I bought an Evo from Cragslist and Installed on it was the android-wifi-tether. I neaver asked the seller what root he had put on the Evo is there any way to check? I wanted to but the new update on Evo not really sure what to do I don't really use/abuse the teathering thing it is nice to know you can do it though.
Settings-About Phone-Software. It should be listed in the version number. If the bootup is the typical Spring 4G splash, then it's probably just stock with wifi tether.
If you ever want to keep root or unroot in the future, do not install the OTA update. You'll lose the ability to root.
You can install just about any ROM you want, read around the forums for information on each one and how to install them. You may also want to read the "how to root" threads to see how it was done, as it's very instructional.

Thanks for your help its sounds like I may want anthor rom idk the battery life and SD cards are major issues for me and i'm hoping that with a diffrent rom they would be able to fix them. I read that formating the SD card might fix the sd card bug but i'm afraid i'lll lose my root do you know if thats the case? Thanks
Formatting the SD card will not make you lose root. Although, it sounds like you may want to try flashing another Rom or even trying to redo toasts rooting guide

If all else fails just re-root. That way to can make sure of the root type
Simple Root
Thanks for your reply I'll try re-formatting the SD card tonight i'm kind of scared to put anther rom on the phone it seems so complicated....
But since I bought the phone used I really have no idea whats on this thing since I didn't ask the seller the right questions when i bought it
I have never used Craigslist before, but you can't email him just to ask? Worst case is he doesn't reply to your email.
good call I wrote the person I bought it from I didn't even think to search email and send him a message thanks for the advise!!
when i follow these steps i get the option to see versions of many diff things. android version, baseband version, kernel version, pri version, prl version... which one tells me the root? i also bought a rooted evo off someone and need to update gingerbread and beed this info i am told

If you're rooted and s-off, all you need to do is download the stock rooted rom (or if you'd like, a custom rom with updated software) and flash it through recovery. If you don't know how to flash roms, there are guides available here and on other sites.
You don't really need to know how it was rooted unless you are wanting to unroot. If you boot into hboot, then your hboot version will most likely tell how it was rooted. If it's 6.16, then it was rooted with revolutionary. If it's 2.10 or below, it was most likely rooted with unrevoked... but it could've been rooted with Toast's method or something else. If it's still on 2.2, then most likely unrevoked was used unless someone rooted with revolutionary and then flashed a 2.2 rom, but that's unlikely.
If you don't want it to be rooted, find out which root method was used and unroot with the proper method. You can RUU to the latest firmware during the unroot process.

All you need to do is research flashing roms. Once you understand that, go to the Evo 4G Development forum and find the stock rooted rom (grab the odexed version unless you plan to theme or modify it). Backup your apps and data with Titanium Backup and texts with SMS Backup & Restore if you'd like. Boot into recovery, nandroid backup, then wipe and flash as directed in one of the many guides.
If you have ClockworkMod recovery, I suggest switching to Amon Ra. Download the PC36IMG for AR and put it on the root of your SD card (not in any folders), then boot into hboot. The phone will scan for the file and ask you to update, hit volume up for yes.
You can get a properly named version of Amon Ra from here: http://db.tt/WP0beNa
But before doing anything, read as much as you can. Good luck!

First you need to read.
Read these threads first:

With todays rumored start of the OTA for the Dinc I have a question as to how to go about things. When the leaked 2.2 came out I flashed my radio and updated to the leaked 2.2, had the typical problems everyone else did but instead of going through all of the fixes went back to stock 2.1. So I'm back to firmware 2.1-update1 baseband 1.000.03.04.06. My question is this. Unrevoked posted a tweet last night/early this morning saying to be sure to use Unrevoked Forever before any OTAs. So, at risk of goofing something up what steps do I need to take to be ready for the OTA?
Root using Unrevoked 3.1
Use Unrevoked Forever
Wait for OTA
Sound about right? But if I do those things will I be able to apply the OTA without issue? Or is the general idea to not apply 2.2 until Unrevoked has come out with a modified 2.2 OTA. I'm honestly not too worried about root as I know that Unrevoked will eventually, if not soon after the update, come out with something for rooting 2.2.
Also, if I do these things and return to Stock, S-ON will be there still, can I then take the update normally without issue, then simply wait on Unrevoked to root 2.2? So many things going on, not sure which way to go.
I looked over the forums and didn't see any similar questions being asked, so if I missed something please disregard.
You need to have s-off before you apply the 2.2 OTA update or you will loose Root perm until they figure out a way to reroot. If you have S-off even if you take a OTA that has not been rooted, you can simply flash a new recovery that allows you to install su, and use that to restore yourself to a fully rooted system.
I got this information from http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/forever I take no credit for it.
The steps you described will enable you to root after the OTA update. Just make sure that you have the latest radio before you update.
Keep in mind that there is currently no way to revert from s-off at the moment so if your goal is to have a 2.2 factory image, just sit tight and wait for the update.

OK, forgive the stupid question. It's early, I didn't sleep, so I NEED to run Unrevoked Forever, period, before the OTA, otherwise I'm at the mercy of someone discovering a root method for 2.2, which may or may not take forever, yea?
Yes that is what I have read that the 2.2 OTA will plug up the current root process just like it did for the EVO.
If you want root, you install unrevoked forever.
If you are worried about being able to revert to stock image for warranty reasons or otherwise, check Berzerker7's post in the development thread to downgrade. According to him you will have stock and VZW techs dont have a way for checking for s-off

OK so here's what I've got so far, and thanks for the help =)
•Run Unrevoked 3.1
•Run Unrevoked Forever
•Reflash back to Stock 2.1
•Apply official OTA
•Apply custom recovery
•Install su
Sound right?
I just found this about the OTA http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=7728407&postcount=3386
Assuming you are on 2.1 with clockwork and s-off: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=7660617&postcount=5

Now all we need is the OTA.
I am a bit confused. I am urnning radio 2.15 (latest) with SkyRaider 2.5.2 and Clockwork recovery and S-OFF.
How do i go about getting stock radio and stock ROM? Also, can the stock rom be rooted or no when flashing OTA?
Thanks!

Read http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=757927 to revert back to the stock radio and stock ROM. As you have S-OFF once you have intalled the OTA then just flash the custom recovery that Unrevoked has supplied http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/forever and apply SU and then you are rooted again.

If you want a stock rooted PC36IMG, your best bet would be the Sprint Lovers ROM. It's about 99.9% stock and comes as a PC36IMG.

I am totally new to xda, though fairly technically adept with years of Linux experience, which is to say, I am not clueless, but I'm totally lost with this.
I rooted my evo with unrevoked3. I installed unrevoked-forever. I did not install a custom ROM (unless one of the above processes installed one for me). I tried to install the 4.22.651.2 update OTA, but after the progress bar got a third of the way, the package on the screen turned into a warning symbol + android, and just stayed there until I did a battery pull.
I am clueless as to what to do next to allow the OTA update to install. Do I need to install one of the above? Do I need to S-on?

...but if you want to be rooted, just flash the rooted version of the stock rom. You can keep s-off, that way if you change your mind and want to go back to root, you can just flash recovery and then flash a rom. If you don't want to be rooted anymore, or don't mind waiting for a root exploit, go ahead and flash the s-on zip. At the moment Unrevoked, or anything else for that matter, can not root the OTA if you're s-on.

Ahhh... So I won't be able to be rooted and use the OTA update for now? I thought I could unroot, install the update, and root again.
I don't use any custom ROMs. Heck, I haven't even changed the original wallpaper. I rooted just for Wireless Tether, Titanium Backup and to use the Root Uninstaller to get rid of the pre-installed apps I didn't want.
I really appreciate the help. I am less confused about the process now, but more confused about aligning my technical goals with what I want to do with my phone.
No. If you unroot and install the OTA, you cannot root again. There is no method yet.
You're best bet is to stay rooted and flash the Stock/Rooted ROM
Okay long story short...Replaced my EVO 3 months ago. Used unrevoked to root and have been on Miui for quite some time...
I want to flash the newest radio/wiimax/PRI ect but when I went into Bootloader to flash the PC36img.zip nothing happened. The bootloader finds the img file but nothing else happens. I then noticed that it says S-ON.
I'm confused. I thought in order to be rooted you have to be S-off? If that is the case how can I flash any rom I want? I also have AMON 2.3 recovery flashed as well...
Also, I would like to get to S-off so if I follow this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=829045 Will it work? Can I follow this guide with how my phone is now or do I have to unroot first? Thanks in advance.

The original Unrevoked 3.1 came out and could root the EVO before they released Unrevoked Forever. I think all you need to do is go check out the Unrevoked Forever site (http://www.unrevoked.com/forever) and you should be able to S-OFF your rooted EVO so that the bootloader will be able to apply the PC36IMG.zip files.

Wrong. S off is just the security setting. It has no correlation with being rooted. You can be rooted and still be s on like the op.
S off only enables the hboot to flash unsigned/unofficial images to the partitions. S off also allows the system to be written to while android is booted.
The unrevoked forever instructions even state you need to be rooted and have a custom recovery in order to set s off.

I rooted with revolutionary and wanted to know the quickest way to get s-on going to flash my stock back up because I'm upgrading my phone. Any help is really appreciated
y do you need to unroot to upgrade? are you trading your phone in?
Yea upgrading to evo 3d compliments of sprint
id say check out this thread. the key is to check that you have s-on, correct hboot version and KEEP you sd card as it will have different partitions, folders and files on it that if gone through can give it away.
