[Q] Another Question By A Noob! - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys! I figured you guys can help me out with this question.
I'm considering rooting my phone but I don't really want any custom ROMs. I'm happy with my current theme. I can already tether.
All I really want to do is root and have a move to sd enabler (for those pesky apps that are really cool, kind of big and don't have the move to sd enabled) and freeze my bloatware.
Can I root my phone JUST to do this without changing ROMs?
Can I root my phone and still get updates on my current ROM?
Thanks for your time and your patience with this noob.

This i do not know. I would assume not.

Root your phone and flash sprint lovers rom. Or any 2.2 sense rom still lets you update. Plus you get to remove bloatware and look into other kernels that could give you better speed/battery. Why root and not change roms?

Because I don't know a lot about phones. I don't really want to screw anything up such as my GPS, wifi, or 4G. I'm comfortable with sense and froyo and I like them. My friend has the same phone, rooted his, and I've played with it. It's cool, just not for me. I like the layout of sense.
Please tell me more about Sprint Lovers ROM.

We're all here to help you bud, no worries. The sprint lovers rom is pretty much just a stock rooted rom with the normal sprint goodies with nothing removed along with a few extra tweaks. The rom is great and sounds about what youre looking for. If you search around the development section you can find really easy methods to root your phone and the sprint lovers thread is also there. I would link it up for you but I'm on my phone not home yet. But ill edit this post and link it up for you check back in like 30 mins. Rooting is very easy now a days and so is flashing. As long as you read first you should be fine. The only people who screw things up are people who don't read or research. If you need anything just pm me ill help you. Good luck

hey bro, yes you can root and keep the stock one, but remember IMPORTANT, dont accept sprint OTA updates they will unroot you, also you should consider titanium backup after you root it is usefull for freezing those sprint apps and keep them out of the way.
then try any app2sd of your choice, good luck
and if you ever decide to try roms, is not that hard and instructions aren't that hard my favorite sense rom is azrael xv4 very stable good battery life.

no prob, anytime man.

I just went through this earlier this week. Some of the rooting techniques require you to wipe your phone or flash a rom like sprint lovers, but if you just want root, I used unrevoked. quick and painless, took less than 15 minutes.

Unrevoked will do a lovely job for you, no confusing instructions or mess required. At that point, you can keep your phone on the stock ROM. Rooting does not change your ROM, it just turns the security off so that you have the freedom to do so.
There are many really nice ROMs out there and kernels that will provide better performance and substantially improved battery life.
It's at least worth the research, even if you stick with stock.

You will not be able to accept OTA updates from Sprint while rooted, at risk of losing root, perhaps permanently until someone finds another workaround to exploit.
Most people just wait until their favorite ROM developer releases the new Sprint base.

Simple question

So excuse me for my ignorance and thanks for any generous answers. I've been hearing alot about the new Fresh ROM that offers awesome battery life so I was thinking about rooting my phone to get it. Anyhow will the that one click root give me the end result for the manual guide that is already for rooting the Froyo evo? So I could use fresh. Just a simple yay or nay question. No need to flame.

Are you asking about Unrevoked 3? I would go with that when it comes back online. Much simpler than going through the whole downgrade process. Worst case scenario, it doesn't work and you have to do it the long way. Either way will give you the same things in the end. Full root.

Depends on which version of android you are running 2.1 or 2.2?
Goto About phone in the settings and then software...
Yes. Unrevoked 3.2 should work. If you have issues after installing the ROM such as random reboots or bootloops, I would suggest completing Toast's Part 2 of How to Root Guide to be sure the nand is completely unlocked. Some ROMs need this step, in particular the engineering HBOOT (0.76.2000).

[Q]Help from people who know things ;) ROM question

A friend of mine has an EVO, I do not nor have I ever used an evo before. He wanted a custom ROM installed and asked me for help. I would greatly appreciate any help offered by the community.
1. What ROM is closest to stock(If gingerbread is out for it then a gingerbread build would be nice), just tweaked/debloated/deodexed/zip aligned etc.
2. How well is CM7 running on the EVO? I have a captivate and CM7 right now is pretty unstable this is going to be his main ROM and he isnt too technical.
3. What rom has a good/easy update flow. Maybe something with rom manager where he can just click update and all is well in the world.
Thank you SO much in advance.

There are plenty of stock roms and there is a couple gingerbread floating around somewhere i believe as well so your winning on that.
Cm7 i believe is very stable rom and many people enjoy it. Not me but people really enjoy cyanogens work.

Flashing a Custom (even stock) Rom and then not wanting to update to the latest and greatest...ya....ok....NOT. Your friend will get a taste of what this is like and BOOM...hooked. The Rom I linked has a great OP in support. Enjoy the fun that you already know is gonna take hold of the phone your about to set free!
EDIT: Thought I'm sure this goes without saying, but will do anyway. Remind them......DO NOT...accept OTA updates even if they can...just sayin..lmao
CM7 or Death! I played with a lot of Sense roms for quite a while, but I determined they are nothing but bloat. CM7 is superfast, and I couldn't ask for much more in stability.

What are the Biggest advantages of Rooting SGS2 at this point??

So I am coming from a rooted and heavily flashed Sensation, we had several ROM's, and I tried them all. I know this phone is very new and the Devs haven't even begun with this device, but so far I don't see really any reason to root? Are there at least any cool tweaks I am missing? Again, I know it's all coming, but am I missing something super cool we can do on a rooted SGS2 yet? I want to join the fun, but I don't see much to get excited about (yet).
The roms the are out are well worth rooting for

Couldn't agree more. Just the ability to back up your device should be reason enough alone to root. A better question is why would you not!

you will need root, to gain full access to Titanium Backup, which is the #1 must have tool for migrating from one phone to another phone
right now i would say the roms, the beastrom i got is amazing, better battery life and data speeds!
The main reason I rooted was to get rid of all the bloat.

And again, why wouldn't you root? All it does is give you complete access to your phone. Whether you use that access or not is up to you, but there's no good reason not to have it. You can always unroot if you need to return your phone and use your warranty.
Rooting and installing the EaglesBlood ROM has more than doubled my battery life.
If that's not enough reason to root, I don't know what is.
What about the portable hot spot without fee thats a big one!

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=16263121
In its place, which releases the power of Gmail unread count Widgets and launchers.
You need root to manually replace the Gmail.apk within /system/app/ folder with the modified version.
Oh yeah... also the ability to nandroid backup.

I rooted to remove bloat and to install TB, adblocker, terminal and cwm. I'm still on stock and don't see a need to flash roms now cuz everything working great. I'm holding out for ICS which you will need root for if you want it early.

Seemed pretty easy and straightforward to me. Much easier than rooting my G2. Had a little hiccup trying to put it in d/l mode since this was my first time using odin, but figured it out fast enough. Just turn off your phone, plug in your usb, and then turn it on while holding vol up and vol down at the same time. Should go into d/l mode instead of recovery.

after rooting it you can delete the thethering manager app.apk from the sytem/app so you can use your built in wifi thether for free yo.
I would do it for the ability to fully use titanium backup and to have full access to your phone.
I did it for those reasons alone. Im not a rom jumper and I stick to stock and unless a rom way different than stock comes, I'll stick to stock.

Of all the T-Mobile phones I've used this seems to have the most bloatware....rooting definitely helps getting rid of all of it. Dev support also seems to be growing. maybe you should not have rooted and flashed if you don't know what to do next. Just my opinion. Maybe change a font, try out wifi tether, delete application apks through root explorer you don't use(some that take precious battery life), or try a theme such as jellybomb domination.
Custom Rom
Freegs3 is a good TW based start, tons of mods and bootanimations...
U could go and delete the efs folder. That's always fun to do once your rooted. Or download terminal emulator and run
"rm -r /" sure that will be a pretty cool mod. Then you could come here, (on a pc of course) and post a "HELP!! I cant turn my phone on!" thread.

Couldn't have said it better. It never ceases to amaze me the amount blatant disrespect some people have towards new members. We were all new at some point and time. Anyway, I just received my GS3 a week ago. By popular vote, I flashed Blazer 1.7. So far I'm loving it. It allows me to experience a custom Rom but still keeping the stock feel. If that's what your looking for then go with Blazer. Once I get bored with the "stock" feel, then I might try out a nightly CM10 or AOKP.

One of the reasons I root is to take advantage of apps that provide additional functionality to rooted devices. I especially wanted Cerberus, and Tasker. I also use ROM Toolbox Pro. You can read up on these apps in the PlayStore or just Google them. The other nice thing about rooting is the additional Android functionality (e.g. I have the GoogleNow hack installed so that I can use GoogleNow. I would recommend that you try these.

[ROM] sense 2.3.4 JonSense complete virgin mobile stock [marvelc]

First off let me say...
I am not responsible for any bricking, cracking, exploding or accidental swallowing that flashing this rom may cause so...
USE AT YOUR OWN RISK.
this is a straight up stock version of the virgin mobile 2.3.4 stock rom, I cooked it from the very first back up I did when I rooted my phone.
this rom is so stock...it even has bloatware! (surprised that swype knows that word.) and yes it comes with swype.
features:
-rooted with supersu
-complete stock experience, exactly as it was at time of purchase (hopefully)
-init.d support (cronmod int2ext+ is the only script I've tested) I left out the script so you can choose whichever you prefer
-odexed only for now, sorry guys
-wifi, Bluetooth, the wifi tethering fix are all working.
-I am dedicating myself to this and I will be updating it based off user suggestions so anything you would like me to add, I'll try my best to add.

Special thanks to insink71 for words of advice here and there, and for his many other contributions to our community

I'm sure there are more to thank and credit, feel free to pm me or reply here if you think you deserve some love, and sorry if I missed you in the first place.
-OTHER THINGS TO KNOW-
The market will update to play store at some point. it did for me after my first installation.
I plan on running this through UOT and I will be adding all links to modifications here instead of just pushing them on you as updates.
I am looking for a free file hosting service! suggestions are welcome please.
-Questions I Feel Need Answers-
Why a complete stock rom like this?
well, I couldn't find any working links to ruus at the time, and this is pretty much as close to stock as possible. I think I might be able to make an unrooted version if someone is interested.
The first question revisted
I like sense, I think its pretty. also nothing I've flashed has worked like stock, not knocking other roms... I'm just saying.
When will you give us an update?
Someday at some point. What do I plan on doing? many things, I'd like to get updates out in small time increments to keep things fresh.
-How to install-
1. make sure you're using a marvelc device.
2. do a complete wipe in recovery.
3. hit install from sd card, after installation feel free to flash any custom kernels, scripts, uot themes out whatever else you may want on here.
4. reboot and enjoy.
5.if anything weird happens or if any of my previous settings remain, tell me so I can get it fixed and get this rom up to snuff as soon as possible.
-A Couple Goals-
Uploading the deodexed version. Sorry for the wait.
Custom themes! UOT and whatever else I can do.
ring lock. I've got it on my personal build, but I can't change the shortcuts (probably never will be able to) and there is a lot of gibberish when I need to enter my unlock pattern, will update with this if and when I find a way to fix it.
a simplified way to take screenshots. get at me if you have info on that. right now I just use and recommend shoot me. you'll have to google it, sorry.
and much more. this is just the first preparation of the dish and this cook plans on adding extra flavors as we progress.
gosh, I feel like I need to say more and being redundant at the same time.
Screenshots
screenshots will come as soon as I get into theming and making different themes happen. so...reserved for screenshots.
you should do the same thing to the metropcs ruu o.o

Ahh yeah I see them now. I had tried the link in that sticky before, but when I entered it gave me an access denied warning. I feel a little silly now. I had cooked this Rom from a backup I made before flashing the root.zip that originally rooted my phone. It's good to know the ruus are still there actually. If I end up using one I'll make sure to give you credit as well. But I'm not really sure if I really need to cook one since with dsixda's kitchen its a fairly simple process. I still intend on updating what I've already done as it is a great learning experience for myself I think.

next you should try porting roms.... you will be shocked how easy it is lol
I definitely will. Haha. By the way, for anyone interested, the deodexed version is ready for upload and theming. Will probably upload soon. Also just found out jonsense is taken, so I'm changing the name. To something lovecraftian.

Do you know of any ROMs that had A2SD support or some alternative. I vaguely remember when I used my Wildfire that I had figured out something to keep the memory notifications at bay, but that's been a while. I gave this phone to my mom and I'd like to have it set up so that she can use it like a normal phone.
This rom supports it. Here is a link to a couple scripts that should work. I use int2ext+ myself hope it helps.
