I want my phone to vibrate or make a noise every couple of minutes if I have a new notification. I'm not always able to hear / feel it the first time and the only vibration setting I can seem to find is only two quick pulses.
I also noticed that the green status light doesn't flash if I get a text message, where if I have an email to my gmail account it does. Is there any way to change this?
I feel like I have to check my phone all the time without these.
Have a look at Tasker. I use it to watch for certain notifications and then play a sound or do something else to get my attention, without me having to look at the phone all the time. Telling it to wait for x time before the next action is also possible (and a whole lot more).

probably it will works
That's frustrating... Since tasker is about $7 I have to buy an app to provide functionality that my previous basic cheap phone had. I also found that there used to be a nice free app called 'MissedCall' that you could do it with, however it's no longer on the market. GRRR

There's a 'missed call deluxe' for $1
Or there's Missed Reminder which is free.
I think that's exactly what I'm looking for! Sweet thanks!
My recommendation is Light Flow - There is a free version in Market, perfect customization possible: set different LED Colors for Calls, SMS, Mail, Low Battery etc, set different repeating sounds, vibrations...

Hey, i was just wonder if this is normal or not but about 5 minutes after receiving a SMS the LED will stop flashing even though i have not turned the screen on yet to check it
is this meant to happen and if so is there a way in which i can change it to continue flashing any amount of time until i check my phone?
Thanks.
I think with the Handcent SMS app you can set 'reminders' to every 5 mins. So it should continually flash till you check it then.
I've not actually tried this but the theory is there!
thanks for the quick reply, but i was hoping there was a way with the default messaging program
Annoyingly, I don't think there is. I'd recommend having a look at Handcent though, it's a cool app.
that's rather annoying, but o well i guess, other then this I've been loving the phone
Try Missed Reminder from the market. Works good on my device.
I asked HTC about this, and it is is true, the LED flashes for 5mins then stops.
I didn't like the Handcent reminder simply because when it restarts the notification, it makes the sound like it's got another message. I just wanted to know I've got something to check rather than hear it go off every 5mins or whatever you set it to.
But this is a personal annoyance. I can see that many wouldn't mind this.
Missed Reminder was another option to definitely try to see if it's for you.
Thanks for the replies guys, I'll give Missed Reminder ago, seems odd that they wouldn't allow for a option to let it flash for longer, is this only for SMS or does it also stop after 5 mins for all LED notifications?
all notifications stop after 5mins. What's the point in having the led?

Yeah..5mins for sms/missed call...constantly if your battery is low
Are you guys sure that the LED stops blinking after 5 mins? In hTC's there is an option in settings (I forgot where exactly) which will allow you to set different times, 5,10,15 mins and even there is an option for continuous blinking. So please recheck the settings (in sound & notifications maybe) and then confirm it.
Thanks.

That was the case for Windows mobile phones. there is no option in android to set this.

That is so weird. Isn't there any solution for this?
The Missed Reminder app does the job. You can customise it quite a bit. I just set all notifications to blink the LED forever.

Tried this app, but doesnt work correctly. Sure it will continue to blink the LED, but the notification sounds do not work correctly - i.e they dont sound on reapeat alarms. Shame as it looked a nice app.
Message from developer
I have no plans yet to release a special version for 2.x at least not until I’ve got my phone updated to 2.1.
I love this phone...but for my purposes, having it on vibrate = having it on silent. I missed TWO job interview calls having my phone on vibrate in my pants! I barely had time to call 'em back today to set up an in-person!!!!
I found a program a few weeks ago to handle my volume problems....is there a program that handles the vibration problems??? I guess I'm one step away from changing the vibration to just one long vibrate for texts and calls....but this soft motor probably still won't help it out!
Anything? Or am I doomed to putting this on craigslist and waiting for the next big phone???

I think it agitates everyone pretty well actually.
To be on topic, though, I don't know of any apps, or software mods at all really, that will increase the power on the vibration. That's a hardware thing.

Really? Seems great to me. Way better than my previous HTC phones.
Apparently Light Flow has settings where you can set particular vibrations for particular notifications (i.e. how long & how frequent you want them). Haven't tested it myself, but I've read about it. Link. Perhaps if Light Flow doesn't work, try Sound Manager V2?

I tried light flow but I could never seem to get it to play nice w/Handcent.. It'd always stutter my ringtone. Even when I turned notifying for Handcent off...
On a table, it works fine. On a bed or couch or pocket...it's garbage. And I really didn't notice it until last week when I needed it on vibrate. Now, I wish I'd noticed it during the 30 day period of returning the phone....
Shoot!
as the title states, I would like to know if there is away that I am not seeing to disable the screen illuminating when I receive a notification (sms, email.. etc)
I don't like this feature, the phone already tells me via audio notification that I have received a message and I think it is a battery drainer (not matter how minuscule) I'd like to have some control over this...
With my screen off, it lights up when I receive a message and I would like to disable this function. I already have LED notification turned off...
I hope I was able to communicate my desire
Thanks in advance for your help

Oops, you got a free thanks. The way I dealt with it was to install Handcent and then disable the stock messaging application. But I'm on US Cellular and I'm not sure how much different our phones are. Handcent has MANY more features than the stock application as a perk also.

That is an alternative yes. I would like to keep the stock app though because it's been my experience to have lots of problems with third party messaging apps. For example, I am unable to use MightText while using some third party apps. Sometimes the apps update and have FC closes afterwards.
If you didn't mean to give me a thanks, can't you take it back... I mean if you really wanted too, don't get me wrong, I'll take all the thanks I can get!
I'd also be interested in this..I find it super anoying.
Edit: Gave in and installed Go SMS with a GSIII theme.
here's a solution if anyone is still looking for one

are you using the stock app? i know handcent has an option for that not sure about the stock app.
I personally use GoSMS (has plenty of options, keeping the screen off is one of them) and Light Flow (to control the LED, its an awesome app).
There are about 10 threads addressing the issue and there are no "fixes" for this.

When I receive a SMS, the phone wakes up.
Having a hard time finding the setting to turn it off...any insight?
bump for this - I don't see why the screen needs to come on every time a sms message comes in. I haven't seen this happen with email(exchange), gmail, GTalk, etc... so annoying to waste battery for no reason with the LED indicator enabled.
I've looked and looked and don't really see anyone complaining about this, which I find really strange.

bump - seriously no one cares about this wasting battery for no reason?
No one has found an answer? Just got the AT&T version and I do about 20,000 texts a month, so this is very annoying and wastes battery, ESPECIALLY since it has a notification LED.
I got so tired of it, that I just switched over to handcent.

Just called Samsung and he searched and put me on hold for a while and came back saying there is no way to change this. He recommended downloading a 3rd party texting app or seeing if there is an app that will do this :/
here is a fix from the Sprint GS3

Just tried to flash, didn't see any changes in the Messages settings. Not the screen toggle or mms server issue

It was annoying me as well, the only fix I found without switching to another app is to go to Settings in the messaging app and make sure everything is unchecked under Notifications. If you do this, you will no longer see new text messages in the notification bar, but if you want you can use Nova launcher premium that has an add on called Tesla unread plug in (it adds a number to a messaging shortcut when new sms arrives).
Hope this helps.
