Gingerbread on rooted phone - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok dumb question but how would you go about upgrading to gingerbread on a rooted phone?! I can't seem to find the answer anywhere & I'm scared when the time comes I won't know how.

I assume you haven't rooted?
You'd have to flash (install) a ROM that's based off of Gingerbread. Right now, there are only two or three of those

I have rooted & flashed myns warm. that's what I'm worried about..or my question I guess. How would I get gingerbread on my rooted phone.

Like would I update through Sprint or is it something I have to do manually?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App

Manually or wait until they push it out officially.
Using my HTC Evo phone which I'm using Xda app to post

At the moment you would have to do it manually. As far a I am aware the few roms that are available are not yet completely stable, and not all the features are working. Cyanogen is working on CM7/gingerbread, but has not released a build. Sounds like they're getting close though, as he tweeted he's using it as his daily driver.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App

there are 3 Gingerbread ROMs in the Android Development forum thus far. They're all in Alpha or early Beta forms currently, and for most people are not stable or feature-full enough to be daily users.
If you're new to rooting I'd shy away from flashing experimental Alpha builds unless you're ready for some troubleshooting. It might be in your best interest to wait until they are more general public ready.
If you are interested, here are the links to the 3 I'm aware of:
Comes tweaked so far. Not really stock:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=878020
Pretty much stock:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=877653
Pretty much stock as well:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=881557
I've personally used the 2nd and 3rd. Both worked for me but not without some issues for sure.
Oh and no matter what, get very familiar with recovery and NAND BACKUPS (nandroid). Especially when trying these alpha roms, get used to backing up your working roms and restoring them.

Everyone is so helpful but I'm not trying to do anything with my phone until it's officialy released. I just don't know how being rooted effects updating. I don't know if I'm wording this correctly...lol sorry

what my friend is trying to tell you sinse you are rooted you have to wait untill a rom w/ gingerbread on it which he provided some for you. and if you apply it manually you may be un-rooted then until unrevoke or others can break it .

Hi all
anyone know of a fully woking gingerbread rom at this point?

CM7 is the closest. Was using as a daily driver until yesterday to run Z3. Everything but 4g, which no GB rom has.
Check out the cyanogen forums for the latest nightly builds, and the CM7 thread in the general section for any Q's or info.

[Q] New to EVO need some knowledge

Hey guys. I know I can always count on XDA to get my info. I just got and EVO a few days ago. I have it fully rooted using unrEVOked method. I had T-mobile before and had the MyTouch 1.2 which I learned inside and out thanks to XDA. This EVO blows that phone away. Even though I just bought this EVO, I got the 003 hardware version and not 004. First off is the only difference between the two the camera? Second what is the difference between 3.30.651.3 and 3.29.651.5? Will the 003 hardware version get the OTA update to 3.30.651.3? If I flashed a 3.30.651.3 ROM to my 3.29.651.5 phone would it cause some major problems or should I wait until the OTA comes to my phone if it does? Why would I get an outdated phone sent to me when there is an updated version available? I know these are probably n00b questions, but we all have to start somewhere. Thanks for the help in advance. I have been reading to find the answer to some of these questions, but the EVO threads are huge and am having a hard time finding the answers I am looking for.
Im running a 3.30.651.5 rom on an 003 evo with no problems but iv heard others have excessive battery drain. Id stick with an older version that is actualy for your hardware though cuz your not missing out on anything, the newest ota was for a camera fix on 004 hardware phones.
Ok thanks cynic. I don't see how the ROM would cause excessive battery drain when the only thing changed was an update for the camera. I guess I could try one of each out and see if I notice anything.
Im sure theirs more to it but thats just the major difference that i know of
I understand. Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions. Also are the cyanogen nightlies based on 3.29 or 3.30.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Glad to help :-D im not sure about cyanogen though. It may not be either if it was built from the ground up. Shouldnt give you problems though, newest is cm6.1
Yeah I thought about cyanogen being an AOSP after I asked the question and figured since it wasn't posted in any thing that should be compatible with both. Thanks again for your time.

cyanogen is based on android source. currently it is android 2.2.1 build FRG83. sprint/htc still currently use 2.2 FRF91 or something.
So it is safe to use CM on any hardware version as long as the kernel works? Also, does anyone want to give me their experience with certain ROM? I am not asking which is best for me, but just want to get an overall on which ones are working best or are the communities favorite for the EVO. I am rooted but still running stock rom. I want to use a custom rom but am still reading & trying to get familiar with this phone & its development.
Oh yeah. One more question. I received an update while rooted. It was a PRL update. Is this normal? I know that probably sounds very n00bish, but I just thought rooted I wouldn't get any OTA's. Will I still get OTA's from Sprint while running stock rom rooted?

Seems to be true.
Also, does anyone want to give me their experience with certain ROM?
I run virus roms, he has a sense version and one without sense. Myns warm 2.2 is quite popular as is fresh rom.

Yes you will still get notifications to update, hardware updates are not recomended for rooted users as they may break root, but prl updates are fine
Everyone was a noob once, just glad to pass along the info.

Looking for ROM guidance

I'm currently using MIUI 12.31 and I generally like it. I would like to try a nice stable easily customizable gingerbread rom. Can someone help me sift through all the available roms? I've had my dinc rooted since September, and have tried several roms, but I'm no expert in the more development. I must rely on the work of others. Thanks for any help.

As far as I can tell, all of the Gingerbread ROMs coming to the Incredible are fairly new. You're not going to get anything thats 100% stable until people use them and report back. You also won't get the stability you are looking for because some apps may not play nice with 2.3
Agreed.. The source code was released only a couple of weeks ago. Soon... But not yet
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
If you feel like experimenting with gingerbread try R2doesinc omgbv6. I've been using it for a few days now with no issue and good battery life. There are a few known bugs though... issue with missing apps and video recording.
Be sure to flash the ota fix found in the thread otherwise it will keep trying to download the vzw froyo update.

New OTA update and root...

I caught wind that VZW is going to put out 2.3 OTA update soon, so here's my question.
If I'm rooted, but still on the stock Rom, which I have to put it back to, everything stock except for "root" and radio version, will the OTA update unroot my phone, or in any way mess anything up?
I will unroot it myself and put EVERYTHING back completely stock if I have to, but I'm not ready to give up the ability to WiFi tether my phone with my xbox to run xbox live.

Most likely the update will break root. Most do. But generally given a few days to a couple of weeks there is a new root method

Odds are someone will take the new OTA, add root, busybox, rom manager and other essentials. Make it flashable via Rom Manager the night it's released.

It wasn't long at all after the 23NOV update started being pushed OTA that us rooted dummies had a very simple to follow set of instructions:
http://solo.dc3.com/dinc/
Will be the same when/if 2.3 hits.
I don't think there are any legit sense roms built 2.3 yet. So we are forced to wait
Does anybody else think that the 2.3 ota is gonna come with Sense 2.0?
Can't wait for 2.3! However, most surely we will have to reset all settings before can update.

i really hope so. that would be incredible.
I for one like the sense clock, but I don't like the launcher, hope they add more buttons to push, like putting all the most used stuff together, like contacts.phone.messaging.browser....all on the same line. Maybe not in that order though.

If you guys wanna try a great Sense 2.0 ROM I would suggest Warm Z TwoPointTwo. Been using the nightly 3/31 and its a fantastic ROM with great stability. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=901822
I think I'm done with custom roms, not a single one I've tried has been stable so far, even though they say they're stable. I think it might actually be something with my phone that's causing instability with roms.

Sometimes u have to try different rom/kernel combos to figure out whats best for u. I have great luck with nils business z and re eng z, both using ziggys latest bfs w/o havs kernel. Im even overclocked and there both more stable than stock with fantastic battery. I wouldnt give up, your combo is out there.

Wouldn't there be some word from HTC if so? They did confirm the GB update in Q2 but didn't say anything about sense 2.0 in the emails I saw..

[Q]Help from people who know things ;) ROM question

A friend of mine has an EVO, I do not nor have I ever used an evo before. He wanted a custom ROM installed and asked me for help. I would greatly appreciate any help offered by the community.
1. What ROM is closest to stock(If gingerbread is out for it then a gingerbread build would be nice), just tweaked/debloated/deodexed/zip aligned etc.
2. How well is CM7 running on the EVO? I have a captivate and CM7 right now is pretty unstable this is going to be his main ROM and he isnt too technical.
3. What rom has a good/easy update flow. Maybe something with rom manager where he can just click update and all is well in the world.
Thank you SO much in advance.

There are plenty of stock roms and there is a couple gingerbread floating around somewhere i believe as well so your winning on that.
Cm7 i believe is very stable rom and many people enjoy it. Not me but people really enjoy cyanogens work.

Flashing a Custom (even stock) Rom and then not wanting to update to the latest and greatest...ya....ok....NOT. Your friend will get a taste of what this is like and BOOM...hooked. The Rom I linked has a great OP in support. Enjoy the fun that you already know is gonna take hold of the phone your about to set free!
EDIT: Thought I'm sure this goes without saying, but will do anyway. Remind them......DO NOT...accept OTA updates even if they can...just sayin..lmao
CM7 or Death! I played with a lot of Sense roms for quite a while, but I determined they are nothing but bloat. CM7 is superfast, and I couldn't ask for much more in stability.

[Q] Root my 2.3.6 or wait for ICS upgrade?

Hi all,
I'm still on the fence about rooting my t989 and so I'm looking for advice. I got the 2.3.6 update and I really want ICS but I'm willing to wait for it though. Also, I'm pretty conservative when it comes to risks such as rooting due to warranties, bricking, and losing functionality. However, I'll be traveling for a while and tethering could be handy and titanium backup has always been attractive to me. But what happens if ICS comes out? I think I loose root if I update OTA, but I should be able to get root again. I'm not a big fan of real 3rd party software because I don't want to work with bugs so if I got a new ROM, it may only be CM9 or similar as reliability is important to me. And then I don't want a new ROM if it doesn't use the Linux Kernel since Ubuntu is developing that OS to share that Kernel. Do I even need a new ROM? I think touchwiz is fine. Pages of apps are better than scrolling through them IMO.
So any suggestions on what I should do? Thanks!
Root it unless you plan on running stock ics. Chances are the ota will be releases here before it hits your phone we have a couple really nice ics roms right now. Don't know what your waiting for lol

It's all good with me, at least I have my wifi calling and no delay or echo while taking my minibath.

Edit: Unrooting the phone is the same process as rooting except you flash a different file to the phone.
My suggestion is to root. But don't sweat CM9 it is pretty buggy right now because its still beta and isn't officially supported on our phones. But there are plenty of stable ICS roms now and even if u don't care for the few bugs that some may have, there are also some amazing GB rooms out there too.
Just my 2 cents.

But I don't NEED a new ROM do I? Doesn't it just change the GUI? Basically I just want tethering and freeze bloat apps and ads, but a battery life boost would be great. How much does it change under the hood to expand capability? From what I can tell, root apps are the only thing that expands features.
Root and install a rom... If you think your phone is good, with a rom you'll see your phone is just great
Sorry for all my questions but is the kernel held within the ROM? And whatever ROM I choose, I can just flash to different just like that huh? Like it's an easy process?
My brother has Juggernaut, it didn't look any different than touchwiz except for flashy little things like the screen turn off and stuff. I just need function, not flash.
Some roms com with their own kernels, like TDJ's ones... You can flash a rom and then change it for another, but you have to wipe your data for a clean install (there's always the option to backup your info)
