I believe you are correct. But as long as you know how to go back, or make a restorable backup it is worth a try.

[Q] going to a custom rom, why flash to stock?

Why do you have to flash to a stock rom before moving to a custom rom? If I want to install Viper 5.0 on EB13, why do I have to go to stock EB13 first? Just curious. If I flash to the stock EB13, does that change the modem to EB13? I'm on DK28 now with Viper Trinity 2.0 and want to try 5.0...Why can't I just do the wipe 3 times and then flash the custom rom? I just want to understand this is all.
Thanks,
Kevin
Its worth a try.... if it doesn't boot you'll have to odin anyway. Wipe everything 3x each and flash your rom and see if it fixes it. Also, you can always flash different modems with odin.

Sure, but that doesn't really get to the root of my question. When I went from EC05 stock to DK28 ViperRom, why did I have to flash to the stock DK28? what significance does this have?

It is probably due to the modem compatibility and support files. Most ROMs include all support and stock files needed but may remove bloatware. Some check for modem and will install the needed modem, others not. For EB13 and EC05 ROMs the support files and data are compatible but not necessarily with DK28 since that was an early leak.
As mentioned, back up your stuff and you can always try without Odin'ing first and if you get no errors you are good to go.
you dont have too., you could just odin the modem, and flash the rom... unless you have to change from rfs to ext4 or vice versa

1 try flash your origin phone modem . Still not work
2 flash origin stock rom. Stock rom from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1957218
This is different version phone forum of yor phone that why you flash wrong rom in wrong phone and mess up your baseband & Imei.
So you need to flash your original stock rom & modem to get its back.
Flashing stock rom will do it? Do i also need to flash modem too or the rom will fix it? and do I flash from odin or recovery?
Which is the correct modem file, ive been searching. Dr Ketan's modem file, is that the one? Flash thru odin?

[Q] Help rerooting of LiquidSmooth

So I made the mistake of removing root access via the app Super SU, and am stuck on Liquid Smooth rom. I've tried to get rooted again to no avail. I used Team Wins rooting method with Odin and cwm recovery.
Also, until I return to the stock sprint GS3 rom, I cannot use my phone as a cell phone with cricket and thus have a very tiny tablet.
Does anybody know how I could regain root access or just return to the stock rom (which I presume requires root)? Please and thank you.
Just reflash your ROM in recovery.

I think you mean it's Stock Recovery. If it were CWM, you would be able to reflash your Rom (follow my linked instructions).
If it's the stock recovery, you should follow the Rooting Guide to get a custom Recovery back (CWM or TWRP, your choice).

Alright that worked, and now I'm on CM 10.1. Once I have PC access, what's the best route to putting myself on the OEM stock rom? I need to be stock so I can flash my phone to cricket. Also, once activated on cricket, could I flash over to another ROM without messing up my service?

Freeza has the stock rooted Rom over in his Thread. I don't know if Deodex vs. Odex matters when flashing to Cricket, so try each.
I'm personally really unfamiliar with the intricacies of flashing across carriers, so I'll have to let someone else answer your question about flashing other Roms once you get it working on Cricket. The only advice I'd be able to give is the following:
Once you get it up and running on Cricket, make a Nandroid Backup in your Custom Recovery.
Try out different Roms!
If one messes up the connection to the Cricket network, restore your backup.
Rinse and Repeat.
Most importantly: enjoy yourself!
Flashing to cricket wont prevent you from flashing custom roms
Think about it like this, you dont lose your phone number between flashes, do you?
But of course, ALWAYS have a backup handy in case anything goes wrong
Wow, tbanks everybdy. I'm on stock fw (rooted) and will post when flashed to cricket. I appreciate ghe help, without it I'd he stuck on a dumbphone.

I've only been on Verizon and Sprint, so I haven't had any experience with other carriers. Is there any resource out there which states which carriers are CDMA and which are GSM and which are (relatively) interchangeable in terms of phones?

I know Verizon, Sprint, Cricket, Metro PCS and Boost all use CDMA. Though there are limitations. Verizon wi ll only let you use Verizon branded devices on their network, as does Boost. I don't know about Sprint, but Cricket and Metro should allow any compatible devices.
AT&T and Tmobile use GSM and only about their own as far as I know. Though you can use international on AT&T and Tmobile's prepaid service.
Data goes the same as far as I know, though all 4g is LTE now.

Flash stock rom - Keep Root & CWM

Hello, I am currently rooted and have CWM 6.0.4.3. installed. I'm on CM11 but want to go back to stock.. Is there an easy way to keep root and go back to stock. Want stock for a few functions that ROMS dont seem to be offering but can keep root and CWM ??
Thanks.
Which phone do you have? You could try flashing a pre-rooted stock ROM via Odin. Then use Odin to flash CWM.
Bt its better to firstly install ur stock rom and then again root it as it takes no longer than 5 mins

Ok perfect, thats what I was looking for. Phone btw is S3 - d2att - SGH i747) Sounds good to install the stock rom and re-root.. I'm sure its here but I have searched everywhere to find a tutorial on this and I cannot find a straight answer.
Would you mind giving me the steps or pointing me to a thread that explains how to and has the files in need to download ?

Do you know if there is a step by step on this somewhere ? I dont mind going back to complete stock.. I can just re-root and flash CWM after.
OR
Maybe you could just answer the bigger question : the reason I want to go back to stock is I need to use MHL/HDMI which CM11 doesnt support. I dont want to go back to stock, I would rather even go to another ROM that supports mhl/hdmi.. but if I have to go to stock, than so be it.?
Were you running the stock AT&T 4.3 ROM before you switched to CM11?

Since you installed a custom recovery, that would have tripped the Knox counter which voids the warranty. It's not a problem if the phone is working properly.
Did you update to 4.3 or did it come with 4.3?
You may be better off installing a pre-rooted ROM.

It was quite some time ago but I believe I was on ICS 4.0.. and switch to CM from there. Im not worried about the counter for warranty, that's expired on my unit anyways. I just want to be able to use MHL/HDMI function.. so if fine with flashing pre-rooted.. or stock.. or a different ROM that support MHL/HDMI. Can you recommend the easiest route ?

I asked about 4.3 because the 4.3 bootloader cannot be downloaded. Flashing via mobile Odin will not touch the bootloader or modem.
You could try a pre-rooted rom and then flash a custom recovery via Odin.
I use Philz Touch from here: http://goo.im/devs/philz_touch/CWM_Advanced_Edition/d2att

Ok thanks, I will do that. 1 thing I'm not quite sure of is the bootloader situation ? In the first tutorial there is a note : Flashing a prior bootloader can hard/soft brick your device. How do I know ?
I see the steps as:
Extract tar file you downloaded.
Use Odin, put phone into download mode [with phone off, hold vol. down + home + power ], connect to computer and open Odin.
once in odin click the PDA field and select the tar file
Leave Auto Reboot and F. Reset Time checked.
click start and when done let phone reboot.
If you just want a stock, rooted phone with no custom recovery, no plans to flash custom roms, etc. then you can stop HERE.
For my situation, is it just that easy ?
Before flashing, verify the version of your bootloader.

You mentioned your have the i747 and Rogers. Do you have the AT&T s3 (i747) or Rogers/Bell/Telus s3 (i747m)?
What is the most recent stock ROM you had on your phone?
Hey. I got the i747m. As for what was the last stock ROM I had, can't say. I know when I bought the phone it was ICS and I had received and update to jellybean.. But them went to cm10. The tutorial I followed told me had me back everything up, which I did. Have it in a file somewhere on my comp, would that tell me ?

If you are flasjing back to stock you should flash back to the same baseband/bootloader that came stock on your phone.

I have not seen a stock mf1 ROM that can be flashed in CWM. You could use mobile Odin to flash back to stock and then flash Philz Touch via desktop Odin later.

If you are sure you have the Rogers i747m and you have never loaded a stock Rogers 4.3 ROM onto your phone, you could use desktop Odin to flash a pre-rooted 4.1.2 ROM from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1739426.
Flashing the pre-rooted 4.1.2 ROM will return the phone to completely stock, wipe out all installed apps and data, and you will have root. I do not recommend flashing the Rogers 4.3 pre-rooted ROM from the link.
Once you are able to boot into the phone and set things up, you can flash Philz Touch from Odin which will give you a custom recovery on a rooted stock 4.1.2 ROM.

How to return to stock after custom rom Virgin Mobile

I'm currently running a custom rom and I would like to use Odin to get back to stock. Every rom I've installed I have to flash an apn fix because I'm on Virgin Mobile. So my question is if I return to stock am I going to have to apply an apn fix? I don't see any stock that has vm in it. All spr. And also I'm using ndc modem. How do I know which stock to chose? And after I find the right stock is there any directions on how to use in Odin?
do you have the D2SPR (aka L710)? if so, itll be a sprint tar.md5 that youll be flashing in odin. Have you flashed in odin before? If not i can tell you the step by step stuff that youll need to know
