RUU ROMs? - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

ive got a rooted branded(vodafone UK) desire
is it possible for me to flash with the lastest nonbranded RUU ROM which would be 2.3 when it gets uploaded or is does it have to be a more complexed way to debrand it?

Goldcard will be needed most likely.

Why don't you just flash the RUU for your phone and get the OTA update from vodafone

vodafone will take to long to release the update. they like to change it then release it to their customers....

there's no difference anyway, still the same android and HBOOT etc.. and still the old sense, using the vodafone RUU is just easier.

Unrooting Orange HTC Desire to a Generic ROM

Hello All
I am a newbie to Android. I have an Orange UK HTC Desire. I rooted it and installed ClockworkMod recovery, plus LollyRom (0.2 version) for Froyo and App2SD.
Now I want to revert it back to original ROM in light of upcoming update for European Desires. Please tell me:
1) Is there a way to unroot my phone back to a GENERIC ROM rather than the Orange version?
2) What is the easiest method for that? And do I need a goldcard (I rooted using Unrevoked so did not need one). Please note that my phone was not locked as such, just displayed Orange splash screen and some (horrible) Orange apps
3) If I unroot it and install a generic ROM, will it be detected as a generic Euro unrooted Desire (so that it can be updated)?
Urgent help would be appreciated

I believe if the rumors and gossip is true that Euro will get updated by this weekend then you need to unroot to HTC_europe version in the official ROM that is available in the sticky post.
I am also pretty sure when HTC rolled the update, it will also be made available everywhere too as long as it is official ROM version. So yes, you will get the update.
Thanks very much.
I just need to know: will I need a goldcard or something to unroot? I did not require it at the time of rooting.
Secondly there seem to be two versions of the generic Euro ROM - which to choose?
Seeing as you're on orange, unless your phone is unlocked, you'll need the 1.15. The 1.21 one updates the radio as well and causes a sim lock on orange phones.
Yes you will need a gold card to flash a generic rom. Imo, the generic rom is much better than the orange one with all the demo games and stuff. If you struggle making a goldcard, google goldcardtool - makes the job easy. Just a few mouse clicks and its done. Simple

I'm on mac os x, can someone link me to/ extract the rom.zip for
RUU_Bravo_HTC_Europe_1.15.405.3_Radio_32.30.00.28U _4.05.00.11_release_121865.exe
??
ps. what is the difference between
RUU_Bravo_HTC_Europe_1.15.405.1_Radio_32.30.00.28U _4.05.00.11_release_121684.exe
RUU_Bravo_HTC_Europe_1.15.405.3_Radio_32.30.00.28U _4.05.00.11_release_121865.exe
iinga: Many thanks for the reply. Please bear with me the repetitive questions though:
1) You say I am on Orange. I WAS when I bought the phone, but I am using a different SIM now (in another country) and its working perfectly without unlocking etc. After rooting and installing LollyRom all traces of Orange have vanished from my phone. Does it still mean I have to be picky with generic ROMs?
2) I did not need a gold card to root it and install another Froyo ROM. Is it confirmed that I will need a gold card to unroot it back?
1) What network are you now on? I know that orange are very picky with radio updates. Despite rooting/debranding, updating the radio would mean that they simlock their phone. However, as you mentioned you are on another network, I believe that you may have an unlocked phone?
Also, as the froyo update requires a new radio, it may well be worth your while to unlock regardless...I originally unlocked mine (despite being on orange network) to update to froyo roms with the necessary radio update.
2) Yes, you will still need a goldcard to install a generic rom.
I had Orange UK ROM. I've unlocked it with a code. Then I made a goldcard and installed
RUU_Bravo_HTC_Europe_1.15.405.3_Radio_32.30.00.28U _4.05.00.11_release_121865.exe
Everything works fine but one thing. Red color is rather orange than red and is too saturated ie. faces of my friends are very reddish. I hope Froyo resolve this.
Just a quick point the Rom coming out this weekend is for unbranded and unlocked phones only not Orange or vodaphone or t mobile just unbranded and unlocked HTC desire.

I think that after unlocking and actualizing to official ROM my HTC is the same as brand new unlocked Desire. I don't suppose that OTA checks IMEI numbers and knows which phone was unlocked phone from begining.
Iinga: actually I am in a third world country having imported orange branded desire. I did update the radio before updating to a Froyo Rom . The phone is working perfectly with a local 2.5 g sim from day one and continued to work perfectly after rooting and updating . So far as I am concerned my phone IS unlocked despite initial orange branding. So I think transition to a generic HTC euro Rom will be possible . Am I correct ?
Secondly I didn't need a gold card for rooting and installing a custom Rom and it worked so it shows my phone is not network locked. So why do i need it to revert to a generic Rom ? Sorry for repetition again and thanks for the help

Ok, i guess you are unlocked.
From my understanding, if your phone was originally flashed with an orange rom, you will need a goldcard. You only don't need a goldcard if your phone was originally unbranded.
Rooting is a different process
Ok I guess now everything is clear . Just to confirm: using the goldcard I will be able to turn my currently rooted phone into a generic euro phone right ? Now the only question is which ruu to use of the given two.
since your phone is unlocked, use 1.21, it's the last official update for unbranded phones:
http://shipped-roms.com/shipped/Bra...00.28U_4.06.00.02_2_release_126984_signed.exe
So this will revert me to generic euro? What about those ruus labeled euro or something like that ?
RUU_Bravo_HTC_WWE_1.21.405.2_Radio_32.36.00.28U_4. 06.00.02_2_release_126984_signed.exe from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=695667
Use that one as you're unlocked. And yes it will revert you to official stock rom.
So what if your IMEI isn't in the 'database'?
Yes, an OTA has sim-locked the phone. Yes, I am on Orange. Yes, I went to htccode.com.
No, my IMEI is NOT in the database (it's three months old!). Will be chasing for a refund from htccode so let's see what happens.
What next? I could flash the earlier ROM again, but I want the Froyo upgrade to work. I did try to go to Orange for the unlock code but, despite being an Orange-branded phone, I bought it through Phones4U. Apparently I have to go to them for the code. Sounds suss to me, but will be popping to the shop today to ask.
SavCom
I've just been to htcunlock.com. Paid my dues, got my phone back and we're now running Froyo properly as of an hour ago.
Off to htccode.com to get my money back
I have a Desire that had the Orange rom on it, I debranded it with a goldcard to the generic 1.15 rom, then i did the OTA update to 1.21.405 which also updated the Hboot to 0.8 and the updated radio and simlocked the phone so I bought an unlock code and all was good.
Next I rooted the phone using the modaco r6 rooted 1.15 rom, used a few rooted roms then decided I would unroot to get the official froyo update. To do this I used the 1.21.405 zip from shipped roms, put it on the sd card (gold card) named as PB99IMG, booted to recovery and selected fastboot, this is the only way to get back if you have the 0.8 hboot. That took me back to generic unrooted so yesterday I was prompted to install the 2.2 update. I didn't install it as the new hboot sounds like a nightmare. Instead I rooted again using unrevoked 3 and installed a rooted version of the official 2.2 rom, I didn't use a goldcard for this.
Hope this helps.

I have a debranded orange phone, used a goldcard to debrand to a generic 1.21 ROM, since then I have upgraded to the new froyo 2.2 official and ever since my phone is on a continuous loop of restarting all the time every 2mins, no SD card, No WIFI and no GSM calls etc.
I've tred various RUU's and updates and nothing has worked. Im thinking maybe I need an Orange RUU file, but just can't find one anywhere...
I tried using 1.21.405 zip, renamed to PB99IMG then went through recovery mode and fastboot, but when fast boot was selected nothing happened just another menu with - reset, bootloader, clear data etc nothing to say install anything?

Which ROM?

I'm a UK Desire user on o2. My phone is branded with a splash screen upon start-up.I want to Froyo update but o2 suck and haven't released it yet.
I'm considering de-branding my phone using the GoldCard method and installing a non o2 ROM so I can get the Froyo update. Problem is I don't know which ROM to go for. I don't want to choose the wrong one and end up with no signal or something.
Also once I flash to an unbranded ROM, will I get the froyo update OTA or will I have to do this manually?
Cheers,
Ed.
Try installing one of the WWE ones from here.
You should then get the OTA update (I think).

[Q] help updating to froyo from wwe rom

Hi guys
recently had trouble updating my european unrooted unbranded desire to 2.2, ph got stuck in a boot cycle, only way i could fix it was to flash the ruu wwe 1.21. but now obviously the ota update wont show on phone. My question is will there be a ota update for this version? Or do i/can i flash to europe ruu to get update, without gold card as my phone is unbranded? or will there likely be a froyo ruu sometime soon?
thx
Hi! Have the same problem! Unbranded my Desire with a Gold card to flash official WWE. Then got the OTA 2.2 via mobile internet. Phone stuck in a boot process (endless reboots). I flashed back to WWE 1.21.405.2_T2 now getting no notifications about possible updates. Is there any way to install official 2.2? Please Help!
Install a rooted 2.2...
There are plenty to choose from, some are official just rooted.
Does that mean I have to root my phone or cab I just download rooted Rom and install it
Problem solved!
I copied update image of froyo 2.2 to my "Goldcard" and flashed from it successfully!

install latest oficial rom

hi. i just bought a desire hd second hand and it is rooted and has leo revloution hd 2.2.1.
how can i install the latest oficial rom? please give me a small guide.
the phone was bought from orange but it was not network locked or branded.
is this the latest rom?
"RUU_Ace_HTC_WWE_1.32.405.6_Radio_12.28b.60.140e_26.03.02.26_M_release_155891_signed"
Click the link in my sig, head to RUUs and download the orange uk 1.84 that's the latest official orange firmware.h
is it branded? how do i install it?
Yes its orange branded, hence its the official orange RUU.
Download it an run the exe file. You will need to install HTC Sync, if you have not already done so.
but i dont want an orange branded. i want a wwe rom. because the phone was bought from orange but it was not branded or locked. i bought it contract free.
so.....can anyone tell me so i can install it?
my phone is not branded at all.......what official rom i need to install and how?
Download the other 1.32 WWE RUU that's the latest for Europe. If its the latest software the I'd flash Android Revolution as its current as 1.84.
i now have android revolition hd 2.0.11 by mike1986 with built 1.72.
but many apps are missing such as maps, talk, latitude......etc....why is that?
and the cpu says that max speed 1228.8mhz :O. i thought desire hd has only 1ghz cpu.
LeeDroid is a custom ROM, it has been customized from the latest sources. The latest LeeDroid is based on the 1.84 release. It has been overclocked too. Surely when you bought the phone the seller should of made you aware that it wasn't standard.
As your current ROM has been rooted, it allows you to remove any app, including system ones.
You can either flash an official HTC RUU or flash a new custom ROM. Its your phone so the choice is yours.
tell me how can i flash an official rom? just run the ruu.exe and that's it? i can install any ruu directly?
just download HTC Sync from HTC's website first, and install that. Then just run the exe file from the RUU. Then just follow the onscreen prompts. Easy as peas.
even if my phone is rooted and now has a custom rom?
Yeah, the RUU will remove everything, and restore it to factory settings.
wwe 1.32. what android version it is?
Its Android 2.2
damn. what about that orange uk 1.84? is it 2.2.1?
what are the branding problems? all the icons are orange? or is just the startup screen?
isn't it any unbranded official 2.2.1 or 2.3?
What's the problem with custom ROMs? They are pretty much always better than stock. Just wait until ARHD 3.5 comes out this weekend, flash it and be happy.
Yes the 1.84 is 2.2.1
The ROM is basically the same, however its carrier branded to Orange UK. If your handset has had Radio S-OFF applied it shouldn't SIM lock it to Orange.
No there is not an official European 1.84 RUU.
The offical 2.3 is due sometime this month, if sources are to believed. However there is a leaked HTC 2.3 ROM, that is not an RUU and must be flashed with ClockworkMod Recovery which I think you would have. Just turn off your phone and plug it in, recovery should start on its own.

People should not just go and flash leaks, that is very dangerous business. If somebody wants to try a leaked ROM, he or she should go for a custom ROM that has been built on the leak.
By the way, only custom ROMs are flashed in recovery. The leak is PD98IMG.zip, which has to be flashed in bootloader itself.
I may have fully conveyed my point, the custom ROMs based on that leak, are still leaks. Otherwise I would of said flash the PD98IMG, by saying "flash with recovery" I though it would be obvious it wasn't the PD98IMG.
However, I see the ambiguity in my post and understand your point, for that I apologise.

[Q] Flashing Asian firmware in a European version or vice versa

Hi I would like to know if there would be a problem if I flash the official rue of an Asian desire z with a european version or vice versa?
I bought my phone second hand and I decided to flash the 1.34.707.1 version into my originally 1.72 desire z. Now my phone cannot find updates. It keeps telling me that there is no update even if check manually.
I know that I can flash a higher version by downloading a higher rue version but what I wanted to find out if I can no longer receive ota updates because of what I did.
Since when I was in 1.72 my phone did not notify me of the 1.82 update too...
I don't know what's wrong.. Please help. Thank you.
I think if you are SuperCID and S-Off, it would work. Otherwise, it won't let you flash the ROM from another region.
Also, if you flash an official ROM, you will lose root, and you can't get it back on any ROM version higher than 1.34. For this reason, if you downgraded to 1.34 for purposes of rooting, you don't want the OTA updates, anyway.
If you're rooted and S-Off, and you want a more updated ROM version, just flash the Virtuous custom ROM. Its mostly stock 1.85, but rooted, and with a few cool added features and some optimizations.
Hi, the thing is I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to rooting. I read the posts here specifically in the wii section and I don't think I have the skills to pull it off and risk bricking my phone.
I think my phone is not rooted or it was before but not anymore, since as mentioned I flashed an official ruu.
So basically, I should still be able to receive OTA's from HTC right? I was wondering why my phone keeps telling me there's no update when the software number is 1.34 stock and not rooted. Shouldn't it notify me that there's an update at least regardless of whether I want to or not?
If you are not rooted, why did you downgrade to 1.34?
I also don't understand why you want to flash the RUU from a different region. If you aren't SuperCID and S-Off it won't work. Why not just flash the latest official RUU for your phone versions/region if you want to be updated and don't care about root?
I'm not sure why your OTA's don't work. I'm still on 1.34 (well, back to it), and I still get notifications to update.

@redpoint73
I bought the phone from a friend of mine. I noticed that it had eng hboot and had s-off.
I have zero knowledge about rooting. When the gingerbread test rom for the desire z came out, I flashed the pc10img.zip via the bootloader, however since it was very buggy and laggy, I decided to flash stock desire z rom.
Having no knowledge about rooting I read some of the threads in this forum and learned that flashing an official rom i.e. the RUU would be the easiest way to return back to stock.
It worked, I am using stock rom. I experimented and found out that I can flash any of the RUU, so I chose any of the WWE release. I decided to flash an older firmware version specifically, the 1.34.707.1.
Now the problem is my phone doesn't prompt me with an update, even after checking in about phone > check for update.
I still have s-off but eng hboot is gone. To clarify I was not the one who rooted the phone, so I have no idea what to do.
Is it possible that the previous owner tweaked something in the phone that would absolutely prevent it from receiving OTA?
I am just worried since I have a feeling that the gingerbread OTA will be released in a few weeks since the update for the Desire HD is already out.
Please help and thank you again. I extremely as a NOOB!

I wouldn't worry about getting the official Gingerbread ROM OTA. It will probably be posted here or at shipped-roms.com long before you would get it OTA.
