[Q] Blank LCD Fix? - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My rooted G2 running Cyanogen 6.1.1 overclocked via Setcpu on demand recently turned itself off. When I pulled the battery and rebooted I got a blank screen with vertical lines slowly appearing. Hours later i got a blank white screen. Now its completely blank with the backlight lit. I get haptic feedback when unlocking, grabbing icons and using the menu keys and the volume rocker beeps or vibrates the phone. I can't seem to open Pandora or my music app (I know where they are on my home screen). My sim card fried and I'm afraid to put the new one in this phone to see if calls and notification still come in. ADB is responsive and commands work. It will boot into recovery, etc. but the screen is still blank. I tried doing a Nandroid back up using my new G2 as a reference guide to navigate the recovery but that didn't do anything. I will likely try to flash a fresh rom next. Is this a software issue or hardware? I had to buy a new G2 as I'm not on a plan and bought this one used and would like to recover my cost by fixing the old. Any input or help is much appreciated.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1096406 sounds like your screen went out differently, but is responding similar to mine. When you get a call can you still slide to answer?

My sim card fried and I'm afraid to put the new one in it for fear of that frying too.

XDA Orbit Screen Problem

Hi Guys.
I've had my orbit for about 3 weeks now, and its been perfect. I had a spare 512mb microSD card lying about so I used that, but my 2Gb microSD card came in the post yesterday.
I put the card into the phone, and then plugged the phone into my computer via USB. The screen turned off, and no matter what I did, it wouldn't come back on.
I reset it using the small button on the side (sticking my stylex pen into it) and it restarted itself, showing the splash screen no problem, but as soon as you would expect the Today screen to show, the screen goes off. It get's weirder, because if I hold down the camera button to turn that on, the screen switches itself on, and you can use the camera no problem. If i hit the windows key, the menu appears, but if I try clicking an icon, the screen goes dead again.
Also, sometimes (not always, don't ask why) if I leave it for a couple of minutes, the screen slowly appears, as if the backlight is very very dim. But the second i tap anywhere, or touch a button, it goes off again.
I can still answer calls, and my alarms still go off. The phone seems to work perfectly, but just not the screen. I think that it might be the backlight having been turned so far down its off, but I don't know how I would go about reseting that.
Sorry for the long story, but any help would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers
have you tried to make a hard reset?
Man I had the exact sane issue. Its to do with the backlight. I had to angle the screen to try and see anything on it, then changed the backlight to full and made sure it didnt switch off after certain time, everything fine since then. dont know how it happened.
exactly like fubofo wrote, try to unplug, screen should be visible again, check backlight prop.-and plug it in.
i have the same problem this appears sometimes.I think this is a damn bug that appears randomized. It happend to me like 6 times.I have the o2 xda orbit with german o2 rom. What's about yours? it dims the light under the normal makeable settings this sucks. And the camera works because the light settings goes automaticly to the highest settings in camera mode.
Hi guys,
I remember having that problem but it was when I tried some programs, including HTC X-button and another called Invisible Shooter. I haven't got any further incident after uninstalling them.
Do you think what you've encountered with may also link to some program you've installed?
BUSPBP
Totally confirmed! Had same issue after replacing a touch screen. Thanks, guys, for a clue!

TP2 Is On But Screen Black? Help!

I'm wondering if anyone has found a fix for this. I have a Verizon TP2, and yesterday the screen wouldn't come on. I can put the volume up and down (and hear the volume tones), press the hardkeys on the bottom front and those lights come on, slide the phone open and the keyboard backlight comes on. The screen itself won't light up however. If I soft reset with the internal reset button, or take the battery out then put it back in, the screen works fine until the first time I press the standby on the top left of the phone to darken the screen. Once it's dark, it stays dark until I pull the battery again. I can also receive calls, but the incoming call doesn't light up the screen either. I've already tried reflashing my ROM (which I know is a working ROM as it's the same one I've used for months). Ideas? Help!
Sounds like a rom issue or software issue. Go back to stock rom. If problem continues send for a replacement. Also do you have throttlelock or other locker installed, if so uninstall and then test.
Had a similar issue out of the blue yesterday. Phone would go to sleep and not wake up unless it was reset. It was like the power button was not connected. I had to do a hard reset and load up a saved backup. All is good now. Somtimes files get corrupt.
This has been happening to me over the last couple of weeks. It can be okay for two or three days and then happen twice in a day.
I'm on the 6.5 stock ROM, the only thing I've changed recently is the SD card. It's not so bad that I'm going to Hard reset yet (too many settings and high scores to be lost!) but if it does I'll have to. I'm not inclined to flash another ROM given I might have to send off for a repair sometime soon though.
Well my issue is that it's happening even after reflashing a rom, both my original rom and the new Verizon 6.5 upgrade rom. The phone is clearly on, but the screen backlight isn't coming on. I can even press on the screen and hear the dialpad tones as if I'm about to make a call. Is there some sort of reset that might work aside from taking the battery out for awhile? I've tried that, but so far that hasn't worked.
Hmm - sounds like a hardware issue which is more worrying, have you tried HTC support?.
HTC support as in call HTC directly, or do some sort of HTC forums? I've always received my support from XTC
Still having phone issues. I can receive still, but once the screen goes to sleep, that's all she wrote till I pull the battery again.
Well it turned out to be a hardware issue (something loose in the base). I accidentally discovered that if I pressed hard on the headphone or power jack on the bottom of the phone, that the screen would come on. Called Verizon and they overnighted me another free of charge. This one is working great so far...
I got a similar issue, mine screen turn off when fully slide out the keyboard. I was told it could be the "flex".

Is My Tilt 2 Dead?

I checked email then I sent a text. A few minutes later, I got a response. I hit REPLY and the screen went white. I don't know why. It's never been dropped or put in water, etc. The phone had been in my pocket all day and was close to a full charge. I couldn't power down so I removed the battery and turned it back on. The phone vibrated as it does when it boots up but the screen remained black. I flipped out the keyboard and it was backlit as usual.
I tried a few times and never got anything going. The screen remained black but the phone got hot. Just now, I noticed the amber light blinking but it went solid when I plugged in the charger. I attempted to power it up once more and called from my landline- goes straight to voicemail, no rings. Hmm. Is my Tilt 2 Dead?
Any advice on how to resurrect my phone? AT&T gave me this refurbished model about 4 months ago (60 day warranty?) to replace the Fuze that died at 13 months (12 month warranty). I just want a phone that can last as long as my contract.
try to put it in bootloader mode.
do this by holding the volume down button and powering on the device (if its already on then volume down button and press the soft reset button on the side of ur device with the stylus). Keep holding the volume down button until the 3 colored screen comes on with text in red.
if you can get it in bootloader than you can save the device
Sometimes mine hangs on startup several times in a row, to fix it, i take out the battery, put it back in, hold down the power button and volume down button till its in bootloader then soft reset with the button on the side of the device and it boots up
if that doesn't work then you may need to hard-reset/flash a new rom (all your data will be erased). If nothing comes on the screen then your screen could be dead.
I charged it all night. When plugged in, the amber light is solid. When unplugged, the light turned off. The phone doesn't power up.
It did not respond to a soft-reset (holding the volume down button and powering on the device) nor a hard-reset (press and hold both the send and end hardkeys).
AT&T is telling me it's dead. Um, I've got a different ROM loaded on this. Can I return it in this state? If they cant resurrect it, it doesn't matter?
Do I need to restore factory settings and, if so, how?
And, Warranty Dept. wants me to buy another one. They gave me this refurbished one four months ago with 90 day warranty. What are my chances here?

If the indicator light never went green, the battery may be at fault. Just a thought.
I have heard of the black screen that comes up and ppl have to soft reset to get anything to work. Never had this problem till lately. My fone was on and plugged in all nite. Never had a prob with the battery, only had this fone 3 months and now all nite and day the screen has been goin black then not waking up at all. I did install Cookies Home Tab and the CTHE Editor last nite along with the newest SRS WOW HD sound.... anyway, put my fone on charge, left it on as I always do, woke up today and had no way up waking it up, and the charge light was still orange. I took off the back and used the reset button on the right to restart it. Unplugged it, then plugged it back in. The light immediately turned green yet when the device powered on and the screen went to black, it would NOT come off the black screen. I checked the settings for the lock screen, nothings on... I am using Energy ROM 6.5 OS 5.2.23569 build 23563.5.5.0 ... awesome ROM and yet Ive never had this prob. Had this ROM for the past 2 weeks without a hitch, installed Cookies Home Tab and the Editor progs and now this. ... any help?
EDIT: Also in the time the screen was blacked I never got a single text, MMS, fone call or email...

OK, now it is clearer. It happened AFTER you installed software. You need to do a hard reset.
Power down the phone. Hold both left and right phone keys (red and green) while you hit the power button. The phone should reset itself back to factory condition. Unfortunately you will lose all data on the phone (the SD card data should be OK). This should fix your problem.
Yeah, its totally dead now except.... when plugged into the charger, I get an amber light. I will stop by a store and try a different battery.
By the way, AT&T Customer Service told me they will not replace my 4 month old phone because it is past the 3 month warranty.

Already done that Steve with no luck. Next step?
If the Tilt 2 is dead, I have to replace it. Any suggestions? I was happy with this model. My big requirement is real keyboard.
if its dead its dead... if you need another just go get another I guess.... Sounds pretty crappy though. I got my phone in December and just got a warranty replacement today. They said my warranty was good till the 1 year point of when the phone was purchased or 90 days after I received the new phone (if it was close to the end of my original warranty) I assume you were out of your original warranty or bought a used phone or something. But yeah... try another battery before diving in to another phone for sure.
Possible fix
Ok, Ive kept lookin for this solution and so far, its worked. On the lock screen, especially with the new custom ROMs, the lockscreen has to be set to "classic". Something about the new Slide to unlock feature is killin the screen to black, and that makes the fone unusable... meaning when the fone goes to black, it will ONLY charge. No fone calls, no texts recieved, no emails, no nothin... calls go straight to voicemail when ppl try to call u. (when u restart the fone u may get ur emails and any MMS messages, but not texts or missed calls) If u have the Cookies Home Tab, like me, it would be labeled "Windows" lock screen that u will need. (From Home screen, click "MENU", then "Cookies Home Tab Editor", then "locksreen Settings", then under Unlock Style, click "Windows". then click "menu" at the bottom of the same screen, then click "apply settings". When u exit, Sense will refresh and ur good to go ... Ill repost in a few days to see if thats it or not.
Also I heard less talk, but some about it being an issue with the SD card. That one said to remove ur SD card, install a new ROM and reformat ur card before installing it back into the device... *(Be sure to transfer all info on card to PC before u format, formatting will erase everything from the SD card)*

[Q] Need Help in Laymen's Terms...Tilt 2 Stuck on Red, Green, Blue, and White Screen.

I have a HTC Tilt 2... I have been having a ton of problems with this phone but when it really freaks out, I usually take the battery out, let it sit a few days and then it starts working again. My phone started doing some funny things today so I restarted it as usual, it freezes and I remove the battery. When I turned it back on I got a red, green, blue and white screen with text:
RHOD300 32M MI-BC
SPL-0.87.0000
MicroP(LED) 0x0A
MicroP(KEY) 0x04
TURBO HW/TURBO SW
TP MFG DATA
498, 526 792,855
795,211 214,211
223,845 Calibrated
This has never happened before.
This RGB&W screen used to say serial when it first happend a few hours ago but then I installed ActiveSync and plugged it into PC, now says USB.
ActiveSync won't recognize my device, it does appear in My Computer.
I tried following directions in another forum to turn the device off then hold the pickup/hangup/power button at the same time...a different screen appeared than the forum directed, a gray screen with "Trigger Ramdump Mode"...then I couldn't do anything.
I can restart it back into the tri-color screen...
I need help in laymen's terms. I've never tried to change anything about the phone's operating system, I've never done an update or anything, I do not have the Tilt2 CD.
Right now I have my SIM card and my SanDisk card removed, I was afraid it could get erased when I tried the pickup/hangup/power button trick.
PLEASE SOMEONE HELP!!!!!!!!!
This screen is called the bootloader. Its used by technicians (or more advanced users) to load the OS or "ROM" onto the phone. It may be stuck in bootloader because some of the OS files are damaged or missing, and the OS is not booting up. Or possibly even a hardware failure.
Pulling the battery may/may not be the culprit. I've read someone on here mention that pulling the battery can corrupt files on the phone. If the phone is lagging, frozen, then pulling the battery is not the correct way to restart the phone. The correct method of restarting the phone by soft reset is done by sticking the stylus into the small red hole/button on the side of the phone, while the batter cover is off:
http://www.hardreset.eu/htc_touch_pro_2_rhodium_hard_reset_soft_reset_en.html
Pulling the battery is only a method of last resort, as the soft reset button will work in almost all cases.
Hard reset by holding TALK, END and POWER is probably not going to work. It requires the OS to be working, and you are not even getting to the point that the OS is booting.
Its supposed to say "USB" when the phone is connected to your PC via the USB cable. If I remember properly, it will say "Serial" in bootloader for a second when you plug the phone to USB, and switch to saying "USB" after that. USB is a form of serial connection, after all (USB = Universal Serial Bus). As long as it says "USB", you are in somewhat good shape, since it SHOULD allow you to try the following.
Try downloading the latest ROM from HTC. This is actually a newer version than the ROM that was originally on your phone, but still "official" ATT software. And by most accounts, better than the old ROM. Since its official software, installing this will not endanger any warranty you may still have on the phone.
Its the first file on the following page ("ROM Update"):
http://www.htc.com/us/support/tilt-2-att/downloads/
With your phone connected to your PC by USB, run the .exe ROM update file and follow the instructions that come up on your PC screen. It should work. Try it and let us know.
Bear in mind, you will lose any personal data you have on the phone (contacts, texts, emails, etc). But you've probably already lost those.
Its possible there is some other way out of it, I certainly don't know all the tricks. But in searching around this site, being stuck in bootloader seems to require flashing a new ROM to get out of it. And it seems that you are prepared to lose your personal data, based on the fact that you were already trying to hard reset (the TALK, END, and POWER button process) which also dumps all your data. And flashing the official ROM is really pretty easy to accomplish. Just a pain that you have to re-setup the phone again, since it will basically be returned to factory condition (but in this case, a slightly newer version of the OS).
The SAME thing happened to My HTC Tilt 2 an Hour ago (1/13/2010 4:46pm)
The same exact thing occurred to my HTC Tilt 2 today. It is stuck on the red green, blue and white screen with the same yellow 'config' type message . The white bottom strip has the black letters "serial" typed in.
My problem also, is that the phone stays "on" until i pull the battery out. The moment i place the battery back in the phone, the keys stay lit up instantly and the screen is black. When pressing the power button, then i get the same red, green, blue and white screen.
Ive tried holding the talk/end/power buttons all at the same time, it doesnt make a difference. So i cant get to the step where you press the "volume up" key so to initiate the master reset.
Ihad no idea the HTC Tilt2 would just fry like this. I had no additional apps that were unusual to the norm, i even had more free space than used on the set. its not like the phone was over loaded.
Hmmmmm.... help!!!
Re-read above about "soft-reset" and you might want to try reflash your phone.

Read my post above. Your OS is missing or damaged, and you need to reflash (re-install) it.
Master reset re-loads the OS from the ROM area of your memory. The ROM is damaged, so their is nothing to reload. That's why its stuck in bootloader (tri-color screen).

Today, i stuck the battery in the phone (Tilt2) pressed the hard reset keys. THIS time it allowed the volume-UP key to finally kick in the reset to default cycle. I got the phone working again and have restored my last backup So, I havent lost anything.
The only problem now i am noticing is the light on the keyboard never goes off. Even when I power the phone down, "the keyboard stays lit".. I am having to remove the battery just to keep it from draining when the phone is not in use.hmmm. is there a regEdit key I can modify that may turn off the keys? id rather have no light at all over no battery juice. If i can edit the key to turn off the backlight on the keyboard permanantly , this will be a temp fix for me until i get a new phone.
as anyone ever experienced this?

Well, today 1/18/2011: the above issue seem to have vanished altogether. Very good. I did nothing but what i was resolved to do until I buy a new phone (take the battery out so to completely power down the phone and lights).
Today, my ole third hand decided to work like normal! Yay!. All of a sudden it rebooted, and now the keyboard backlight turns off when the keypad is closed and you can see it light up when extended. and most importantly: the back lighty for the keypad goes "off" when the phone is powerd down. go figure this one.
I am glad its working like normal now, but i know its time to get a new phone. These are just symptoms of the "big-crash" soon to come. I am backing up every day.
For now, very very glad my phone is back to "normal"

[Q] phone is stuck at splash screen/lock screen

Hello, I could really use some help with this..
I have a rooted Samsung Galaxy Nexus (Verizon) using an older version of SuperSU (think around like .98). I also
installed the free version of Titanium Backup to uninstall apps... And everything was going fine. I consulated with forums and app lists of the safe apps to uninstall. I kept uninstalling apps and everything was fine, but then I rebooted my phone one day and everything wasn't. The phone boots and the nexus X splash screen appears. I think it usually stays stuck there unless I press buttons, boot in safe mode, or charge it. So then it gets to the lock screen in some of these cases. The notification bar at the top works and the screen will flash on for about 5 seconds before it goes black. And this will keep happening usually. Sometimes just the area where the wallpaper is supposed to be will be black, not everything is - the notification bar, lock symbol, and time all appear as normal on the lock screen.
The touchscreen doesn't appear to take any input really, expect that you can slide the lock symbol to unlock the phone... Only thing is, it doesn't actually do anything like bring you to the home screen like it should. This could be much easier to fix, but I uninstalled about 3 or 4 apps before this happened and off the top of my head I don't remember what they were. If I wrote them down I not don't know where that went. I recall that I uninstalled at least one package that had the word google in it. I also do not recall if I uninstalled the one time init.apk. I have data on this phone so if anyone could give me a direction to recovering the data or something.
My overall technical expertise is decent, but I'm more of a newbie when it comes to smartphone hacking.
One more thing, I forget to mention that the phone doesn't turn off from holding down the power button. I either have to wait until it dies or take out the battery.
Have you had any luck with this. Mine phone is having the same problem.
