Hello, I am a noob, i dont want to be a noob, but i am one anyway, so be kind and answer my noob questions
( and yes i did tried to find the answers and no i didn't find them.. )
1. after rooting with unrevoked - ( default sttings - no touching )
what ROM whould i have?
the same Stock HTC Sense Froyo - Android 2.2 + ROOT (superuser, busybox..)
or a Stock Android 2.2 rom?
1.1 and could i install apps2sd+ on that rooted system?
1.2 or i would be without any rom, and i would need to install one from the SD from Recovery ( the default one after enrevoked - Clockwork )
( i'm planning on this one)
1.3. if i do have some rom installed after unrevooked: what do i get from that Rom i wish to download from XDA that i dont get in the Rom after enrevoked?
anywhere i look for the anser to that i cant find a difinative answer for that..
2. what is the recommended methon to create an ext3/4 partition and what is the max or recommended partition size for Desire (i have 16GB low-class sandisk SD, but i dont mind waitng)
well the answers ARE out there (yes they are) but here you go again:
1.1) after gaining root with unrevoked you will simply have a stock HTC rom with root access (and a custom recovery - clockworkmod)
1.2) you cannot apply A2SD+ to this ROM you will have right after rooting, what you can do is to download a pre-rooted Stock ROM (same as one you have now) with A2SD+ implemented. however it would be stupid, custom roms are faster, better in performance and in battery life so go for them)
1.3) i guess the answer is the same as for the 1.2nd Q
2) best method is to use Gparted Live CD (it is a bootable CD) download it and burn to a CD then boot it up @ pc. mount USB storage in recovery on the phone, plug it in PC and format your sd.
for a2sd+ FAT32 and after a 1GB EXT3/4 (ext4 is better, dont use more than 1GB it may cause trouble, and 1GB is looots of space)
for data2ext or other there should be a recommended partition layout that will make them work as good as they can in your ROM's thread.
also as you are a new user i do recommend going S-OFF (is as easy as rooting, seriously - CD method) then appling a custom hboot and running an InsertCoin ROM CM7 - with custom hboot it will be super fast and you will get lots of space.
when doing S-OFF remember to be either on stock rooted rom or on oxygen rom.
Thanks for the answer, for now i'm planning on the Stock pre-rooted one with a2sd+.
that's because i'm looking for a rom with:
1. Sense ( Froyo sense since the GingerB sensation sense needs S-OFF..)
2. a2sd+ ( Max optimal size for the partition )
2. Minimal add-on apps on the Rom.
3. Minimal removed apps ( maybe with ability to manualy remove a system app but i dont know if that again requires S-OFF )
4. maybe a gingerbread style shutdown\wakeup ( CRT Style ) animation?
i allready searched the pinned topics for a Rom like that and all i found is the pre-rooted stock..
i dont want to be deviating from the Stock sense with too many changes, and on the other hand i do want to be able to make some changes to the rom.
the rom i currently wish to use has Undervolt -100mv and it says it's for support with the kernel of the RUU, but if it's a pre rooted why isnt it allready supporing the RUU..?
and in that Rom's page there is a recommended Radio img, but i Dont have to change to it right..? ( It's only recommended NOT required.. )
anyway my RUU+Radio is:
RUU_Bravo_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2.29.405.5_Radio_32.49.00.32U_5.11.05.27_release_159811_signed.exe
Nearly all GB ROM's will work fine with S-ON (Stock HBOOT), dunno where did you get this info.

got that info from my local android fans forum, which also didnt gave me difinative answer yet..
Then now you know - you dont need S-OFF for Gingerbread A2SD ROM's.
As for number 2.
Use g-parted to make the partitions, there is a video guide in the desire dev forums, its on of the stickys. I would post a link, but I'm not at my pc . You don't really want to go over the 1GB for the ext partition, any thing bigger starts to slow down the ROM
I had a feeling that the GB roms did need a new radio, or at least some if them do. But the ROM should tell you if that is the case.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA Premium App
in both the Roms i now intresten in it says 'Recommended' Radio, and since i'm a Noob user i do not have premission to post at the dev forums and ask on the Rom's topic.
one of them is acually the radio i ahve now, but the LeeDroid one Recommends a deffrent one and again from the info i gathered from my local forum for android 2.3 with Sense i HAVE to change the radio, is that true \ false?
is Recommended = Required || OR || Recommended != Required..
<@LeeDrOiD-> matched radio is generally a good idea - iRC channel...
you never MUST change radio
it is only recommended, do it if you encounter problems with connectivity after flashing a rom (reception, wi-fi etc)
however i think you MUST have a radio from 2.2 (froyo) roms at least
if you rooted while on 2.2 you should be ok, if you were on 2.1 while rooting try updating the radio
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1054435
Awesome rom ... try it Don't need s-off
Flash radio from first page also ...
3. Minimal removed apps ( maybe with ability to manualy remove a system app but i dont know if that again requires S-OFF ) - System app remover is an option
why in LeeDroid's rom and and the last submitted rom, there's undervolt?
why does the Rom needs to be undervolt and how does that effect the preformance&stability of the system?
Also What is the best method for saving space ( a2sd+ \ data2whatever \ ...? )
ROMs dont need undervolting, they dont need anything...
undervolting is set up in kernel, and it means the processor will work under smaller voltage which leads to better battery life but generally it compromises stability. however they wouldnt set it to a value that would cause trouble, so this is just an info for geeks so that they know that by default the kernel provided with rom undervolts the cpu (some may not like that, as they want for example best performance - overclocking rather than undervolting)
Thanks alot guys, you really helped me!
hopefully the rooting would go as smooth as butter,
i havn't dicided on a rom yet, since all the ones you sent in this thread are looking great!
Just try all of them and decide yourself.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
I also wouldn't recommend that you do the S-Off until you've played with rom's and decided that you really must try a CM7 hboot rom or something. There's plenty can be done with S-On and it gives a degree of safety against bricking the phone. I speak from experience. I did however recover mine in the end after much learning but I really wouldn't go S-Off unless / until you understand the dangers associated with it and the somewhat limited benefits to those who know little of Linux or the Android OS.

Since I got my HTC wildfire late last year I've been following these forums and reading up on android terminology. Thanks to all those who warned me not to update my phone, I was so close to doing so however I believe that these can be rooted now. I've finally got annoyed with the shortage of memory on eclair and now that I have a bit more time over the summer I want to root it and so I have a few questions.
1) I know that to "unroot" I need to use an RUU. Looking on shipped roms, I can't see a vodafone uk eclair RUU, so which one would I use?
2) After creating a gold card, will you be able to use the sd card as normal (ie to store music, videos, photos, apps etc)
3) Looking around, there are many different recoveries in the development forum, I know that unevoked already comes with a recovery but should I use that one or another?
4) Has the switched off chargeing problem been fixed in clockwork recovery?
5) After rooting, I plan to install CM7. Does everything thing work properly in CM? (I ask this because a while back (before CM7) I read that that camara didn't work as well as stock and that the FM radio didn't work at all)
6) I know that there is official froyo apps 2 sd but I've seen other unofficial ones around. What are the differences between all of these and which one should I use?
7) I know that CM7 is a non-sense rom, I don't think I'll miss much of sense except the clock/weather widget. Is there anything available that is exactly like the htc clock/weather widget?
8) I know there are different radios around, will I need to update mine?
Thanks
1) maybe, depends on the method of rooting
2)yes you will be able to, the gold card only changed the hexcode inbiult, so you should be able to store things on the sd card
3)clockmod is the way to go for me, i had a htc desire and it worked brilliant for me.
4)if you dont want to use that version of clock mod you can also use a previous version which will do the same thing.
5)and when you install and download CM7, make sure you download the specific version form the websute for your device.
6)it doesnt really mater, its just moving the apps to the sd card form the phone, this is done by rooting it and gaining root acess.
7)an widget app similar to that is beautiful widgets ( i think you need to pay fro it but get it form 4shared or somewhere else) but they have most htc widgets, and MAYBE there might be ports in the future or have been done already.
8)it is recomended to upgrade your radio when you do your first root.

1) My method of rooting would be unevoked
4) What version of clockmod would you recommend?
8) Is updating the radio risky? and can you undo it if needed?
any answers?
Also I got one more question,
When should I create a gold card, before/after root? or after flashing a new rom?
Thanks in advance
1) You are on Eclair, in which case you can only go with Unrevoked. No other alternative, so, there are no issues there.
4) There are essentially two versions - 2.x and 3.x, and, honestly, you will want to keep both, because 2.x supports flashing of Radios and Froyo ROMs, and 3.x supports flashing Gingerbread ROMs. What you can do is when using Unrevoked, Select Custom Recovery Image, and Point it to a 3.x Recovery File. This way, your primary Recovery will be 3.x. Then, download ROM Manager from the Market, Select Install Clockworkmod Recovery from within that app, and it will install 2.x on your SDCard (Secondary Recovery). So, essentially, you have both.
8) Radio flashing is not risky per se, but, you have got to be careful and follow basics like not interrupting the process, making sure you have sufficient battery charge etc. because, mistakes here can brick your phone. You cant "undo" it but you can flash your old radio version again.
- Goldcard is only needed when flashing an RUU. If you are simply rooting using Unrevoked and installing Custom ROMs, you dont need one.
lastly, make sure you use an old version of Unrevoked, (3.14 upto 3.21), not the latest.
Thanks for your amazing post
Could I ask why an old version of unrevoked is needed?
Where can I get an old version from as when I click on wildfire on the unrevoked website it gives me v3.32
Rooted but....
hi. i just got a htc wildfire and i want to install cyanogen mod. I already rooted my phone using alpharevX and got the S-OFF message. But when i install ROM manager and tried to install CN7 i got the message " An error occured while attempting to run privileged commands". Is there something wrong or something that i missed?
S-OFF =/= rooting.

The newer version actually lowers compatibility with the Wildfire, rather than raising it. You are bound to get some error or other, unless extremely lucky. (And the most common one would be "Firmware too new?" error).
Just try searching the Wildfire Forum for links. Many have uploaded 3.14, but unfortunately, the posts are all scattered somewhere.
EDIT:, NVM, You can get it here:
http://downloads.unrevoked.com/recovery/3.14/reflash_package.exe
There is also clockworkmod 4.x should I use that?
and
Which method would you recommend for flashing new roms, via rom manager or recovery?
Thanks for all your help
Yes, you can. Although I am still sticking with 3.1.0.2, because of two reasons - laziness and a few reports by users which suggest some problems with 4.x. Compatibility between 3.x and 4.x is the same though - ie. you can only install Gingerbread ROMs on them.
Also, personally, I prefer flashing ROMs through Recovery, rather than ROM Manager.
If you are S-OFF, you can stay on CWM 3 and use the PC49IMG.zip file to flash a radio. Simply put inside the android-info.txt from a RUU and the radio.img you want to flash, then reboot under HBOOT.
I have a HTC Desire, (PVT4 SLCD, Erasesize 40000)
I have rooted my phone for almost 4 months. I already know a lot about flashing etc, but never researched s-off. It seems kind of risky to me, as i have the latest desire. Correct me if i'm wrong. I have a few questions.
1.Is it worth to s-off my device
2.If so why?
3.How big is the chance of bricking my phone
4.If i s-off which rom should i be on, as i saw that heavy sense 3.0 roms can make it difficult, AOSP like oxygen or just stock 2.2
Thanks in advance.
1. Yes
2. you can modify system files while booted, not just via ADB. Also you can change HBOOT partitions - so you can use the NAND memory efficiently.
3. If you follow all instructions for the procedure, then there is 1% chance of bricking it. just stick to the info/guide.
4. Some of those ROMs do have problems with s-off. I managed to S-OFF mine on insertcoin's Froyo data++ ROM (2.0.1). But literally most of the ROMs should work. I'd go with something lighter with - e.g. CM7/MIUI/Redux/GV/Oxygen
I'm going to try it today, i think..
Wish me luck

re 4.
after you're done with S-OFF you can run your favourite ROM again, it is just that while you're doing this, you need a "simple ROM". what I did:
* nandroid backup (so you keep your favorite ROM, settings etc)
* flash pre-rooted stock ROM
* S-OFF your device
* nandroid restore (restore the backup you made before).
hope this helps.
With revolutionary one will get rooted and s-off in step.
Swyped from Oxygen with Transparent XDA App
You can follow this guide at http://wiki.rootzwiki.com/index.php/HTC_Desire for S-OFFing with Revolutionary. It's better detailed than Revolutionary's own wiki.
You may not have to do the Installing Superuser and su step if you're rooted already, mine stayed rooted when I S-OFF'd today.
Big advantage of S-OFFing is I could start using the Oxygen r2 HBOOT from Alpharev.nl site, making the system partition drastically smaller (250mb is wasted space for custom roms that aren't bloated Sense) that way I could use more of /Data for apps. It's apparently better for battery life not having apps load off the sdcard with the various apps2sd and dalvik2sd workarounds when using an sd-ext partition.
I did need to move fastboot.exe to the folder adb.exe is in in order to flash a new partition image (instructions on alpharev.nl; scroll down to "modified partition tables") as I got an error about AdbWinApi.dll being missing. They've changed things around in the Android SDK installer so adb.exe needs an additional download via SDK Manager.
p.s. Also I restored my backup of Sense before S-OFFing, just to be on the safe side, Alpharev.nl recommended this but the other guides made no mention of it. It was probably best as my current ROM, Oxygen, has apps2sd implemented and apparently this can interfere with the flashing process.
Another thing, i don't have time this week because of a wedding, but is it crucial to make a nandroid as i can't restore one(amonra 2.0.0), i'll try revolutionary when i do it.
Just got a few questions please hear me out ok , sorry if I posted in wrong forum
(running htc dev 2.3.3 on my gsm desire )
1. After I soff with revolutionary , does unrevoked 3 root method work ? or should I downgrade to froyo then unrevoked 3 (wanna gain root so I can change roms )
2. On revolutionary I get a invalid beta code (tried caps , lower case typing in every way I could think off ) what am I doing wrong ?
3. Are there any other ways to soff my desire besides revolutionary ?
4. Other ways to root my desire? Which are easy as unrevoked ?
5. Are there any android 4.0 roms for the desire which have the onscreen home back etc buttons ?
6. Know a stable low battery consumption rom with sense 2.1 (after the same sense found in dhd , not after 3.0 etc found in sensation )
7. Whats a good miui rom which is in English and stable (don’t care if it’s in uk English etc) for the desire ?
8. Are there any custom roms which use rru method of transfer ? same as htc’s method of transfer
9. What normally causes the system to freeze ? when I use the stock htc camera , phone etc occasionally my phone freezes up for like a 1 min then reboots ? doesn’t occur with 3rd party apps
10. What causes the system to not shut down ? I know it’s not my apps even without them it still occurs
11. Is it possible to dual boot another os on this phone ?
12. How do I know if I need to install a radio ?
I am almost a total noob but anyhow I decided to drop these questions as I couldn’t find a straight forward answer and plus my phone not being able to shut down when I need it to is a major inconvenience eg when I am at the airport or area’s which require phone to be off
Thanks
Alot of your questions do have a straight answer on the xda forum. Like the miui rom, try the miui-xj ! Easy to find. I am also new to flashing and solving problems don't get me wrong. Spend some more time reading here. And if you have to switch off your phone you can also put your phone in flightmode....pretty easy. Good luck finding your answers, maybe somebody else can give them to you but I have simply not the knowledge.
With kind regards
Sent from my miui based desire
1,4 - Once you're S-Off, you can flash a custom hboot if you like, you can flash a custom recovery (both via fastboot), and from this custom recovery you can flash custom ROMs, which are generally rooted.
6 - I personally still use baadnwz/InsertCoin-1.4.4 (when I'm not playing around with newer and fancier and/or more experimental ROMs) but that one is no longer being developed. You could look at tamirda/RevolutioN and/or some of coolexe's work, among others. Look at the 'Desire Index'-thread in the development forum.
9 - undervolting, overheating, loose connections, corrupt storage, (moisture-)damaged circuitry, …
10 - Settings->Power->Fast boot <-- uncheck it if it's checked.
11 - Not quite, but you can make nandroid+ext backups for different ROMs that you can then restore and boot. Preferably ROMs that use the same hboot.
I have no personal experience with revolutionary or with the htc 2.3.3 ruu.
12 - most of the time its recommended to flash the radio to the latest one.first run the Rom you want if the signal is bad you can always flash a newer radio later. And always read ALL the info on the OP from the rom you want.

You will probably have issues with wifi or camera if you have an older radio version that is required by the installed ROM.
In some ROM threads it is specified explicitly which radio to use. And you can always ask (in the ROM thread) if somebody already didn't ask that.
7. Both Miui-xj and Miui-au are in english and i believe stable. Been using au lately but used xj for about a month for daily use with no issues.
8. Are you refering to OTA (over the air updates) if so both the above rom's support this feature.
12. I believe it depends on the rom you are using, tried a few rom's with my old radio 5.11.05.27 and never had an issue (most of them recommended the latest radio) upgraded a few days with 5.17.05.23 and the only thing i noticed was a little better wifi coverage. (could also be placebo effect )

re question 8 an exe which does everything flashing, installing the rom , updating radio etc , not ota
I'm not aware of any rom that flashes the radio for you, but then again I haven't tried that many rom's myself.
Hi!
*Read the last sentence (in red) of this post for my actual question, if you don't want to read everything (which I can imagine you don't ).*
Here's my situation:
My GF's Wildfire S (stock ROM, rooted, specs below) has always had low internal memory. The phone uses the Link2SD app, but still the memory ran lower and lower. In the last weeks the internal memory became so low, the phone stopped notifying when new emails arrived etc. Annoying, so I'm here to find help to fix this.
Since about two months ago (maybe three or even more? ) the phone has an 'update available' message, which does not install. Firstly, because of low memory, but secondly because it won't install: when freeing up some space to make the update work, it starts installing by rebooting and then an android with excalamtion mark in a triangle is visible and nothing happens. I have searched for this problem and found others with similar symptoms, but no solution. I found one thread that mentioned these OTA updates fail if you have removed some system apps (which I have done to clear up more memory).
So basically what I want is this:
* As much as internal space as is possible, through the Link2SD app or some other way.
* A ROM with HTC Sense (including Sense widgets!), 3.5 preferred, but 2.1 is no problem.
* ROM stability is a must (I don't want my GF to come asking me for help with her phone all the time).
* A fast ROM would be nice too, so nothing too fancy but HTC Sense and overclockability.
My guess is that the newest stock ROM would be a good option, but if you have suggestions for a modified stock ROM or something completely different, let's hear it! As long as it has Sense and is fast enough (for Wildfire S means, duh, I know the phone is not top-notch). When I look at the Wildfire S INDEX thread, I'm overwhelmed with the number of options. I just don't know where to start and what makes a good ROM different from a mediocre one. FYI: we're dutch, so a dutch ROM would be nice, but no problem if it's not.
I rooted the phone a while back to be able to use Link2SD.

As you can see, the phone is S-OFF, which it was when it shipped. Is this normal? I found the phone being full of bloatware and ad-apps, which were easy to remove after the phone was rooted, but it makes me think I bought a stolen or modified Wildfire S. Doesn't matter now, most important are the steps I want to take now.
So what ROMs are good options for my needs (Sense + enough internal memory) and what steps do I have to take?
Thanks for your time and advice!
Download the full odex version of this rom(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1652973) .This rom is EXACTLY what you need.Leave the creator a thanks for his effort. The steps to install this rom are on the original post so don't worry. You won't have any problems.Best of luck
If you like complete stock experience, without any mods or anything.......use the latest European RUU,flash the DUST kernel by Einstein.frat(search it),create a 1GB EXT4 partition(you can make it bigger) on your SD Card via CWM recovery(backup before creating the partition since it formats your SD Card),Then flash the Data2sd package usually found in many Sense Rom's threads
This will give you 1 gigs of internal memory
To enhance the performance, use SDBooster from the market and select 1024 MB as the cache size
Let me know if it works out
And yeah it is GREAT that your wildfire s was shipped as S-OFF......wish I had that luck
Yeah you could do what the user above suggested but i was trying to save you the hassle.Just flash the rom i linked to above and you won't regret it!
How to RUU?

After taking a look at it I've come to the conclusion that it sounds as a fantastic ROM for my needs, apart from that it has no Sense widgets. Bummer, 'cause my GF wants to use some Sense widgets.

When I'm able to download it, will it be easy to install? I mean: are there basic instructions inside the .exe or do I need more knowledge to make it work?
Also, are there release notes on that ROM?
RUU mirror!
The RUU from the above-mentioned thread won't download, FileFront says there's no bandwidth available, so no free download!
Someone must have downloaded is, so could they please upload it somewhere else? If you look at the above-mentioned thread, the last few posts mention the same problem, so it would be helpful to more people than just me if you upload the RUU somewhere else.
This is the RUU I'm talking about:
RUU_Marvel_S_HTC_Europe_2.26.401.3_Radio_47.23e.35 .3038H_7.57.39.10M_release_261695_signed.exe
Thanks in advance!
Whoohoo, finally: downloading it now at a lousy 50 kBps on average.
RUU'd, now trying to root again
RUU applied. Bootloader unlocked. Now trying to root again!
Rooting using Supertool does not work due to read-only errors. Don't know why, but I'm trying to fix this. I need to flash a new recovery too.
I will update when I have made more progress!

Use UnlockRoot. Works for me. All you need is adb and drivers installed.
Go here to get it: UnlockRoot
Rooted, now restoring backup

Thanks, but I already flashed the CWM based recovery and rooted.
Now I'm restoring the backups I've made using Titanium. I've never done this before, so anything I sould look out for?
I'm using Link2SD. Would restoring the entire backup (140 steps) at once do any good, or would it be wise to do it in smaller steps, so Link2SD can link files to the SD-ext partition?
Hello everyone,
so for the past 3 years I've been using CM7 on my HTC Desire Z (permanently rooted, S-OFF), but lately it got rather slow sometimes.
So I came to the conclusion: "Why not do a complete overhaul and do it right this time?" (when I've rooted it first, I didn't know about the whole wide wonderful world of xda )
As a base for that, I currently have 4Ext Recovery 2.4.6b with CyanogenMod 7.2.0 (stable), the mentioned S-OFF, hboot 0.84.2000 (PC1011000) and Radio 26.03.02.26_M (information from bootloader)
I'm gonna start with a backup of my current ROM obviously, the question is: What's next?
1. My conclusion was that updating the bootloader would be the first step.
Will upgrading my bootloader (to, say, hboot 0.85.0013, still trying to find it) give me any advantages or will it be more of a hassle?
2. Next up imo would be to see, if I can somehow optimize the partitioning of my internal storage (I've read of people running into trouble when trying to flash gapps, some partition size was too small)
Is there any way to do that or would it have any useful effect except for the gapps-problem (which I only found on KitKat-ROM threads)
3. Third step would be to flash recovery (will probably be necessary after re-partitioning). I'll choose 4EXT again.
B]4.[/B] Next in line would be flashing my new ROM: Alterndromadus CM 10.1 (shouldn't be much of a problem when the rest, including works correctly I guess)
5. After I've done that, I'd like to flash a new kernel (battery+speed improvements). I'm not sure though if I do that before or after flashing the ROM.
6. Next up is installing Xposed Framework (with XPrivacy) and one kind of "supercharger" (this or this )
Here I'd like to ask if they somehow interfere with each other the bad way.
?. One thing that I have left out and don't really know where to put them are radios.
My current one 26.03.02.26_M works rather fine, but I think there's some more potential to it (be it reception or battery life) with an updated one (preferable the newest).
Are those carrier-specific or can I use them with any carrier whereever I go? (o2 in Germany, just so you know)
I know this is a lot I'm asking but maybe this could be a help for anyone who wants to optimize his phone's performance.
All contributions are greatly appreciated!
If you want a different kernel you need to flash it after flashing the ROM. Also the problem about internal storage and GApps: as long as you flash the right hboot you should be fine, basically you need to flash the Desire Z hboot which gives you a bigger system parition (because the Desire Z had Sense which was bigger than AOSP which came on the G2) and you'll be set. I won't tell you how to do everything here, just find the appropriate guides for what you want to do here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2348266 I personally wouldn't recommend any "performance" scripts but it's up to personal choice... if you think it makes your device better due to better multitasking or even just placebo then no-one's stopping you. Just be warned that I've discovered that most of the time those scripts make you think your device is faster just by disabling transition animations....
