[Q] Bonsai back to SFR steps - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Alright, I feel like an idiot having to ask this. I am on Bonsai 4.1.1 with their kernel, EC05, and the Bonsai recovery. I want to go to the new CWM 3101 with SFR 111 and their kernel.
So, I am thinking these are my steps;
backup
wipe 3x (I only wiped cashe)
flash SFR 111 from Bonsai recovery (will this include their kernel?)
flash CWM 3101
reboot
Is that the right way to do this?

Recovery nandroid restores ??

Ok, when I restore back to my stock rom it keeps the kernel wtf. Do I need to flash the stock kernel? If I wipe before nand restore it gets stuck on splash screen.
I backedup stock rom on 3.0.2.5. Then proceeded to load midnight rom which changed my recovery to 3.0.0.6 wtf. So took a backup of midnight then restored original rom. Tip that I knew my kernel didn't change was boot animation within the stock animation. The recovery went back to 3.0.2.5 Confused. I use amon recovery on my evo since clockwork never paired well. Now once again clockwork is giving me headaches on the epic this time.

NAND backups DO NOT back up kernels and never have. Anyone who informed you that they did was incorrect.
Thanks for the answer. On amon recovery they do. I can switch between eclair, froyo, and gingerbread without flashing a kernel since they are in the nand. Sorry 1st with the epic rooting.
Do I need to wipe anything before restoring

3.0.2.8 on Bonsai 4.1.1 does. I thought the new 3.0.2.5 does also, no?
The new 3.0.2.5 does back up kernel so just root with 3.0.2.5 and you won't have that problem

[Q] Help! Can't flash anything!

I searched but couldn't find this particular problem; any help would be greatly appreciated.
Over the last few days I've downloaded midnight 5.5 and the new Urban fury (each three times; 2 times from different computers and once from the phone) and everything I flash just hangs at the Samsung boot screen. I've odin'ed back to EC05 and tried, always wiped everything 3x....nothing is working.
I can restore a previous backup just fine but that's all that works. I'm on the EC05 modem but also tried with the EF02 and EF10 (?)...the update from 02 anyway. I'm using the purple nurple for recovery.
Any ideas because I'm fresh out. Thanks!

Did you odin to stock EC05 or just the modem?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
I guess that part wasn't clear; I odin'ed the whole ROM and it switched me back to the EC05 modem in the process.

Aren't those EXT4 ROMs? You need to run the EXT4 conversion script first. CWM 3.1.0.1 does not convert for you like the older clockworks.
That's a good point. I'm not sure how that works but before the odin ordeal I was on EXT4 and tried wiping and flashing. After odin'ing I suppose it would switch back to RFS but how then does that handle my CWM restore as it was EXT4 when it was backed up? Does the restore change the file system as well?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Just to cover all of my bases I downloaded and flashed the RFS2EXT4.ZIP. I assume that it worked, at least it backed up and flashed to "complete" but after wiping and attempting to flash Midnight again it is still hanging at the Samsung screen..

Restore your system to a working condition with no FCs, run the RFS2EXT4, don't wipe, flash Midnight. The problem with restoring a nand from EXT4 onto an RFS is the new CWM restores the kernel as well which would be EXT4 only. So anytime you need to restore from a Nand, choose advanced restore and restore data.
I tried re-flashing after getting back to a stable backup but still had no luck. I then downloaded Frankenstein ECO5OCE directly to the phone, wiped 3x and flashed it and it booted up with no problems. I'm still not sure what the problem was with the other two. It's hard to believe that all 6 were bad downloads. I think you're probably on to something with the file system train of thought.
Either way, I'll give this ROM a try for a while. Thanks for all your help.
per the 5.5 thread - Bonsai recovery works best with the 5.5 Midnight fixed. CW wasn't working so great for lots of people.
Thanks for pointing out the problems others were having. I actually was able to flash Frankenstein fine and SRF 1.2 fine today. At least I know that my phone's not jacked; I'll try Midnight again shortly I'm sure. I've always had good luck with Rob's ROMs. Thanks again everyone for the help.

[Q] Installing Kernels

So i see y King said u must flash a kernel right after u flash a rom. I thought i had genocide installed but i was sadly mistaken. So here is the scenario. I have sfr 1.2 with a stock kernel. In order to install genocide kernel..should i wipe evertything ...3 times of course...re flash sfr 1.2...then flash genocide immediately after or is there another way? Thanks...
Just flash the kernel. There is no need to wipe data/system and flash 1.2 again. Also, actually most ROMs do come with a kernel however 1.2 doesn't. Make sure you read the OP and it will always say what you need to do. I also advise flashing the journal on zip for extra stability
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA Premium App
Ok..so you are suggesting to go into cwm correct...and flash kernel? Also, where can i read up on journaling?
NvM....forgot the rules..look first ...ask later lol...i read up on it...thanks for suggestion!! I downloaded the journal on zip after reading up on what journaling is..gotta love this forum!!

Epic 4g touch help a noob!!!! Lol :-)

Dont know if this has been covered before... sorry if it has im very new to rooting, and also careful and don't wanna brick so i do read instructions I have an epic 4g touch and im running sfhubs fd26 rooted ics rom, my question is how do i apply some ofthese different themes for example tiffs twist of honey theme and i know its not safe to flash roms from ics so what is the best way to get a custom rom such as blazer rom what steps wld i take to go from fd26 to blazer rom?? I know that was two questions sorry I wanna start trying new roms and i didnt know if u go about applying themes the same way u wld flash a rom i use regular odin on pc.... THANKS IN ADVANCE I WANNA ALSO SAY I LOVE THIS FORUM AND CANT WAIT TO LEARN ALL I CAN AS THEIR ARE SOME VERY TALENTED DEVS ON HERE THANK YOU... Do i just go back to gingerbread and flash the same way i got to ics to begin with and if so is it el29 i hould go bck to?
Sent from my K1 using xda premium
For both applying themes or going to a different rom, you will want to Odin the el26 kernel. If applying a theme for an ics rom, remember to flash a ics kernel before rebooting.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
Im on an ics rom right now i watched a qb king video that said u sould go bck to gingerbread before flashing anything... are u sure all i have to do is flash the el 26 kernel and why? Im on fd26 ics right now i have fd26 everything modem, etc... ##confused## : (
Sent from my K1 using xda premium
If you are wanting to flash a theme on the ics rom, then all you need to do is odin the el26 kernel, which is a gb kernel. El26 kernel has been shown to be the safer kernel to flash anything when you are on ics. After you odin the kernel, go into recovery, wipe cache and dalvik and then flash your theme. After you've flashed the theme, make sure you flash an ics kernel, as the el26 kernel will not work properly on ics. If you want to go back to a gb rom, again odin the el26 kernel, boot into recovery, wipe data, cache, and dalvik, and flash the gb rom and reboot.

flashing problems

ok I've rooted and installed clockwork recovery as per the instructions in the how to. Still each time I go to flash a rom I get nothing but the galaxy sII logo and it hangs there indefinitely. Did I miss a step in these instructions ? I'm on EL29 baseband if that helps.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v7pWjmKCsoc
those are the instructions I used. and I don't think I've missed a step. I've reverted back to stock and re rooted my phone and installed clockwork. How do I get roms to actually flash?
Depends, what are you trying to flash?
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda app-developers app
I see the link in your video is just for rooting, but you can get into CWM? did you try the auto root EL29+CWM? Also, if you are following to Devs instructions on how to flash the ROM you should be good to go. have you tried wiping everything first or just installing it over the previous ROM? i suggest downloading Calkulin's Format All zip. flash it before you flash a ROM.
Link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1527041 its at the bottom of the 1st post.
Link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1342728
is this what you used for CWM?
yeah those are the things I used actually to get clockwork. It'll let me use clockwork, wipe everything install whatever but when I go to reboot to start it up it hangs at the galaxy s2 screen. I let it go for 2 hours last night. Any rom honestly would be fine at this point. I'm pretty familure with twrp, cwm, and 4ext from the evo 3d but nothing works with this phone.
Would the steps for flashing a rom say blazer for example be
Wipe data, dalvik, and chache.
flash zip from sd reboot? like normal or am I missing a step with another kernel or something?
it would be the same. but I use the Calkulin's Format All zip to do it for me. I know you do get a longer boot then normal because its building delvik cache but not two hours. have you tried downloading the ROM to your computer and then transfering it over to your phone? I had an issue a few days ago because of a bad download(good thing I had my nandriod). What CWM do you have? 5.0.2.7?
yeah thats the only way I do it actually. D/l from the laptop and copy it to sd. then use calkulins to wipe everything and it still just sits.
I just googled "flash ROM boot loop" it came up with something. What is your default launcher? Some people have had problems if they use for say go launcher or another launcher and not have one set as default. On calkulins ROM.

I am still on the stock rom. only thing I can do is root it with odin and and add clockwork mod with e4gtauto prog. I still have no idea whats going on.
So your on stock TW launcher?
Try flashing a different kernel. Like rogue, that is another recovery based off of CWM. That's what I use, well I use both and haven't had a problem. Another thing is get an MD5 checksum program for your laptop and check the file sum for integrity. Sorry it took me awhile to respond, finally have a day off.

I actually tried flashing one wth mobile odin that I found on the cyanogenmod page. It booted to the android text logo and that was it. so thats a step in the right direction. Should I just flash it through clockwork after I flash the rom like normal?
That's your problem. If your flashing a GB ROM you need a GB kernel. If your flashing an ICS ROM you need preferably EL26 kernel then use CWM to flash the ROM and kernel. flash the rogue kernel in the kernel repository then try flashing a GB ROM. After that then you should be good to go.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda app-developers app
I appreciate the help so much dude. so When I get home I should flash the kernel through odin then boot into recovery n flash the rom n I should be good? or do I just boot into recovery n flash the rom then the kernel? sorry about so many q's.
No problem. That's what the forum is for. let me know how it works out for ya.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda app-developers app
And yes flash it through Odin and boot into recovery and flash your ROM. you can also flash the ROM in CWM and then flash the kernel right after you flash the ROM. It seems to be easier in CWM then Odin.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda app-developers app
I must be an idiot or my phone doesn't wanna do it. Tried flashing the kernel and aokp a few times now and got nothing. I must be using the wrong stuff for the Job.
Get yourself back to stock with cwm. Pick a ROM and follow the directions in the op for that specific ROM. If anything seems unclear watch one of qbking77's videos on how to install that ROM. Qb has NEVER steered me wrong.

That's what I've been telling him. Do you have anything else that maybe I'm forgetting? Maybe EL26 direct boot?
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda app-developers app
thats kinda what I've been doing. I got cyanogen to boot with the rogue et recovery fb27 and cm9 but market won't actually work. so I went back to stock. I actually used qbking's videos to start with and followed them and it still just hangs. This is the process I'm using.
flash kernel/recovery through odin.
calkulins wipe all
flash rom
flash gapps if needed for said rom
reboot.
I've also tried without the 1st step.
I've tried flashing the el26 kernel that everyone seems to say is safe through odin and that boots me into the recovery and I try to wipe then flash and it still does nothing. am I just flashing the wrong intitial kernel to begin with? I can't figure out why Im having this problem now since I've had multiple rooted phones in the past with no issues.
But now I'm back on stock gingerbread again completely just rooted and then the did the e4gtauto to get a recovery.
