A man walks into a hamburger restaurant where he has bought a permanent seat (the universal). He sits down, picks up the menu and looks at the long selection of hamburgers(AKU 3.X ROMS) to order from. The waiter comes over and asks what he would like. The man looking around, looks through the swinging doors into the kitchen(Microsoft and HTC) and see the chefs cooking steaks(WM6). The man looks at the waiter and says “I’ll have a steak.”
The waiter replies “I am sorry sir, but this is a hamburger restaurant.”
“Then why are they making steaks?” he asks, pointing to the chefs in the kitchen.
“Ah, they are preparing for a new steak restaurant that we will be opening next door. They are simply trying to get the flavour right.” He says quiet proudly.
The man looks reflective for a moment then says “Alright, I’ll buy a steak. How much do you want for it? You can test the flavour on me.”
“Again, I am sorry sir , but the steaks are for only in-house chefs to try.” The waiter replies.
“Fine. Let me speak to your manager.”
“I am the waiter/manager, sir. And no matter how much you offer, we will not be selling those steaks here. I am sorry.”
The man then gets up and leaves the restaurant, goes around to the side door (XDA-forums) and knocks on it politely and explains to the chef that he would like to try a steak in the hamburger restaurant.
The chef tells the man “ Since you own the seat here in the restaurant, you can bring any food you would like and eat it at your table. I’ll give you a steak and you go back around and eat it inside.”
The man hearing this is overjoyed. “Thank you kind sir. I will give you any feedback on what I think about your steaks.”
The man then takes his steak, heads back into the hamburger restaurant and proceeds to eat it. The man thinks “Why didn’t he just sell me a steak? It would have been so much easier. Tell me a price.”
The manager seeing this knows where the steak came from and is quiet consternated. On one hand his new restaurant is not open and he would like some feedback about his steaks. Hell, he himself eats the steaks in this restaurant. On the other, he cannot sell steaks in this restaurant as most of the seats have been bought, plus few would want to spend the extra money on adding steak to the menu and it would take away business from the other restaurant. So, he lets the man eat his steak for now, knowing that one day soon he might have to lock the side door.
I suggest reading it twice. Once as a business man and again as a consumer.
Great Analysis ! ! !

i think that by far is the best 1st post i have seen!!! Its perfect! i think im gonna cry, lol j/k
This post accurately represents the daily dilemma that a board such as XDA Devs faces when trying to choose between just plainly serving the menu and trying to get their customers the best there is without getting on the wrong foot with companies such as HTC or Microsoft.
What I miss in this story though is the Chef threatening to sue the restaurant manager if he dares to serve steak outside the menu. I would also dare to say that when knocking on the XDA-Devs side door, it would not be the Chef (e.g. Microsoft) answering the door, but the sidekick that does the dishes

That just screams "Can i get an Apple with that iSteak". well sh!t, im probably going to get a letter from apple over that comment.
Guy 1: I'm getting sick of eating the same burger for over a year. I read from the news that there is a new cafe opening soon. It looks like a nice place, cozy & fancy. The apple pie sure looks delicious
Guy 2: Well, you know. This restaurant is also coming up with a new menu soon. It's a steak. I'll tell you what, I just got a sample from the chef. Wanna bite?
Guy 1: Sure!
Guy 2: So What do you think?
Guy 1: Uhmm...my..GOD...delicious. I prefer it well done, anyway, it's much better then the burger. If they tweak it a bit, I'm sold
GREAT !
Just a GREAT Post !
I'm all exhausted from laughing
Cheers

Actually, I was going to say "junior chef", however I do know major devs(none in the PPC market) who, for reasons of their own, give out "in-development software" for testing and feedback. These guys look at it as a free resource and a symbiotic relationship. They get what they want and you get to use the latest and greatest.
I wrote this article to show the legal grey area that the XDA-Forums operates in. It really is a tight rope act. One slip and its a long fall with no net.
You do provide invaluable services to the community as well as much needed feedback on PPC products to the companies that create them. But what do you think will happen when one of these companies' manager types gets the notion that you are hurting profits instead of creating them?
PS I see the waiter/manager as the managers of Microsoft/HTC with the chefs strictly being Devs.
Ok, You are all my friends here. I just got in after a 28 hour flight. If there is anyone familiar with the area, please shout out. I thought it was going to be OK, but I am just not liking the looks of this place. I know I am new to it, but I am kind of taken aback. And again, I don't mean nothing wrong to those who live here. I just came here for 6 months to get this pharmacy going stronger, according to my boss. Maybe I shouldn't have even posted this, please, a little help here. God bless you if you do respond. Thanx.
Hey relax man! Germany is a great place! I just got back from there a month or so ago myself. Not understanding the language is a bit of a challenge at first, but once I got to realize that just about everybody out there speaks at least a little english it makes a bit easier. Most people are more than willing to stop and offer directions or will even see you onto the next train going the right direction. I've found that Germany in general much safer than even SLC, Utah here. I've walked the streets of Munich, Berlin, and Frankfurt with no issues at all. So take a good eight our nap, and wake up hungry and thursty because there's some good food and some great beer out there. If worst comes to worst there's still a starbucks on just about every corner out there. and I know there's a BK or McDonnalds in just about every major train station, just in case you need a tast of home. My suggestion, try the Brat stand on the corner, or the Kabap stand and get a Donor Sandwich, and of course try some real snitzel as well, but don't forget the local brews! Good luck to you man!
Thanks for the reply yesterday. Ya. It's not so bad once you get used to it. After being acclimated and getting over the jet lag, I think I am ok now. When I first got here it was like - "I want my mommy!!". lol, jk. (Or maybe not.) I caught my first train today! I am like wow, America really needs trains like this! But, then again, where I am from the cities are not that close together. And I don't think I will ever need a car here, with the trams and trains and taxis, transportation is pretty much covered. I took in a little of the culture, and of course got some Brats and Beer. I am glad that I studied up on rosetta stone before I came, and of course I have my old faithful German/English dictionary. The only bad thing, one of the major American holidays that i thouroughly enjoyed was the 4th of July, and I won't be there for it. Ha, but Oktoberfest is just around the corner.
I think things are going to be fine here. I won't say that I can see me lovin' it, it is a work trip after all, but I think I will be able to get used to it.
****Last Day*****
Since money motivates some I'm starting a pledge thread for the DEV who roots an OTA stock version of Froyo on the EVO. For folks who are going to pledge here, please be serious and adhere to giving in the dollar or euro amount you are pledging. Understand these folks are doing this stuff on their free-time and with the money being offered we are hoping it will put a little more focus on getting this initiative completed sooner rather then later.
At minimum I am hoping for:
hboot.93 hack
Root Stock OTA Froyo 2.2 with Super User
Wifi Tether working
Everything else can stay the same in the ROM.
Once a Developer produces such an image with install instructions and is verified working, then those who pledge will insert funds to to the developer's Paypal account within 24 hours. Should be pretty simple. Again if you pledge, be a man or woman or your word and give this person what they earned.
I'm STARTING out with my pledge of $50 U.S. Dollars. Good luck!
**** Based on a Suggestion Going to include a deadline of 8/20 for the project to be completed to be eligible for the funds ***
Finally should a DEVELOPER decide they don't want the money, whatever is pledged here will be given to the XDA website donation link. And Please keep this to pledge donation amount replies.
(To admin, please make a sticky if possible)
Well it was a good attempt. I want to thank all of those who actually "PLEDGED" money and did not come to this thread to complain about the reasons why we put this pledge together.
For those that are stuck, I think it's time we face the music and consider one of two options:
Continue to Wait. (It's been 17 days since the release of OTA Froyo and no known exploit has been found)
Start looking at another device
I've decided to cut my looses and pre-order on an EPIC. It has been a pleasure being on the EVO side of the XDA forums. I wish the best of luck to everyone here and I hope one day root is achieved and that new bootloader is defeated.
Cheers
Never mind, the other thread is for an updated PRI for rooted phones.
By all means start a new thread.
I thought about starting a similar thread. Many developers have already put a lot of effort into solving this without monetary motivation. The only way I see this helping is if an HTC/Sprint person with access we don't have, helps out. The brightest minds in this community (dare I say anywhere) are already working hard on it. That, or maybe a non-Evo developer will start, but prob doubtful. Either way, $25 to support this. Save me from my stupidity/nonroot hell!
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Since I am chronically impatient and therefore Dl'd the OTA I will throw down $10. Sorry I can't contribute more, new father here.
I can scrape together another $25 for the effort.
the price of one months tether
$30

maybe you should go read again. you need to have a rooted phone already.
Somehow, I don't think that it's the lack of a monetary award that’s keeping the 2.2 root from happening. Normally, bounties are used for issues that nobody’s really working on, or for issues that have been worked on for some time, but are exceedingly difficult. What you’re doing here is setting a precedent where devs will be racing against each other to be first out the door with something that they’re all already working on, to win a monetary reward. I don’t know if that kind of precedent is a good idea.
2.2 root will happen, just be patient.
BTW, I’m no dev, so I can't speak for them, I'm just a member of the xda community. It just makes me a bit uncomfortable to see these kinds of threads. And that’s also not to say that the devs don’t deserve every dollar – they do! They kick ass in every way, shape and form. So maybe when they do root 2.2, send them a donation. But the reason I’ve been coming here since way back when I had the HTC Kaiser (although I only joined up when I got my Evo, I've been lurking here for years), is for the community and the people. Specifically people helping people, just to be helpful, and because they can, because they have the knowledge, and to show what can be done when the corporate locks are removed from a device so that it's capabilities are only limited to the coding skills of the dev, and the imagination of the community. Not for the money. To be frank, I think that if we keep going down this direction, we’ll all be worse off, and xda may change – and not for the better.
Just my $0.02, so take it for what it's worth.
And get off my lawn! Sorry - the above came out with a much more doom and gloom attitude than what I had intended. Didn’t mean to rain on anyone’s parade. ;-)

I totally respect your view and agree that it should not be a money race. Open source is a beautiful thing and that is what I love about this platform. Developers craft their skill and share with others because they have a passion for what they do and not because they want to make money.
Once in a while though we should honor them for what it is they do and since the release of Froyo, it saddens me to read postings from individuals who are mocking people who upgraded their phone via OTA though there were warnings about it, lets face it, Froyo is an enticing update and unfortunately some folks jumped on it. But I also believe that there are a fare amount of people here who either recently purchased the phone or was in the middle of a warranty issue that ended up with an OTA'd Froyo and because these individuals want to mock and make these assumptions, it could be perceived that the only people who are begging for a root are the ones who OTA'd by choice. Regardless on how everyone got to OTA Froyo, we are here now and are patiently waiting for a workaround.
So in the hopes of offering in incentive not only to the fine work of developers here at XDA, but to help those of us who are stuck in limbo, I started this pledge to help get this initiative going.

Agreed, so consider my contribution a donation to whoever roots this beast.
You can put me down for $20.00. Im in a slightly different boat than everyone else. My phone already had 2.2 on it when I picked it up. I dont know if it was that way out of the box or if one of the nice Sprint employees was kind enough to upgrade it for me. I paid for the phone/service when the store opened but didnt come back for the phone until after lunch because they needed to port the number, paperwork, etc and I didnt have time to wait.
That being said, I bought a bunch of software for my N1 which is now useless as I dont have root and Id really like to have that stuff back working again.
it's unfortunate that an open-source community, where devs work with free software, needs to resort to money to motivate people. i understand that there are devs out there who will do this for free because they enjoy doing it for free (so not all devs need money for motivation), but lets be real. you're promoting an environment where open source also means "but not for free".
there's no doubt that there are very very very talented devs here and maybe they do deserve some money. but what happens when they start thinking, "hmmm, if people are willing to pay just for root, I wonder what they'll pay for my services?"

Open Source doesn't mean the devs are working for free. If they want to sell their services then only those willing to pay shall receive such services. It is totally up to the devs.

Also, just because people are offering a bounty, doesn't mean that's why the devs are doing it. Like I said before, bounty or no bounty, someone will find a way to root froyo, and when that happens, I doubt that they'll have done it for the money.

Should a developer decide that they don't want the money for their work, then what ever funds we have collected here, we'll donate it to the XDA forum paypal account to keep to site running. In either case the money will go to a good cause.
There needs to be a deadline tho. If not..it means it can be a year from now and still collect. I'd say by next Friday. A simple root will do, we can hold off for nand unlock. Atleast with simple root we can still tether which is what we mostly want.
Put me down for $20! I'm a newb with all this. Came over from the jailbreak world just last week. Can someone give me a heads up on how I donate the money once the root is released? Do these devs usually have pay pal donation function on there sites?

Yeah, I know some will say it's immature but as someone who has jumped in front of a train of android fanboys time and time again defending all of my WP7 devices is getting harder and harder when it seems that not even Microsoft wants to take themselves seriously. If they don't begin to take themselves and us, the more intelligent userbase, seriously then I won't be taking them seriously and my 8 WP7 devices will be traded/sold off on craigslist for another unfortunate soul to pick up. I love the WP7 UI, absolutely love it. I don't know where to go after this to get a UI that's even 1/10th as good as the WP7 UI but this phone that microsoft more or less promised the world on is looking less and less so on a daily basis. If Microsoft doesn't stop taking us seriously... I don't know where I'll go for a phone OS because android is now too slow for me and Iphone screens are too tiny, but I will certainly take my rather spendy business elsewhere. I know the meager 2100 dollars I've spent on WP7 devices may not seem like much to a corporate giant like microsoft but that's more than most people are willing to pay in WP7's current form.
I don't blame you dude. Its getting ridiculous! Microsoft stated that the future updates for Windows Phone 7 would blow the Iphone and Android out the water... I was really excited by this as I had just picked up my Mozart, now 6 months on, no updates at all, nothing, zip! I have also been reading that NoDo will be the only update this year!?!?!
Yes I'm excited to have copy and paste on my device (something that should have been present in the first place) but Microsoft are missing a trick here! Yes this phone has a great UI but without getting the simple things right I can see it flopping. I'm also struggling with the accuracy of many of the Microsoft built in features such as Bing Maps, which can't seem to get me anywhere at all!
SORT IT OUT MICROSOFT!

No blame here, either. In my case, I have an iPhone an HD2 and soon the Android equivalent of the iPhone: Nexus S, to keep my tech veins fixed.
In all honesty I don't know where to go from here though. May have to pick up another HD2. Android is too choppy for me and as much as I like the iphone with the WP7 theme the keyboard is too small.

Well I mean I'll be angry too, but wp7 as is, is still a fantastic device. You could just stay with it, and understand that it's just unsupported now.
Or would you bail because of the principle of it all?
I think it's utterly pathetic the way Microsoft is handling this. They came out a strong contender, but now are returning to what they were: a joke.

Primarily the principle... and as much as I hate to admit it I would like multi-tasking... if I am playing ilomilo and I sit my phone down for a minute I have to start the level over again... it's pretty lame. If tombstoning apps worked as it should it wouldn't be an issue.
M$? Seriously? You think they're delaying the update as some sort of diabolical scheme to make money? Or is it just because they want to taunt their users? I'm sorry so much of your self worth is tied up in a phone that you can't bear someone making fun of it.
I think it's pretty obvious it's not out yet because Samsung's firmware is garbage and they're trying to work around it. After this first one future updates should go much more smoothly.
Well I am pretty sure I am picking up a HTC 7 Pro/Arrive from Sprint on March 20th, and it comes pre-installed with the NoDo update. Obviously the update already works and is out if HTC is manufacturing the Arrive and will have them in stores on the 20th.
I would say that the issue of update is falling just on Microsoft.

Eh, they've had 6 months to do this. We are not children, they should've tested it on two of their most popular devices much before the release that bricked some devices with 0 benefits. The corporate world is not something you procrastinate in if you want to succeed in whatever market. I have no doubt given the support WP7 will be the best out there but it truly doesn't seem microsoft is taking it seriously. Samsung is garbage when it comes to drivers. That is and will continue to be their weak point for whatever reason.

When did they ever officially say "90 days after CES" ? At first it was the "January Update." Then February. Then Early March. Now it's late March. I won't be surprised if it dips into ****ing April.
WP7 is a solid OS, there's nothing mediocre about it. It makes iOS look like an archaic toy in terms of UI.
But with all that said, Microsoft is taking WAY too long to bring the OS up to feature parity with Android and iOS, and it's starting to get a little ****ing ridiculous. what we SHOULD be getting this month is Mango, not NoDo. Microsoft is dragging their damned feet, and the more they do it the further they'll fall behind.
They CANNOT afford to take their sweet damn time like this. If they do, the platform will die.

January and February were tech blog rumors. Android reallly doesnt have much further to advance so that's not a concern. With them it's pretty much a hardware battle from here on out.

Hello community!
I won my very own titan tonight at the windows phone inner circle party at the hard rock hotel in downtown san diego.
I tweeted and tweeted until I couldnt' feel my fingers to be called up by the microsoft staff and won my own unlocked titan!
the event was awesome with free food and drinks and all of the mango phones worldwide on display!
I saw and handled the titan, focus s, focus flash, allegro, lg sander phone, fujitsu all on display, I was so ecstatic to be there oh and thank god my boyfriend figured out that we had to unlock or unprotect our tweets because the microsoft team couldn't see our hashtags to participate in the contest.
unfortunately some non deserving people won as well, some girl won that had no idea what she was winning (a titan as well) and asked if it worked for verizon, i almost rolled my eyes out my own head watching her win,
the windows phone inner circle party is coming to a city near you! im so thankful i won my next windowsphone and can now go back to att without a contract and can sell my hd7 and pay my disconnect fee for tmobile with the proceeds,
im too ecstatic for words!! happy happy joy joy!!
Congratulations! After handling all those devices do you think any of them stood out as superior to the rest of them? (In terms of build quality, aesthetics, or anything)
Yes I say tie for HTC and Samsung both of their offerings have fantastic design and build, samsung edged out in specs I think and being available on a better network, it was interesting to see the Fujitsu allegro and jil sander phone in the flesh, however im so excited for my new phone, just mulling over how to get away from t-mobile the least expensive way possible, you can check my posted pics from the party from my twitter account @noelitaux

No one person 'deserves' the prize anymore than any other. That's why it's called a prize.
Congrats on your new freebie.
Congratulations! What an awesome prize to win! If I may ask, which twitter profile were you following to know about the cities (inner circle) was hitting?
Oh man wish I knew about the protected thing. I wanted a Titan so bad i'm so jealous, oh well guess i'm out 200 bucks to use my upgrade ha.
Enjoy! I had VIP at least and open bar all night ha... probably drank 200 worth of drinks between me and my buddy ha.
Congrats
I couldn't make the party cause something came up. I rsvpd a while ago to the NYC one. I saw the pictures and regret not going. Looked like a lot of fun. Congrats on the phone.
