This may or may not belong in the Questions thread, but I just wanted to share my personal observations and wanted to see if anyone else have the same issues recently.
Let me preface by saying I'm currently on MIUI 2.5.25, and previously have been on AOKP or CM9. Starting late last week, I noticed my Wimax speeds plummeted greatly (from about 6-9mb/s avg down to less than 1mb/s). I flashed back to the other aosp roms I've been running and the slow speeds still persisted.
Out of curiosity (and thanks to the CM9 team's magical temporary stock GB rom), I did the temporary boot to stock EL29. Magically, my Wimax now wasn't just back to normal, but speeds seemed a little better than before, now avg about 8-11mb/s! So I tried flashing to a full rom (I chose Caulk's EL29 rom), and yup, speeds were still super fast. HOWEVER, when I tried to tether with Sprint's hacked hotspot app, it seemed like my speeds were capped at about 1.4 mb/s or slower...no matter how fast I was pulling on the phone itself (usb tethering via pdanet yields full speeds).
Well I figured it must be a lack of source code thing and I miss AOSP roms so much that I figured I'd learned to deal with the slower 4G speeds...BUT ... starting just tonight, I noticed my 4G suddenly turned off by itself. I figured eh, problems with connections, so I turned it back on and let it connect to sprint, which it did. Issue was, I couldn't get online and none of my apps could connect to data. Internet worked fine all day but now it was just dead...Tried temporary EL29 rom again, and Wimax is still faster than ever...
With that said...anyone else seem to have these issue? Has Sprint figured out some type of way to throttle/block non-stock 4G data?

The reason you are not getting the same speeds is because on a sense rom with the hacked sprint hotspot, it only works with 3g. So when you turn on the hacked sprint hotspot, the phone turns off 4g and turns on 3g. On cm7, the hacked hotspot works with 4g and 3g. To get wimax tether on a sense rom, you could try http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/

Not sure how this happened, but I've had two evo's since launch date, always averaged 2.5mb/s around my house before rooting, after rooting, and after running multiple roms. I rooted it with simpleroot and used the "starting over" method to get the latest radios.
I had been running baked snack for several weeks and a couple of days ago I decided to try Froyo, so I downloaded the Deoxedized version by SteelH (ver RevE.1). After flashing it (no new radio flashes, just the froyo rom) my 4g speeds leaped to over 6mb/s on every single test, two other evo's I had here were still down in the 2.5mb/s range. It was fantastic, but tethering didn't seem to work, so I flashed the 3.7.8b netarchy kernal and that didn't help, then I wiped completely and flashed the oxedized version of froyo by netarchy, my 4g speeds then dropped back down to 2.5mb/s. It was around then that I discovered I needed the pre7 version of wifi tether, so I wiped and flashed RevE.1 again hoping to see high 4g speeds again, but they were gone, I seem to be permanently stuck back at 2.5mb/s. I checked my PRL and was at 668, updated it to 669 and that didn't help, also tried the latest wimax radio just to be safe..
I can't for the life of me figure out how to get those speeds back, any suggestions?
Try changing servers. I know on the speedtest.net app, I will get 6-8mbps on some servers and only 2-3mbps on others. This is with stock unrooted Froyo.

different servers = different response times.. your original benchmark speeds were likely due to a different server being used during testing.
With all the excitement going on with the Wimax being alpha tested in the CM ROM it got me testing my data speeds the last few weeks.
From my understanding 3G speeds should be decent and range between 1 - 3 mbps down, and using Sprints 3G network I am not coming close to that.
I am using the SpeedTest.net app for my results, and I have read from some posts that the app might not be that accurate.
Here are the results that I have been seeing (displayed as Mbps) using the closest server to me (Random Lake, WI - even though other servers are giving me the same low scores):
1/6/11 - .18 down and .37 up
1/6/11 - .16 down and .30 up
1/2/11 - .30 down and .77 up
12/27/10 - .45 down and .27 up
12/27/10 - .34 down and .27 up
12/27/10 - .12 down and .20 up
12/24/10 - .45 down and .70 up
12/24/10 - .15 down and .62 up
As you can see, not close to the 1 - 3 range that I would expect. I am checking that the icon is showing 3G and 1X when doing the test as well. Here is some information to help deduct and (hopefully) solve my issue.
My EVO is from release day, not the 004 hardware
I'm running CM 6.1.1
CM stock kernal that comes with it - 2.6.35.9 [email protected] #1
Theme is Project_Bliss HD (modded by me to include some different emoticons and Batman themed notification shade)
I have flashed all of the latest
*Radio - 2.15.00.11.19
*Wimax - 27167_R01 (even though where I live has no 4G)
*PRI - 1.90_003
*NV - 1.90_003
I have flash a Sense ROM and update Profile and PRL
I live in Appleton, WI area if that matters at all.
So am I just looking at my results wrong? If I'm not, what are some solutions that I can look at to improve my 3G data speed? Any other test I should run or try?

Thanks for letting Cyanogen know that. So it sounds like I'm not alone in this?
Are you having any issues?

A lot of those results look like they could be from when you were connected at 1x speeds. Sometimes it seems like the status bar icon doesn't update quickly for the change in network type. Also, how strong of signal do you have. If you're at the edge of data coverage, the rate might be low because a lot of packets are getting lost in transmission. Have you seen what your speeds look like in other locations? In my home town I regularly get over 2mb, but when I was traveling a few weeks ago in some places I could barely pull 300k.
I have check all over town since my apartment is further away and gets lower strenght. Im getting the same results close or far away from a tower.

i started noticing this with my evo aswell, actually about yesterday, my stats are about the same in the OP, i live less then a mile from the 4g tower, i've even been about 200 yards away and gotten crappy 4g signal, anywhere from only 3-4 dl, and barely 1 ul.
Hopefully this helps. I was also experiencing 1x speeds although the phone indicated 3G. I upgraded to an EVO after modding my Hero for the past year. Thus I was pretty comfortable with rooting, installing roms, etc. within 24 hours of getting my EVO I decided to root it and try out some of the roms available.
Almost immediately after rooting using unrEVOked I noticed signiffigantly slower data speeds. (I'm not pointing any fingers, only documenting what led up to this) I first tried out the latest CM6 rom. Upon booting it indicated 1x speeds though posts that I read stated that you are actually recieving data at 3G speeds. I think that CM6 may actually be reporting the data connection accurately while the sense rom is not. Using speedtest.net's app (I know it dosen't report speeds accurately) I was consistently recieving between 80-160 kbs download and 60-100 kbs upload. I then downloaded the same app to my wifes unrooted EVO and ran a side by side comparison. Using the same server and within seconds of testing each her EVO was downloading at 800-1600 kbs download and 600-1000 kbs upload while mine was still recieving at the afore mentioned speeds. I tried updating PRL, profile, running the stock rom to no avail. I then tried RUU and unrooting without any change.
I was convinced that either Sprint was throttling my connection or the transmitter in the phone was defective or damaged. I was ready to return the phone to Radio Shack where I purchased it last week but I decided to call Sprint and inquire about the throttling issue first. Sprint assured me I was not being throttled and they also thought I may have a defective phone but they asked if I would perform a ##DATA# before returning it. Amazingly enough this worked and my data speeds have returned to 3G speeds of around 1000-1400 kbs download.
I'll detail the procedure but I make no guarantees this will work for anyone else. Also you'll need your MSL, there are guides that detail how to obtain this or you can all Sprint and ask nicely. Also I did this while stock and unrooted and I haven't tried to reobtain root again yet so if this works for you while rooted let me know. Finally I believe you'll have to perform this using the stock dialer as I don't believe that the CM dialer will work for this.
Procedure is as follows:
Open dialer and type ##3282#. (##DATA#)
You should now be taken to the epst prompt. Choose "Edit Mode"
You will now be asked for your password. This is your MSL
Next you want to choose "Data Profile"
While in Data Profile hit the "Menu" button at the bottom of the phone.
Next choose "Restore" and allow the phone to reprovision.
Let me know if this works if you try it while rooted as I'd like to reroot again but I'm a little gun shy now that it's fixed again.
I'll give that I try and see what happens. I have to flash a stock ROM first and hope that any changes follow me along back to CM ROM. I am also going to try the Wimax kernal to see if that helps since that ks reporting to be a possibility.

this sorta helped me a bit, but i just also ended up flashing back to 1.77pri and nv, though i still have the latest wimax and radio and 60674prl on myn's rls5, however i'm still experiencing way below average data speeds as compared to what i used to, i have a release day evo with 0002 hardware, and .76 hboot, even my 4g's are slower then what they used to be.
FWIW, I experienced a drop in speed as well. I used to get 1-2 Mbps easy. Now all I get is around 500. Very strange.

i really hope your right, i mean the other day with cmWimax i nailed a 7.61, now i'm lucky if im even in the 3 range for moar gee's, lol, even with reg sense rom's i'm barely in 3 range as well, i have a tower that is only about 200 yards away that is 4g and it still suxor's.
I haven't had a chance to test the above, I'm about to start to do that.
I did try out Sprints Network Speed Test and got results from it above 1.0 finally. Then I tried using the speed test app and it was giving me location in Europo to test? This morning it is back to normal and both the speed test app and Sprints website both were giving the same results - around .80.
I'm going to flash the Wimax for CM and see if that helps out. If not, then I'm going to flash a Sense ROM and do the #DATA# trick listed above.
Here is the website for Sprints speed test website. You'll need the latest Flash installed from the market for it to work.

i have noticed though with this release of myn's that i do keep dropping 4g and reconnecting, something that i have never did before on other dev's rom's.
Well, both attempts to fix it didn't work. The new Wimax for CM didn't give me faster speed and the flashing to Sense ROM to do the ##DATA# didn't help either.
Anyone else have any ideas?
I was using MIUI and it had 4G all the time... then I switched to Virtuous and it had so many problems with reception automatically.
I also tried installing the kernel to fix it, but it didn't work.
so i gave up and I went to CM7 and I am still not getting 4G signal anymore
and I get internet but its ridiculously slow now
PLZ HELP!
could be several things... if it's a rom/radio issue, you're s.o.l. until you can narrow down what's causing it there. did you perform a full wipe between Virtuous and CM7? did you use cwm recovery to perform the wipe? any other weirdness going on besides the apparent lack of HSPA+? I always, even going from one CM-based rom to another, perform a clean wipe either thru adb or, now, thanks to our buddy amazinglarry, using superwipeg2. you might give that a shot (you don't need to wipe efs data unless you're having gps issues, by the way) and install CM7 clean again.
I will say this: when I initially started using the CM7 nightlies, I ran into a weird issue where my "H" icon wouldn't show up, only 3G/E, but I was definitely on HSPA+ as evidenced from speed tests (there's no way I'd be getting 9000+kbps down on 3G). so, very first step: download Speed Test on the app market and, if you're in an area where HSPA+ is strong, see if you can tell whether or not the icon is not displaying for you like what happened in my case. how fast your internet seems to be going isn't really indicative of whether or not you're on HSPA+ or not, you can encounter horrendous lag browsing even in an area where it should be lightning quick. what ended up fixing the missing H icon for me, oddly, was a radio flash. the PC10IMG method of flashing radios is far from intimidating, so even if you're uncomfortable with that kind of stuff, give it a shot. I've had the best luck with the TMO-US post-OTA radio (26.03.02.26) in terms of a good balance between speed and battery life, but ymmv.
if none of that solves your problem, check your APN settings. here is a pretty thorough walkthrough on that.
aaaand if all else fails, call TMO and ask them to give you a hand. of course, don't tell them anything about custom roms or rooting, just tell them you're having a problem where your phone seems to not be receiving HSPA+ signal. it very well could be a goof-up on their end. when I first got my G1 back in the day, I had all sorts of trouble getting 3G and I eventually had to replace my sim card which fixed the problem automatically.
best'a luck.
thank you, it was the Radio. Something must have happened with it somehow you were VERY VERY helpful!
One thing you do have to know as well for Virtuous ROMs is that the so called 4G or H is actually represented as 3G+. So if you look at your signal and see a + behind it, it is using fauxG
EDIT: nm, just ignore what I just said. I completely passed over the fact that you switched to cm7.
I've run Wifi Tether, EasyTether Pro, and ClockworkMod Tether. All give me tethered speeds <= 1Mbps up and down.
This is a Galaxy Nexus LTE with unlocked bootloader and Root. Stock otherwise and no radio update.
Running on OSX 7.2.
I can run the speed test from the same location and get 25Mbps+ while running the test from my phone.
I can do this while running any of the tethering apps as well and I'll still get blazing speeds on my phone, but terrible on my computer.
It's definitely not a USB problem as the computer is USB 2.0 and there are no other devices plugged in.
It's also not a general computer issue as I've tested on other machines, both Mac and Windows.
Anyone have any ideas on how to hunt down the problem?
Looking for any suggestions at all...
I've only run Speed test once while tethering, but my speed was 1Mbps just like you. I should mention that I have a stock SGN and that I have the hotspots option in my plan. My download speed just a minute later using only the phone was 15Mbps.
I wonder if there is some internal throttle in ICS or Verizon's version of it.

I do wired tethering via PDANet and average 3 - 5mbps with this phone. It was about the same before & after root. I think it could also be tied in to the radio(reception issues). With past 4G phones I had both better reception and much faster data speeds. I'd say we're probably going to have to sit tight and hope that Verizon releases a fix soon.
It may be related to the stock ROM. I'm running CM9 and get a cap of around 12mbps on wifi tether. Never tested on USB, but I have to assume the cap is due to Wi-Fi limitations.
When tethering via USB, your tether speeds will be limited to the same speed as the slowest USB device connected to your PC at the time. That means unplug all other USB peripherals (where possible) or upgrade them to faster models if you want improve your tether speeds. Koush posted this in his notes somewhere (either in the app description itself on the market, or on his Google+ page) - I remember reading his full disclosure about this issue.
TL;DR version = unplug all USB devices and see if your tether speeds increases. If so, plug them back in, one at a time, until your speeds slow, which can help you determine which device is the culprit. Replace said device with a faster model, or don't use it when tethering.
Edit: I found it! Here's my source for the Tether being limited by your slowest USB device. The quote is here: "Tether speeds slow?
Your USB speed is limited to the speed of the *slowest* peripheral you have connected. It is recommended you unplug any unnecessary/slow USB peripherals to get maximum Tether speeds." That quote is taken right from the app description itself, which can be found alongside the app here: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.koushikdutta.tether

I don't think it's a radio issue. My data speeds to the phone are REALLY high. The only time I have a problem is when the data passes on to the computer. The speed I see on my phone is never an issue regardless of how the phone is configured (to tether). The speed issue is only on the computer side. It's also not a computer issue as I've stated above.
Last I heard, VZW is planning to "fix" signal issues by making the signal icon report a higher value than what it's getting. The DB reading won't change, so they're not lying but they're not telling an honest story either. Surprise!

To clarify my response in this post, I'm not attacking anyone's response. I'm only trying to narrow everything down for anyone who may stumble upon this in the future.
Thanks for the input everyone!
I did a backup and wipe. Installed tether and ran before a restore. Same problems...
I will try a different ROM and get back to you all.
I usually get 20 mb/s down on 4bars of LTE, when tethering with wifi tether beta 3 Located Here and i got 6mb/s tethering to an iphone 4s and 2 ipod touches
I agree I have no problems pulling over 25Mbps using the WiFi Tether app that was linked above. I will say that I would recommend going to the site and go under downloads and use the 3.1 pre113 (experimental version). I have found this to be the most stable for me with the best connectivity.

Understood.
My issue is not with the tethering software though... something deeper within the system configuration is awry.
I loaded the 'AOKP - Team Kang -Build 15' ROM and tethering is blazing. I guess I'll just bounce around on ROMs until I find the cleanest build that is close to stock.
I considered loading stock and wiping out everything, but I don't want to lose what's on /sdcard/ .
From what I understand, loading the stock ROM will completely wipe.
If anyone knows a way around this, please let me know.

When you are flashing different roms you should always wipe data and cache to avoid any issues. I am using the stock rom and then I rooted with CF-Root through fastboot and have no issue with WiFi Tether. I stock with the 113 experimental as it seems to work the best for me on this set up. I would just copy you sd content and the paste it back over once flashed back to factory.
Right. I was trying to avoid copying the SD content again. I have quite a bit of data... :-/
I switched back over to my stock backup because the custom ROMs I tried all crash when I restore from Titanium. Seems as though they all won't run unless you keep the gapps that the dev includes in the ROM.
After some more consideration, it seems as though my tether is pulling data from the 3G side while the rest of the phone runs happily on 4G.
Any ideas?

More info about my problem at the above thread.
Still struggling with this issue...
I have upgraded to 4.0.4 and I noticed speed improvements that lasted the period of the previous weekend. No clue why...
Some other details that might be helpful:
Android-Wifi-Tether is slower than the stock tether with both upload and download speeds slow.
Have tried third party ROMS and experience the same issue. (Slow download, fast upload)
EasyTether Pro now works as you'd expect 4G tether to! Speeds as fast as everything else that runs from my phone.
ClockworkMod Tether is slow like Android-Wifi-Tether. Up and Down speeds < 1M
One server in Columbia, SC on speedtest.net reports speeds > 6M down and 2M up.
Does anyone have any clues as to the difference in the way these two programs operate?
I'm on a Mac and when I first connect I get an error that there is no internet available. I have to turn wifi off and back on from the computer. I leave the phone alone for this.
I've run speed tests on Windows machines with same results
I know someone with a Mifi hotspot that has the same issues I've been describing here. Even with the Columbia, SC server on speedtest.net
Verizon has yet to make contact with him.
Any ideas?
Hello! So I have some questions. All help is greeeeatly appreciated.
I installed CM10. Wifi Tether wouldn't work. Log would say Fail when trying to set adhoc. Barnacle wouldn't even detect that I was rooted. Super User wouldn't pop up for it. The native tethering would turn on but devices couldn't connect. The one time my laptop did connect it was with limited connectivity.
So I decided to go back to FC09 2.3.6. Wifi tether... works. But it's crazy slow. Ping stays around 150-175 which is ok, but the speeds. I'm updating Guild Wars 2 and I see the speed hover around 1KB/s to 5KB/s and then it'll jump up to 30KB/s and back down. And then it'll peak around 80KB/s and drop back down. Is this supposed to happen?
I came from an EVO 3D and it's speed was very consistent so I've gotten used to that, but I broke it. Plus the Epic 4g has much better development, even now. And the speeds seem consistent on the Epic 4g itself as well, just not when tethering.
Also... if there's any ideas on how to get it functioning properly on CM10 I'd realllllllly love that. Thank you!!!
