[Q] MIUI Slow data speeds - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just flashed to MIUI and i finally fixed force close problems, most of them. But now i have terrible data speeds, it takes 10 minutes for 10 MB. I usually have great service and i use wifi, but its terrible. I saw a thread that said the install vvm, but i have no idea what that is. Thanks

Data problems - Please help

I have been having some major problems with my EVO regarding the data. If I use anything that is on the heavy side of bandwidth, like downloading a file from android marketplace, surfing the web, watching sprint tv, using the GPS, etc...the data will just time out for about 3 min at a time. For instance if I am downloading a 5mb app from android marketplace, it will maybe download a megabyte, then it will just stop downloading. If you look at the 3G symbol at the top, it will be white, but only the upstream indicator will be on. I can then open any other internet application on the phone, and nothing will work. It usually lasts for about 3 minutes at a time and happens fairly regularly. It will end up taking me 15-20 min to download a 5mb file from the marketplace. Same thing if I browse a bandwidth heavy site like digg.com. It will just time out after a while and it will just show the upstream indicator as solid and not do anything in any program.
This problem is not location dependent. I have this issue at my apartment, at work, at my friend's house, at the Sprint store...anywhere.
In chronological order, this is what I have done to troubleshoot/fix the problem:
First noticed problem
Turned off phone/Turned back on
Rooted and installed custom version of 2.1 w/ Sense
Removed battery (power cycle)
Talk to Sprint cust care. They sent signal over that reactivated the phone (2x)
Did factory reset on phone and formatted SD card
Swapped phone at Sprint store with new one
So even after swapping my EVO with a new EVO from the Sprint store and not fooling with the phone at all, I am still having the same exact issue.
I am absolutely at wit's end with this and I have no idea what to do at this point.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Does this happen over wifi too, or only 3g?
------------------------------------------
This post brought to you by my EVO 4G, by XDA-Tapatalk, and by Swype.
Thats a good question. I dont have a wifi connection to try it on at home because I keep my wifi on 5ghz N. I will take it to a friend's house and try.
yeah good luck testing it with WIFI. I'd say my WIFI is about 10 times less reliable than 3G.
I have not been able to test with Wifi yet, but I just had one of my coworkers that has the same phone to replicate the issue on his phone. He is having the same exact problem.
We set our phones next to each other and downloaded Space Buster 3D Lite off the Android Marketplace. Mine crapped out about 2mb in and so did his. He wasnt able to surf or do anything else on his phone for a few minutes just like mine.
I'm wondering if this a network problem in our area or if there is a problem with the phone.
Also, I downloaded a continuous ping program and did 3,000 pings with no packet loss, so it seems to only happen with heavy data usage ie. saturating your bandwidth.
Either way, it makes me feel a lot better to see this problem happening with other people lol
dude... i was just about to post a thread on this. im tearing my hair out with this horrible horrible problem. tmobile was better and more consistent its ridiculous...
i'm having the exact same problems, and not only just this, but i'm sending and receiving texts hours and hours off... its just not instant. wheerever i am. and sometimes i'm sending a text and this data "blackout" happens. also when i'm receiving texts i can't send texts out at the same time.. the phone gives me sms errors and then the data timeouts for minutes.. i have to wait minutes to resend the texts or use data..
Well it turns out that my friend that got this phone too is having the same exact problem......
WTF is going on here? Can people test this on their phones? Just try downloading a large file (5mb+) off android marketplace 2-3 times and watch the download. See if it stops or says download paused. Then try surfing the web when this happens.
Including myself, thats 3/3 people that are having this problem that I know personally.

I have no issues downloading large files, maybe it is location based?
It appears the OTA update that was released today fixed the problem. I've been running Sprint TV for about 4 hours with no issues. Thank god...I was about to cancel my service over this.

[Q] Insanely Bad 3G Speeds after Official Froyo OTA

Ok, so I've been a lurker on the forums for quite some time, but I finally have a problem that I felt warranted a new thread, as the only threads I've found upon doing a search are pretty old and not specifically relevant to the issue I'm having.
I recently updated to 2.2 with the official OTA (the .6 firmware, not the early .3 leak) and basically ever since I've had no problems short of a universally ABYSMAL 3G connection. The phone stays connected, and I can browse the web, etc. but I'm getting speeds of about 7k down. Yes, 7. Not 70, not 700, 7.
I've tried testing both in the admittedly buggy speedtest.net app, which actually reported a much higher upload speed than download, and then again with mobilespeedtest.com just to be sure it wasn't an error within the speedtest app. My 3G speeds are so incredibly bad that my NPR app won't function at all. Youtube videos buffer for minutes on end even at low quality, even Google takes about 30 seconds to load. I've tried restarting the phone, I've updated the PRL, I've used the network app to make sure my PRL was set to CDMA Auto (it was)... I'm at my wits end and considering a hard reset. Before I do that though I was just wondering if anyone out there has been experiencing the same problems.
Any magic tricks out there? Am I all alone in this one? >.>;
Sounds like a rare case of your radio being internally damaged from flashing corruption. I'd take it to a Sprint store and they should replace it for you for free.
Good luck
Can you download the OTA manually and attempt to reflash it?
I was having the same problem. It started with the RC1 ROM, then I flashed to the new Fresh 3.1 Rom. Nothing I did helped then I found a page that had all the old radios. So I flashed a few radios back from when I had better service. Maybe you can try to flash a different radio. So far it had been pretty good for me. I didn't flash the Wimax, just try the radio.
Heres the page: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=715485&highlight=downgrade+radio

Web pages fail to completely load on 4G

Here in Seattle I get good 4G reception (maximum bars) with download speeds typically >6000 kbps (ping 381 ms), yet when I browse the web, the speed at which web pages open begins to dramatically slow about half-way through and then eventually stops before download is complete. I do not have this problem with 3G or with other apps. I am using Fresh 3.2.

i was getting that too. i have no idea why. it was so annoying. pages would load to 85% - 90% then stop, but web apps like youtube and pandora did fine. i hope someone could shed some light on it in case it happens again. i was using baked snack with kernel #4 before, but have not had the issue occur with baked snack 1.7 kernel #6.
My biggest problem is streaming on sites like Justin.tv, with 3G I can stream just fine without too much of an issue. However 4G it constantly skips and buffers every 5-10 seconds.

Wimax, AOSP, and Tethering Problems?

This may or may not belong in the Questions thread, but I just wanted to share my personal observations and wanted to see if anyone else have the same issues recently.
Let me preface by saying I'm currently on MIUI 2.5.25, and previously have been on AOKP or CM9. Starting late last week, I noticed my Wimax speeds plummeted greatly (from about 6-9mb/s avg down to less than 1mb/s). I flashed back to the other aosp roms I've been running and the slow speeds still persisted.
Out of curiosity (and thanks to the CM9 team's magical temporary stock GB rom), I did the temporary boot to stock EL29. Magically, my Wimax now wasn't just back to normal, but speeds seemed a little better than before, now avg about 8-11mb/s! So I tried flashing to a full rom (I chose Caulk's EL29 rom), and yup, speeds were still super fast. HOWEVER, when I tried to tether with Sprint's hacked hotspot app, it seemed like my speeds were capped at about 1.4 mb/s or slower...no matter how fast I was pulling on the phone itself (usb tethering via pdanet yields full speeds).
Well I figured it must be a lack of source code thing and I miss AOSP roms so much that I figured I'd learned to deal with the slower 4G speeds...BUT ... starting just tonight, I noticed my 4G suddenly turned off by itself. I figured eh, problems with connections, so I turned it back on and let it connect to sprint, which it did. Issue was, I couldn't get online and none of my apps could connect to data. Internet worked fine all day but now it was just dead...Tried temporary EL29 rom again, and Wimax is still faster than ever...
With that said...anyone else seem to have these issue? Has Sprint figured out some type of way to throttle/block non-stock 4G data?

The reason you are not getting the same speeds is because on a sense rom with the hacked sprint hotspot, it only works with 3g. So when you turn on the hacked sprint hotspot, the phone turns off 4g and turns on 3g. On cm7, the hacked hotspot works with 4g and 3g. To get wimax tether on a sense rom, you could try http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/

3G/H issue with internet browser apps.

Hi guys, got an issue with my phone recently, 3G/H has been extremely slow using web browsing apps lately.
It's fine on other apps and if I run an app like speedtest or even facebook in the background the web app will run fine as long as speedtest is doing its thing.
I have no issue when on wifi.
Reseting the phone and clearing app data makes no difference.
My phone has the latest software.
Was fine till about 3 weeks ago.
Phone is 3 months old, this is the first issue.
Have tested with stock browser, dolphin and chrome.
I think this is a really strange issue.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Sam.
may be the problem of the telecom operators
I had the same probs up to a couple of days ago but since i updated to the latest radio (2.1204.127.19) my internet connection probs have gone...
not sure if that's your solution though as you say you have the latest software ... ?
Hello don't you have a data limitation ?
I have 1 Go data limitation. After that my browser seems to be slow but it's because i'm limited in data bandwith.
I don't have anymore my full speed until next month ...
Make sure you don't have this limitation too.
Other apps that don't need "speed" datas will not show any problem
because they only download a little amount of datas at once ( weather for example ).
Does speedtest shows a low speed ?
Prbably not my povider as it's only the web browser apps.
I'm on 1.29.862.11
It won't be data limit, i don't get near it and it doesn't slow down anyway, they just charge me more.
Speedtest shows same as always between 3 and 6 Mbps
