[Q] Unrevoked expert needed - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Trying to get what I thought was a simple question answered, but no luck so far, in some other threads, and other forums.
I am s-off via unrevoked forever (for a long time now). I have only ever taken Sprint OTA updates via unrevoked's recommended method of first reverting to a stock recovery, then taking the OTA, then reverting to a CWM recovery, and re-applying su.
Never had any issue with staying rooted this way.
Along comes GB. So, I flash back to stock recovery, take the 1st GB update, no problem. I then re-flash CWM recovery, and reapply su, no problem. I'm rooted again, still s-off, all my root apps still work fine, and I'm running Sprint GB.
Along comes the 2nd GB update (maintenance release). I try to flash the stock recovery, it appears to flash ok. But, if I try to boot into it, I just get the triangle-exclamation (which I think means no recovery is present). And, I cannot take the OTA. It errors out.
I can re-flash CWM recovery with no problem, and boot back into it, either though ROM Manager, or a volumeDown-Power cycle. s-off is still there, root apps still work, so I'm rooted.
I am, however, at hboot 2.16, I guess since I took that first OTA.
So, I'm at hboot 2.16, with s-off, and rooted, with CWM recovery.
So, why can't I flash that stock recovery in order to be able to take that 2nd GB OTA?
Thanks.

dude...f***ing AWESOME ROM!! i had no idea that you could do that with the evo!!
watch the video in my sig....will answer a few question! k thx!!

Why don't you flash the update from the forum like most people do, or possibly user one of the infinitely better roms available at this time that integrate the update, like synergy, mik's, misfits, ect.ect.ect.

fYI - you posted in the wrong section and you are going to get flamed... Also if you rooted your Evo to flash roms why do you unflash them to take OTA updates when they are all over xda development. My friend you are only asking for trouble and it seems to of found you....
My goodness people do some damn research before doing anything.. Quite sure you have a good reason for rooting then unrooting to flash something thats on every page in xda... Quite sure you have your reasons

Love the video. I already Thanked You. Please can you tell me where the XXXDA site is...

I Am no Expert with unrevoked but I am fimilar with it when you say your were trying to flash a stock recovery and got the triangle with an explanation mark that is what i believe is a stock recovery and it is looking for a pass card in the sdcard slot that techs use to reflash rom as to the second update you said you have hboot2.16 with s-off that is more than likely why your are getting the error the second update unroots the phone and returns the phone to s-on and will not let you root so be glad the second update failed as some of the others have said just install one the stock rooted updates and all will be fine and you will still have root

Sorry 4G peeps

Little confusion on ota and un-forevet

Ok, so I did the root from 2.2 down to 2.1 with unrevoked, and added forever, but im still a little confused as to wether I can accept the 2.2 ota, and stay rooted, im sure I have read about it before, but I would like some real info.

You can take the OTA and maintain root with Unrevoked forever. UF turns the security permissions off, so it does not matter what you flash you always have root access.
Although in the future I would recommend not taking anymore OTAs since they often patch these holes with each new release. It is conceivable that they could release an update to turn the security permissions back on and plug current exploits to gain root. It is always best to wait for the rooted version of an update to be released. With Froyo the rooted versions were out before the official OTA came out.
To answer your question simply, yes you can take the current OTA after Unrevoked Forever and maintain root. Furthermore, there is little risk anymore since a method to root Froyo has finally been discovered.

Ok, well i downloaded the ota froyo, started the install, did the unpacking pic, then after that it seems to be stuck at android with a white triangle and exclamation point that is yellow, so know what, pull battery and forget that or uh what.

probably have to do a battery pull at that point. If you are using a custom recovery, the OTA won't work. I just used the RUU to do it. Otherwise, you need to find the stock recovery image (not sure where its posted) to use the OTA. The RUU is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=746705
To gain root after updating, you need to install a custom recovery. If you go to the Unrevoked Forever web page, they have some recoveries in PC36IMG.zip format. The Amon RA one didn't work for me, but ClockworkMod does flash fine. One you have the custom recovery, you need to download a rooted rom. Netarchy has a completely stock one posted around here somewhere. That's the one I used. You can also use any custom ROMs once you have the recovery. You're supposed to be able to use the fastboot method to install a custom recovery, but I didn't have success doing that (though I didn't really work with it for very long). Hope that helps.
yeah i pulled the battery, and everything went back fine, so i guess at this point just get rid of that idea, and stick to custom rom then right.

You can, or you can download the stock rooted 2.2. Or if you want to be thorough, you can run the 2.2 RUU, then install a custom recovery image, then flash the rooted 2.2 or custom 2.2 ROM. Probably recommend the 2.2 RUU as it will update your radios for you without you having to find and flash them individually. But that's just me.

[Q] 2.3 ota + root

ok my friend made me root his evo so he can tether while he went on vacation like 2 months ago. now he doesn't care if he is rooted or not and since the update is coming i figured i should ask this.
ok so ive googled, googled, and googled some more and i can't find a straitup f***ing answer to this. since my friend is rooted but still on the stock rom, if he accepts the 2.3 ots will he:
1. loose root and be stock on stock 2.3 rom
2. turn his pretty little evo into a fancy paper weight
just give me a 1 or 2 as a comment so i know whether or not to have him drive over and make me unroot it for him since he lives kinda far away and doesn't come often...
1. Lose root and be on 2.3

^This guy.
But I am a bit confused myself. What exactly is edited in the android system so that we have root access?
If he's removed any system apps, he won't be able to accept the OTA. I've never personally had this problem because I've never tried, but I have heard of others experiencing issues.

he didn't delete any of the apps so...
Yeah but does he have a custom recovery? If he has cwm or amon ra I don't think the ota will flash.
if you cant live large, look big in the coffin!!!
Completely stock , accept the ota and loose root will be the only issue. Only if everything is untouched, no frozen apps or anything. Just tell him to sync his contacts and what not prior to.
UnrEVOked has some info on un-rooting and going back to RUU. I believe it's on their forever root page for EVO. Basically (don't quote me) they recommend getting a older stock Rom and flashing that before update.
Also you could go back to the nandroid you did of his stock setup... (you did a nandroid right?!) And then update which will cause you to lose root.

His phone is bone stock except for root and amon recovery. No frozen apps no custom rom. So he should be fine?

He'll be fine. He's just going to lose root and custom recovery.
A system upgrade is like a Windows upgrade. Totally reformats and installs the OS
Ok thanks

Does the same apply if I have a custom kernel installed?
There have been cases where people have bricked their phones doing an OTA. Since a lot of things change and vary between ROMs, it is best to just unroot, and then accept the OTA.
Or, simply wait a day or two, someone will have a rooted version of the new OTA posted over in the development threads. Problems solved and avoided
the update will probably fail
i have a question. im on cm7 and i want to try the new gingerbread update, i have unrevoked forever. if i go back to a stock rom and remove my recovery can i get the ota?
You need to go back to stock recovery and you can get the OTA, as far as losing root, I had unrevoked forever and I was able to just flash a new recovery after it was done and I was fine. It didnt reformat anything nor will they have an update that reformats your data. I still had superuser installed. I tested this on 3.3 OTA back in the day, but there is no telling what HTC will do with each update. Now I use custom roms and just wait for my favorite devs the incorporate it into the rom. Best bet is to wait till the rooted update is on the forums and install that.

So, what you're saying is that, if you get your phone back to how it was when you bought it and first took it out of the box, factory setup, can you get the official factory release for updating your factory set phone to the new factory released update??
Did you SERIOUSLY just ask that????

Q> My phone is rooted.. how do I get the OTA update?

I want the new update on my EVO.. it is rooted with Unrevoked or revoked..
When I run the OTA update it goes to the screen with the android and a Triangle with an ! in it..
What do I need to do to get the new update?
Here are 3 scenarios that will help you out:
1. You can unroot by running an RUU, take the update, and lose root user access. There is currently no method to attain root user access on the new OTA update.
2. *IF you performed a root method in which you flashed UNREVOKED FOREVER - You can unroot, accept the OTA update, flash AmonRa PC36IMG.zip and still retain root user access
3. You can manually update the radios, wimax, etc; and then flash the STOCK root version of the OTA update from the dev section.
Good luck, and ask any questions you need.
You are already rooted so the easiest way to get the new update is to flash a rom based on the new update. I personally use fresh 4.1.1, but there are tons of options to chose from.
You have gotten great suggestions and help above and my suggestion would be before going any further do alot more research. There is a lot of helpful information in here but none of it will help you at all if you dont read it.
I believe your best route is to go with the thoughts of the second posters scenarios and good luck. Have fun with your Evo but read OP's and stickies because in all honesty you could of been updated your new radios and rom within 20 minutes if you were already rooted.
Stock Rom - all the info can be found in his OP
i was android 2.2 then installed kings rom and it out me to 2.3.3
Can someone elaborate a bit on this point:
2. *IF you performed a root method in which you flashed UNREVOKED FOREVER - You can unroot, accept the OTA update, flash AmonRa PC36IMG.zip and still retain root user access
Not sure what I used but I suspect unrevoked forever but I"m not sure. When i tried grabbing the OTA, i wound up in a recovery screen I think. Can I disable root from in there, grab the OTA, and then download this AmonRa or should I just apply an image already floating around? Someone suggested Fresh 4.1.1
@joeynuggetz
Im not sure how to step back out from the recovery after trying ota, but I WILL say, to all who care about keeping root, just use one of the roms in the dev section that is stock with root. There are a few.
But yes, as was said earlier, if you used unrevoked forever (and only you know), from what I've read you can take ota, then reapply amonRA using the pc36img. (Im only reiterating what has already been suggested)

Should I take the OTA if I'm not rooted yet

Just got my S3. Should I take the initial OTA or will that make it harder for me to root?
I've done my initial homework by searching but I'm still a little unclear. I'm so accustomed to HTC with their OTAs changing Hboot and preventing s-off, etc. I found the guide on how to root but does the bootloader need to be unlocked?
This is my first Samsung device so please be gentle to this noob.

Your safe to take it, initial root process will be the same regardless. You'll most likely root flashing cwm recovery or a insecure kernel in odin so the system wont matter.only the vzw model has a locked bootloader. doesnt apply to us
If you are at n00b status i personally reccomend mskips toolkit found here:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1746680 ---guys a genius, has everything you need.
you can't OTA update a phone that's rooted or has CWM on it, so definitely update before you root.
Exactly, it will download but will fail on the install because CWM is installed. You must have the Samsung stock recovery installed in order to update. Depending on what ROM you are running, you can re-install stock recovery, install OTA update, re-install CWM, then root again. That is what I did, but I am running Rooted Stock.

Really the ota's don't matter ne way as the only important parts are the modems which can be dl'd here and applied in cwm anyway
Thanks fellas. My only concern was with the ability to root and staying unlocked after taking an OTA. I'm traumatized by the EVO 3D's OTA that updated the Hboot and was just a pain in the ass.
What's the current OTA address anyway?

Unroot to accept update

Hi,
I have a rooted Sprint GS3, running the stock ROM with just one or two root based apps. Do I need to unroot to accept the OTA update? If so, how do I go about doing that?

if you would like to run a 4.3 stock ROM, there are a couple in the development section that you can choose from without having to run the 4.3 boot loader that contains KNOX. That way you don't have to go through the unroot process to accept the OTA.

Thanks. I think the preference is to accept the OTA. If we need to unroot, we'll do that if we can figure out how. Sorry for being a little vague. I'm trying to help someone else out.
ok, you can go here Restore to unrooted MD4 follow that and you're good to go
I was stock rooted with clockwork recovery.
Took the OTA without unrooting with no problems at all, just had to re-root when it was done.

Really? I thought it was always a bad idea with a custom recovery. Maybe we will try it rooted as well. Thanks.
Every other time I've tried it would download, but just wouldn't flash the OTA.
This time, it did. Surprised me.

Relax . You do not have to update. You do not have to lose Root. Check out THIS thread. It will explain a few things to you in detail about Updates, and how to stop the update nag. If you want to update to the latest TW 4.3 Stock Rooted, check out the thread HERE. Just make sure you read, and read again before doing anything. Also make sure to download the correct Rom. There are several versions on the thread.

Thanks for the answer.
I actually want to update to stock 4.3, and I was trying to achieve that by getting the OTA update.
And i was wondering if i can still do that?
If I simply can't then I'll just go to CM instead of getting other rooms since I used to have them with my old HTC.
Thanks again
If you want completely Stock Rooted 4.3, it's the second link I posted for you. It's the Stock, Rooted, Factory Rom, with Knox removed. All done by CNexus . Just be sure to read before doing anything. As there are several versions posted. I would highly suggest going this route instead of taking the OTA update. Once you take the OTA you will have Knox, and a different bootloader.

Thanks a lot man, I'm having a problem installing the ROM, I'm getting assert error (status 7) error when trying to install the odexed rom,
I have just updated my CWM to 6.0.4.5
Sorry I cant reply to the thread directly, need 10 posts to be able to do so.

edit: now it's stuck on boot loop
edit: I downloaded the original recovery rom and installed it from ordin, then updated phone through kies. it's all good now.
