as the title states, I would like to know if there is away that I am not seeing to disable the screen illuminating when I receive a notification (sms, email.. etc)
I don't like this feature, the phone already tells me via audio notification that I have received a message and I think it is a battery drainer (not matter how minuscule) I'd like to have some control over this...
With my screen off, it lights up when I receive a message and I would like to disable this function. I already have LED notification turned off...
I hope I was able to communicate my desire
Thanks in advance for your help

Oops, you got a free thanks. The way I dealt with it was to install Handcent and then disable the stock messaging application. But I'm on US Cellular and I'm not sure how much different our phones are. Handcent has MANY more features than the stock application as a perk also.

That is an alternative yes. I would like to keep the stock app though because it's been my experience to have lots of problems with third party messaging apps. For example, I am unable to use MightText while using some third party apps. Sometimes the apps update and have FC closes afterwards.
If you didn't mean to give me a thanks, can't you take it back... I mean if you really wanted too, don't get me wrong, I'll take all the thanks I can get!
I'd also be interested in this..I find it super anoying.
Edit: Gave in and installed Go SMS with a GSIII theme.
here's a solution if anyone is still looking for one

Hi guys.
Am running a stock Evo 4g, and when i receive text messages, the notification light does not flash. Iv made sure to check that is checked on in the settings menu, but for some reason more often than not ive an unread text message (SMS) but the notification led does not flash. the notification light flashes just fine for all other alerts, eg gmail.
also, am using the built in sms app. no third party sms/mms apps installed.
what gives?
regards,
asmd.
Did you check in the messaging app settings or just phone settings...I'm not sure but there might be something in there that has it turned off...I can't confirm cus I'm running miui and my settings menu is different than yours I'm sure

thanks for the reply.
have checked both menus. The setting menu as well as the messaging app menu. cant find anything that could have been turned off to set the notification led not to flash.
regards,
asmd.
googling for this only brings up my own post here at xda!!
wtf?? how can i be the only one with this problem?
am running stock, no root, a couple of games installed, skype, fb... no alternate core system apps. triple checked all settings, and yet it doesnt flash when i receive text messages.
*disgruntled*
asmd.
after a couple of resets, ive got the notification led back again.
really know what i did to get it working or what caused it to stop.
so summary, reset solved the problem. (after 3rd time)
Just so you know, the LED will stop blinking after 6-7 minutes of you receiving a text/MMS/missed phone call....
It's by design. A HTC rep told me it was to 'conserve' on battery power.... LED's don't use THAT much juice...
thanks for the reply.
i knew that.
my problem was that it wouldnt flash at all on receiving a new text message.
but its working now.
wish i knew what went wrong.
I'm trying to get this AT&T SGS3 set up for my wife (mostly stock firmware), and she wants something that has both repeating SMS notifications and the ability to have different notification tones for different people sending her messages. IT appears that "SMS Popup" supports this (but still allows her to use the default SMS app for normal reading and composing.)
However, I'm finding that the LED doesn't seem to work well with the application: No matter what "blink rate" I set, the LED will stay steady on. Even a custom blink rate of "1000ms on, 5000ms off" results in a steady, always on LED. As well, it seems impossible to get the LED color configured to something reasonable. For example, I configure magenta, and I get yellow. I configure yellow and I get white. I configure red and I get a bright cyan.
(When I configure SMS popup on the international SGS3 (i9300), the LED options work fine.)
Any suggestions?
Thanks
Gary
Not a solution, but it's not just you. Essentially, Samsung buggered up the implementation of the LED on the North American S3 and 3rd party devs are having a heck of a time working around it.

Has anyone managed to work around it yet? The source for SMS popup is GPL'd, so it'd be mostly trivial for me to patch in a fix (assuming a fix was known.)
If not, I guess I'll have to spend some time this weekend examining the LED support in the kernel and trying to reverse engineer whatever samsung did.
Fyi , the AT&T OTA that came out today changes the notification light to blink instead of being solid-on.

I'm confused... the stock firmware (from before this update) would blink on "stock" notifications (such as email, SMS, etc), and stay steady on the charging LED.
The issue, it seems, is with 3rd party apps that try to use the LED (such as SMS Popup) - in that case, the LED would get stuck ON.
Are you saying that this update resolves the stock on for 3rd party apps?
Gary
Use Liteflow. It will do everything you mention and it works correctly with the LED.

I'd prefer to avoid lightflow (and other system-wide notification handlers)... I've seen too many issues with it related to wakelocks.
(I know some people disagree with me about lightflow. That's nice and we are entitled to disagree on that, but please don't drag this thread into a discussion on the merits of lightflow, if it does or doesn't have issues, etc.)
Take care

To answer my own question, the OTA (LH9) does seem to resolve any LED issues from 3rd party apps... both blinking issues AND color issues.
If you are willing to dump the stock sms ap. It seems that after this latest firmware update, in Handcent sms the colors now work correctly. Also I am able to get some different blink rates. I have not tried many though.

At first I thought I was the only one suffering from this annoyance, but then I saw this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WgvTFu6UKJI
See, the problem is that whenever I send or receive a message, this icon pops up. At first I thought I was delusional, but then it repeatedly became clear that this was truly a bug. I managed to get a screenshot of it (which was really difficult considering that it only pops up for about half a second). I want to know if I anyone else has had this issue, and whether or not someone found a workaround from it popping up. Anyone at all?
Are you using Hangouts?
Nope! Stock everything, and unrooted. Using the HTC messaging app

Probably Carrier IQ for some reason tracking your location. My LG G2 does the same thing.

This bothered me as well, but I have since gotten rid of it. Granted that you're rooted, you can download an Xposed module called NotifyClean. It listens for "notifications" in the status bar, and you have the option to disable them. Download/install/activate the module, turn on the listening feature, and send a message. When you go back into NotifyClean, you'll see "Data Usage". Select that, then select "Data usage is running". It should highlight the selection in red, and ultimately get rid of the little annoying icon that shows up for a split second.
It seems that I'm not the only one having an issue. Well hopefully there's a better work around for this because I don't plan rooting my phone for a long time! Flashing roms and tweaks could be addicting haha! Hopefully someone finds a better fix to hide this annoying notification!

Yeah, take it from someone that flashed a ROM today and every mod/tweak I could find... it gets addicting. I spent 8 hours at my computer today going over various mods and personalizing my phone. Unfortunately, I can't think of anything to help with your issue that doesn't involve root. If you know what is causing the notification then you may be able to go into settings>apps>all and disable the offender?

I managed to get a screenshot, and I checked what app was causing it but it was a system app called "Data Usage". Anyone know how to turn off data usage notifications? Turning off data usage alert doesn't help
This is normal behavior. While it shouldn't be popping up, its normal as in that it is what is done when a SMS/MMS is sent while on WiFi.
You can locate the app through Application Manager and tap it to Disable Notifications. This doesnt require root or anything.
Taking shots in the dark here, but there is a data usage section under wireless & networks in settings. In that menu there is a toggle for 'alert me about data usage'. You can then drag a slider up and down to set the cap for when your phone warns you about data usage. Maybe yours is dragged to the very bottom so it alerts you about any data usage?
Unlikely because it would show up during everything, but worth asking. Maybe just disabling the notification toggle would work. Also, does your carrier ship with specific software to monitor data usage? If so then check all of those apps settings to see if anything has any effect.
It doesn't matter whether or not the wifi is on, it still annoyingly pops up. I meant that you really can't disable notifications as it is a system app

No, I don't think so. My S3 never did this. My phone is unlocked from HK

I read its some type of traffic usage. Someone here posted a picture of it here. Also I have an option on the ROM I'm running to hide that notification. O don't think its carrier IQ but then again.
I'd like for it to flash continuously when I have a missed message, call, VM, Whatsapp, anything-I-want.
Just like you can do with the *insert any other phone ever made here*.
It will flash for the moment I get a call or text but never any other time.
I have it turned on to do so in Settings. There's a secondary option to allow it for 3rd party apps or something like that, I get nothing for Whatsapp either.
I see plenty of threads on this but people only suggest 3rd party apps and rooting their phones.

Its the only way. Lightflow pro will let you put whatever color you want for whatever notification.

That's ridiculous. I don't see how manufacturers keep overlooking something so simple as a notification LED. It is not the first phone I have had this issue with. It is really helpful to look at my phone when the screen is off and know if I missed a call, email or text depending on the color. Spend so much time and money into doing other useless tasks, but simple ones often get overlooked. I'm not looking to root the phone just for an LED.
It does flash, just very infrequently. I do find the LED pretty much useless. My Note 2's indicator was very large and easy to see from a distance and from weird angles if the phone is sitting somewhere. Imo this one is hard to notice unless you're holding the phone and looking directly at it.

I did get it to flash with handcent with a custom color and blink rate. Still cant get it to work with gmail, but havent tried lightflow yet. Agreed though, you can barely see it unless you are looking head on. Oh well...

Preach! Lightflow works. God I miss stock android right about now.
Hi there!
I am getting crazy because of that. Since I upgraded to Android 5 I get those stupid floating notifications every time I receive a message on WhatsApp or Threema. I have disabled the pop up notifications in the respective App but it doesn't help. I hate it, that half of my screen is blocked while someone writes me messages. The only way to disable that is to disable all kind of notifications of the App.
Has anyone a solution?

I only ever get floating notifications with text messages, i have Whatsapp installed and do not get floating notifications for this at all, i haven't changed any settings in it either so not sure why you are getting it, im on latest 20p firmware.
I don't understand that. The attached Screenshot shows how it looks like when I receive a message on WhatsApp.
I am on v20h firmware.

Ohhh that floating notification, hmm yes i do actually get that, i think its part of UI really and i haven't seen any global settings where you can turn it off
Exactly, don't know if that type of notification have another name. I wrote to LG and asked how to disable it. I am afraid there is no possibility, yet, so I also told them to change this annoying thing asap..
