I am upset! HTC claimed that the HTC Desire is their "superphone"/flagship phone but suddenly there is a much better phone released EVEN BEFORE the Desire was officially launched! Could someone educate me on how it this possible?
Why better?
1. Larger display
2. Better camera when it comes to the megapixels
3. HD 720p video recording
4. HDMI out!
5. Looks 100x better than the Desire
I have a question. Could this 4G phone be used in other countries as well or just the US? This is not the same as a GSM phone?

0. Who cares about 4G, more importantly, WHO HAVE 4G right now?
1. Display is TFT (NOT better than AMOLED!). more than 4.0 inches, too large, you might as well carry a laptop instead of this.
2. Who cares about cameras in phones? get SE Satio 12 MP with xenon flash if you care about Cameras in phones
3. camera again? who cares? and the HD recording is rumoured for the Desire too.

I don't think this will work on GSM phone, no, it won't work.
And I won't pick any phone without AMOLED screen at least (Samsung SUPER AMOLED is better though).
More megapixel camera is useless with that tiny sensor, believe me on this. It is better to have less megapixel under the same sensor size.
Samsung Galaxy S with its 4" SUPER AMOLED is quite ideal for me, but I don't like the software, the hardware (too rounded) and ... Samsung
I think, my feeling told me ... at the end of this year, there will be better phone from HTC with 1.5GHz Snapdragon, 4.3" AMOLED screen, 1080p HD recording.
Why? Because in June there will be iPhone 4G ... which should be better than current 3GS.
HTC is keeping its weapon to outdone that to stay on top.

Has HTC ever release a superphone at the end of the year?
well~~~I won't choose EVO too many problem for now
It will be at least two kind of 4G chip and count less 4G ISP
We just need to get used to that fact that there will be so many Android devices coming out that.... By the time we purchase the next greatest device the next greatest device will be coming out to upstage what we just bought.
Just like computers were doing for many years. By the time I got a new graphics card/cpu installed and fired up my computer I would get on the net only to read that my new GPU/CPU was already old news...
I long since learned to enjoy what I just purchased and worry about a new gadget when I had the extra money to upgrade.
I'm just happy that we now have options. I just wish US ATT would get off it's app and release a great Android device!

Anyone know if we're likely to see a UK release? I'm just about to email HTC to ask.
Not necessarily end of the year to be honest ... It could be the same day with iPhone 4G

This is the device I want. I am torn now between the Desire and Evo. Worst thing that could happen is I order the desire and next month the evo gets a UK release......
You won't be seeing a european release of this for quite a while
Sprint getting it summer 2010 - and it's a CDMA device.. So no GSM for us..
HTC Desire also seems to be more of the focus for europe - Evo is more focusing on new network technology. Hense 4G .
I'd go for the HTC Desire - even if this does come to europe - it'll be 9-12 months before it does.

THE EVO IS COMPLETLY USELESS FOR YOU!
WiMax will not be deployed in (most) European Countrys
The evo does not support GSM, CDMA is used nowhere in Europe or the rest of the world execpt US!
I would like to have Desire a lot actually. I see all the benefits but actually the only thing that i have doubts now, is the fact that it took them 4g phone to introduce front facing camera on the android.
yeah, i understand why you might think why would i need front facing camera, but i would like the possibility to use for skype, fring, free video call.
720p - well, its not real concern, because its more of a an extra feature than necessity.
8mp camera with 2 lights --- also if you take photos with your phone it still wont be the quality of dsrl camera.
i think the screen is too big for everyday use, of course there are benefits of using extra screen size, but then again you use a netbook for that, then normal laptop... then tv and finally imax experiance
4g is also a nice feature but its still has a bit to go, about 2 years before its full implemented, so by that time new-better phones will be out.

To be honest I think the Evo looks a bit fat compared to the HD2 which I currently own. I have a Desire on Preorder and having owned a 4.3" device I'm happy to scale down my screen size for screen quality. Think of it like a tv - would you swap your Samsung 42" LED tv for a 46" LCD of similar general spec? I know I wouldn't. Browsing will be splendid on the Desire.
Supposedly 720p DivX and video recording will be on the Desire at launch or thereafter. Not so bothered about the video recording side but im sure if the Evo can play Divx up to 720p someone will find how to enable it on other snapdragon based Android devices in no time.
HDMI out is of no interest to me whatsoever and will no doubt necessitate a 30 dollar cable.
Better camera? HTC cameras are all crap anyway; i'd happily keep a 5mp christmas cracker lens and have the option of a decent loudspeaker like Nokia and iPhone 3g owners get.

Coming from a fellow Texan...I couldn't agree with you more! They completely FAILED big time with the Backflip and Dell Aero (or whatever that P.O.S. is called).
2 more days of CTIA and I am keeping my fingers crossed that something is mentioned about the Desire & AT&T

Totally agree here, tech is never gonna stop. We can't get us up2date stuff,
by the time we get what we DESIRE most, there will be another mouth-watering thing in news...
So best option as my friend says above is LEARN TO ENJOY WHAT U HAVE GOT NOW...plus (my suggestion)... start saving 4 next

I think the EVO is ugly.
There is no point in more than 1 megapixel camera for most people. The latest phones have less than 1million pixel screens and even average computer screens only just exceed a million pixels. How many of your phone photos have you printed? Also phones are still using CMOS sensors and the point above about a lower resolution being better is correct. It means less red and blue sensor noise in the images when displayed on a larger screen such as on your PC. This is caused by the sensor over amplifying due to the tiny amount of light coming in through the tiny aperture.
There is no GSM support so no sim card. When you have finished with the phone it is a door stop!
There is one area with experimental 4g in the UK (Just outside Slough) and they switch it off when they are not testing it. We will NOT see 4g until some bandwidth becomes available, this will happen when the terrestrial TV signal swiches off freeing up 800MHz. This wont happen until around your next upgrade anyway (2012) and by then there will be even better 4g devices to choose from.
Also in the video of the EVO the cammera is demonstrated, frankly, it sucks, there is a light sorce in the back ground (Probably a window) and it whites out completely, so much show I am not 100% sure that the light sorce is a window as you cant see a thing, this happenes on both the still shot and the video. The desire most definately does support 800x480 video which, believe it or not, constitutes HD (anything with more than 425 lines is defined as HD)
Capasitive buttons are not good IMHO.
4+ inch screen are just too big, I have played with the HD2 and is is just too big in your pocket!
And seriously, think about it, when are you going to use an HDMI output, I have a PC and Blu-Ray at home and I cant see too many esablishment letting me plug my phone into their HDTV, I can't even imagine my friends would be over the moon about me turning up with my new phone and insisting on connecting it to the back of their telly either, it seems pointless, something you would try out, think it was cool and then never use ever again.
Dont loose any sleep over this phone, 4g is it's only +point and we have no network for some time to come!
With regard to the 8 MP camera: I wonder all the time whether the Desire will have the same camera chip as the HD2? In the tweaks threads on the HD2 it is said that the HD2 camera by means of just the software has been limited to 5 MP, but that it is an 8 MP chip. In order to achieve cost reduction by great numbers, HTC might build the same camera chip into all models - HD2, Desire, N1, Evo - and only the Evo is heralded to have an 8 MP camera?
The similar question applies to the WiFi functionality, where the HD2 also has 802.11n (not b/g only).
In the end, the difference between Desire and Evo appears to be limited to the (currently use- and senseless, to my opinion) 4G capability plus the HDMI out plus the HD2-like size of the Evo. Not reason to feel sorry for the Desire, really.

1. That is one of the reasons I am leaving the HD2: 4.3 inch is to big. After a few months of using I found out that 4.3 inch is nice, but it is not necessary. I rather have a 3.7 - 4.0 inch screen that I can much better use with one hand, while still having almost the same experience I have with my 4.3 inch screen.
2. Yes, indeed that is true. Not a huge problem though, the 5 mp camera's on the Desire/HD2/Nexus One make good pictures and decent video's for my needs.
3. I really do not care about that, at all! And it was rumored that it would come to the Desire as well.

5. I don't know about that. It looks kind of big, and it is not as 'curved' as the Desire. IMO they both look just as nice, but they both have different styles.
I myself thought for a second if the EVO 4G was not a better choice, but quickly knew the answer to that. For me, the Desire is still on top. I think the 3.7 inch (AMOLED btw, much nicer) will suite me better. And the EVO does not really offer anything else that I really need.
And I live in Europe. So that means case closed, as the EVO 4G is meant for Sprint in the US.

There was a lot of talk that HTC Desire suffers from overheating and random rebooting problems. Even worse, when they get their phone "repaired" after warranty service it still suffers from same problems, people needed to resend theirs Desire few times until its fixed. Well im planning to buy Desire but i wouldnt want those problems, in fact i pay quite a big price. One guy in this forum said that only two first motherboard revisions had that problem, but newer revisions no longer has this problem, altough i know a person who bought HTC Desire in late December, 2010, and well she said that her Desire sometimes gets hot somewhere in the bottom and reboots, but that doesnt happen often so thats not a problem for her. So seriously, what is the problem? If i will buy HTC Desire now is there a chance that i will have same problems? Or i should skip that phone and go straight to Desire HD or Desire S?

I'd go for desire s. Love my desire, but lack of space is really starting to annoy me. Had my mobo replaced few months ago, no reboots yet. Desire s is not MUCH better phone, but it looks like all the bad points with original desire have been rectified.

Well i would think the same, but we are still not sure about Desire S. How many problems will it have? Perhaps it will also have showstoppers? In fact i believe that Desire S in no way would have as rich selection of Roms as the original Desire or even Desire HD. Just because i dont think its gonna be popular enough, so no people will use that phone - no contribution they could do. Other than that i really like that phone from what ive seen, its even better than Desire, but its price is a bit too big imo for now, perhaps it will become cheaper after it will be released...
I don't know about the overheating problems. I got my Desire July last year and had no issues with it at all. I don't know about you but I would prob get Desire S, purely because it is newer. I doubt their would be any issues at all but if your still not 100% sure what to do, just wait a couple of months and see if there are any complaints about the Desire S. It probably wouldn't be as popular as the original Desire, but I reckon there will be a fair few devs out there that would do the work.
If you want to by pass all these issues with the Desire I recommend getting the HTC Evo 4G. It never over-heats nor has random reboots. Just for a little more cash it is well worth price.
You know what's crap about 4G? We don't have it in the UK.
Well im in Europe and it doesnt support cdma phones so Evo is no go for me. Today our local shop announced that Desire S will be available at early april with a price of 448 euros. The price isnt that bad, and in fact that after the phone gets in the shop and if you wait for a few weeks the price always drops by 30 euros, so it will be even better. In fact that original Desire has price of 405 euro, so i dont think i should get old one and probably will head straight to Desire S, but ill wait to ensure Desire s has no problems for about a month.
Best phone of the moment is lg optimus dual...believe me..better hardware, good price

Im not going to go deep into dual core discussion, but you dont know what are you talking about. Current android versions doesnt even support dual cores, even when it will support it dual core cpu will gain zero performance boost in most operations, just because dual core 1ghz doesnt mean 2ghz. And seeing latest nvidia news makes me laugh, the quad core mobile cpus is just an absurd. Even on pc theres actually no programs or even video games which uses more than two cores (except for compiling and video decoding which most of you dont use), so why would we need quad core cpu on phone? The atrix users already have random rebooting issues, while snapdragon's second gen cpu doesnt have any problems at all. And from the hands on it actually feels that atrix, optimus 2x or even galaxy s2 have slight lag when switching through homescreens, but HTC phones are 100% smooth. So judging about phone's performance by looking at the specs is just silly.

Actually i know that current android dont support multi core and i also know that 1gh dual core are not 2ghz..thanks anyway
..But android 2.4 will support multi core procesors..so if u want a phone thinking for a long period, then in my opinion that is a good choice..

u must think in future purpose, this just my opinion...if u like buy a phone every year and have money for that, then do it..i had 3 phones in the last 8 years..every time i choice a phone to have for a long time..

Android 2.4 is gingerbread for every other device apart from the nexus one and nexus s and a couple more phones. 2.4 does not support gingerbread either.

In technical terms it is NEVER relevant if we really "NEED" it, because the important thing to evolve is to think "is it possible to do"!
Definitely quad core cpus is innovation, but its just an absurd because currently even pcs dont really use more than two cores for average user. If quad cores doesnt have anything useful for pcs how could they be useful to smartphone? Sorry but blindly following whats new is just stupid. Everything has boundaries. Why nobody makes pcs with 12 cores or even more now? Because it could be totally useless so pcs now dont get anything new because its already full featured and theres nothing you can add. The same story is with smart phones, why would you need it? Are you planning to compile applications with your phone? As some people say: Talk loud, repeat that few times and people will believe it. Im not going to be victim of adverts. Everyone chooses what they like, i choose HTC just because its reliable, smooth software, not like crappy LG or Samsung which has good hardware but poor software. In fact in day to day operations dual core phones like galaxy s2 or optimus 2x felt even laggier than HTC devices. Just because their software is crap.

between Apple and HTC, I'd say HTC is laggier & I have both.
I have near zero faith in LG & Samsung in software fixes. I'd rather go for Nokia for reliable hardware
HTC Desire is laggy as hell for me when I was using unrooted froyo so best not to judge a phone by it's cover. (Laggy as in really sluggish performance in terms of web browsing/certain gaming lag not to mention hot as -)

You should have seriously checked your apps. All of the reviewers say that HTC Desire is super smooth (at least compared to other android handsets). While definitely its not as smooth as iphone, it gives me user power. Theres only one device which runs ios so ios is optimized for that iphone, while in comparison there are hundreds of android devices and optimizing android for every device is unpractical, so thats why android devices dont work as smooth as iphone. The reason im not choosing Iphone is the limitations and restrictions it has. Im a geek, and i want geekish phone.
Btw are you still in 2003? Forget Nokia's hardware, now its the same as others, i own few Nokias and their build quality isnt better than Samsung. New nokias are unstable and weak like all other manufacturers and thats natural because the more complex phone is the more fragile it is.
Possible Fix for Overheating HTC Desire

I have a HTC Desire with the AMOLED-Screen, which is said to be way better than the SLCD. I did a lot of research using Google and various forums, but did not find a real fix for my overheating phone: everytime i did more than just listen to music, my phone rebooted over and over again. It did get hot in the commonly described areas (around the microSDHC and SIM-Card and the little black square), and i had to rip off the battery to make it stop. I was really annoyed since i read that i would get a replacement without the AMOLED-Screen, that is why i decided to do some testing on my own. I found out, that i had less trouble with higher workload when i enhanced cooling by putting it in the fridge for example. (Other things like changing the microSDHC did not solve the problem for me.) When it comes to computers overheating, you clean them and have a look at the thermal grease between the chips and the coolers - and that is what i decided to do to my phone. On the inside of the battery cover, there is some metal-like shield in the lower area. I guess it is there for heat dissipation - but maybe it did not have proper contact. As i did not want to clutter the phone with thermal paste, i ordered a pad on ebay (for about 2€), cut it into smaller pieces and attached it to the parts that are known to become hot (see above). Then i attached my phone to the charger and ran a lot of apps, that would usually make my phone crash (Music Player, Skype, Internet Browsing at the same time). The back of the phone grew hotter and hotter (and was, in the end, a lot hotter than anything i have encountered over the last few month with my crashing phone), but it was stable!
So, if you are annoyed with your overheating HTC Desire: This might be a fix for you:
Buy a thermal pad (as it is used for CPUs, GPUs or Chipsets, mine was about 0,5mm thick) and attach it to the metal parts over SIM and microSDHC as well as the tiny black square and the area to the left of it. Mount the battery cover and enjoy!

EDIT: Turns out, the "fix" only delays the reboot-loop. It appears a lot more stable, yet it did still annoy me. Yesterday i handed it in for a replacement.

I have been wanting to replace my bricked Galaxy S with one of the below smartphones:
- T-Mobile G2
- Nexus One
- HTC Leo/HD2
- Nexus S
The requirements for my selection include:
- The ability to function under the AWS 1700/2100 frequency
- The ability to utilize MicroSD storage (Nexus S fails in this category)
- Have a reasonably good/congenial screen size and resolution
- Have a variety of custom ROMs and modifications
- The ability to use LED notifications
- Have a good build and be considerably capable, perdurable and dependable in terms of both hardware and software (unrelenting to software defects such as bricking, and hardware flaws).
I would be very grateful if you, the owners of the G2, would kindly reflect upon your overall experiences with your device and inform me of the phones pros and cons. I would also be thankfully open to any recommendations regarding my selection.

Okay bro i have both G2 and a Nexus S... I like both phones but in my own opinion i think the nexus S is kinda better. I love Pure stock android

Pros:
Great keyboard
Can use the LED (only if rooted...unless there an app for that)
Cons:
The loose hinge
Screen wobbles due to the screen
The back cover can start peeling its silver metal finish
The matte finish all around the phone can change color over time. (fixable with a case/ i prefer a clear case to show off its sexiness while still being protected)
Using a case causes the matte finish to chip off very tiny pieces. -___-
I kinda want a mytouch4g. I'm not a keyboard user...
You should wait because Galaxy SII, hTc Pyramid, and other great devices are coming out. I suggest you wait a little longer
I don't find the necessity to buy a dual-core phone. I am buying these phones because of their great development also, something that the Galaxy S line lacks.
I personally love HTC Sense UI also, therefore leaning my decision towards buying HTC branded phones. I also want the phones to be reasonably priced (under 450 or so), unlike the new dual cores which may cost more than 600$.

The only reason I got a G2 is because it was free on tmobile.com last month..
Pros:
fast for 800mhz
Keyboard is great (3 quick keys come in handy)
@ and www./.com key is great
Decent size screen
Camera qual is good
4G network
Easily rooted and good custom roms
Hinge isn't as bad as people make it out to be
Froyo is cool for stock
Cons:
Preloaded google apps suck (root to remove)
Battery life (stock)
Network Card isn't that great for 4g service
4rows on keyboard rather than 5 (non dedicated numbers)

It looks like I have no other option but to go for the HD2. I want to use the phones on Mobilicity/Wind's AWS frequency here in Canada, with their cheap unlimited plans costing a maximum of 45$. Therefore, because the Nexus S has no Ext. SD slot and both Nexus' are equally expensive when bought without a contract, i will have to opt for either the HD2 or the G2; which in this case melodicjunkie's review of the G2 deprecates the device.
The fact that the HD2 is versatile and can run WP7 and Android (Sense, Cyanogen, Gingerbread, Honeycomb) makes it a more worthy selection. However there is some quality of the G2 which still attracts me to it.
I'd go for the Desire HD if it would run on AWS frequency, however I must sigh because it does not.
The G2 is a newer phone than the HD2, so it runs a lot better, especially since it runs Android natively, which the HD2 just really can't compete in terms of actual performance. I have both phones right now, so I speak from experience.
HD2 Pros:
Screen size is sexy, but can be too big for some people at 4.3"
Can run WinMo, WP7, Android, Meego, Ubuntu. Lots of variety.
Lots of development going on, but only a handful for each OS are quality in my opinion.
Cons:
No trackpad/trackball
Older processor
Android is not as smooth as on the G2
No hardware camera button
Boot times are ridiculously long compared to the G2
G2 Pros:
Nearly stock Android 2.2
Newer processor runs faster at 800Mhz than HD2 at 1Ghz
Rooted, the phone can be OC'd ridiculous amounts
Clockspeed for clockspeed, G2 always beats HD2 on all benchmarks
Physical keyboard is one the best I've ever used
Trackpad does its job
Camera button
Not as much dev work as the HD2, but it's growing and it is quality work
CM support. Nuff said.
Cons:
Cannot charge with the phone off. Always goes into recovery. It's annoying.
Trackpad gets a bit wonky under direct incandescent light
Google bloatware, though some of it I do actually use
Hinge is loose, but it doesn't bother me and the screen doesn't wiggle on mine
Not very many LED colors to choose from, even when rooted
Wish it were a 5 row keyboard like the G1

Overall, I began using the G2 daily once I got it and rooted it with CM. Haven't looked back since. The G2 outperforms the HD2 on all aspects for me. It just seems to have a more premium feeling to it because of the extra metal accents on the front of the phone. It feels more solid and seems like it can take more abuse than the HD2 due to a smaller screen size.

The HD2 is outdated and slow.. lol @tazz9690 = if the hd2 boot time is slower than that's sad because the G2 boot time (non rooted) is sloowww lol.
As for recovery charge, that's only when rooted but yes that is annoying.
The G2 is perfectly fine for 100dollars contract.. the highest id pay for this phone (contract or not) is
150 USD. Maybe 200 if I didn't already know how to root and it were rooted. For 0 dollars with contract it was literally a steal, but let's just say if the Evo shift was the same deal ida got that instantly.
Don't get the slow HD2.
If you want tmobile that bad get the mytouch 4 for the front cam.. no keyboard but so what?
Or you can wait for the sidekick 4g (sarcasm) although 1ghz sidekick! Lmao
I actually had the HD2. I currently have the G2 and the Nexus One.
I'd advise against the HD2. I'm currently running the Nexus One with Miui which will partition the sdcard on it own to allow more apps. The first time I used the Nexus One with CM7 I realized that not all my apps from the G2 were gonna fit the Nexus One. The N1 has a very low internal memory as appose to the G2. Again, Miui roms auto partition your sdcard to allow more apps to fix without the hassle of moving them over manually. You can manually partition the sdcard to allow more apps on CM7.
I really like the Nexus One (just bought it). I'm currently using the N1, and what I really like about it is that mostly all types of roms, sense, stock android, CM7, and Miui work flawless.
Keyboard on the G2 is awesome. You can't go wrong with a G2 or an N1.
I never used the N1. I wanted it when it came out but never got it. The N1 is very stable and sleek as for what I've seen and for what I've been told.
Id go with the G2 over the N1. The g2 had a baby and N1 was born.. or the N1 is the younger brother.. either direction you wanna go, get the G2 over the N1.
I'm still saying wait for a dualcore Tmobile..

Get a MyTouch4G. Fast processor, 768MB RAM, FFC, lots of development, easy to root. Looks better in real life and feels great in the hand. The black one has soft touch rubber around the sides while the others are just plastic so go for black. You wont regret it, definitely an underrated phone.
It is essentially the DesireHD with a smaller screen (3.8" but still the same resolution).
It meets all your criteria. I think you will be pleased.

I was saying in terms of specs/size? The n1 was a trackball (old gen), no keyboard..
The n1 is a mega mytouch 3g.
Get a mytouch 4 black.

I'm thinking this would be a great choice for you. I picked G2 over it because of the keyboard, but either phone is a great choice. MT4G has a little bit better specs though, since it has more ram and it's CPU is clocked 200mhz higher at stock (that's easily fixed if you root either phone). I'm more than happy with the G2; every phone has it's quirks, and that's why there are so many on the market. IMO this is the best phone on the market with a keyboard, although I haven't tried the Evo Shift yet (same internal hardware as G2/DZ though).
If my G1 were still functional, I'd be using it today even though I would've been due for an upgrade in October..

Of these choices the G2 is what I'd pick but as others have suggested I'd actually recommend the MyTouch 4G.
The G2 keyboard is not that good (compared to the G1 anyways) and thanks to Swype I rarely use it. Since the MT4G doesn't have a keyboard you have more case options.
MT4G is faster
MT4G has physical buttons for home, back & menu unlike the lame soft-keys found on the G2 and most other phones today.
Both have decent custom ROM support

I had a premonition I was going to be asked this question. hah!
I am simply going to wait for the HTC Pyramid or for the Incredible S to decrease in price, then I will make me selection. It feels slightly awkward to purchase a N1 or an HD2 as it would feel somewhat like a downgrade from my previous powerhouse phone, the Galaxy S.
Although I must say that I find it extremely difficult and frustrating to wait for the later smartphone releases (Incredible S, Pyramid). Therefore I am truly lost as to whether I should buy an HTC phone compatible with AWS now, or whether I should wait for future dual-core HTCs.

Look, if you have a phone now: what's the rush? Who knows what kind of bugs these new phones will have. Id rather risk buying a release date kick ass phone, than to buy outdated hardware. Even the sidekick 4g is better than the hd2.. and the sidekick 4g is a freaking joke!

Cmon, 8mp cam, front facing one as well.. stocked 1.2 ghz (I do that rooted on g2), you can. only imagine the rooting capabilites on the pyramid.. 2.3ghz overclock?? Maybe, because of the dual core processor and ram..
And to top it off, a phone like that seems odd to have a physical keyboard, which looks sick! The sleak design is amazing, especially the back.

you know i picked up my phone because im REAL ROUGH with my phones. (lost 2 to jetskis and 2 to just plan old wear and tear) i loved the idea of a phone that if it was raining i wouldnt have to worry about pulling it out and drowning it or if i banged my leg on something while at work i wouldnt destroy my phone.
Now i NEVER expected to have a phone that would see this much support. i mean motorola just put out the droid x, this phone is a little weird looking (i dont really like the white and black) it has a smaller screen then ur average smart phone and its not the most powerful thing out there.
But have any of u noticed the amount of love us defy owners are getting???? the phone was rooted REAL fast. we had 2.2 by what the 2nd month the phone was out. now we have 2nd init AND cm7 (2.3). i mean the droid x doesnt get anywhere near that much attention from the developers and people where SWEARING it was the big next thing.
honestly im just shocked that my phone is faster smoother and prettier then my friends droid x, then to top it off i can drop it into a puddle pick it up and start searching the web with no problems. its a beautiful beautiful thing
i just want to thank ALL the people that have become as taken with this phone as i have (who knew motorola could do something right) and then taken time out of there lives to make it better.
rugged but sexy, tough but fast and on top of it is android OS. ahh.. just the perfect blend. until motorola defy 2 comes out (which I hope is already planned) am sticking with this as my main phone along with my other devices. I even created a new xda account for the love of motorola defy. ;]
my 2.1 defy feels miles faster than my brothers 2.2 Samsung Galaxy Ace and his Ace keeps locking up for no apparent reason. People moan about the Defy only having an 800MHz processor but it must be implemented really well, his Galaxy ace cannot play snes and megadrive games smoothly where as they are spot on on my defy
its beautiful, fast, very well supported, amazing display, android os, rugged, and its the perfect size. i mean, 4" screen is too big for my hands, but 3.7" is just perfect. and of course, its by far the best phone for this price!

Defy has the personality/functionality of a water-resistant watch. So, when you come to think about it, that's exactly what a smart phone should be.
You got to touch it to know it...
It's not too big like HTC desire models and it's not too small you unable to type sms.
Features and functionality.. above posts said it all
Many reasons: first of all, the roughness. Then, it is easily customizable (something quite rare in a Motorola phone). Somehow, it was also very well coded, so things run smooth on it, even without overclocking (even though OC lets me play Modern Combat 2 with absolutely no lag). Also, nice display, very decent camera (specially after you enable 720p recording), and, most of all, the excellent cost-benefit. With the data plan I got from my carrier, it only costed me 50% more than a X8 or a Galaxy 5 would cost (149 reais - the currency here in Brazil - against R$99 of the SonyEricsson or the Samsung phones). The only other phone I saw such an active developing community was the HTC Magic (consequently, the HTC Dream, too). But, with the Defy's hardware, developers can do even more.
I bought the phone after 20 days of exclusive research on HTCs, SAMSUNGs, and offcourse MOTOs. considering the price, look, CPU, internal memory, toughness, .... it is by far the best available.
I would not regret buying it.
I wanted a new phone with a keyboard and android, there was nothing i liked out at the time so i got the defy because of the ruggedness. So far it's already saved itself and me from having to buy a replacement due to a large drink spill on a table.
I've also been the cause of a few different HTC's early retirements due to accidental dropping's and submerging them in liquid, so im very pleased with the defy.
Also mhz means nothing when your comparing completely different types of chips. And the 800mhz in the defy is very good.
To add, Defy is amazingly fairly priced. With all the ruggedness, you pretty much pay for 1 (toughphone or Andromobile, choose), get 2 for free.
Oh and we all love MotoBlur
I had to choose from a iPhone 3GS (8gb) SGS 1 and Moto Defy. Of course Defy . It's a well priced smartphone, good looking on black, powerfull and light. I got it for 99 euro's on 2 year 17 euro data plan but the price could have dropped to as much as 50 euro's depending on how much minutes and SMS you wanted.
I hope Motorola unlocks the bootloader in Q4 as i saw people saying here. And in 2012 it gives us the Defy 2 . I can say Motorola is back in business.
For me it does everything i need it to do and more

Moto is in business since they released Droid/Milestone. Let's hope that they keep their word regarding the unlocked bootloader. Though I am also looking forward to Defy 2, it also means my Defy will become old when the upgrade comes out

+ Compact. 3.7" Screen yet is more compact than the iPhone except in thickness.
+ Rugged. The only Android phone out that is durable.

The Defy is technically in the same class as the big phones, Samsung Galaxy S, HTC Desire, iPhone 4 etc, in terms of processing power and screen resolution.
Samsung Galaxy Ace is a mid-range phone similar to LG Optimus One. They are in a different class altogether.
IMVHO Motorola did a technical masterpiece with the Defy. Although the screen is almost as big as the iPhone 4 the area around the screen is minimal. They wasted almost no space.
Out of curiosity, anyone here considering a move to Casio's G'zOne Commando?
While perhaps more rugged than most smartphones, the Defy is not a rugged device. The Commando on the otherhand, meets several Military 810G rugged compliance specifications.
I am thinking about it and can live with the slightly smaller screen. What I cannot live with is Bing and Verizon bloat, so I am curious to see the community support.

-Very ugly phone
-USA Only
Pro & Con (At same time) : Froyo (Yes it comes with Froyo but the Defy can easily have 2.3.4 CM7 ,so still a win )
It is rugged and looks like one,but take in fact the Defy doesnt look at all rugged and it is.
Also you dont know its GPU,or if it has a dedicated one,Defy has a PowerVR 530 for sure.
Basically theire both good,depends on which you want to lean twards,for the most rugged but same time heavy(& ugly)phone,get the Casio,for just a rugged phone,get the Defy....and for a sensible plastic thingy,get anything else lol.

What the ! which ROM are you using ? and did you clear off some useless apps?
I currently have an Xperia X10, I've had it since it came out in Canada. I've had numerous roms on it etc, I'm currently on stock 2.3.
Anyway, I'm getting frustrated with my carrier, and the phone... lack of touch sensitivity and other issues are driving me crazy.
I've also picked up an EEE Transformer, so I find myself using my phone less and less for "intensive" things. I used to have to use it for email/files/etc at work, but not anymore. I'm thinking now I want a phone that's more "utility" vs "powerhouse".
I'm thinking of getting a Defy. It's $49 on contract, $379 without.
Other options are: Nexus S, or wait (not sure how long) for a Galaxy S2 X (hercules)., but I like the water resistance and toughness of the Defy.
Not sure if the Defy+ is coming to the carrier.
How does the Defy compare to the X10 in terms of speed? I know about the smaller screen etc, but hows the raw performance? Are the Gingerbread ROMs solid?

In terms of performance a bit better than the x10 (on custom rom's at least) but less screen. Galaxy S2 much better. BUT not water resistant.
The resistant is nice 'in case of' but you can't count on it.
Galaxy s2 t-mobile (hercules) sounds really good, big display and fast hardware. I do think this will be really expansive.
The defy is good and will be all u require if u r ready to use custom roms ...but if it were me I'd wait for the defy plus
Well i would go for nexus S. Decent processor and camera, AWESOME display and GPU and of course full google support (after all it`s their phone right?) + pretty good support for it here, on XDA
If you don`t like nexus S, you can go for Defy of course (decent specs + "life proof") but, try to get one with red lens for HD recording.

If i were you i would go for an Atrix. The Motorola Atrix is the best phone i used. Excellent touch responsiveness, great 4 inch display (It's nice to read in that screen and the display resolution is enough for all your needs) It's not so expensive, remember it has a Dual Core processor with a Tegra 2 GPU from Nvidia wich will give you better performance and it will response in most of hard use situations as fast as you would need. It also has many accesories such like the Laptop, the multimedia dock, the standard dock and a full size USB keyboard. And that's not all, it has a 1940 mAh battery and also you'll be able to visit overclocking and undervolting thread to speed up your processor and undervolt it to extend its battery life. It come by default with Android Froyo 2.2, not the best option for a high end phone, but it is fully functional and compatible with most of the market's applications. I think it would be the best choice you could make. In a near future it will be updated to Android Gingerbread, wich has new features and better perfomance. Go for it, you won't regret. Galaxy S II is as good as Motorola Atrix, the difference is the display inches, the AMOLED Plus screen, and the CPU's speed. But it doesn't include Tegra 2, and in mine opinion, Motorola is better in quality. You can also lock your Phone using the Fingerprint feature, nice, isn't it? Look for it.
I have Defy about 5 mounts, it great, i will get it again I will not get Atrix, cause a Pentile display (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PenTile_matrix_family) on Defy i can play every Tegra game, and NVidia' chip not offers something special, about me. I not buy and Nexus S, not a Samsung fan, but best phone at this time not even Samsung Galaxy S2 or stupid 3D lame, it's LG Optimus Black, such a greatest display i ever saw, NOVA, low-power, great colors so real and dynamic. About me if you wait you will get phone with HQ resolution 1280x720 and new technology, it's will be best, i don't know, but it's your decision, good luck.

I also change from a X10 (2.3) to a Defy (2.2) two weeks ago... I was looking for an outdoor android phone and was tired to wait for the Xperia active (which will have a low res screen).
I am 90% satisfied by my new Defy... not 100% because of the GPS problem which sometime freeze the phone.
Everything is very reactive, sound is much much better and screnn resolution is the same as the Xperia, so you hae exactly the same "view" as with an Xêria when surfing the net.
I still use my X10, as backup phone or as navigation system, at least as long as i don't find how to fix the Defy GPS.

If you are on Stock 2.2, your issue is most likely caused by the VM eating all your memory, causing first the phone to lag like hell, and then rebooting itself.
Go to the Beginners Guide and check out on common problems this "Stock Froyo sometimes lags and/or freezes the phone"
