if that matters.
Sent from my Droid Incredible running CM7.0.3.
I bought a brand new re-certified DInc off bendoverbay and it would reboot at 100F. It was an Amoled version. I came to the conclusion it was probably a bad CPU and may have been that way since original manufacture and the re-cert process doesn't know this is an issue.
Anyway, I don't think there is anything you can do to fix it. I returned it. So unroot and return.
My original AMOLED Incredible started doing that after about 6 months. It got progressively worse over the next 2 months to where it'd reboot when it got near 90 degrees. I took it in and showed them and I got a recertified AMOLED phone that now works up to 117 (highest I've seen on it). They did have to wipe my phone before they believed me though. Nontheless, I got a phone that works now. So RUU that thing and take it back.
Thanks for the responses.
I think I'm going to go ahead and upgrade to the Incredible 2 or the Thunderbolt. The phone I have now is the 3rd refurbished phone Verizon sent me. Maybe it's time to move on from the Dinc.
Thanks.
i've been getting a lot of over heat shut downs lately but i think its just cause of the rom im running combined with plants vs zombies. i do have an extendended battery too and a new snugger case so im curious that maybe there isn't enough venting with the case
Just for general overheating issues, a silicone/TPU case will insulate the phone causing its temps to stay higher. So I would go with the thinnest case possible, or none, if you're overheating. Also, undervolt and/or underclock. 800mhz without thermal shutdown is faster than 1ghz if it always resets.
I ended up taking mine in because it did the same exact thing. It would hit 105 exactly and then bootloop till it cooled itself down. My replacement one got up to 130 the other day running Pandora and sitting in the sun poolside
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA Premium App
An easy way to tell if the bootloop is temp related is to put it in the fridge for a few minutes. It should come out of the bootloop and be stable till the temp rises again.

Menu randomly popping up

Road trip yesterday, using telenav app for GPS on my E4GT and noticed when cell signal was low, the menu button seemed to go crazy and phone was unresponsive. Searched here, but it doesn't seem to happen to everyone.
Is it hardware related? Should I get new phone? Does it happen with ICS?

This happens to me when signal is low, my thought process is that if it's searching for signal, the cpu is prioritizing that rather than keeping track of the menu button.
Was your battery life terrible, by chance?
I have the telenav app too - I haven't really used it much, I usually use the Google navigation.
However, right after the update, on first boot, Telenav appeared and said "updating" and hung - I had to battery pull, which made me nervous about Telenav on ICS.
And, my first day, I got about 6-7 hours LESS battery life than I had previously.
I'm strongly leaning towards simply uninstalling it.
Barry life great, 10-15 hours on EL29 rooted, CWM. thinking about rooted ff18 w CWM, but love good battery life. I use it all day for work.
Freaking menu spaz is driving me crazy. I'll get rid of it if its a normal problem in low signal areas.
It did it without using telenav as well. Heck, its doing it right now. Very frustrating.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
Its a problem with the screen itself. I had that but it would happen regardless of battery life.
Just ask them to replace the screen/fix the screen.
Took it to sprint store today, they wanted to know if I had rooted it, said they would have to factory reset it. then if the problem continued, I could come back. Left the store, walked around a nearby big box store and it started again. Went right back, they said a replacement phone would be here in five to six days. Forgot to ask if I could have one in a box there. No charge, just got the phone two weeks ago.
Tech did mention that lots of people were bringing in the E4GT to have the ICS upgrade removed because it wasn't working as good as the GB.

I went a couple of days ago and was told that I was the second person to arrive that morning mentioning an issue with the newest update causing issues. I had 3 problems going on with my phone but this was the main issue. I had unrooted the phone and reset everything before I walked in so I wouldn't have them go through the trouble of doing that and waste time. I told them I have tested many things: flashing roms, modems, even PRLs (I knew the tech, so I was open about these things). I've had this issue for well over a month now and I got used to it but wouldn't mind getting it removed. I have done my own experiments and none seem to resolve it.
Their internal forums don't know what exactly is the cause of this "phantom menu press" but they are aware of the new ICS causing it. Their 2 solutions was either replacing the screen or a new phone. Although I was happy about a new phone (my phone has seen the concrete a couple times), I was hoping to see a fix at that moment.
Next time you go to the store, ask them to have the screen replaced. It could be that it is a faulty screen (sensor wise). I work for an engineering company and it is unbelievable how many new parts arrive faulty or with intermittent problems from the manufacturer.

Charging Paused. Battery Temp Too High??

I've been getting this a lot lately and it's EXTREMELY annoying.
I'm running FreeGS3 v2.0.0 with various themes and mods. Now, I've noticed that it only happens when he battery percentage is around 70%-85%. I can charge it fine from 0% to that range, then the message pesters me like crazy.
And the worst part, is that if you don't acknowledge the message (like when I'm sleeping) the screen will stay on.
Seriously, I haven't seen my phone on 100% for days because of this.
I also check my battery temp using WiFi tether app and it's only around 40° C.
Please help!

Have you ran an aosp based rom at all? I would try I bet that issue stops. Or try flashing a kernel with fast charge. Just throwing out some ideas.
Also may not be the best solution but you can disable that. In the feature.xml file in /system/csc/ find the line that reads. " block charge at high temperature"/>true</
you know the rest...
I've seen a lot of this at work with the S2... and a majority of the time there is corrosion in the charging port between a couple of the usb pins. Very hard to see without a score though.
Admittedly I've not seen it on the S3 at all and just assumed Samsung had gotten rid of the pop-up.

Ill be damned. Seeing that as a feature that could be disabled kind of surprised me so cant say im too shocked thats its being overridden somewhere else
Only thing I can think off that maybe the issue occurs when the internal resistance of the battery hits a certain range it happens.. it changes as it takes a charge, getting higher near completion.
That's odd that it still happens after you turned that feature off..

It is a known issue to Samsung as well as Sprint.
Sprint has no clue how this has come about or how to correct it or anything.
I personally have noticed that it does not come back when dropping down to a GB Rom. So I am guessing it has something to do with voltages and such in ICS and JB roms.
After contacting Samsung, I received this
Dear *******.
Thank you for your inquiry. We understand your phone shows an error charging Paused Voltage too High issue. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you.
We are unable to speculate when/if a software revision with this feature might be available due to the fact that this might lead to inaccurate information and confusion.
Most issues like this may be resolved with minimal troubleshooting. As an initial troubleshooting step, you may try to do a soft reset by removing the battery at the back of the phone for 30 seconds. Once you restart the phone, navigate the phone and check if the same problem exist. You may also try to use a different genuine battery and charger for the handset to isolate the issue. If you don't have an extra battery or charger for the phone, you may try to drop by at a local service provider near you to help you isolate the issue on the device. Once troubleshooting has been done to the point of actual failure, we can setup a repair on the handset, should it be determined the problem cannot be resolved over the phone. We can repair the phone, if it is still under warranty and has not been physically damaged.
At your earliest convenience, please call Samsung Customer Support by phone at our toll free number 1-888-987-4357, between the hours of 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Saturday, Central Standard Time.
Our repair facility will have the phone roughly 5-7 days from the time that it is received. Some dealer locations may offer a loaner phone program while your handset is in repair. While Samsung cannot control the availability of these products or programs in your area, please contact your local provider or dealer if you are in need of a phone, to find out if they are a participating member of this program. If you have any questions regarding this process, please ask the Service Representative at the time of your call.
We appreciate your continued interest in Samsung products.
Sincerely,
Mark

90% of the device I end up having to replace do not have corrosion or liquid damage on the charge ports or pins, so that type of reason is disproved in most cases.
Anyone who has had this issue knows the troubleshooting tips provided are bs and do not help whatsoever.
Basically put... if you have TEP Insurance take the phone in to Sprint and have it replaced. If you do not have insurace take the phone in to Sprint and have them replace it for $35.

It is a known issue to Samsung as well as Sprint.
Sprint has no clue how this has come about or how to correct it or anything.

Keep calm and FLABAM!

faulty nexus?

i ordered a verizon nexus off ebay for a decent price. physically it looked great but the battery life has been pretty bad. overnight i can get it down to 3% an hour discharge just sitting there, but when i actually use it i'm lucky to get an hour and a half screen on time. and that's using an underclocked kernal.
also, it seems that no matter what rom or kernal i use i get a freeze once a day where i have to pull the battery. not an SOD but the screen is on and frozen and the phone is totally unresponsive. stock or custom rom, stock or custom kernal.
did i get hosed with this phone?
PS i ordered a new samsung battery just in case but it didn't help
We need more information. Sound like user error?

how in the world did you come to that conclusion? and what other information would you like? this isn't even close to my first android phone
ok more info.. LTE off. bluetooth off. wifi off. screen on auto (i know the auto isnt' the best but i need to be able to see the screen when i'm out in the sun) couple of phone calls, couple of texts. checked FB a few times. if i'm using the phone for 5 minutes i can watch the battery go down 2 ticks.
also some times when i wake the phone up it lags like mad until i turn off the screen and turn it back on. raised the minimum CPU speed but it still does it. also the phone does go into deep sleep and doesn't seem to wake itself often
ok my phone just froze in recovery too. something is not right here
My guess is main board. My first GNex had little flaws that I thought were just software/New technology problems - NFC tags were often hard to register, reboots at random, power button taking a few tries to activate from time to time, device freezing at odd times. Then one day it just wouldn't turn on. Still under warranty, got it replaced, and now realize how defective it was.

i guess since i'm not the original owner i'm probably out of luck. guess i'll contact the seller and see what happens
i think i kno whats causing the lag ! i cant really say but battery life ! to get rid of the lag install this app https://play.google.com/store/apps/...wsMSwxLDMsImNvbS5rb3ZpdC5wLmZvcmV2ZXJnb25lIl0.
let it fill ur sd card and when its about 90% or so done ! stop the filling and do "release free space" then reboot bout 3-4 times ! ur lag should be gone !
it worked for me , cant really say it'll work for u ! but give it a shot
edit- DO NOT USE THE PHONE (no sms, calls NOTHING) while this procedure is going on, or else itll freeze and get stuck on bootanimation (at times ) ! and prevent it from going to sleep ! do 10 min for screen timeout in display settings !
That's one of the most ridiculous things I've ever heard.
Someone else try it! lol

Can attest to the app "Forever Gone" doing its job. :good:
well it looks like its a moot point anyway. i bought this phone so i could go prepaid when i left my job but verizon is ridiculous with their plans. they won't let me put the nexus on a prepaid plan , but they'll let me get 300 mb of data for 80 bucks a month! bunch of thieves. i guess i'm gonna get a nexus 4 and tmobile prepaid
I feel ya man, this is probably my last Verizon phone, bought it off contract too so I can leave anytime B)
Verizon's 3G has gone to hell in many places, like Sprint-speed, I mean 4G my record is about 33 Mbps down, but I live in an "Extended 4G Coverage Area", A.K.A. no 4G and barely any 3G, where I'm lucky to pull 200 kbps down...
T-Mobile doesn't have this problem, and I don't need the exclusive Verizon coverage anymore... Looks like I made up my mind lol, no I'll be here for a while.

That doesn't matter. The warranty goes with the phone, not the owner. As long as its under warranty they will replace it.
