Gorilla glass is not unbreakable. Its harder to break then normal glass. Defy is shock proof up to a limit. If your phone falls exactly on the glass there is a big possibility that it will break.

...not broken, but I managed to scratch it.
Bought and few days later, i've noticed very few little tinyhair scratches and 1 deep (a fingernail feel it) 2mm long. just in the middle.
I run with my phone in my pockets but i really take care of it (it was in a sock). I don't know how and what managed to scratch it, but now i have a Brando Screen Protector on it.
When i'll remove it, i'll try fix the scratches with the cerium-oxide polish-method.

that's happened to me too, just some little scratches by the way. However, is it safe to use a polish method?

I kept mine scratch free for a year until my girlfriend started playing with it.
Now I can't count how often it has fallen to the ground.

Okay.....so you broke the glass . What else ?
Herpderp iPad2.
No I don't care if you're anti-Apple.

Glass is hard but nobody told it's not fragile. Do not confuse the two concepts.

isn't it advertised as scratch proof??
I'm very careful with my mobiles ^^
& I was quite peeved after having owned my Defy for 6 weeks to find a scratch on the screen!?
I'm guessing it's happened when ph slipped out of pocket while driving car & slid down side of seat

Some are, some aren't, it's a strange thing :/
My defy+ has 2 scratches, very very small ones, while my brother's one has none, even though I take better care of mine. Both bought at the same time, 2 months ago. Strange thing

I'll say just this - SCREEN PROTECTOR ! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Screen_protector

Screen protector all the way
I used my Defy for 2-3 weeks without screen protectors and i got no scratches. I know i am heavy user i put a screen 3M Screen protector. My old HTC Diamond got so many scratches it was a pain to watch it and i really looked after it.
I knew as it had no resistant glass it will become like this. In the Defy i saw a major improvement.
But I can say money well spent with the screen protector. I ripped it off and scratched it badly. As it has a year and a month now i will change it. It lasts 1 year and for 10-15$ i can say it's money well spent.
So my advice: install a 3M, Invisible Shield etc. screen protector. The branded ones have a perfect fit and some technology invested in them. Also scratch resistant certification.

how exactly u broke it?
just to make sure i don't do it

price?
How much costs to u to replace the broken Gorilla glass with a new one?
Did u bought the glass from ebay?

So called Gorilla Glass

To clear rumors or to be very specific!
I took off my t-mobile screen protector yesterday and to day discovered a deep scratch on the "gorilla glass"...
To be very clean. Im very very verrrryy careful with my electronics and never damaged any in anyway! But its how how people say you can stratch it with keys or pens or put it in a bad with bolts and screws and the glass wont be scratched.
It false advertisement because i had my vibrant in an empty pocket fresh dry cleaned too! no dust and anything inside to cut it.
I had many average phones where i only got a tiny scratch on the screen from the phone falling from my hand after 2yrs of use and landing on concrete...
its funny how this glass gets scratched up very deeply without being dropped or scrapped at! and its a scratch for sure because when i move my thumb on it pressed i can feel the sharp line of the scratch on my thumb
Maybe there is a big misunderstanding, maybe only euro galaxy S phones have the gorilla glass... because this sure doesnt!
So for those who want to go naked!!! DOOOOOONT! buy a screen protector!
man... although a simple glass wont scratch with nothing in your pocket..
Maybe someone touched it when you didnt know, or something happened.
I've been using my vibrant for about three weeks now and have no scratches, only some marks on the battery cover.
The samsung vibrant does indeed have gorilla glass. Just because it has gorilla glass doesn't mean its un -scratchable. It just means it's more resistant than regular glass...if you don't mind me asking...what did you have in your pockets? A machete? A light saber?!...I kid, I kid...the morale of this story is, get a screen protector, prevent your vibrant from getting scathed by a light saber!

whether it has Gorilla glass or not, this is the FIRST phone that ended up with deep scratch only after a month of use.
I really dont care, i got it replaced and finally bought screen protector that i really like. (anti glare and anti fingerprint)
People should seriously invest into realook, it's only ten bucks and you won't even know it's on. But don't take my word for it or the other hundred posts here on xda that claim the same thing.

lol. this phone isn't fragile, you must have done something. no way the phone got scratched being in a pocket with nothing else in it. unless you walked that pocket into the corner of a desk or something...

+1 not a scratch.
Real Gorilla Glass takes alot to scratch. The ZuneHD is known to have the Gorilla Glass. My ZuneHD has been naked since the day I brought it and today it is still scratch free. It is possible our Samsung Vibrant does not have the Gorilla Glass as part of carrier modification to cu cost. who knows.
that sucks man, i would be pissed too.
but what did it get scratched on? must have had something in your pocket with it...?

Interesting post...I'm actually a screen protector freak and have ordered multiple brands of screen protectors for the Vibrant (actually even Galaxy S just to try it...) so I'm all FOR screen protectors...best one so far is from Korea.
About your scratch...unless there's a scratch fairy, there is SOMETHING that caused that scratch. It may be foreign to you because you may not have known when it happened...It's highly possible someone else without your knowledge was the cause of it. Scratches just don't appear out of thin air...
Bottom line...the glass on the Samsung is solid...very solid...I've dropped my phone before so I know first hand how durable the glass is...it's some tough $#!t....

Its just the way of the world. If you put a screen protector on, soon after you take it off your will get scratched.
If you put it in a case, soon after you take it off you'll drop your phone. Call it karma, or just dumb luck, but it always seems to happen this way

just to say this... like many people who were surprised by vibrant getting scratched so easily... Im on of them too! Because in theory if it has gorilla glass its suppose to be a lot tougher than average glass! I understand its not un-scratchable but it deff got scratched very easily being that i had nothing in my pockets! and that whenever it did recieve that scratch it wasnt from something really bad because i would of noticed it... since the phone is around me all the time!
So if any kind souls who believe this is a gorilla screen please demonstrate it for us on a video.... Take a key and scratch it the glass around and we'll see then....
I don't use a sp, but my phone still looks brand new.. No sp, no case, usually keep my phone in my pocket when walking around. Screen is still smooth a glass. Could samsung have used different materials depending on when it was built, kind of like the problem with the shortage if amoled screens?

I actually dropped my phone on one of those concrete roads in a way that send the phone sliding on the concrete several feet face down. All 4 corners of the phone's bezel show scratches but nothing on the screen itself.

I would never personally do this, and a 3 dollar screen protector to protect the integrity of a very sweet piece of equipment, is a very small price to pay.
I just find it hard to believe that with only cloth surrounding it it got scratched. Not even lint in your pocket? I call BS
LOL

Scratched Screen

I'm a bit disappointed in the gorilla glass used in my Defy. I've had the phone for a little over a month and haven't abused it, but last week I noticed a squiggly hairline crack about a 1/4 of an inch long and it has slowly gotten longer since I first noticed it. The day that it happened it was in my pocket with my keys and may have been subjected to some pressure, but nothing significant.
Since this is supposed to be a scratch-proof phone do you think there is any way I can get it replaced under warranty? I purchased it new from T-Mobile just over a month ago. Either way, I'm very disappointed that it scratched so easily.
I have read of a few instances where people where able to have their phones replaced due to the glass scratching as it is marketed as a scratch resistant phone.
It is scratch resistant, not scratch proof, nevermind crack.

Exactly right.
For the glass to have cracked, there must have been a fair amount of pressure applied to it and there's no way Motorola or anyone else is going to accept responsibility for that.
As for scratch resistance, I've taken a stanley knife to a Galaxy S (also has Gorilla glass) and there was minimal scratching, very difficult to tell it had been 'attacked'.
My GF managed to scratch her Defy within days of getting it. Just by keeping it in her handbag with all the usual girlie junk. It lives in a protective slip case now!

The treatment gorilla glass goes through in the manufacturing process makes it ever so slightly more prone to cracking/spiderwebbing if dropped. You can not have scratch proof AND shatter proof.
Sent from my MB525 using XDA App
Well you could, it's just that then the glass wouldn't be clear.
and wouldn't be called "glass".
I noticed a small scratch from being in my jean pocket. I think those sands particles that were used to sands blast the jeans scratched against the screen. Anyhow it was at d2 of the ownership so I just got exchanged for a neW phone. Lesson learned and now I have a screen protector plus phone case.

Htc Desire screen is Gorilla glass confirmed in gsmarena..

Firstly please check the link..
http://www.gsmarena.com/htc_desire-3077.php
so..as u can see our Desire's screen glass is Gorilla glass confirmed only by gsmarena and i also checked other sites but none of them contain this spec.
so i'm kinda confused regarding this, coz i dont want to use my phone with plastic screen which protector worn out within few days and have to change over and over again..
so what is ur xperience using Desire without any screen protector?
Just NO. Yep, sure it doesn't get scratched by keys and knives, but if you keep it in your pocket thin and sharp dust particles can be deadly. A friend of mine tried to go without a screen protector, and after a month or so there were a few light scratches...guess what happens if you go on like that for a year or so. Also, the first time you go to the seaside you're screwed: so happened to my gf with her brand new ipod touch, which now has a big nice smile in the middle of the screen...dust/sand particles are really dangerous, even for gorilla glass, believe me.
Firstly a screen protector wont 'wear out' within a few days, unless you have finger nails like edward scissorhands then itll last for months before needing to be changed.. ive had my cheap protector on for 3 months already and its still as good as new.. not bad whan it was something like a quid for 6.. and when i do come to change it I know theres still a pristine screen underneath.
Secondly even if it is so called gorilla glass its not immune to getting scratched, isnt it best to have an extra layer that can get scratched before the glass below it does?
You just have to look at the state of some iphones to realise gorilla glass isnt all its cracked up to be
Absolutely no scratches
My Desire was one of the first delivered last year - and until today there is absolutely no scratches on the glass. And I wear the phone with me every day, it has fallen into the dust etc., etc. The metal frame has scratches, the metal plate around the cover of the camera. But not the front glass. I'm really extremely happy with the glass quality.

You might have been lucky there..ever tried to look at it under a very strong light? Micro scratches aren't very likely to be seen in normal use.
I scrached it with sand so easy and once it felt on flor and got deep and wide scraches on glass and small bumps on metal. When screen is off I can see scraches easy.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
I confirm: absolutely no scratches. NO. Not big, not micro. None. Niente. Nada. Nirwana. Gar Nix. Rien du tout.
And if they aren't noticeable under normal light what does it matter
My 1st desire arrived the day after orange put them on sale, so it was one of the 1st. After 2 weeks of keeping it in my suit pocket the screen had some nice scratches on it (probably from a lighter). So I would say all ways have a protector on it, in my case a Zagg which went on my 2nd desire, 1st one got sent back as it was playing up later to be found out it was due to using some power saving app, least the replacement arrived with no scratches and the zagg went straight on.
Someone should do this to their Desire: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b2EYnUGUti0
Until then, I do not believe this has gorilla glass.

omg!!!! thats brutal!!!
thanks all for helping me to determine weather should i use my desire with or without screen protector....
so the bottom line is our desire actually doesn't have gorilla glass screen and it is not advised from most of u that not to use without screen protector...
Well, tbh i don't know wether it's gorilla glass or not...what i do know about that kind of glass is that it offers a good resistance when you try to break it, and it's overall more durable, otherwise it's like any kind of scratch resistant glass. This said, there's plenty of vids on youtube showing gorilla glass getting scratched (like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EimSyAIuDoI&feature=youtube_gdata_player), so why risking it, i'd say
I'm fairly certain its not Gorilla Glass since I've got a couple fairly big scratches through normal use.

Well it still means that it can be scratched: if it falls face down on gravel you can be quite sure you'll get something noticeable
Also, maybe tiny scratches won't annoy you, but for sure they will affect screen durability...i mean it could crack more easily you know.
Hey man, i don't wanna be a ****, i just wanna say that all of the superduper hax glass powered devices i had or stumbled across in my long phone nerd career got scratched sooner or later...but hey, at the end of the story it's your baby, not mine
Also its kind of pot luck wether you get a good qualitly screen protector.
I bought mine for like £2 for 6 and they show scratches after a week
whereas my friends ones, which were also bought from ebay for a similar price do not
show one scratch in months, and hes a bmx rider and his phone goes through alot
more than mine. All his friends with iphones have cracked screens so its stronger than
that at least. Ill always use a screen protector anyway, gorilla glass or not.
people...google it. here is a link. my desire has no scratches at all, and i hate screen protectors. i like my phone pure - without anything on it. all the best
I cannot post links, so go to the corning gorilla glass and see the products
the desire definitely does not have gorilla glass. it is very odd that corning who makes gorilla glass says that the desire does have it though that is incorrect as htc has said it does not. i had my desire without a case for a few weeks and it has 2 micro scratches that can only be seen when you shine a light on it while the screen is off. i hate the feel of screen protectors so i just have a plastic case for it and i haven't seen any new scratches on it for over a year.
er...just buy a case, no screen protectors needed. My Desire is 12 months old and not a mark on it. Case I use hardly adds any bulk whatsoever.

13 Days, already has a scratch on the screen

Hello everyone. I've had the Lumia 900 for only 13 days and thought I had taken relatively good care of it, yet it already has a scratch on the screen. I did not invest in a screen protector simply because I had heard such great things about Gorilla Glass and didn't deem it necessary. However, it is already there and AT&T's return policy states that they will not exchange it due to physical damage. What should I do? Contact Nokia and send it off for a glass covering? I'm not sure. If anyone takes something from this post, please invest in a screen protector.
Thanks for letting us know. I thought this had corning/gorilla glass, do you know how the scratch was caused? Definitely worriesome if it can be scratched easily..
My screen on my Lumia900 is just fine, but what I notice is the thin metal rim around the screen is dented in many places. Looks like the rim is made from a super malleable metal, it doesn't take much to put a dent in it. I've only dropped my phone out of my hands once onto a wooden table from maybe 4 inches off it, and that was it. Yet there are numerous little dents and pockmarks in the rim. Not too much an eyesore but it wigs out the OCD in me, haha.

I believe it is Corning Gorilla Glass, and I have not done anything drastic with the phone. It has yet to be dropped or anything. It just goes into the pocket, and that's it. The metal rim on mine seems to be holding up just fine.

I think they consider this scratch resistent, not scratch proof. You might want to ping Nokia and get their official response. I know with the Dell Venue Pro, they had a very specific canned response for such things.....and it was not in the customers favor. I can't imagine Nokia being any different.
I got two light scratches too. I was surprised that I got them within the first week. I never got a scratch on my HTC Incredible with 2 years of use (without a case or protector).
Damn! I've had mine since April 6th, dropped it on its face many times and no damage whatsoever. My 6 yr old even attacked it with toy utensils and it's still perfect. No screen protector yet, but have one arriving in the mail soon. But I have always been kind of lucky with these kinds of things.
But Corning Gorilla Glass has never been considered scratch proof, just scratch resistant. I always like to have a screen protector as soon as I can find one made specifically for my device.

My HD2 is more than 2 years old and has never worn a screen protector. Was always in my pocket dancing with the coins, keys and pens for 2 years.
Lumia #1 was in my pocket 2 days and I swapped it because of the purple hue issue. Service guy pointed out there was a scratch almost 1/2 inch long.
Lumia #2 was in my pocket 4 days then swapped today for the same issue. This time I checked for scratches myself and it had a couple little ones 1/16th" ish.
If this is what Gorilla Glass is then the HD2 must have had freaking Orangutan glass or something cause whatever glass they put on this Lumia isn't half as good.
Looking for the best screen protector to buy now.
I Think it's one of those weird things. My girlfriends HD2 got a scratch within a week of owning it a couple years back! So her HD2 must of had chimpanzee glass, lol. I put a screen protector on my HD2 at purchase, due to that. I think it's unexplainable, kind of like "Where do all the missing socks go?" lol.
Some people don't like screen protectors, but regardless, it's ALWAYS, the smart thing to do.

The HD2 is the beast of beasts when it comes to durability. Totally unfair to compare any other phone to that one...when it comes to durability. I still have mine...
i've seen it with iphone 4s too. Mine had 2 hairline scratches. Its actually not the actual scratch in the glass but a scratch in oleophobic layer. feel the scratch on your phone do u actually feel it or u just see it? My 4s had very very light ones that i was unable to feel but saw them at specific angles
Sorry to hear about this. I make an effort to keep my phone, left pocket, in there by itself. Maybe a receipt at the most. Right pocket holds all the 'dangerous' stuff like keys and change. Made that mistake with an old iPhone. Bought it off someone from Craigs, had it for 4 days and accidentally put keys in pocket where it was at for just a few minutes.. damage done.
I'm getting some Ghost Armor put on my 900 this weekend.

Glass is glass and it scratches despite all the marketing claims made by the company. If it was so amazing as they claim, there would be no reason for them to announce a "NEW IMPROVED even more sratch resistant...." version

Return phone for scratch on screen?!

Hi, I've had my phone for 2 weeks (replaced 3 times due to battery issues) and its got a hairline scratch going all the way across the screen! It's really annoying, I bought it from Vodafone UK and am considering replacing it since I'm locked into a 2 year contract. I've been so careful with my phone, I keep it in a pocket with nothing in and haven't dropped it so I have no idea how this "gorilla glass" has gotten scratched, also the back is marked from general use and I can see shiny sivery bits on the back casing.
What could I say for them to replace it? Like I say, I feel like scum for replacing it due to a scratch, but they're taking enough from me a month!
Thank you
Most carriers I know won't replace for scratched glass unless you got it that way.
Also the gorilla glass is scratch resistant not scratch proof. Generally things like sand can still scratch it quite nicely lol.
You could try asking them but I wouldn't get your hopes up to be honest

+1 to above.
The HTC One X screen is 8 MOHS
Sand = 9 MOHS, hense why sand scratches it.
I think coins/keys etc are like 6 MOHS

sand's a *****, a beach party ended my pristine screen. my hox got a couple of scratches, but luckily they are quite tiny so it doesn't bother a lot.
in your situation I don't think they will do jack **** about it... they will probably argue that it is your own fault. Only thing to do is prevent more scratching
First thing I do to a new phone is apply screen protector, cover and store original packaging. Helps resale value heaps

When I bought HOX I was all like "What's wrong with these fools buying overpriced screen protections on Gorilla Glass 2 ?!"
After over half of a year I've got only two, barely noticeable scratches so I don't think I need tape some sh*t over my display. My problem with Gorilla Glass is, that it's too hard. Normal display is more prone to scratch, but it's flexible, unlike Gorilla Glass. My HOX once slipped out of my hands and fell off stairs and since then I've got two small spots of splitted glass on sides (between the display and its frame). I hope these splits won't extend...

I wouldn't call 5 protectors for $2.00 overpriced. not unless your unemployed or a vagrant. if dropped a good cover minimizes the risks of the glass cracking/splitting.

There are also cheap screen protectors, I know, but I haven't found any of these in CZ. There are probably some on DealExtreme, though. BTW I don't think screen protector will save me from this small damage, because it's splitted like... from inside I'd sent you a photo, but best camera around atm is in my HOX
