[Q] Suggestion for making HTC Desire CDMA/GSM in seperate threads - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ever since I got this phone when it came out in the US I came on here and all I was seeing was GSM this and that. Now its even harder to find anything.
I used to work on phones with the help with the XDA forums. since last year I haven't found crap..well not much to get anywhere.
Just a suggestion.
I believe HTC Desire in the UK hit number one beating the iPhone so yes this phone is very popular and I really think there should be two threads for GSM Phones only and CDMA Phones only.
I spent hours on here and really didn't come up with anything that would help because by the time i finish reading it says for GSM phones only. URGH!!

I'm working on a CDMA Megathread, because it will hopefully bring in more development to our phones.

Thank you very much. I'm sure others will appreciate it as well.

So I'm assuming it's a no go?
I just want to root my phone. I'll keep reading more.

Nevermind I think I found what I need to read that you posted

[Q] CDMA Desire (US Cellular)

I just saw a video review of US Cellular's new CDMA version of the HTC Desire. No doubt the people who buy this phone will discover all sorts of information on this forum... info that could (I'd imagine) seriously harm their phone if they try to flash their CDMA Desire with a GSM Desire ROM!
Might it be appropriate to give this variant its own subforum? Or failing that, post some prominent warnings that the US Cellular HTC Desire is a significantly different piece of hardware?
I guess nobody with one of these has discovered the forum here yet?
(noob here). Can it really cause that much problems? I'm going to be picking up the Desire from Telus soon. Are you saying that I won't be able to use the current custom ROMS?

The Telus Desire is not CDMA - it's GSM/HSPA like all the others. Custom ROMs will work as long as they support the SLCD screen (some are written only for AMOLED screens).
I'm specifically talking about the US Cellular HTC Desire, which is the first CDMA version to be released.
And so it begins...

I have mine as well. Can we root with the guides using the desire from other carriers?

And has anyone who has gotten the new USC Desire, have you tried the current root method to see if it works. I have doubts that it will.

agree with the OP.
just like the sprint hero and the GSM hero.
need to be a subsection. like you said it could seriously damage the phones if they flash the wrong things. hope a mod creates a different section soon.
+1 on that. There's a lot of people out there who don't even know the different between GSM & CDMA.
Also, it would help for development in general (root and roms.)
I really think the mods should open seperate forums for Desire GSM and Desire CDMA, because as both phones use completely different radios, chances are it will wreck the phone if you put a GSM ROM on a CDMA phone.
Anyone know who any of the mods for the Desire forum are? I would just PM them but I'm not sure who they are.

[Q] Split BRAVOC and GSM SubForums

Dear Mods,
Can we get a split DESIRE CDMA and GSM subforum.
As I have painfully found out, flashing GSM rom versions to a CDMA desire is NOT PRETTY, LOL
I spent hours last night trying to get my device to a workable state before realizing in my haste that there are GSM and CDMA desires.
This is a humble request to split the forums for fear of others making the same silly errors I have made.
Thanks for listening guys.

Mods...? Anyone?
I see a lot of views and no responses.
Am I the only one that has this concern?
If I am, lol, its all good
You are not alone but this has been already suggested, and I'm not sure that it will be done :/
See this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=801301
And as AndroHero pointed out, it's not here that you should make this suggestion.
I agree also, we need separate sections for GSM and CDMA devices, it would be less confusing for people.
When the CDMA Desire came out, there were a lot of suggestions on the requests to admin forum here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=276306&page=113
Nothing ever came of it obviously but they seem to be a little more willing to add forums/subforums lately. It could be worth another push on that forum.

i think you may have more luck lf you just ask for a dedicated cdma android development section rather that a whole sub formum, desire general and q&a could remain both gsm and cdma
Desire GSM CDMA subforum
I don't know if this helps but as far as I know the US is the only country that runs CDMA. Therefore when I see a rom posted by someone from another country I then assume that it is a GSM rom and do not dl it.
you are incorrect sir,the asia pacific region has more cdma subscribers than the united states.
http://www.cdg.org/worldwide/index.asp
for the purposes of this forum however; your method works.

REQ: Nexus S 4G section

the phones will start shipping next weekend, id hope the mods will make a cdma section for it by then? id love for some type of development for roms, rooting and kernels to start.
i requested it a while back ago. all i got was we will think about adding it.. its a shame too, look at the nexus s forums there have been a fair amount of bricks due to people flashing the wrong model number odin tars... imagine if we add cdma to that.. sure wouldnt want a repeat of what happened with the HTC Hero (cdma and gsm)
there would be no reason for xda to NOT add this section. i agree we need to keep the roms & mods separate.
Is the phone really even that much different? Has anyone tried a normal Nexus S ROM on a Nexus S 4g?

How about the hardware to work with Sprint's WiMAX?
That's why they want the section to avoid this misconception of the two being the exact same device.
rom wise you might be able to boot, but i dunno about the kernel.. but the radios definitely will ruin someones day.. the i9020 firmwares already brick i9023's and many of teh other variants

agreed the cdma/wimax nexus will require different radios, roms & kernels.
I agree GSM/CDMA should not share the same thread. Noobs will be bricking their devices left and right. Besides, it sucks sifting through GSM/CDMA threads trying to find a compatible ROM/kernel.
This is a necessity - I'm considering a switch, probably won't, but if I did, I would be afraid to use xda without this seperate forum.
I have been reading up, considering the switch, have decided not to. While reading and not knowing which phone is which, 9020, 9023, nor what the new one is, I see the confusion and problems this is causing among current users. Throw a whole bunch of new users from Sprint in, and this will be a mess, it will cause more problems than solutions.
I have mine preodered for this weekend, and I agree - YES, there does need to be a CDMA section. Even back in the days of the HTC Vogue, Touch Pro, and Hero devices, there was always the risk of flashing the wrong ROM - keeping the development forums separate is a MUST!
This is a must indeed!
Just preordered my Nexus S at Best Buy... we need a Nexus S 4G section!
i plan on taking this epic i bought saturday back to get the nexus s 4g when its released
NS4G FORUM A MUST!!!!!!!!!
This has been debated in the NS forum many times. Their bigest worry is about the devs sticking together. I feel this is a mute point. the SNS and the NS4G are going to be two diffrent beasts with a common branding. MOst of the reason my have been stated already
Or the other option is to let the bricks start flying and lose the NS4G community all together.

well tbh it seems the devs do not want separate forums. i disagree as i won't flash anything until i know 100% it will work on my cdma nexus. i guess there is always android central or ppcgeeks.

disagree with what? my comment about the dev wanting to stick together? or the fact that it wont matter, because the NS4G will have seprate devs anyway?

Well, it is a different phone! Just like the HTC Vogue and HTC Touch were... if the ROMs were cross compatible, maybe it would make sense to not have two forums, but they AREN'T!

[Mod request]New forum for cdma WFS

There seems to be a lot of confusion going on between the gsm and cdma versions of the Wildfire S, and people are causing big problems for themselves by not reading(or cant read), plus its also a headache for other users trying to pick thru useless information to get what they need. Maybe a little to late, but is there anyway to split this forum up?
Good idea, was thinking of the same thing to do.
The forum can be split, I've done it on PHPBB3, I don't know whether it works on VBulletin (Isn't that what this forum uses? Correct me if i'm wrong.)
Thirded, would help stop stupid people (like myself) from bricking their phones by flashing the wrong ROM ;_;
I agree, this should be done. I too bricked my first wildfire s after trying to use the "stock roms" listed in the stickied thread at the top of this forum. Stuff in that post is kinda mixed, or mislabeled, or even unlabeled. I don't recall seeing anything about GSM only roms on the few I looked at, but there is a chance I did over look it.
but yes, Wildfire S CDMA thread split!!!!
Idea is gold. Already quasi-bricked one phone
Good idea, will save a lot of hassle and money, in some cases.
sounds like a plan!!!
This is a good idea, even more so bc it appears that a lot of people have jumped on the holiday deals for the Virgin mobile WFS. Please split this thread!

I'm one of those folks but at least I already own an Android tablet so rooting, etc. wasn't a new concept. But since I already lost 5 bucks (not very much I know) purchasing a case for the "other" Wildfire S instead of the Virgin Mobile one I think it's a great idea.
Related question: I searched but perhaps didn't use the correct magic combination of search terms. Is there a thread somewhere that explains the differences between the different versions of the phone? Things like size, location of ports that sort of thing so my case problem will never happen again?

The virgin mobile one is called A510c which is a CDMA phone. As you know, CDMA phones don't have a sim card slot. I'm not quite sure about the A510a version. A510b has a slower processor as compared to the A510e which has a 600MHz processor.
Hope this helped!

I agree with this tread.
In Favor
I would concur. Much like Hero and Hero CDMA or other variants. I tried to port the Euro version over to the CDMA side last night. No working touchscreen; which, sucks when it boots up to a lockscreen Anyway, the devices are quite different.

[Q] Incredible 2 on T-Mobile's GSM Network

Greetings,
I've spent all day on this so far and haven't come up with any definitive answers so I am posting here. Forgive me if these questions have been answered, I haven't found them yet.
History: I have a Verizon HTC Droid Incredible 2 that a friend gave me when she upgraded. As of this moment it does not have a SIM card, and there is a slot available for one. I called T-Mobile and a SIM card is on the way from them. I am opting for a pay-as-you-go solution because I really don't care about data, coverage for data is spotty in the rural area where I live and not worth the cost of a contract with a carrier like Verizon. I unlocked the phone today with an online service (gsmliberty.net) and it worked great. So I have an unlocked phone, Verizon's stock ROM, and a SIM card from T-Mobile on the way.
I want to use the phone for calls (of course) and to use wifi when it's available. I want to be able to use the phone as a music player, snapshot camera, and play audio books on it too.
Questions:
What is the best ROM for T-Mobile's pay-as-you-go GSM network for making calls?
It is my understanding from reading scads of forum posts that CDMA vs GSM is all about data speeds, is that correct?
Thank you ahead of time for any and all useful information.
I haven't used GSM yet but I would think that GSM would be slower considering you'll be runkjng the phone on a different carrier.

After searching this forum for hours yesterday I still had not seen the topic you sent me the link to. Thank you.

Thanks for the replies knipp. I agree, a sticky or pinning the topic would be a good thing. I almost volunteered to set up a post for that but need to realistically look at how much time I could devote to it first.
Thank you also for the additional link. I am keeping a pretty good record of what I am doing, so when it's all said and done I will post how I got my phone to work with T-Mobile and GSM to help other people with the same questions and issues.
