[Q] Should I s-off my phone? - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a HTC Desire, (PVT4 SLCD, Erasesize 40000)
I have rooted my phone for almost 4 months. I already know a lot about flashing etc, but never researched s-off. It seems kind of risky to me, as i have the latest desire. Correct me if i'm wrong. I have a few questions.
1.Is it worth to s-off my device
2.If so why?
3.How big is the chance of bricking my phone
4.If i s-off which rom should i be on, as i saw that heavy sense 3.0 roms can make it difficult, AOSP like oxygen or just stock 2.2
Thanks in advance.

1. Yes
2. you can modify system files while booted, not just via ADB. Also you can change HBOOT partitions - so you can use the NAND memory efficiently.
3. If you follow all instructions for the procedure, then there is 1% chance of bricking it. just stick to the info/guide.
4. Some of those ROMs do have problems with s-off. I managed to S-OFF mine on insertcoin's Froyo data++ ROM (2.0.1). But literally most of the ROMs should work. I'd go with something lighter with - e.g. CM7/MIUI/Redux/GV/Oxygen

I'm going to try it today, i think..
Wish me luck

re 4.
after you're done with S-OFF you can run your favourite ROM again, it is just that while you're doing this, you need a "simple ROM". what I did:
* nandroid backup (so you keep your favorite ROM, settings etc)
* flash pre-rooted stock ROM
* S-OFF your device
* nandroid restore (restore the backup you made before).
hope this helps.

With revolutionary one will get rooted and s-off in step.
Swyped from Oxygen with Transparent XDA App

You can follow this guide at http://wiki.rootzwiki.com/index.php/HTC_Desire for S-OFFing with Revolutionary. It's better detailed than Revolutionary's own wiki.
You may not have to do the Installing Superuser and su step if you're rooted already, mine stayed rooted when I S-OFF'd today.
Big advantage of S-OFFing is I could start using the Oxygen r2 HBOOT from Alpharev.nl site, making the system partition drastically smaller (250mb is wasted space for custom roms that aren't bloated Sense) that way I could use more of /Data for apps. It's apparently better for battery life not having apps load off the sdcard with the various apps2sd and dalvik2sd workarounds when using an sd-ext partition.
I did need to move fastboot.exe to the folder adb.exe is in in order to flash a new partition image (instructions on alpharev.nl; scroll down to "modified partition tables") as I got an error about AdbWinApi.dll being missing. They've changed things around in the Android SDK installer so adb.exe needs an additional download via SDK Manager.
p.s. Also I restored my backup of Sense before S-OFFing, just to be on the safe side, Alpharev.nl recommended this but the other guides made no mention of it. It was probably best as my current ROM, Oxygen, has apps2sd implemented and apparently this can interfere with the flashing process.

Another thing, i don't have time this week because of a wedding, but is it crucial to make a nandroid as i can't restore one(amonra 2.0.0), i'll try revolutionary when i do it.

[Q] Flashing a ROM, it's been a while...

Hi, I have posted this before but it got deleted because I very stupidly posted it in the wrong place.
My question has been answered before due to searching but no one else happens to be in my EXACT situation and I don't want to mess up my phone.
Basically my Desire HD is rooted etc and I want to flash the Android Revolution ROM, but I havent flashed any ROM's since my OLD G1 and now everyone talks about S-OFF etc and I don't understand these, on my G1 it was simply rooting and flashing a Recovery and then flashing a ROM, so basically what do I need to flash this ROM
My situation:
I am running the stock ROM (permroot on 1.32.405.6)
I have stock radio
I have Clockwork mod 3.0.0.6
and Buzz Sense 1.3 + OC (OC'd 1.6Ghz) kernel.
(+Ever since I downgraded from 1.72 I have lost wi-fi, it connected to my wi-fi but I get no internet access through it, its definitely a problem with the phone and nothing else because I have tested my router etc, all my other devices have connectivity through my router)
We all were in your exact situation. The Desire HD employs an extra level of security to prevent users messing with their handsets, S-ON.
You need to turn this off, Ideally ENG (Engineering) S-OFF, before you can make persistent changes to your system.
Have a read through the very helpful guides in the Dev section. They also contain the tools you need. Turning S-OFF should be a one time process only, i.e once you've done it there is no need to repeat it to flash another ROM.
Hope that helps.

Sorry I forgot to mention that I have SHIP S-OFF and I'm unable to get ENG S-OFF because when I used the Easy S-OFF tool it can only give me SHIP S-OFF for some reason, I cant do anything now since its incompatible with my kernel as well. Can I flash a ROM with just SHIP S-OFF? I don't want to flash any radios because I bricked my G1 about 4 million times when flashing radios.
It you run a 1.32 WWE RUU and revert back to stock you can then reapply ENG S-OFF. A bit of a ball ache I know.
Most ROMs will work just fine with SHIP S-OFF but ENG is usually preferred.
To flash a radio you need Radio S-OFF another beast entirely. However there is a very good too to do it with. No bricks so far and your DHD will then have super CID and be SIM unlocked.

Just tick the "I have radio s-off" box and it becomes compatible with everything.
follow my guide in the sig and skip to eng s-off and radio s-off part, or skip to whatever comes next if you've already done them
Tried that, I get a "Connection Error", I have made sure its fully connected as "Disk Drive" and I allow the Super User request when I do it, but it still doesn't work, plus the radio tool just says "Incompatible kernel" - or something like that.
I mainly want to know, can I flash Android Revolution in my current situation, can I flash with just SHIP S-OFF and my current kernel, or do I have to go back to stock kernel, flash the ROM and then flash my kernel back?
and why should I have ENG S-OFF, if it makes a lot of difference I will give it ago, but I mainly want to just flash this ROM to see if it fixes my wifi issue and my camera doesn't drop so many frames! (known issue in 1.32, fixed in 1.7X)
Disk Drive. Yeah, read the guide again more carefully, mate... And change the tool, why are you using easy radio tool!? It won't give you ENG S-OFF. My ENG S-OFF tool will give you that. And it most definitely will not say incompatible kernel if you just tick the box I talked about.
You can flash ARHD now. Do not mess around with it's kernel after flashing, because it comes with the best kernel out there. The kernel has been made to fit ARHD's needs.

I get the same as every other time, downloads the Easy S-OFF tool, "Pushing stuff to SD" Phone says "Unknown has been granted su access" and then the tool says "Error: Connection Problem!" - I get this every time, I have tried re-downloading this software every time, removing the "Unknown" in super user and then re-allowing it when it asks, I still get the same error...
Does it matter that I'm using Windows 7 64-bit?
EDIT: I think I've done it now, I downloaded the latest 2.3 SDK (I had 2.2) which updated my ADB drives, I didn't get the error this time, will boot into H-BOOT and check now.
Are you still using that disk drive mode? Because you should not.
THANKS
I have thanked everyones post, I can confirm my H-BOOT Now says PVT ENG S-OFF, one last thing, I'm all good to flash now? I can just put the ROM (sense version) on my SD card and flash it in CWM, with my current kernel, even though it will over write it with the one included for Android Revolution, I dont have to go back to stock kernel or anything first right?
Thanks again
Have you flashed ClockworkMod Recovery yet? If not download ROM Manager from the Market and flash it from there.
Once that is complete, download ROM, put on SD Card, Recovery, Wipe, Flash, Enjoy.

Desire root question ?

Hi,
soon, I will get my ordered HTC Desire from Amazon Germany. Hope it's not a Desire with Hboot Version > 0.92. Amazon descriped it as an Android 2.1 version. Is it possible that Android 2.1 comes with a non rootable bootloader > 0.93, worst case version 1.06 ?
For example. Hope I will get a Desire with a 0.92 Hboot and root it successfully, what will happen when the phone is rebooting. Is it updating automatically to Android 2.2 after it get connected and maybe lost the root access. Have read about this in some boards.
I think I have to flash a custom rom after rooting the device before I go online? Maybe these questions are stupid but I need to know the right steps to get the full potential out of my new phone.
Which custom rom is preferable? LeeDrOiD V3.0.2, CyanogenMod-7 ..?
Thank you in advance

I got a Desire with HBOOT 0.93, I can assure you it is completely rootable, I rooted with unrEVOked and the 1st ROM I tried was StarBurst, very awesome ROM.
I assume you want a gingerbread ROM, thus your asking for a deciding factor between CyanogenMod7 Or LeeDrOid 3.0.2, my advice is this if you like Sense UI, LeeDrOid if you don’t CyanogenMod7.
Check out Desire Android Development and check out the other options available.
Hope This Helps
1.06? Where did that come from? As far as I'm aware at least the bootloader only goes up to 0.93.1 which is prob rootable and S-Offable. If you do have a stupid bootloader, just use an RUU then root but I doubt you will have to worry about it. You will be fine. All you need to do is you can update from Eclair to Froyo and then root, it does not matter at all. Also, when I got my phone with Eclair, it came with bootloader 0.80.
You are worrying for no reason. All you need is to just download Unrevoked, the lastest one (if that doesn't work get the previous version). Don't forget the drivers either if your on Windows
1.06 bootloaders are only on CDMA Desires, not GSM. So far, all GSM Desires are rootable.
Is there a way to root with a 1.06 bootloader?
Sent from my PB99400 using XDA App
Not yet. Follow Unrevoked's site, they'll put up an update if possible.

That's my fear that I could get a Desire Phone from the stock that has this 1.06 bootloader. I read about it in some other forums that Desires are delivered with this newer bootloader, maybe htc did that to prevent (for a while) such rooting and flashing custom roms?
My Desire is on way now, hope I will get a rootable device tomorrow. As far as I know, I need to do the following
1. Unrevoke the Desire with linux or windows. I use linux.
2. Load a custom rom
How can I backup the entire image that comes out of the box before I start to root the desire ?

You don't need to worry to receive CMDA Desire with 1.06 unless you are from the USA If you are from Europe you should deffinitely be ok
And you don't need to backup too, you can later flash official RUUs, the original Desire firmware...you can however use the nandroid backup once you root your phone, to backup your current rom if you deceide to test a new one
I'm relieved to hear that. I've only one question about the roms. I want to flash a fast and stable rom that don't need app2sd to move application to the sd card. I think it's integrated in rom version > 2.1 (froyo) ?

IMO, you shouldn't even be thinking about rooting until you know what you're doing. Sounds like you don't know a lot about Android at present so read a lot and ONLY ASK QUESTIONS IF YOU CAN'T FIND AN ANSWER. Chances are everything you will need to ask has already been answered
Just enjoy the phone first and worry about the rest later

I have the same HBoot and am rooted
You've not got full root or else it would be S-Off. Have you flashed a recovery? Easiest way to get a nandroid back up. Either AmonRa 2.0.1 or CWM 2.5.1.8 (I think, other earlier version don't work with your HBoot, and stay away from 3.0.0.5 for now). Then you need to alpharev to get S-Off. Troll the forum you can find all this info, but you do have to go cautiously with this HBoot, only specific methods work imo.
AmonRa 2.0.1 | PVT4 40000 S-Off Alpharev 1.8| HBoot 0.93.1000 | Radio 5.17.05.08 | LeeDroid 3.0.2 (A2SD) | HTC Desire A8181 | UOT Kitchen Mods
Hi ghalalb,
now, I successful restored the nandroid backup with the installed clockwork mod 2.5.0.7. Vol - and Powerbutton, switch to Recovery, then clockwork mod came up .. restore, reboot, ok.
The Desire is alive. Is it real rooted (or not ) ? Thats the question ? The supervisor icon is available. First, I saved the content from the original sd card with (clockwork mod an backups), then partitioned the card with gparted to 2,2 GB fat32, 1,5 ext4 and restored the content back to the fat32 partition.
What now ? Is it not possible to flash a custom rom like clock hd-v10 with the installed clockwork mod ? Do I need to change the clockwork mod with AmonRa 2.0.1 ? The nandroid backups are not compatible with the AmonRa tool !
If something goes wrong, a restore of the old clockwork mod backups is not possible. I don't know what I have to do now. I don't want to make a mistake that is not reversible.
Regards
Frank
Hi Frank
You seem to be confusing your self as you don’t really know much about what your getting your self into. If you root your device with unrEVOked it should by default install clockwork recovery, once this is installed you don’t need Amon RA as a recovery as clockwork does the same thing and it is merely a matter of preference. Clockwork recovery backups cant be restored with Amon RA and vice versa. I am using clockwork recovery and I flash a new ROM every 3 to 4 days just to try different things and to see which ROM does what I need it to do. I usually end up back on ReflexTSense as I feel this ROM suits my user needs.
You seem to be getting used to using recovery and flashing ROM’s, you can use clockwork to flash any ROM. You have partitioned your card correctly and for apps to SD so now all you need to do is flash a ROM.
I recommend you try AuraxTSense as a first ROM, its very stable and blazing fast.
After you download the ROM put it in the root of your SD, the root of you SD means, not in a folder just in the SD when you double click on the removeable disc/SD in my computer (don’t know what its called in linux) that is the root of the SD. Once that is does, reboot your device into recovery, make a nandroid backup of your current working ROM.
Then follow the steps
• Go to wipe data/factory reset – select using trackball and let it do its thing
• Go to install zip from sdcard – select using trackball
• Go to toggle signature verification – select using trackball – NOTE: on your screen it should say “Signature Check: Disabled – If its says enabled make sure it says Disabled
• Go to choose zip from sdcard – select using trackball
• Go to AuraxTSense – select using trackball
Now its going to install the ROM and once its done its going to bring you back to a screen that says “reboot system now” - select using trackball. Don’t worry about installing the latest radio as your phone came with it installed.
Your phone should reboot and the ROM will now install and this take 5 to 12 mins before its complete if not just be patient, you know it has been a success when you get the white hTC screen with the with the green hTC logo followed by a white hTC screen with green dots that says “hTC quietly brilliant” in black it will sit on that screen for a while and the screen will go dull. When it is done the screen with go bright and boot into Android.
I hope this helps you to get your 1st ROM installed and running, I’ll check back every now and again and post your progress as I am committing my self to help you through this.
i am also going to buy a Desire, i would like to root it. so any hboot or android version should i be aware of? what should i look out for?
i am new in android so pardon my noob question.

[Q] Flashing custom ROM, cant root

Hello all,
I have decided to go ahead and flash a custom ROM without all the sense stuff on it. Not sure which one though.
Anyhow, I know that the fist step is to root. I tried to use the unrevoked way, but I cannot.
I have installed the drivers and the program finds it ok, but once the program makes my desire reboot, the desire just goes into a reboot loop!
I need to remove the battery to make it stop. Sometimes, even once it fully boots up, the phone reboots again while it is syncing itself!
Is there another way to root the phone for those of us with the random reboot problem?
Oh, I have the latest OTA update.
Here, grab the 3.21 version instead. It seems to work a lot better than newer versions.
Thanks. I will try that.
Do I really need this S-OFF stuff? I dont even really want the root, but as i understand it, I must have root to install one of the unofficial ROMS.
You have to ROOT in order to flash custom ROM's but S-OFF is not necessary, its for more advanced users.
When you download ROM of your like, be sure its made for Stock HBOOT (it should say in first post), if its for Oxygen or CM7 HBOOT then you need S-OFF and flash custom HBOOT or you will end up with bootloop.
S-Off isn't needed to run custom roms, just rooting is needed. S-Off is for those that want that extra and understand the consequencies of when something goes wrong.
sounds...complicated I was going to try Oxygen or CM7, or perhaps insertcoin.
roms apps2sd+ versions don't require s-off
insertcoin comes in two flavours if i read write - one for s-on (apps2sd stock hboot) and one for s-off (cm7 hboot)
It's not complicated. All you do is use a utility that you burn to a CD/USB and boot off of it. You go through the utility and it runs and unlocks your NAND. Simple.
The next stage after this is all done is to flash a custom hboot, this take little more than 5 mins to setup and takes about 1 min (less prob) to get it to flash fully.
People tend to say to avoid it if you don't know what your doing. The reason being is that during the process of S-Off'ing your device it requires a custom hboot being flashed. When flashing the custom hboot messes up then you **** your phone up basically and it will be completely bricked.
Well..I at least got the root part working. now I just need to figure out which ROM and HBOOT combo to go with.

Should I flash a new HBoot?

Hey, guys!
I'm considering whether or not I should flash the CM7r2 HBoot on my Desire. It's already S-Off, currently running coolexe's Cool3D Aces v3. As this will be my first time flashing a new HBoot, I have a couple of questions:
1. What are the advantages of flashing a different HBoot? I already know it changes the partitions layout, so I'll get more space for data/apps, but are there any other differences, like more stability/speed in CM7r2 ROM versions?
2. What's the easiest/safest way to flash? I plan on using the PB99IMG method or the Android Flasher as I'm not really familiar with adb commands and stuff.
3. I realize there's always a risk involved, but in the event that something goes wrong, will the phone be permanently bricked or is there still a chance I might be able to get it working again?
Sorry for the noob questions and thanks to anyone who takes the time to answer.
1)Most devs seem to use CM7r2 as their standard hboot of choice. So what you'll find is that there will be more rom's available for you to flash, giving you more choice of what you want. Another big advantage is that in most cases it'll save you from having to flash another stock hboot zip over the rom, which seems to be a way some devs overcome the stock hboot issue.
2)I have no clue how to use adb, but Android Flasher has always worked well for me, and as a bonus it's an easy way to flash splash screens, boot animations, radio's etc.
3)Like you said there's always a risk involved with messing with the systems in your phone. But your pretty much golden if you do your research before hand and follow the guides that have been posted (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1016084 is a good one).
And in the unlikely event that something does go wrong there's loads of great guys on here who can help with pretty much any problem.
1) Not for speed or stability, no
2) They're all easy. PB99IMG.zip is my least favourite as you have to remember to remove the zip from SD or you'll be prompted to install it again every time you go to hboot. I use fastboot commands (nothing to do with adb at all - See FAQ in my signature) and android flasher is just a gui for fastboot commands
3) Ensure you get and check the MD5 checksum of the hboot before flashing to ensure it matches. Dont do anything stupid like pulling power or connection whilst flashing and you should be fine. Flashing a corrupt Hboot can cause brick (all bricks are permanent, anything that calls itself a brick and is fixable is not a brick)

I rename them to like pb99img-stock.zip and pb99img-cm7.zip so that I don't get that prompt everytime I want to change, I just rename it back.... I find it the easiest method(probably because i was without pc for over a month ) but fastboot is the safest. Always double check (if not triple) the Md5
Ps. You can check it through phone too... Using hash Droid from the market

I Just flashed CM7r2 HBoot using PB99IMG.zip, worked like a charm in a matter of seconds, currently restoring ROM and apps
Sweet, it were the same for me
Im getting really used to this now

[Q] Complete noob humbly asking for help

Hey guys,
I've been around the Defy forum for quite a while now; however, my Desire is back from the dead and now my beloved
Motorola Defy is retired, which means that I'll be getting to know this forum instead!
Right now I have absolutely nothing. Just a TELUS Desire GSM on 2.2 stock froyo. Can someone point me in the right
direction for rooting and S-OFF? Do I need to unlock my bootloader as well for most ROMs?
I have this ROM in mind:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1980122
Everything is pretty straightforward except for a few things:
Someone PLEASE help me, but I'm not going to be demanding or anything. So help me if you can.
1. How the hell did you guys end up with, like, 10 different recoveries and HBOOTs? I've heard CM7R2, stock, Amon RA, among others.
Someone can clarify this?
2. I don't get the partition things at all. For the above ROM what do I need?
3. And just how to root and S-OFF and unlock BL if I need to...
4. A simple procedure for all this maybe?:silly:
5. A simple explanation on how HBOOT and recovery and custom recovery work? On the Defy, we had a 2nd-init and 2nd-boot that basically
launched a custom ROM and kernel on top of stock because the bootloader was locked down. The CWM recovery was accessible from the bootmenu, which was in turn launched by pressing volume-down at the blue LED halfway through boot.
6. Last and not most important does the ROM above (Cooldroid Revolution 9.0) have working Wifi? It says it's "fast, smooth and stable" but...
Thanks so much.
Soooo...
Welcome to the Desire forums.
You should start by ignoring anything that has to do with the Defy. You don't need to unlock the bootloader.
Now, let's start with s-off.
Follow this tutorial Long link, and ignore step 2.
After you're s-off, you should install 4ext recovery. It's the best recovery for the Desire.
In this guide, you will install 4ext, and create an ext partition on your sd-card. The partition is allocated for more internal memory (more apps).
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2125513
Read every guide carefully. You will learn a lot.
After you did those things, you can install a custom ROM. I don't recommend you use the one you mentioned as a daily one. It's still a work in progress, and has a lot of bugs.
There are many hboots. When you change hboot, you change the way the internal memory is partitioned.
For example, the cm7r2 hboot has a smaller system allocated space than the stock hboot.
You usually change hboots to get more app space.
Thanks!
But what about root? What tool should I use?
Edit: never mind, I saw the guide link in your signature
I'll get back to you when I'm done rooting. Fingers crossed.
You will root it when you either install a custom rom, or install the supersu zip.
So I read up on some guides that told me to use unrevoked, so I have this reflash_package.exe ready to go. I've uninstalled HTC sync because unrevoked tells me to.
Just one question: I can only use CWM recovery if using unrevoked? That's the default, and only recovery available with it. Can I just download the 4EXTRecoveryUpdater.apk later and change it to 4ext recovery?
If I end up somehow with a ROM that does not boot, how do I fix it? Flash an original RUU?
Why didn't you just listen to me? You don't need unrevoked.
Did you backup before flashing a rom? If you did, then restore it..
Flash another rom, or flash the 2.3 ruu.

I did it! Thank you so much for helping me, despite all my noobiness in this forum.
I'm running Cooldroid Revolution 9.0 now. Again, thanks so much. About 7 hours later after I started reading up
and working with my Desire, I've learned a lot of things about S-OFF and HBOOT and EXT4.
I did a nandroid backup of my original 2.2 ROM before I formatted my SD card and it's backed up on my new
fat32 and my desktop as well. I guess I'm safe for now.
Oh and one more thing, are RUUs like a last-ditch attempt to save your phone? I remember there was a 2.3 RUU upgrade
that came in the form of an .exe and you just needed to plug your phone in, the .exe would do all the upgrading stuff for you.
Yeah. Ruu's are usually the last things that can save your roms.
Even noobier
I am even more of a noob than anyone else I've seen on here.
I am a college student, and I'm considered the best programmer in my class, so I was hired by my school to develop a mobile app for the admissions department. One of my classmates already developed one for apple, but he graduated, so my job is to create one for Android. They are fully aware that mobile app development is not taught here, and none of the people I will be working with knows anything about it either, so it is going to be interesting, to say the least.
My best language is C#, so Java should be no problem, but I am completely at a loss as to where to start. All the app development information I've been able to find is geared toward Ice Cream Sandwich, but I want to make sure my app works on Gingerbread because of its huge market share, plus anything newer.
I've looked at the "beginners" threads on here but I don't understand even half of what people are saying (I speak geek but it's a completely different dialect lol). Is there a resource somewhere where a good C#, Visual Basic, and SQL programmer can teach herself something completely new, and do it right?
Try this guide:

Thanks, I will look into that
