{Q} Very Confused. Hboot 2.10 S-on but I'm rooted? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Okay long story short...Replaced my EVO 3 months ago. Used unrevoked to root and have been on Miui for quite some time...
I want to flash the newest radio/wiimax/PRI ect but when I went into Bootloader to flash the PC36img.zip nothing happened. The bootloader finds the img file but nothing else happens. I then noticed that it says S-ON.
I'm confused. I thought in order to be rooted you have to be S-off? If that is the case how can I flash any rom I want? I also have AMON 2.3 recovery flashed as well...
Also, I would like to get to S-off so if I follow this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=829045 Will it work? Can I follow this guide with how my phone is now or do I have to unroot first? Thanks in advance.

The original Unrevoked 3.1 came out and could root the EVO before they released Unrevoked Forever. I think all you need to do is go check out the Unrevoked Forever site (http://www.unrevoked.com/forever) and you should be able to S-OFF your rooted EVO so that the bootloader will be able to apply the PC36IMG.zip files.

Correct. Possibly you got unrooted by trying to flash the new ota.

Thank you so much! I am now S-off by running the Unrevoked Forever.Zip file. Flashing radios now. Thanks again! I assume that I'll have to flash a Sense ROM to update profile after I flash the radios?

yup.

I have the same issue. I am fully rooted but s-on. Im guessing it happened when i flashed the latest radio update.

Wrong. S off is just the security setting. It has no correlation with being rooted. You can be rooted and still be s on like the op.
S off only enables the hboot to flash unsigned/unofficial images to the partitions. S off also allows the system to be written to while android is booted.
The unrevoked forever instructions even state you need to be rooted and have a custom recovery in order to set s off.

Question regarding rumored OTA today

With todays rumored start of the OTA for the Dinc I have a question as to how to go about things. When the leaked 2.2 came out I flashed my radio and updated to the leaked 2.2, had the typical problems everyone else did but instead of going through all of the fixes went back to stock 2.1. So I'm back to firmware 2.1-update1 baseband 1.000.03.04.06. My question is this. Unrevoked posted a tweet last night/early this morning saying to be sure to use Unrevoked Forever before any OTAs. So, at risk of goofing something up what steps do I need to take to be ready for the OTA?
Root using Unrevoked 3.1
Use Unrevoked Forever
Wait for OTA
Sound about right? But if I do those things will I be able to apply the OTA without issue? Or is the general idea to not apply 2.2 until Unrevoked has come out with a modified 2.2 OTA. I'm honestly not too worried about root as I know that Unrevoked will eventually, if not soon after the update, come out with something for rooting 2.2.
Also, if I do these things and return to Stock, S-ON will be there still, can I then take the update normally without issue, then simply wait on Unrevoked to root 2.2? So many things going on, not sure which way to go.
I looked over the forums and didn't see any similar questions being asked, so if I missed something please disregard.
You need to have s-off before you apply the 2.2 OTA update or you will loose Root perm until they figure out a way to reroot. If you have S-off even if you take a OTA that has not been rooted, you can simply flash a new recovery that allows you to install su, and use that to restore yourself to a fully rooted system.
I got this information from http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/forever I take no credit for it.
The steps you described will enable you to root after the OTA update. Just make sure that you have the latest radio before you update.
Keep in mind that there is currently no way to revert from s-off at the moment so if your goal is to have a 2.2 factory image, just sit tight and wait for the update.

OK, forgive the stupid question. It's early, I didn't sleep, so I NEED to run Unrevoked Forever, period, before the OTA, otherwise I'm at the mercy of someone discovering a root method for 2.2, which may or may not take forever, yea?
Yes that is what I have read that the 2.2 OTA will plug up the current root process just like it did for the EVO.
If you want root, you install unrevoked forever.
If you are worried about being able to revert to stock image for warranty reasons or otherwise, check Berzerker7's post in the development thread to downgrade. According to him you will have stock and VZW techs dont have a way for checking for s-off

OK so here's what I've got so far, and thanks for the help =)
•Run Unrevoked 3.1
•Run Unrevoked Forever
•Reflash back to Stock 2.1
•Apply official OTA
•Apply custom recovery
•Install su
Sound right?
I just found this about the OTA http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=7728407&postcount=3386

Now all we need is the OTA.
I am a bit confused. I am urnning radio 2.15 (latest) with SkyRaider 2.5.2 and Clockwork recovery and S-OFF.
How do i go about getting stock radio and stock ROM? Also, can the stock rom be rooted or no when flashing OTA?
Thanks!

Read http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=757927 to revert back to the stock radio and stock ROM. As you have S-OFF once you have intalled the OTA then just flash the custom recovery that Unrevoked has supplied http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/forever and apply SU and then you are rooted again.

[Q] Does PC36IMG Also Contain A "Stock" Recovery?

This is a simple question that I have:
If I were to want to return to bone stock -- I mean like, fresh out of the cardboard box -- on my EVO, would using Bootloader to flash PC36IMG.zip replace EVERYTHING, including Amon-Ra's recovery image?
Just curious, and unfortunately there seems to be some FUD in some of the threads I've seen about unrooting and such.
Any knowledgeable folk have an answer?
T.I.A.
A "stock" recovery is no recovery. So if you unrooted, ran the ruu, ect, and tried to boot into recovery, you'd be met with the triangle and a ! indicating no recovery.

PC36IMG is sufficient. Same results as RUU. Just be sure to turn your S-on before running the PC36IMG, using the Unrevoked S on tool (that is if you ever used Unrevoked forever at any point in time)

I don't know if when you download it, it would change to the correct extension; you could always try changing it. Either way, you're in luck.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/19699565/3.70 RUU Zip.zip
A link to my dropbox of a 3.70 RUU in PC36IMG form, just put on your sdcard and flash in the bootloader.
PC3GIMG.zip is just the name of the file that hboot looks for to flash, they are all different! Some PC36IMGs have recoveries, some have radios, some have ROMs, etc... You need to be careful which one you flash, and KNOW for sure whats in it before you do because you run the risk of messing up your phone if you flash the wrong one!

So what is the difference between an RUU and a PC36IMG.zip? My hardware 0003 evo has an 2.10 hboot and the baseband of 2.15. 00.11.19

The RUU (ROM Update Utility) is IN a PC36IMG.zip.
Turn S-ON back on.
Go into Bootloader.
Allow it to detect.
Update (make sure you have the correct PC36IMG.zip).
not to hi-jack the thread but say HTC/Sprint did upgrade to the EVO 4G to GB could i flash the "stock" recovery without running the ruu and wiping everything? i use stock rom but like the features Root and Amon Ra brings havent found a custom rom that like everything seems to be themed and not my style.

Again, "stock" recovery is no recovery. And if you were to upgrade, you'd have to root, and you can keep the rooted stock rom. You can flash CM7 which is basically stock android AOSP, not themed. Can always flash back if you don't like it, and everything is working.
Yeah I know about cm used it on pretty much everything g1 nexus mt4g etc I like some stuff sense have to offer over asop I always end up flashing to see the new stuff I prefer stock android but the usb transfer speed is killing me atm waiting for that to get fixed and I understand stock is recovery guess ima have to titanium backup which works but some issues thanks tho I try stuff nandroid is my bestfriend in android

Unrooting Revolutionary

Did you use unrEVOked to turn S-ON? If so, and please correct me if I'm wrong, to my understanding you can only use that method if you used unrEVOked to root originally. In which case, you may need to use a different method. Perhaps the reason for S-OFF coming back.

Need to unroot and return to stock

I need an unmodified stock version (unrooted) version of 3.70.651.1

Here is a list of all RUU's and PC36IMG's in all software version's for the Evo. All of these are unrooted and completely stock.
Don't forget to use the Unrevoked S on tool, before running the RUU (if you used unrevoked to root, you'll need to flash that, in order to turn S back to ON)
I thought simply flashing the ROM would unroot me since it is stock? I Used Unrevoked 3 not unrevoked forever.

That doesn't matter. Unrevoked 3 flashes the unrevoked forever zip in the process. Believe me, if you don't flash the Unrevoked S On tool, you will still be S off after running the RUU.
And no, you can't just flash a 'stock' rom using recovery to unroot. You could flash a stock rom, and it will appear to be stock and unrooted, but you will still have super user, busy box, and S off, which would mean you're still rooted. If you need to really unroot, you need to flash the unrevoked forever S on zip first. Then after that, you either run the RUU from your computer, or instead, you download the PC36IMG of an RUU, then place it on the root of your SD card. Then boot to the bootloader, accept the update, and let it finish. You'll then be unrooted, S on, and back to stock.
Ok thanks for the help

Yes, that is basically it. If you wanted to do it directly from your phone, download the PC36IMG.zip, place it on your sd card, and then flash it using the bootloader. If you want to run it from the computer, download the RUU (which is a .exe file) and run it from your computer, with your Evo connected via USB. I think the PC36IMG is easier, and has less chance of anything going wrong. In my opinion.

To get the stock stuff just run the latest RUU. Please note that the latest OTA update is currently NOT rootable. I'm not sure if flashing an RUU put your phone back to "s-on". You may want to try running the latest 2.2 based RUU first since that can be rooted. Or maybe someone else can chime in and let you know if it is OK to run the RUU with "s-off" and not break the NAND unlock.
All RUU's can be found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=HTC_Supersonic/ROMs#Stock_ROMs
Good luck.
If you've updated OTA, you cannot run an older RUU. If you haven't, running the RUU will not change your s-off if you used unrevoked 3+ to root or if you flashed unrevoked forever (some other root methods use this for nand unlock). The RUUs are not rooted, but leaving s-off will allow you to reflash recovery and then flash a rooted rom.
If you're trying to fully unroot and go back to stock, you'll need to first flash the unrevoked s-on zip (assuming you used unrevoked) through recovery. You can then run an RUU from your computer or flash a PC36IMG.zip of the RUU through the bootloader. If you're attempting to unroot, look into one of the unrooting guides if you need more clarification. If you just want a stock setup but want to remain rooted, you can flash one of the stock rooted roms. If you're already on a stock rom you can just do a factory reset.

You should be able to use Unrevoked:

make sure you have the droid incredible driver installed on your PC as well.

This process should root your phone, you'll then be able to flash other ROM's that may prove to be quicker, drain less battery, more stylish.

Not sure if unrevoked would work or not. But if your s-off you can just flash cwm or amon ra recovery thru hboot, and then flash the super user binary thru recovery. Bam your rooted.
Clockwork Recovery 5.0.2.0 --> http://dinc.does-it.net/PB31IMG.zip Place on root of sd in no folders.

See my post a couple up.
And for your info unrevoked gave the to new firmware error because you must be on the stock froyo radio for it to work, you are on the latest gingerbread radio. And there is also a newer version of gingerbread out, the official one 4.06.605.3 ruu you can get it in the dev section but if you do go from .2 to .3, do it before rooting as it will also un-root you.

Is there any other way to flash the custom recovery, perhabs with fastboot, adb, etc and how? Can I flash back to RUU Froyo OTA then use unrevoked to get root since I already S-OFF?
Edit: Done! I get root again, thanks cmlusco. The problem is my SDCard which I used in Desire before. After reformatting the SDCard, everythings went well.

Glad to hear you got it working.
My gf finally wants me to root her Dinc and I noticed it's running 2.3.4 and dead stock. From reading here I guess it CANT be rooted now?
Has anything changed since the last post in this thread or is there a topic I should be following to find out when/if/how I can root the phone?

Not sure if unrevoked would work or not. But if your s-off you can just flash cwm or amon ra recovery thru hboot, and then flash the super user binary thru recovery. Bam your rooted.
Clockwork Recovery 5.0.2.0 --> Place on root of sd in no folders.
Super user binary -->
Place anywhere you like on your sd.

I have the exact same scenario but in the past I have never rooted a phone other than to get rid of software (that sprint forced on EVO) so I have never used recovery. I have been searching but maybe didn't go back far enough to be clear. Do I just copy the files as you stated and then select "recovery" while in the hboot screen???

Any further explanation would be greatly appreciated.
TIA

You take the PB31IMG.zip and the su.zip and place them on your sd card in no folders. Boot into hboot and wait a couple secs. It will find the PB31IMG.zip and prompt you to hit volume up to flash it. Once thats done then select recovery from hboot and select install zip from sd and select the su.zip. Answer yes when prompted to install. After it has finished reboot your phone and install thr superuser app from the market. Thats it then your fully rooted.
Thanks for your help again.
I hit volume up to flash and within about a second it shows update complete and asks to reboot device. I've tried both ways Yes and No, with No continuing on and doing the su.zip as instructed. It doesn't seem to do anything either way. How long should the PB31IMG take to flash?
