I've started using my phone for watching movies at night. The soft key backlight is blinding me!
I've looked around for information on this problem and the closest solution I've found is the LED hack on the app market. The problem is, it requires root. Has anyone found a different way around this issue? Would temp-root work?
I used leds hack on my dinc for a good while till I had to replace my screen. Once I took the phone apart, I unplugged the leds from the bottom. If you're ok with voiding your warranty, go for it.
But I don't think it'll be possible without perm root.

Keep a roll wherever you watch the movies...
Try changing the angle of the device slightly, if you can. I've noticed the backlighting on the softkeys aren't consistent and for them to be at their brightest, they have to be facing directly at you.
There is a free app in market called screen filter. it will allow you to toggle your backlit keys.

I just found this thread, looking for a solution.
Neither Screen filter, nor LED hacks work on my rooted Dinc2, and the backlight for the softkeys is always on, even when I put the clock into night mode. Is it supposed to be this way, or are they designed to turn off in certain situations?

I'm running the Virtuous Unity 2.3.5 Rom, and it has a glitch in it that I can live with.
The soft key lights don't work at all. I've gotten so used to it, I hope that when they find out what the problem is, they turn it into a on/off function instead of removing the glitch.

that is, if you want them to work.

My wife's evo is running stock rooted 1.47 with some basic battery saving tweaks.
I noticed today that her capacitive buttons aren't lighting up. Anyone else had this issue? Is there a setting somewhere that controls them?
EDIT:
Seems like they sort of work. Sometimes they light up sometimes they don't. I'll try to figure out if there is a pattern to it.

Yes, as even a cursory search would have told you, they are controlled by the light sensor.
I believe i have a problem with the ambient light sensor on my G2 for what ever reason my back-light on the capacitive keys on the bottom of the screen when in a decently lit room keep coming on or off its work fine in a dark setting as it should but when i have both of my g2's side by side in the same room one stays on and the other keeps going on and off. I know this may be and most likely is a hardware issue but i purchased the phone on ebay so t-mobile will not let me exchange and HTC currently does not offer repair for the device yet. I was wondering if an RUU has been released yet and maybe flashing the phone would solve if it a software issue. I have factory reset the phone multiple times but it does not remedy the problem. does any one have any suggestions?
Is the RUU released yet?
Any one? ?

This is linked to the keyboard backlight, they both go on and off at the same time. I'm getting the same problem too on my DZ, the light sensor doesn't seem to be setup properly because it keeps going off and back on again (even if auto brightness is set to off).
Firstly I love this phone. After working through 4 Samsung Galaxy S's to finally ask to be switched away from it to this, I was very happy.
This phone is rock solid.
BUT. I have a problem. I like to use maps or nav in my car. I have the phone plugged in but after the timeout period the screen goes dim. I'm normally OK with that but the dim setting on this phone seems to be ridiculously dark!
To your knowledge, without rooting it to get the Cyanogen settings, is there a way to brighten the dimmed level of brightness?
I have tried disabling the auto-brightness and bumping it up but still after the timeout period it dims very dark.
How about a toggle or widget to keep the screen always on? There are quite a few available I reckon. I know its one extra step to carry out whereas you are looking for something more automated. Maybe there is an app that can let you make a list of apps that enable screen always on?... Not sure about that but worth a look eh?
i do use a switch with Extended Controls widget.
the problem isnt that it dimms, it's that when it does dim it is far too dark.
When the samsung went to the dim setting it was still viewable.
If i remember right when i had it plugged in it would not dim if i was viewing maps.
anyways, the phone as it is is useless when it dims. i can touch the screen to bring back the brightness. I can set the timeout period to 30 minutes, but all of this requires that i re-activate the screen to bring it back.
i guess i am seeing one more reason to root the device. i'm nervous about rooting and would prefer to not have to if i dont need to.

This is a characteristic of the software that you are using. The software needs to establish a WAKE LOCK in order to keep the screen bright. If it isn't working, then there is something wrong with the software you are using. I suggest using COPILOT for navigation. It works properly.

agreed, the software is probably working properly. google navigation does not time out. google maps does and they dont give you an option to have it not time out when plugged in. silly if you ask me.
i dont mind that as much as i mind how much it dims.
Does anyone else find that the desire z dims too dark?
anyways, i may be beating a dead horse here. trying to get blood from a stone and all that.
well if anyone has any other ideas that would be helpful. thanks for the suggestions thus far.
So I can't seem to figure out why the Soft Touch Button are on, or mostly not on on the One X.
In a dark room they are not usually on, run some app or open something on the phone and they seem to activate.
Anyone else getting this??
They should activate/deactivate depending on the amount of surrounding light.
Tested it myself, with a flashlight on the phone the lights went of. When I removed the flashlight and back in the dark, the lights turned on.
Yes, I got the same result as Foggy79. I just want to know if I can turn if off manually?
Probably not (maybe with a custom ROM, but I doubt that)
I wanna know how to turn them off. When watching a video in the dark.... they stay on, when they should turn off when video is being played full screen.

Use this Rom :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1625816
With PKMN Tweaks integrated in this rom, you can control soft key led back light :
* Always on
* Always off
* Turn on when the dim light, turn off when strong light

would rather not go flashing roms to get this.
And how would the tweak help? either it's always on, always off or the last option which would keep the lights on under dim conditions.
What they need to do is add a timeout. like on the Galaxy series phones. 2 seconds or 7 seconds. then it shuts off, when you touch the screen it turns on again.
It's just bad designing and/or programming.

That'sa great idea, which I can't believe I didn't think of. I have been having the opposite problem: the soft key lights always stay on. However, when I held up the phone to a bright light, they turned off. So, they are working.
Still, it takes a really bright light to achieve this; I wish I could fine tune the behavior. I tried an app that stated it would control the keys but it did not work (and my phone is not rooted).
I also see in ancola66's post that the custom ROM allows automatic dimming only in "strong light," so apparently the behavior I am seeing is normal. I wish it would take less strong light to activate dimming/off as my lights never seem to go off, as I stated.
Thanks for these informative posts.
Reading in bed with Aldiko
It mostly annoys me when I'm reading in bed with Aldiko. Aldiko is a great reading app that lets you adjust the lights the phone emits to the lowest possible, so I can read in the dark without disturbing my wife.
However, on this phone I have the keys glaring in my eyes, way brighter than the letters of my book.
I wish I could switch them off somehow.
I thought the soft lights will only turn on when phone is in dark place? Correct me if I'm wrong.

Exactly.. That sucks when lying in bed reading next to your beloved.. It should only light when touching the screen like the s3..I don't need those lights when I sit and read a book or something

There are ways to disable them. Mostly(maybe a must) if you are ROOTED.
Apps that ppl said that were able to shut them off were screenfilter or how its called. Search through the forums here.
Or you can edit the framework-res file to disable them on sense roms. If Interested I will search it from here somewhere.
Or for CM check my signature (there are 2 lines, not the one about the UV...)
They annoy me too. I recently began watching some videos in bed (streaming from desktop) because I temporarily gave away my laptop. They are very bright in the dark, I wish there was an option to turn them off permanently (yes, I know it's possible with custom ROMs, but I'm still not ready to root yet).
Also, the display is still too bright for my taste - lowest brightness should be lower. Although it's pretty good compared to other screens. In my opinion, the lowest brightness is also very important, just as max. brightness.
Has anyone else noticed that when in a dark area, pressing the main button will turn on the screen but it will then automatically and immidiately turn off?
Several times I've gotten into a battle with the phone only to lose, turning it on and it turns off, then turning it on again and so on...
To compound the issue, in these situations it seems that double tap is signifigantly less responsive to activate the screen as well.
I'm pretty sure this phone is using some sort of facial recognition, it has smart stay doesnt it? I think it has gravity/accelerometer to turn on the screen when you pull it out of your pocket. In the back of my mind I'm thinking that since it cant see me it is shutting off but this doesnt seem consistent...
I'm running stock rom, rooted with twrp. Any ideas?
I have not experienced that. Did your G3 do that out of the box?
Sent from my LG-D851 using Tapatalk
Never heard of it. Screen is set to auto off in 30 seconds. Change it to 2 min and you should be good. If u running without a case then maybe the hand is touching the edges of screen this will also shut screen off in double tap.

I didn't notice it until the last week or so. but I kind of feel like that was because I hadn't used the phone that much up until then. I didn't make any major changes to the phone immediately before I started noticing it either, I had already had it rooted for about a week. I feel like the stock rom does have some glitches to it.
The G3 does have a "smart screen" feature that detects your face (Settings > Display). Disable that and see if it helps.
I've not run into this in the dark but have when I try and use my arm band holder when running. The holder covers the ambient light sensor so the phone thinks it was accidentally turned on like in a pocket and shuts right off. Super annoying.
Noticed similar behavior when the phone is in my bike mount at night. Basically it's acting like the proximity sensor is covered. In my bike mount's case, it is covered by a clear screen cover, but normally that doesn't trigger the proximity sensor. But when it's very dark out (not under a street light etc.), it seems to think it's blocked and turns itself off. Annoying.

Had that issue when I was using the lock screen face unlock. In the dark it didn't see my face and then it shut off. Setting is in lock screen section

Lol.
I have the same issue EVERY night. Why is that? It's very annoying
Same issue here
it seemed to resolve itself when I factory reset my phone
but after I got my apps reinstalled from my google backup it started again
so it seems like it's a software issue - not sure to which app it is related to
let me know if you find a fix - this is quite annoying
Me too. I've been facing this issue at night, when it's very dark.
Me and my buddy were in the car during a roadtrip and it was very dark, I mean like: No lights outside, no lights inside the car, the double tap feature didn't even work to begin with and whenever I tried to use the "Power Button" It would come on and then suddenly 'boom' Turn off, now this would happen a few times until it stays on. Weird...
I just experienced this myself, first time I've seen it happen in the 30 + G5's that I've sold. If it's in the dark it just doesn't turn on at all. I hope LG is fixing this. I'm about to Factory Reset it right now and hope for the best! Someone else mentioned that this is the only forum that is disccusing this issue. It must be a very few that are effected. I'm testing another one as we speak.
Has this issue been resolved? My friend's G3 also has this issue. Day time no problem. When it is dark the screen wont' stay on.
Same problem, no fix yet
Same problem here - Pointing it at any light and pressing the power button will turn it on. (As will plugging it into power). Tried tinkering with all sorts of settings (face recognition/auto dimming feature/etc) nothing worked. Tried factory reset, that didn't work either.
My issue started after i had my screen replaced (by a shady shop) who probably didn't do a good job of packing it back together....I'm going to see if I can have someone open it up and clean it out a bit..
I have the same issue on my G3. Even if you're under the covers in bed, the thing doesn't turn on until it gets light. It basically doesn't turn on in the dark through double tap and actually not even with the power button. It could become a safety hazard for someone in an emergency situation.
