Dear friends,
I am upset! HTC claimed that the HTC Desire is their "superphone"/flagship phone but suddenly there is a much better phone released EVEN BEFORE the Desire was officially launched! Could someone educate me on how it this possible?
Why better?
1. Larger display
2. Better camera when it comes to the megapixels
3. HD 720p video recording
4. HDMI out!
5. Looks 100x better than the Desire
I have a question. Could this 4G phone be used in other countries as well or just the US? This is not the same as a GSM phone?

0. Who cares about 4G, more importantly, WHO HAVE 4G right now?
1. Display is TFT (NOT better than AMOLED!). more than 4.0 inches, too large, you might as well carry a laptop instead of this.
2. Who cares about cameras in phones? get SE Satio 12 MP with xenon flash if you care about Cameras in phones
3. camera again? who cares? and the HD recording is rumoured for the Desire too.
4. ok, maybe thats a point for Evo
5. I disagree, this point is personal taste anyways, not better or worst
I don't think this will work on GSM phone, no, it won't work.
And I won't pick any phone without AMOLED screen at least (Samsung SUPER AMOLED is better though).
More megapixel camera is useless with that tiny sensor, believe me on this. It is better to have less megapixel under the same sensor size.
Samsung Galaxy S with its 4" SUPER AMOLED is quite ideal for me, but I don't like the software, the hardware (too rounded) and ... Samsung
I think, my feeling told me ... at the end of this year, there will be better phone from HTC with 1.5GHz Snapdragon, 4.3" AMOLED screen, 1080p HD recording.
Why? Because in June there will be iPhone 4G ... which should be better than current 3GS.
HTC is keeping its weapon to outdone that to stay on top.
Mark my dream ... eh, my words

Has HTC ever release a superphone at the end of the year?
well~~~I won't choose EVO too many problem for now
It will be at least two kind of 4G chip and count less 4G ISP
We just need to get used to that fact that there will be so many Android devices coming out that.... By the time we purchase the next greatest device the next greatest device will be coming out to upstage what we just bought.
Just like computers were doing for many years. By the time I got a new graphics card/cpu installed and fired up my computer I would get on the net only to read that my new GPU/CPU was already old news...
I long since learned to enjoy what I just purchased and worry about a new gadget when I had the extra money to upgrade.
I'm just happy that we now have options. I just wish US ATT would get off it's app and release a great Android device!
Wow, I was all set to preorder my desire today - then this pops up!
Anyone know if we're likely to see a UK release? I'm just about to email HTC to ask.
Not necessarily end of the year to be honest ... It could be the same day with iPhone 4G
That would be awesome day!

Well, I got a (pretty unhelpful) reply from HTC about a UK release of the Supersonic.
Dear Paul
Thank you for contacting us.
At the moment we won't comment on future products releases before an official statement but we suggest to follow us on our social networks (Facebook, Twitter) or consult periodically our website for the latest news on our products.
Please do not hesitate to contact us again if required.
Best regards,

HTC
wow
This is the device I want. I am torn now between the Desire and Evo. Worst thing that could happen is I order the desire and next month the evo gets a UK release......
You won't be seeing a european release of this for quite a while
Sprint getting it summer 2010 - and it's a CDMA device.. So no GSM for us..
HTC Desire also seems to be more of the focus for europe - Evo is more focusing on new network technology. Hense 4G .
I'd go for the HTC Desire - even if this does come to europe - it'll be 9-12 months before it does.
HDMI out? I struggle to see the point
To anyone outside the US Complaining:
THE EVO IS COMPLETLY USELESS FOR YOU!
WiMax will not be deployed in (most) European Countrys
The evo does not support GSM, CDMA is used nowhere in Europe or the rest of the world execpt US!
I would like to have Desire a lot actually. I see all the benefits but actually the only thing that i have doubts now, is the fact that it took them 4g phone to introduce front facing camera on the android.
yeah, i understand why you might think why would i need front facing camera, but i would like the possibility to use for skype, fring, free video call.
720p - well, its not real concern, because its more of a an extra feature than necessity.
8mp camera with 2 lights --- also if you take photos with your phone it still wont be the quality of dsrl camera.
i think the screen is too big for everyday use, of course there are benefits of using extra screen size, but then again you use a netbook for that, then normal laptop... then tv and finally imax experiance
4g is also a nice feature but its still has a bit to go, about 2 years before its full implemented, so by that time new-better phones will be out.
the rest is been said already.
To be honest I think the Evo looks a bit fat compared to the HD2 which I currently own. I have a Desire on Preorder and having owned a 4.3" device I'm happy to scale down my screen size for screen quality. Think of it like a tv - would you swap your Samsung 42" LED tv for a 46" LCD of similar general spec? I know I wouldn't. Browsing will be splendid on the Desire.
Supposedly 720p DivX and video recording will be on the Desire at launch or thereafter. Not so bothered about the video recording side but im sure if the Evo can play Divx up to 720p someone will find how to enable it on other snapdragon based Android devices in no time.
HDMI out is of no interest to me whatsoever and will no doubt necessitate a 30 dollar cable.
Better camera? HTC cameras are all crap anyway; i'd happily keep a 5mp christmas cracker lens and have the option of a decent loudspeaker like Nokia and iPhone 3g owners get.

Totally agree here, tech is never gonna stop. We can't get us up2date stuff,
by the time we get what we DESIRE most, there will be another mouth-watering thing in news...
So best option as my friend says above is LEARN TO ENJOY WHAT U HAVE GOT NOW...plus (my suggestion)... start saving 4 next
wish list.
I think the EVO is ugly.
There is no point in more than 1 megapixel camera for most people. The latest phones have less than 1million pixel screens and even average computer screens only just exceed a million pixels. How many of your phone photos have you printed? Also phones are still using CMOS sensors and the point above about a lower resolution being better is correct. It means less red and blue sensor noise in the images when displayed on a larger screen such as on your PC. This is caused by the sensor over amplifying due to the tiny amount of light coming in through the tiny aperture.
There is no GSM support so no sim card. When you have finished with the phone it is a door stop!
There is one area with experimental 4g in the UK (Just outside Slough) and they switch it off when they are not testing it. We will NOT see 4g until some bandwidth becomes available, this will happen when the terrestrial TV signal swiches off freeing up 800MHz. This wont happen until around your next upgrade anyway (2012) and by then there will be even better 4g devices to choose from.
Also in the video of the EVO the cammera is demonstrated, frankly, it sucks, there is a light sorce in the back ground (Probably a window) and it whites out completely, so much show I am not 100% sure that the light sorce is a window as you cant see a thing, this happenes on both the still shot and the video. The desire most definately does support 800x480 video which, believe it or not, constitutes HD (anything with more than 425 lines is defined as HD)
Capasitive buttons are not good IMHO.
4+ inch screen are just too big, I have played with the HD2 and is is just too big in your pocket!
And seriously, think about it, when are you going to use an HDMI output, I have a PC and Blu-Ray at home and I cant see too many esablishment letting me plug my phone into their HDTV, I can't even imagine my friends would be over the moon about me turning up with my new phone and insisting on connecting it to the back of their telly either, it seems pointless, something you would try out, think it was cool and then never use ever again.
Dont loose any sleep over this phone, 4g is it's only +point and we have no network for some time to come!
With regard to the 8 MP camera: I wonder all the time whether the Desire will have the same camera chip as the HD2? In the tweaks threads on the HD2 it is said that the HD2 camera by means of just the software has been limited to 5 MP, but that it is an 8 MP chip. In order to achieve cost reduction by great numbers, HTC might build the same camera chip into all models - HD2, Desire, N1, Evo - and only the Evo is heralded to have an 8 MP camera?
The similar question applies to the WiFi functionality, where the HD2 also has 802.11n (not b/g only).
In the end, the difference between Desire and Evo appears to be limited to the (currently use- and senseless, to my opinion) 4G capability plus the HDMI out plus the HD2-like size of the Evo. Not reason to feel sorry for the Desire, really.

1. That is one of the reasons I am leaving the HD2: 4.3 inch is to big. After a few months of using I found out that 4.3 inch is nice, but it is not necessary. I rather have a 3.7 - 4.0 inch screen that I can much better use with one hand, while still having almost the same experience I have with my 4.3 inch screen.
2. Yes, indeed that is true. Not a huge problem though, the 5 mp camera's on the Desire/HD2/Nexus One make good pictures and decent video's for my needs.
3. I really do not care about that, at all! And it was rumored that it would come to the Desire as well.
4. Again, I do not care about that.
5. I don't know about that. It looks kind of big, and it is not as 'curved' as the Desire. IMO they both look just as nice, but they both have different styles.
I myself thought for a second if the EVO 4G was not a better choice, but quickly knew the answer to that. For me, the Desire is still on top. I think the 3.7 inch (AMOLED btw, much nicer) will suite me better. And the EVO does not really offer anything else that I really need.
And I live in Europe. So that means case closed, as the EVO 4G is meant for Sprint in the US.

Ok so I got a legend, freakin cool phone. Had the opportunity to upgrade to desire for free so of course I took it. Now don't get me wrong, of course the desire is a 'better' phone, but I cannot help but notice that build is soooo much better on the legend. Now most of you will say of course, it is aluminum, but it's not just that.
1) Probably the most annoying, the screen on the legend destroys the desire. It shouldn't on paper, but believe me it does. The pentile matrix vs no pentile matrix is abundantly clear.
2) I am terrified of dust getting under the screen because i can see the gap between the screen and phone and am constantly making sure I clear dust from it. On the legend the screen is sealed to the side of the phone.
3) Well obviously the materials aren't as nice, but I knew that would be the case in making the change so that one does not really count.
That being said, the desire is a powerful beast and I am looking forward to Froyo.
These might be interesting points to someone tossing up between the two phones. The legend was also blazingly quick, and unless you want to play the latest 3d games, it is probably fast enough for you. Still not sure if I did the right thing upgrading!
yeah i know what you mean about the pentile thing, i'm not surprised the legend screen looks better tbh
and i find the gap between the screen and body annoying as well, but theres nothing you can do lol
yea unfortunately i did not know about the pentile thing prior to changing. i am sure i would not have really noticed it i i didn't have the legend first, but dayom! the screen on the legend was crisp!
Yes I agree, legends actually a very good phone except one and only one problem which is the CPU...... it pushes legend to an edge that everyone turn to desire.
But hero and legend has actually a much better size and style which I love them so much.
Although I am using desire, lol.

HTC were so close to making literally the be all and end all of kick ass smart phones, desire components in legend body. Damn that would been sweet
Am I the only one mystified that each new HTC phone seems to be disconnected from the past models? In other words, why not the Legend II?
Not with android family at least.
You can see the touch series that htc made for windows mobile. Well, initially, only some touch models and now all their wm devices are under the name Touch.
Hopefully, there is something like that to happen to their android product line.
And I'm really looking for the gsm versions of evo 4g and incredible. N1/desire power, legend design quality without mis-register multitouch issue on popular gsm network. I don't live in the US btw.

argh! i need to figure out in the next 2 days whether i want to change back to legend. if i am not going to be playing crazy games or using google earth, do you think the desire is overkill? the main thing i would be worried about with the legend is that it will lack the support of the desire as it is not a flagship model

I have the Desire and i loved it... Never got the chance to test Legend since i compared the two and have gone to the powerfull one, but...
I really dislike the physical buttons on the Desire. It bothers me that a touch device have so many physical buttons (they can be physical, but more integrated to the design like the Legend).
Also the speaker is very poor when making calls on speakerphone (but i think this is HTC regular) and the battery cover lacks some quality...
My eyes are really stuck on Legend - it is simply fabulous! Really really beautiful and made of aluminum, but i also heard that it makes wireless power go down a bit when compared to other non aluminum.
I've bought the Desire instead of the Legend mainly because of the power vs price and the wireless thing...
My advice is that you go for the one you like the most, since they are mainly the same, but the Legend is so dawn cool and beautiful and the Desire is a powerful beast! Which serves you best?
All right, have decided to keep the desire. Although this is probably more down to laziness than an actual well thought out decision. But if I decide I really want the legend then I can always sell the desire. Might do that if legend actually gets 2.2

You won't regret it
One day you'll need that Snapdragon CPU, and rumors are FroYo may enable 720p video recording
Ok little bit of an update, just managed to get my desire side by side with my friends legend.
The colors on the legend look so washed out next to the desire! Doesn't even seem AOMED. In my memory legend screen was so much better but next to desire it did not compare.
Also legend felt pretty slow after using the desire for 2 weeks.
So in my opinion, the legend only wins out on form factor now. Glad I kept my desire, enjoying all the custom roms that are coming out!
I have never gone android and from the specs it is going to be a great phone. Dear members will I be disappointed if I get rid of my leo and go for it? What is the main differences between windows pc and android ? Or would you rather I wait for windows 7 I am used to. But I am greatly interested!
Not much of an answer, but I'm definitely looking at replacing my HD2/Leo with a Desire HD. It really is the phone I've been waiting for HTC to come out with.
For me its Android over anything,
The main difference is that android if very customizable and all open source, you wont be disappointed if you ditch your Leo for this phone, specs wise its amazing and now that is running new HTC sence UI. I think that you will be very happy with Android.
Any other question, feel free to PM me or anything.
I think I will be replacing my HD2 with this. Been running Android on my HD2 for a few days, and I love it. Given that the Desire HD is the same size, and better hardware than the HD2, I think it's a winner!
I as well have The HD2 with the android running and also helped 2 other peple get their HD2's setup with android. I love it over windows. The windows pretty customizable to a certain point and I do like it too but like is not the word for the android stuff. I had the G1 and it took a cyanogen beating and kept on ticking. And then I went to the HD2 and as soon as I saw roms for it Ii went to town on it but I slammed on the brakes with the froyo rom from Darkstone and Its whats running right now. So to say Im looking forward to this Desire Phone is an understatement. Im real excited WOO!
Load up Android on your HD2 and take it for a test drive. They have a bunch of choices in the HD2 forum so you can get a feel for it to see if you like it.
If wealthy, buy Desire HD.
If not so well off, try Android on HD2, if it you like it and want to pay for extra hardware on Desire HD you can wait until no longer brand new tech, and price drops a little.
If not cash rich, wait for Desire HD rom to be ported onto HD2 to replace WinMo.
All you lose is extra 3 megs on camera (not a big deal)
Extra internal memory (can do without)
Slightly faster cpu.
Movie playback quality?
The Desire HD is great but nothing special above the HD2..I mean sure it's primary Os is Android but that's all you get. The Hd2 runs Android,Wm and Ubuntu,if that's not cool enough then i dnt knw wat is. IMO the HD2 will most likely become the phone of legends, something that fathers tell their kids about wen their not busy admiring its sheer brilliance, the one that broke all the rules *And yes i'm aware of the D'HD specs, which r tempting but not worth sacrificing the Hd2*
This is just the beginning teaser for Android superphone HTC & GSM. I see the HD2, EVO & D'HD pretty much being the same phone, different shell and different OS. In that light the format is a year old.
To quote them, HTC was/is brilliantly and quietly deliberate in having the Android-GSM masses salivate from across fences they could not or would not cross. It's almost classic Apple (and believe me, I hate both Apple and admitting it).
When the HD2 released, and lets be honest, gimped with WinMo, there was a secret vault deep in the bowels of HTC with a killer phone that could pretty much end the consumer refresh cycle for 3+yrs.
Just look at the G1. One of the secret beauties of Android is that in the right circumstances, you can stretch a platform way beyond it's intended life. An Android HD2/GSM EVO would have been such a beast.
They didn't release it because it was technically not viable, lol. No. Because doing so would have been an early check mate.
Yes the competition would either have been scorched in such a scenario or, heaven forbid, cornered into a cold war where they might actually have delivered real value versus their stock and trade hype.
At the same time though, HTC would have cannibalized their entire line-up/sales inbetween. Plus there was the issue of giving an allowance for symbiosis between the hardware, the market and the Android platform to come to fruition.
Now we have the D'HD, why? Because the other OEM's, Gingerbread, dual cores and GPU's are on the horizon.
The next 3-9 months will be beautiful.

I like the optimism and brand patriotism in that post. But unfortunately due to the amount of sheep who see the iPhone as the be-all and end-all of mobile technology, the platform if used to it's full potential still wouldn't have been able to take away a decent enough chunk of the iPhone sales.
The main reason is marketing. Apple have an army of marketing geniuses, with a bank balance to replace the ocean with. Coupled with the "elitist" angle that apple have, people have, do, and will continue to buy them because they don't know any better. If anyone saw the HTC Evo vs iPhone 4 video, you'll know what I mean - because it's the unfortunate truth.
When the HD2 came out, HTC were still relatively unheard of in the grand scheme of things. The Desire is what bought them into the open (at least in the UK anyway, despite a good marketing effort with the Hero).
The sad reality of it all, is that HTC could cram a 2GHz dual-core CPU, 3D screen, 2GB RAM, 64GB high-speed flash and a 720p display, all running on Honeycomb into a phone the size of an HD Mini, and people would still go for the Apple phone because it's Apple.
If the original iPhone was released today - I still reckon it would outsell most other smartphones in the public sector.
I still chuckle to myself when the iPhone came out without MMS, and then Apple did something revolutionary and put MMS into a software update, and the world was alight with joy and praise!
Yet I'd had MMS on my SonyEricsson T68i a clear 6 years prior!
I had HD2...i sold it 2 month ago waiting for something like Desire HD...Now I'm waiting with my dummy in a pocket
Numbers are numbers. DHD is better in CPU,GPU,ROM,RAM,Camera,Video. OS is relative...depends who likes what. I prefer Android against WM 6.5... But, i would be almost perfect if they put SLCD and Aderno 220 in him...then there would be nothing better...but word "better" is relative...
I still have my HD2 (and HD) and considered porting it to Android but in the end I opted to keep it running WM and popped for the Galaxy S.
The Galaxy S is a great phone with some beautiful features but I do miss my HTC branded phone.
At the time I considered the Desire but needed something slightly bigger and with more features and seeing as the Evo didn't come to the UK, as said instead I chose the Samsung.
Now the Desire HD is coming I've been looking close as to what it may give me over the Galaxy S.
Apart from it's slightly larger screen I can't find anything that will draw me away and that worries me.
As said, I miss HTC Hardware and Sense. The new line of Sense looks better but is it enough.........
I am currently using a HD2, and well, after 10 months of usage, WM6.5 is practically crap: Many essential softwares which are needed were not preinstalled; even messaging application was crap... Internet browser was as slow, most importantly no flash... Then here comes the Android running on SD card... But still sucks big time, although the developers really put a lot of effort in it, but the lag, freezes, and incomplete applications are all making me feel more and more disappointed... Until the 15th of September 2010, when HTC revealed both DHD and Desire Z, my hope was relighted... A proper Android OS on a 4.3" screen... This is what I needed for long... The first thing I did was to preorder it immediately without even hesitating... From here I believe many can see how much hope i gave up on HD2... The disappointment was utter... Well, now I am just counting down everyday to my DHD reaching me... 20 more days to go~

Having neither the HD2 or the Desire HD and wanting a slice of the Android pie having whet my appetite with a Desire, what would you suggest?
I can get an HD2 for around £220 - £250 from eBay and run with Android courtesy of the devs, or I can fork out £470 on a native Android handset that does not seem to offer a great deal (for my use at least) over the HD2.
decisions, decisions ...
That's a toughy which only you can answer.....
Depends on how much you value some of the added benefits you can get with the dedicated Android.
I love my photography and although I have several cameras I still like to get the best out of whatever hardware is available.... That's one of the reasons I went for the Galaxy S over the Desire and now with the HD coming out.... well I'm still drawn to the Galaxy S.

Likewise but having been spoiled by Nokia I have reached the conclusion that anyone who is serious about using their phone for halfway decent shots when on the go should steer well clear of HTC!
Trouble is, the competition might have the hardware but the operating system is very dated. I want the bells and whistles Android has to offer but the hardware is lacking on this platform.
Android ported to HD2 will never be so smooth and good as Andoid on his original device. There will always be some little bugs and lags...and you'll never experience a true Android experiance... Better choose regular Desire than HD2 with Android... HD2 is made for WM

Agreed... That was one of the main reasons why I went for the Galaxy S over the Desire. The GS takes and shoots simply outstanding shots & video.
Maybe its just me but if you really want good pictures.....invest in a camera: s
The camera isn't fantastic but its decent and that's good enough the other features make up for it imo.

I dont think i could buy my next smartphone without this feature. The only upgrade i see that seems of any use to me is front facing camera. Htc i think you misssed bad on this one. In this world of such amazing technology we are all still at the hands of lawyers and greedy big red.
yeah I was really unimpressed as well. only thing I liked was the front cam.

I am actually kinda glad there aren't many things better about the incredible HD. One less phone i am tempted to waste an upgrade on.
If your looking for hardware, Droid Bionic or Moto Atrix. However I will be sticking with HTC forever. They make the best UI over both the other competitors (Moto/Samsung). And while I'm right with you on being disappointed, I will most likely be getting the Thunderbolt (IncHD)
I'm excited about upgrading this year and hoping that the Incredible HD will be the one I'll upgrade to. I just hope Otterbox makes a case for it <grin>.

I wish that HDMI out was a dealbreaker, but it doesn't seem like it (to me). I understand that our phones are systematically replacing our laptops and such, which is scary, but within that sentence is the word phone and that happens to be its main function after all, lol.

I am le sad
The "Incredible HD," now known as the Thunderbolt, ended up not even being HD (1280x720 or higher). The Bionic, with 960x540, is the highest resolution display coming for the foreseeable future, if you don't count the iPhone 4's 960x640 screen.
I am disappointed with how "HD" doesn't mean anything anymore.
I thought that HDMI was a deal breaker for me too, but I've looked at the HTC DNLA adapter that they make, and I don't think it is anymore. If I can wirelessly stream my 720p content to my TV with that adapter than I am pretty happy. Also the 2nd Gen Snapdragon is a pretty good step up from the inc.
Overall this is the right phone for Verizon to replace the Incredible with at the right time. People joining VZW and people coming off a 2 year contact this is a very attractive phone, but since most of us are in a 2 year contact. We all have almost a year left on it and with VZW changes to NE2 coming this is not the year to make us feel out dated with our Incredible, so really next year is the year to blow our Originial Incredible's SPECs outta the water.
Also if your itching to see how the HTC Thunderbolt feels, just install a custom Z rom, and you'll get a good feel for the new sense. I can't wait for a frankenrom to be made from Thunderbolt's framework, if its possible, that rom will fly.

The thunderbolt will have a front camera, and a 2nd gen 1GHz SnapDragon, which will obviously be able to be overclocked, how high, we don't know yet. So the only thing missing will be HDMI out. But with wireless HDMI breaking through, there may be a way to do it wirelessly by the end of this year.

The name HD is nowhere in the name for the phone. It was referred to as the Mecha (internal name) and Thunderbolt (official name). Incredible HD was just a name given to it by us "outsiders".
Although it does follow the ADR6300 (Incredible) and ADR3400 for the Thunderbolt
All of us bound to leave Defy one day to get something even better and this is something some of us might need to do sooner than later. I have to say Defy did serve me well as my first venture into smartphones. The very late buggy Android 2.2.2 release kind of dampened my appetite to keep using it for another six months.
The much talk about SGII and HTC Sensation some how don't appeal to me even though both are 10x better than Defy. Durability is not everything but it is a welcome addition design feature for a portable device such as handsets. After going through countless of phone reviews, comments, and opinions I decided not to go for a dual core CPU handset. Android is not going to be truly optimised to take advantage of both cores for sometime to come and also the lower battery usage of dual core CPUs are totally unfounded.
For my needs 1.2GHz or 1.4GHz single core CPU is more than adequate and perhaps a good investment as long as is ARM8 or ARM9 based chip. Also next phone must have 1GB of RAM and with at least a 4" (qHD) screen size. In fairness Motorola's qHD quality is far better than of HTC offerings. My priority needs for a portable device is reading (i.e., books, pdf files, and internet), writing (i.e., Text Messaging, Email, and short posts to internet), and occasional videos. I've been enjoying youtube over wifi with Defy 2.2.2 that never bothered to try on 2.1.
The only handset available in the UK that comes close to my ideal specs for next phone is SE Arc. When I hold Defy in my hand and then the ARC it just doesn't cut it for me. The cheap plastic feeling is really off putting. Looking at the upcoming handset list there is nothing appealing either.
What is your next phone after Defy? Have you recently bought a new phone after owning Defy? Should we wait for Defy II after the experience with Motorola? After all Motorola did conduct a survey about durability with Defy users in the UK so they must have a plan for the next Defy version.
My next phone will be DEFY2 or DEFY+......Or Nexus 3
Sent from my toilet using my Motorola DEFY
Although I'm kinda frustrated because the phones with physical keyboard are never top notch (I would love one but...), I would either go for one or a Nexus 3.
PS: I would only consider an open phone (no locked bootloders and stuff)
Defy 2 or Atrix ...
Atrix should be so fine, but seems to be reallu overpriced ...
Next generation of Defy will be fine ...
I wonbder to have a little more CPU, a better camera and a fullHD hdmi output video signal ...
Thank you for the responses so far.
@SeaFargo
I consider Atrix as a good phone but two things about it put me off, other than being Motorola's. 1. NVidia Tegra chip: NVidia trying so hard to increase market share for gaming platform. I'm not into games so I feel paying too much for my need. 2. WebTop on Atrix not only makes this phone expensive but also harder for Motorola to update it with every major version of Android. Another feature that I don't need.
@ifu & daniel_loft
I think Nexus 3 is going to be a mind blowing phone and indeed I will be keeping my eyes on it. If it was at the right price and solid built quality then I don't mind waiting for another six months for my next phone.
After trashing my previous phone, the ruggedness of the defy is really important to me. The defy is actually a brilliant phone, once you take off the motorola software. The motorola froyo is just filled with bugs. Also for what ever reason the phone is really slow. Put cyanogenmod on however and you have a brill phone.
Whatever my next phone is, I wont be getting one that has a locked down bootloader and motorola software. For now I'm happy with my CM Defy
Olly
I will go for a waterproof device for sure.
As i am still pretty happy with my defy, i will have a good time waiting for the next generation Defy or a similar high-end waterproof smartphone.
I have no need for a bigger display. I would rather like to have an even smaller device with the same screen size.
a water resistant lg optimus 3d would be nice, replace the dual core with a powerful single core and its perfect for me

For what I hear most 3D feature of the phones are just gimmick. Your money, your choice.
Defy 2 with unlocked bootloader of course!
Next generation of Defy or maybe some other waterproof smartphone
These specs are welcome :
-1Ghz dual-core
-min.1900 mAh battery
-4.0" screen
-1GB RAM
-720p recording
-USB On the go
-HDMI out
-unlocked bootloder ..
Id really hate to turn this into a "defy 2 wishlist" thread. but here it goes
unlike most other people, id like to see LESS ports.
Delete the headphone jack. Bluetooth audio works fine
Delete the Micro-USB port. Induction charging works.
Make the battery door screwed/bolted on.
the only real wholes should be speakers and mics, which can be made very waterproof. I hate this vaugeness and caution when testing our phones waterproofness. The phone should be really rugged.
I think I'll ver the next defy version, whatever it will be. If there is none, then I'll yo for the Milestone 3

I just got a Defy, used, to fill in the time until my HD7 becomes useful ... as of now it can hardly do anything very well and I need a real smartphone.
Let me say that coming from a G2, then to the HD7, and now the Defy, this is the little phone that could! It feels tiny but there's something to be said for a small phone.
And Android is really shaping up to be a highly-functional OS!
This is a great little phone. Can't wait to get rid of MotoBlarghhhh.

so seriously how long was the one x htc flagships phone for, they seem to be bringing out bigger and better all the time!
one x+
this new htc j
im not overly impressed i thought me one x was gunna be flagship for a while yet, why not make what u have better rather than replacing,,
cnuts
It's still the flagship
the J is not out anywhere but Japan and the One X+ is just a tiny refresh of the same damn thing with the same damn software
but no lets all hug and cry

think of it this way if ur willing to pay more and get a 64GB version you will get few extras with it
its a smartphone company, its all they do, unlike apple, samsung, sony, google and the rest of the damn world
believe me when i tell you Tegra 3 is already at the maximum of its architectural limit, 1500 or 1700mhz will not make a different, as for the GPU if you are are rooted we have unlocked it long ago
yesterday we OC test GPU OC beyond 520mhz and got no benefits, the chip is already bottle-necked by it's bandwith
HTC is following two line, Tegra and Snapdragon
it terms of Tegra the next flagship will be the Tegra 4
Still feels like a flagship phone to me, i still have a great sense of satisfaction when i hold/use the phone and the smoothness of JB and the quality of the screen even after owning it for 6 months! Also how everything has come along with the UI since original release. This is still the flagship!!!!

I have to disagree hamdir...
GPS Yes, with A-GPS support and GLONASS . There is a new chip in town.
Its a huge refresh for me, (emphasis on me) who is using the phone as his primary navigation device. (daily about 1 hour) Sometimes more on long runs/drives.
GLONASS on it could do me wonders.
GPS is good but could be better I already owned a hybrid GPS and GLONASS device and it was better.
Having the money I would do the switch . Again emphasis on the I.

and did you not know it missed GLONASS and AGPS when you bought it?
hence it's a tiny refresh, the basic design, software and main features did not change, only improved slightly, not is denying its improved but it certainly does not replace
for many people its not even worth the extra cost (if they are buying the One X right now)
@ Hamdir; The J Butterfly might get a Verizon release in the US.
I still consider the HOX a flagship handset (For android anyway, not thinking about the new Windows handsets here), the One X+ has such minute 'upgrades' that it's laughable, it's only been tweaked a little bit and as Hmadir said the J Butterfly is atm a Japan only release until Verizon possibly get it for the US.

we will know if it comes on the 29th as a Google Nexus and even if it did, it doesn't replace HTC's flagship
There is internal discussion at HTC about the so many phone release its true, seems like they are split in two camps, but all i'm saying the current One X was not suddenly rendered "outdated" it still has the qualities of the flagship and still getting both firmware and app support as we go, its not HTC's fault if you can't resist the urge of having the "latest and greatest"
If they suddenly released the One 2X, with SLCD3 Tegra4 and 13MB camera after 6 months of outing the One X, than yes i would be seriously pissed
HTC's flagship should have the best of all technology and new features, a new HTC sense, new Android, new design, a global release, a new SOC, a new screen to be considered a flaghsip, im pretty sure the J falls into this category (except Sense) but so far it doesn't seem HTC is willing to go global with it, if they do they will have to throw their entire stock of the just announced One X+
5 months I would say for the UK- what a joke.
Then HTC wonder why people think (and they think) they have no strategy except to react to the shinier phones.
To be honest it seems in Android land, 6 months is about the max any device remains 'flagship'.... Given mobile phone contracts are ever increasing in length (duration) to subsidise handsets, it's a bit of a gip when your new killer phone is usurped after such a short time.
Does it make your purchase any less affective, not really... But it is certainly a total buzz kill.
iOS users get 12 months.
Windows mobile users (excluding those who purchased the Nokia Lumia 900 in the US as Nokia came late to the windows phone 7 party) generally get 18 months.
BB users get at least 12 months (often 18) too.
So yeah, 6 months as King of the Hill isn't great (especially from the same manufacturer), and actually it's less than that if you factor in other manufacturers of Android devices who out pace each other incrementally.
hamdir said:

This is true, if it was part of the Nexus range it won't impact upon HTC's flagship line

I remember seeing a Press Release from HTC saying that in 2011 they diluted the market with too many handsets and that in 2012 they were only going to release a few, their 'latest & greatest'... so much for that plan!
If they suddenly released the One 2X, with SLCD3 Tegra4 and 13MB camera after 6 months of outing the One X, than yes i would be seriously pissed

Yes if they released an outdated device and called it a flagship you could be pissed.
This is what SONY was doing and maybe still is . Remember the first Xperia (I do ) overpriced piece of garbage, when phones had standard multitouch (hero, desire, nexus one and etc) this device more expensive then all, was and still is missing it.(software emulation my ass)
But then again, when you bought it, you could know it. (And there was other parts in SW that sucks bla bla to the OT)
fair enough about the tiny part, but we are discussing what is an HTC flagship to begin with
the One X, X+ and J are all flagships, ie: the upper end of the spec list of HTC's products, not to mention the most widely praised and respected by the media and gets their most attention
judging from my time in elevate, it does seem the situation is confusing, HTC itself do not have clear boundaries and everyone is asking them to define them
more over it seems their choice of SOC is also not a deep rooted decision, if i had to throw a wild guess, HTC only chose Tegra 3 because Qualcomm did not have a quad core ready and they had to counter the upcoming Quad SGS3
In fact the One X Tegra 3 seems much more important to Nvidia (they use its picture in every Tegra 3 occasion), than Tegra 3 is important to HTC (which for them its just another quad SOC)
They also wanted to open up to other SOC vendors just like Samsung does by releasing the same device on three different SOCs, which at the time seemed to give great commercial margins to Samsung
Everything the One X was, seemed a bid to counter Samsung, when in fact it had nothing to do with the values of samsung, in reality its more of an iPhone counter in terms of priorites (fancy build quality, refined UI and amazing screen)

It's understandable that HTC wanted to strike while the iron was hot, the HTC Sensation was a brilliant phone but was trounced by the Galaxy S2 in sales figures and reviews.
They didn't want the same thing to happen again with their new One range so they rushed it a little bit and put it out there imho. But nether the less, the Samsung Galaxy fanboys made sure that the S3 beat the HOX is sales figures and reviews when I don't believe it deserves to.

I would forbid AMOLED ... seriously nothing that has the current generations of AMOLED or its monstrosity called Pentile Matrix cant be called a flagship, in no company... I mean to buy on such higher rate degrading display or the non existing quality. Am still laughing at ppl telling me that they also have 320PPI....
if htc sticks to IPS, or SLCD or the second gens etc, no way I would switch again back to Samsung ...
Btw I would go for the Evo 3D in the time of SGS2 ... That phone was cheap , fast, great display, heavy and big ... more like a weapon, but higher res and 1GB more as the Sensation.
As its now I think I am set for 1 or maybe even 2 years without requiring a new device. Which I couldnt say with the previous generations phones I had. Even though they were Flagships as well. Lets say SGS.

yes its good u brought up the Sensation, the S2 was better than it to be honest except the build material, keeping in mind the SGS2 had true 1:1 pixel density, something i can't say about the SGS3 its in no way no how better than the One X
but the Sensation was supposed to be the flagship right?
For me one trip to the store was enough to tell me its not worth upgrading my Desire HD, the screen was actually worse it had a very bad refresh rate and ghosting, the initial sense 3.0 stayed insanely and horribly sluggish for over 8 months, build and design very similar and the camera almost the same, it was only the SOC which was much better but badly supported in the initial firmware
The Sensation did not shine until the ICS update was pushed, in fact the performance nearly doubled with the ICS update and then you could see what the Senation was all about
And like Pagot said, they polarized their fans with the dual Evo3d/Sensation release, but for me the Evo3d is the better deal, the best ever build device by HTC i'm still preplexed until today at how much it have costed them to build the thing, it was "shimmering" with fancy higher grade perfectly cut material in every corner, and the screen in 2D mode was massively better than the Sensation with 60hz refresh rate, when the Evo3d was being cleared out of stock pre the One X release, it literally sold like hot cakes in Lebanon, the main vendors couldn't keep up with the demand
and just as the Sensation example, Sensation XE did not replace it as a flagship, both were the flagship just the XE was the newer repackage
HTC will stick to IPS they have never been fans of Samsung or Amoled, especially after all the praise they got for the One X display, remember how they dropped Amoled by re-releasing the Desire with SLCD (i actually switch my phone to the SLCD version)
Not this crap again! Yes, stand still HTC. Don't refresh your devices and let the competition surpass you with superior specced products!
And then no doubt the masses will complain that HTC aren't innovating and their product lineup is stale! FFS!

Same goes for the Sensation XL, that was step down if ever there was one! Infact, all HTC adverts for a while and advertising in general toted the XL, so I'd say for a very brief few months the XL was their 'flagship' handset.

I guess it's what you upgraded to the Sensation from... if it was a Desire HD then it was a bit of a jump back until ICS FOTA, but as I came to Sensation from my old Desire, that was a big step up. Takes all kinds I guess...
Yes the ICS update really took the Sensation into a world of it's own! Never really got to play around with the Evo3D, I think the Sensation was released slightly ahead of it here in the UK, so I'd already nabbed my Sensation before the Evo3D was released. The screen had to have a 60hz refresh rate I'm assuming as it'd be halved when the 3D effect was on? So anything less than 30/25hz refresh rate would've made the thing look really choppy!

yes ofcourse the Evo had to have 60hz for 3D but there was no excuse for less on the Sensation both the Desire HD and Desire had better screens in terms of refresh, in fact the Desire SLCD had the best screen in terms of all, view angles and black levels included
