CPU swap - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Can we desolder the CPU from the evo 3D and put it on the Evo 4G? Any expert know how many leads are in each processor?

cough wow! lmao! NO YOU CAN'T "SOLDER" a processor onto your evo. lmao! plus, what would be the point? if we could build our own phones. well... that would be great. It's micro for a reason. now you can put a 3d screen in for the evo. and it would work. however, then the software wouldn't work.

Well you could provided you have a very steady hand, are skilled in soldering surface mount components, and the tools to do so. In this case you couldn't because the CPU footprints are entirely different.

I can't speak on whether it's technically compatible. I do think it's probably soldered by robots in the factory. Your fine motor control probably isn't good enough.

I don't think our phones would even acknowledge the processor if it is even swappable. Even if it could wouldn't it be hindered by the rest of the hardware?
OC your current one to 1.2 and you'll get exactly what you think you might get swapping for 110% less headache and money. 1.2 on these phones is stable and then some.

What the hell? It's like asking can I put the engine from lambo into a fiesta. Would not work... Facepalm...

[Q] Replace Snapdragon processor??

Is it possible to replace the Snapdragon processor in the Incredible with a Dual-Core chip?? This topic is far too advanced for me, but I am curious. I love my incredible so much, that I would rather update it's components before tossing it aside for some new piece of hardware.
Thanks in advance.
I would like to say anything is possible. But I'm going to respond with a simple no. Its a little more involved than just swapping. And even if you could, the cost would not even make it worthwhile.

Hit the nail on the head there.
Could you do it if you were extremely tech savvy and were on some kind of hell-bent mission to preserve your phone? Possibly. But the bottom line answer is pretty much no.
It would cost as much as a dual-core phone.

I'm guessing you've built/upgraded a desktop processor or even a laptop processor before. It's nowhere near as easy.
You'd have to unsolder, find a qualcomm processor (you can't just buy one of newegg), write drivers that work with the rest of the phone, solder the new processor in, and cross your fingers.
It would probably cost more than two Evo 3Ds off contract

Yeah.... I'd estimate that effort requiring as much skill, equipment, schooling, and patience as a doctor specializing in separating conjoined twins at the skull. I'd be amazed if the pin-out was similar looking, much less the same. In the end you'd probably end up with something as chunky as my dInc with my massive 3500mAh battery installed... but with only the stock battery.

No, when it comes to actually building anything tech wise, the most I have done is add RAM. I have done plenty of mods on cars/motors, just not on gadgets. I was hoping that the concept would be the same. Maybe, solder here, grind there, and voila...done.

Well Its Official Our Phone is a piece of crap now that Evo 3d Duel Core is out...

Well now that the Evo 3d duel core phone is out today our phone is no longer the top dog... Now it is a piece of crap.... and sprint wont give me an upgrade until november! how dare they! So now i must be stuck trading between epics and evo 4g's every week! We need a support group... we can tell ourselves that our phone is great but lets face it no duel core and no duel cams either and no internal 4gb of internal ram,,,,, i need phoneagra from the makers of viagra.,...
It may not be the top current phone, but it is not a piece of crap. These kind of whining has got to stop among the mass public in the world. Everyone always complaining about their phones going "out of style" when new phones hit the market. Everyone always want to rush-buy the new phones, but always fail to realize that those phones will also be "out of style" when more phones hit the market. EVO 3D will be all the rave, but 6 months later...(next year?)..maybe sooner... EVO 3D will be considered "piece of crap" along with past phones. My gawd, the Epic is still a great phone. Stay with it for a few years, for sure I will. If you're rich, fine, keep getting new phones, who cares.
Epic are not a piece of crap. Period.

Are you gonna be able to do anything with the evo 3d that you don't do with the epic? NOOO. So why spend more money if you will only be able to do the same things you are now. My definition of a pos is having a samsung instinct when this epic was first released and some would prolly say hey that was still a nice phone and it was but the amount of new features that I got with this epic was astronomical. That sir is when you get new phones. Besides their will be no apps and te development will be really slow on that for a long time. So me ill wait a couple of years till everyone has the dualcores figured out really well.

Now if you're referring to Sprint only offerings. That's not much to brag about. LMAO
In the rest of the phone world, epic lost it's crown soon after Tegra 2 phones were released.
Don't believe me? on the technical side, go look at the benchmarks. On the real world side, goto Radio Shack/Best Buy and play with those phones side by side to the your Epic.

Really... this OP smells of e-peenor contest and is pretty moot.
Answer me this, does your Epic get you laid by the simple fact of you showing it to the tween girls and them melting all over you cuz you have an Epic phone?
If not, then your balls haven't dropped yet.
according to http://phandroid.com/2011/06/24/rumor-sprint-bringing-epic-4g-2-4g-galaxy-s-ii-in-q3/ the epic 4g 2 will be another piece of crap as it will be single core. As we know a flag ship phone must have the highest number of cores to date for the cell phone company.
souped up version of the original Epic. Inside will be a single-core 1.2Ghz processor and we’ll likely see Gingerbread. We’ll be on the lookout for a keyboard, of course, and the camera is said to be 8 megapixels instead of 5. But don’t expect too much more than that.

Well, I got my full upgrade back. Some questions about changing to the EVO 3D...

I have an HTC EVO 4G, I'm considering upgrading to the EVO 3D.
My local Sprint store has a deal that if you have a 2 year upgrade and you trade in your EVO 4G, you can get the EVO 3D for $50.00 dollars.
I'm considering trading my EVO 4G in. As you can guess, I'm rooted. Do I need to un-root prior to trying to turn in phone in? I've taken my phone in for service, rooted without hassle before for this is different.
Also I do NOT have my factory HTC battery. I upgraded and gave my original to a friend. Is this an issue as far as trading in?
Thanks!
I did not unroot my phone nor did I put the stock battery back in. All they did was look at the esn number that was on the phone and then threw it in a drawer. They won't look through it or anything so you have nothing to worry about.

You should do it if you think the evo 3d is worth the exchange. You can also wait it out and see what else they will come out with. Im pretty sure they will come out with something much faster and better.
I would at least wipe it so there's none of your information on it
I played with the 3D in the store and wasn't all that impressed coming from the Vibrant on T-Mobile so I snagged up the Evo 4G while I waited for a better dual core. So now I am getting the Motorola Photon 4G on the 30th and since I am new to Sprint and within 30 days I only have to shell out an extra 100.
What I am saying is that over all the Photon looks to be way better then the 3D. I did not care for the 3D at all and it looked very odd. Also for me and my eyes I could see the layer that is over the screen when I moved the phone around and that was enough to turn me away. Also I really wanted one feature that really killed and that is Wiimote/other controllers and TV out at the same time. The Evo 4G and 3D wont have that since HTC has an odd BT stack that doesn't want to pair with a Wiimote and yes Cyanogen does but then you loos HDMI out so your still SOL. The Photon will do all that out of the box.
The other thing that looks really compelling with the Photon is the webtop. I see this replacing my PC for internet browsing and stuff. I don't play any PC games anymore and what games I do play are all on my phone so it is a win win win for me.
So consider the Photon before jumping on the 3D, it just might be a better match for you.
Photon better than the 3d? You are obviously joking. O....wait I think u are actually being serious.

Sent from my PG86100 using XDA Premium App
Also keep in mind u will probably never be able to run anything custom on the photon, yet the EVO 3d is weeks if not days away from being fully rooted. Then all this negative crap will go away when they see what the phone can really do.

Over all the only upside to the 3D is the 3D and it is not that great I played with it for 10 min in the store and it just seemed a little odd just like the 3DS.
for the CPU the Tegra2 beats the MSM8660 in benchmarks and real life speed tests. Games are created for the Tegra2 that don't run on other CPU's because they cannot handle the texture size. 16gb storage built into Photon and none on the 3D. Webtop, true HDMI mirroring, and correct BT stack for Photon and a docking station with USB device support.
But I'm not turning this into a war of devices, I was simply informing the OP that there are other choices out there as he kinda sounded a bit unsure of the move.
Yes u can,the b/l comes unlock.on the photon, I just don't like the kickstand.
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA Premium App
You're right I won't turn this into a war if devices but to say the only upside is the 3d would just be incorrect. Any person could look at the specs of the two side by side and easily be able to point out many superior features in the EVO.

Especially because technology moves at such a quick rate, it's insane. New phones are being released, announced, or leaked almost every week. Besides, there's usually not too much of a significant change for many months at a time. Yeah, one phone has 1.2GHz instead of 1.0GHz, but would you really notice? And I mean really, truly notice? Not "Of course, the benchmark scores are higher", I mean "Wow, this game runs much better!".
I just bought an Evo 4G on a new contract last month, even though everyone told me that I should wait (or should have waited) for the Evo 3D. I'm very happy with my purchase, and after seeing both my boss' and my roommate's 3D's, I can honestly say that I don't regret it. Yeah, Sense 3.0 is awesome, but once root hits the 4G, I can even have that if I want.
No confirmation from Moto that they will be unlocking the Photon's bootloader. They have stated specifically that it will ship with bootloader, recovery and kernal locked as usual. Other than that it looks pretty good. Not my cup of tea, but the Galaxy S II should be here in about a month as well. If you're really patient, then most of the speculation I've read says that quad core phones will be shipping by Christmas. Personally I'll be sticking with my Evo 4G for now. 3D seems like a gimmick, no root for the Photon and, well, the GalaxyS II is a Samsung.

Did you ever watch Star Trek The Next Generation when it was out? The idea of computers the size of a book was a futuristic idea. It was an idea that was considered 300 years in the future. Now we have tablets that are even more advanced than those in the show.
The military is now testing invisible armor
Purdue is testing nano-technology for cloaking devices
MIT is working on a tractor beam using light technology
We have cell phones that are more powerful than the computers used to power the space shuttle to the moon circa 1969
Even the play station 3 has the computing power of super computers from 1997.
Technology improves at incredible rates. I would be shocked if we don't have see through and flexible tablets inside of 10 years and maybe even 5.

...maybe samsung's next phone will be designed by boeing...>,>
While the commercial seems to be an exaggeration it will most definitely be commercial produced within the next 5-10 years.
Invisible internals? While I'm sure they can minimize the visibility of such things what I think most likely to happen is there will be a 'hand grip' or such where all of the unhideables will be hidden...mostly the battery. The motherboards for these devices is already insanely tiny and only 1 or 2 more process shrinks and super-integration of all of the disparate circuits could reduce the entire motherboard to a chip the size of an SD card.
The flexible invisible screen already exists...and it's AMOLED.
The battery is going to be the hard part...though perhaps we're not thinking 'out of the box' enough IRT batteries. I know there is lots of work going on in the polymer-battery area...flexible, semi-flexible or formless liquid batteries? Who knows....but...we will see it.
This is no flying car...these are consumer electronics. These megalith companies have a vested interest in making the stuff they just sold you yesterday completely obsolete by today to take more of your money tomorrow. That's their incentive. That's why Apple will sit on a phone for a year...they also make money on the back-end in the app store. Samsung makes money on the hardware, that's why there's so much of it.
I see nothing compelling of current gen, next gen or even rumored next-next gen Androids/smart phones. My phone is pretty damn fast and thin and has a huge screen...aside from radio upgrades, storage upgrades and processor upgrades...which we really don't need yet, we are way ahead in that department....I want something as amazing as a flexible see through phone. Going from a Lotus to a Moment was amazing, going from the Hero to the Evo4G was amazing....Going from the Evo to Evo3D was, umm, incremental? Slightly? Evo3g-NS4G to ET4g? It was cool, it is the superior phone for certain, but...amazing? Not anymore.
Bring on the transparent holographic liquid-polymer see-through battery invisible electronic 4D 5G LTE-A² ultra-phones. I'm getting bored, lol.

I saw a preview some where online that a japaneese company has a thin plastic film stuff that did just what this describes in this video. I totally beleive it. Ovbiously the internals arnt see through but the diaplay could be. It was shocking when i saw the preview demo a year or so ago
Edit- it was slightly like the videos posted in page one. I posted beford i read it all to see if there were videos
Honestly, some people here have no imagination. The internals, for example, don't need to be see through, they just have to be smaller and clustered to a certain edge of the device and be covered by something black so it looks like a design. The rest can be clear. Done!
You guys need to balance out some logic with imagination, you will then see how close these things are to actually being in production.

New phone

I'm sure a good sum of you on this forum have been thinking about an upgrade for your Inc (I know I have). I always seem to find one flaw in the new phones that cause me to want to keep the phone I have now. I'm thinking about getting a Droid Inc 4G when they release it. What do you think is the best phone to choose? Is that a good choice? Is there something better I should be waiting for?
Thanks!
Sent from my ADR6300 using xda premium
Bud, I'm sure you're gonna hear 50 opnions of yes or no, it really depends on what's important to you in a phone and what you do with it. I'm not a Developer, or chip, IT knowitall, so I can't give clockspeeds and processor criteria to you, no doubt some others can but for me and what I have educated myself with, the new INC 4G will be just the ticket for me.
Getting this s4 I think Krait processor, which is a big upgrade over what most phones out currently have, though some out might be bigger or faster but not many. Removable battery, sd card, 4G, ICS, and a nice size 4".
If you looking for a bigger phone, some other options out there might be more worthwhile for you. I think the new screen is QHD which is not quite 720P if I understand it correctly but a deffinite improvement over my amoled INC
That's what I was thinking too. As long as the screen looks good to me, I'm okay with it. I wont be super picky about the exact resolution and I'm assuming lower resolutions mean less battery draw. Could someone shed some light on that? Thanks in advance! Also, will we be able to S-off the new Inc?

The thing that concerns me most, is developer support. It's not going a "flagship" phone. It doesn't have a huge HD screen. Therefore, people are not going to be lining up in the streets for it. As far as I am concerned, that is just fine with me. But, I am always out on fringe...
I just wonder how much developers will be working with it. That is very important... at least to me.

I'm thinking about getting it also because I have a upgrade available. I'm going to wait at least a couple weeks after it's released and see what kind of dev support it gets before I make a decision.

Hopefully it'll have a great community like we do now.

I'm gonna be suprised if it doesn't. A lot of those guys usually have at least 2 phones in their signature, so they might have the nexus or the rezound but I maybe they have gf's or wives that need a new phone and they use that as an excuse to get new hardware and start developing for it

Lookingat the spec for this, will the CPU be underclocked from 1.7 to 1.2? Or have a rating of 1.2?

I think you meant "underclocked from 1.5." The "standard" S4 has a clock speed of 1.5GHz. So, yes, it does seem that it is underclocked. We obviously wont know for sure until it is released though.

We've also been talking about it in a few other threads (like this one) for a few weeks now, but I just left some thoughts in yours...
All in all, the Incredible 4G will be a great phone. In fact, as long as you're cool with a 4" screen, it will be the best phone on Verizon (for a little while at least).
I'm still holding out hope that they call it the Incredible 3, not "4G"
