[Q]Help from people who know things ;) ROM question - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

A friend of mine has an EVO, I do not nor have I ever used an evo before. He wanted a custom ROM installed and asked me for help. I would greatly appreciate any help offered by the community.
1. What ROM is closest to stock(If gingerbread is out for it then a gingerbread build would be nice), just tweaked/debloated/deodexed/zip aligned etc.
2. How well is CM7 running on the EVO? I have a captivate and CM7 right now is pretty unstable this is going to be his main ROM and he isnt too technical.
3. What rom has a good/easy update flow. Maybe something with rom manager where he can just click update and all is well in the world.
Thank you SO much in advance.

There are plenty of stock roms and there is a couple gingerbread floating around somewhere i believe as well so your winning on that.
Cm7 i believe is very stable rom and many people enjoy it. Not me but people really enjoy cyanogens work.

Food for the thought process:
Root..in case you haven't done it already and still can:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=838448
In my opinion..best option for stock Rom to flash when rooted:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1120840
As far as the one click auto update option...you know what your getting yourself into right (as far as setting it up for your friend and then walking away)...lol.

Lol yeah I'm sure he will end up calling me about it. Thanks for the links I'll check them out. If the ROM I put on there us stable enough then he won't have to update.

Flashing a Custom (even stock) Rom and then not wanting to update to the latest and greatest...ya....ok....NOT. Your friend will get a taste of what this is like and BOOM...hooked. The Rom I linked has a great OP in support. Enjoy the fun that you already know is gonna take hold of the phone your about to set free!
EDIT: Thought I'm sure this goes without saying, but will do anyway. Remind them......DO NOT...accept OTA updates even if they can...just sayin..lmao

CM7 or Death! I played with a lot of Sense roms for quite a while, but I determined they are nothing but bloat. CM7 is superfast, and I couldn't ask for much more in stability.
I'm Running Nightly 93 and May gapps.

I'm glad to hear its stable. If he is willing to give up sense and cm is stable then I might encourage him that way.
How is the battery life and do you have access to 4g speeds?
Also I have seen the new sense on the sensation... Man if its bloat its the sexiest bloat I have ever seen.

Gingerbread on rooted phone

I assume you haven't rooted?
You'd have to flash (install) a ROM that's based off of Gingerbread. Right now, there are only two or three of those
I have rooted & flashed myns warm. that's what I'm worried about..or my question I guess. How would I get gingerbread on my rooted phone.

Like would I update through Sprint or is it something I have to do manually?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Manually or wait until they push it out officially.
Using my HTC Evo phone which I'm using Xda app to post
At the moment you would have to do it manually. As far a I am aware the few roms that are available are not yet completely stable, and not all the features are working. Cyanogen is working on CM7/gingerbread, but has not released a build. Sounds like they're getting close though, as he tweeted he's using it as his daily driver.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
there are 3 Gingerbread ROMs in the Android Development forum thus far. They're all in Alpha or early Beta forms currently, and for most people are not stable or feature-full enough to be daily users.
If you're new to rooting I'd shy away from flashing experimental Alpha builds unless you're ready for some troubleshooting. It might be in your best interest to wait until they are more general public ready.
If you are interested, here are the links to the 3 I'm aware of:
Comes tweaked so far. Not really stock:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=878020
Pretty much stock:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=877653
Pretty much stock as well:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=881557
I've personally used the 2nd and 3rd. Both worked for me but not without some issues for sure.
Oh and no matter what, get very familiar with recovery and NAND BACKUPS (nandroid). Especially when trying these alpha roms, get used to backing up your working roms and restoring them.
Everyone is so helpful but I'm not trying to do anything with my phone until it's officialy released. I just don't know how being rooted effects updating. I don't know if I'm wording this correctly...lol sorry
what my friend is trying to tell you sinse you are rooted you have to wait untill a rom w/ gingerbread on it which he provided some for you. and if you apply it manually you may be un-rooted then until unrevoke or others can break it .
Hi all
anyone know of a fully woking gingerbread rom at this point?

CM7 is the closest. Was using as a daily driver until yesterday to run Z3. Everything but 4g, which no GB rom has.
Check out the cyanogen forums for the latest nightly builds, and the CM7 thread in the general section for any Q's or info.

From captivate to evo

I'm switching phones to an evo... Does evo also use .apk as the application string? Or is it referred to something else here.. Getting ready to set up computer for the evo soon and curious to what is transferable to what I already have.....

You're welcome...and ehh...technically yes and no..
Yes-If you needed to go to stock, you'd have to download an RUU, to run the exe to revert to stock
No-you really "technically" don't have to use a computer to get roms, because you can use rom manager premium [like 4/5$] and you can download from there. I personally find it easy using the computer though. The same for kernels, download the kernel, radio, ect, then put it on your sd, once that is done, boot into recovery and flash each, separately.

No problem. And it should be the same method, how you flashed roms, kernels, apks, ect. Just now you just need to make sure when you flash like a splash image, ect, to make sure its a PC36IMG zip [for the evo].

There are a plethora of ROMs available. It depends on your taste, if you prefer AOSP or if you want a Sense based ROM. Myn's, MikFroyo's, and Calkulin's are the 3 sense ROMS I use most frequently, and they are all fast and stable, just themed different. AOSP based ROMS you have CM, Evervolv, Liquid, MIUI...there really are a bunch, and everyone I've tried has been stable. You'll just have to go on a flashing binge for a week or two and see what suits you best! Kernels, there are tons of kernels as well. Lots of them. Lots and lots.

i went from a captivate to evo as well. agree with k2buckley on roms. regarding kernels, i would first start looking at roms then after deciding on one, go from there. you'll probably wanna read up on the thread to see if the developer recommends a specific kernel and which ones are most compatible with their rom. i personally recommend any of the netarchy ones, but it's up to you and you'll have to choose which build best fits your needs.

some good info & downloads but take the benchmarks numbers here with a grain of salt

anytime. im a long time reader, first time poster. thats what separates xda from all the other forums; a genuine community willing to help each other out w/o bashing and a minimal amount of the oh so common "use the search button" response, when that person could have easily just provided a link to the OP's question. considering the vast amount of search results, its hard to find a definitive answer w/o reading every damn thread related to the topic.
even tho im rather new to the rom scene, that is the sole reason i feel the least i can do is try to share the small amount of info or advice i have acquired from reading the forums and personal experience and give back to the community.

[Q] Another Question By A Noob!

Hey guys! I figured you guys can help me out with this question.
I'm considering rooting my phone but I don't really want any custom ROMs. I'm happy with my current theme. I can already tether.
All I really want to do is root and have a move to sd enabler (for those pesky apps that are really cool, kind of big and don't have the move to sd enabled) and freeze my bloatware.
Can I root my phone JUST to do this without changing ROMs?
Can I root my phone and still get updates on my current ROM?
Thanks for your time and your patience with this noob.

Root your phone and flash sprint lovers rom. Or any 2.2 sense rom still lets you update. Plus you get to remove bloatware and look into other kernels that could give you better speed/battery. Why root and not change roms?

We're all here to help you bud, no worries. The sprint lovers rom is pretty much just a stock rooted rom with the normal sprint goodies with nothing removed along with a few extra tweaks. The rom is great and sounds about what youre looking for. If you search around the development section you can find really easy methods to root your phone and the sprint lovers thread is also there. I would link it up for you but I'm on my phone not home yet. But ill edit this post and link it up for you check back in like 30 mins. Rooting is very easy now a days and so is flashing. As long as you read first you should be fine. The only people who screw things up are people who don't read or research. If you need anything just pm me ill help you. Good luck

hey bro, yes you can root and keep the stock one, but remember IMPORTANT, dont accept sprint OTA updates they will unroot you, also you should consider titanium backup after you root it is usefull for freezing those sprint apps and keep them out of the way.
then try any app2sd of your choice, good luck
and if you ever decide to try roms, is not that hard and instructions aren't that hard my favorite sense rom is azrael xv4 very stable good battery life.

no prob, anytime man.
I just went through this earlier this week. Some of the rooting techniques require you to wipe your phone or flash a rom like sprint lovers, but if you just want root, I used unrevoked. quick and painless, took less than 15 minutes.
Unrevoked will do a lovely job for you, no confusing instructions or mess required. At that point, you can keep your phone on the stock ROM. Rooting does not change your ROM, it just turns the security off so that you have the freedom to do so.
There are many really nice ROMs out there and kernels that will provide better performance and substantially improved battery life.
It's at least worth the research, even if you stick with stock.

You will not be able to accept OTA updates from Sprint while rooted, at risk of losing root, perhaps permanently until someone finds another workaround to exploit.
Most people just wait until their favorite ROM developer releases the new Sprint base.

New OTA update and root...

I caught wind that VZW is going to put out 2.3 OTA update soon, so here's my question.
If I'm rooted, but still on the stock Rom, which I have to put it back to, everything stock except for "root" and radio version, will the OTA update unroot my phone, or in any way mess anything up?
I will unroot it myself and put EVERYTHING back completely stock if I have to, but I'm not ready to give up the ability to WiFi tether my phone with my xbox to run xbox live.

Most likely the update will break root. Most do. But generally given a few days to a couple of weeks there is a new root method

I don't think there are any legit sense roms built 2.3 yet. So we are forced to wait
Does anybody else think that the 2.3 ota is gonna come with Sense 2.0?

[ROM][TEST][SENSE]Stock/Deodexed/Zipaligned Stock ROM

Most of you guys probably only want AOSP, but for those of you with extra time on your hands and with nothing else to do I present to you my first ROM, built from Shipped ROM.
The ROM is completely zipaligned, deodexed, and most Verizon Bloatware apk.s are removed. If there are any remaining, please let me know in the comments.
This should be one of the fastest Stock ROMs available. I know other people may have created the same kind of ROM, but please, don't flame on me.
Of course, this ROM still runs Android 2.2.1, however I hope to update that in future test version, as well as AOSP.
I also must warn you, the file size is a gigantic 240MB. If all goes well with this test ROM, AOSP will be next
