It is quite difficult to root desire HD. It would be very nice if someone who knows how to do it, to make a CLEAR post from A-z. First downgrade? S-off? Adb errors? Gold card? It's a LOT of stuff to read out there about how to do it right but since there are many changes and updates since the first rooted phone, it would be nice if someone will do this from scratch.
Thanks in advance.

its not difficult either,
1. install visionary+ from android market.
enable debugging from settings> application >development.
on visionary press TEMP ROOT after it done (sometimes took 2 or more tries)
then press PERM root.
there u go u have permanent root htc desire hd (works only with 1.32.405 ver)

I suggest that you just do some reading and learn it. I have spent dozens of hours working on my guides and tools, and 99% of the people who are capable of reading, succeed in the process.
The guides cannot become any easier. Downgrade is your first step, follow the thread. Then there is a link to Radio S-OFF tool in the end of downgrade guide. Follow that link.. You get the point.

In short what you need to do...

1. Temp root with Visionary (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zEMnIOb3bIQ&NR=1)
2. Perm root
3. Do your Radio S-OFF

I kinda understand where this guy is coming from. I'm fully confident on the actual root process, my problem lies in actual downgrading. Fair play it will take an idiots guide to get me rooted on my hd. Just wished it was as simple as my G1 was.
I'm aware of needing an sdk file to downgrade, but the guides here don't reflect on that.
In no way is my post meant to be or sound disrespectful in anyway. You guys here do an amazing job, you really do and I (as many others) here appreciate it 100%.
My reasons for root are solely selfish. I want root to allow for use of cachemate louder volume hack and hopefully better battery life.
In my G1 days I had to flash my fone like a whore flashes her pants, but that was just to keep he phone usable.

Thank you audiavant for more specific instructions.
Anyway last day I was stuck when trying to downgrade. I have HTC sync but not the desire sdk and maybe because of that, Adb was not working. I'll try again this evening, hopefully don't get a brick after that

Easiest Way To Root ?

I have a DHD with 1.72.405.3 unlocked and unbranded.
What is the easiest way to Downgrade and Root my phone ?
& how much of a chance is there that i brick my phone ?
I've seen a couple of threads about Rooting , i just don't know which one to use.
Try reading here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905003

I have to disagree on that, nobody has bricked a desire hd yet. Chances of bricking are very low if you use my tools, because my tools check if everything is ok before doing anything.

Thanks for the info
What's the difference between Root and S-Off ?
Root is a permission to do stuff in the current ROM, S-OFF is a setting deeper down in the device that for example sets the device's internal memory to read/write state instead of read only. Basically it allows you to flash stuff.

Thanks for the reply again, i think i'll stick with Rooting my phone so i can use some apps i couldn't use before.
I might S-OFF later on when i want to flash some custom roms
Actually there is no chance to brick your device with just rooting it...
Visionary + Has never, at least to my knowledge broken a phone; the only risk to damage of the phone is when flashing, and if you have used jkoljo's S-OFF tool, you can always get access to the bootloader, and therefore access clockworkmod, or reset the phone using the PGD128.zip (or whatever that is called, I cant remember the exact name) Happy flashing

I have to agree with you.. Your tool have help me in my journey to root and s-off.. But still have to follow your instruction, so that i won't do anything weird with my phone..
Sorry for all the noob questions, but if i Root and S-Off my phone how easy would it be to go back to stock unrooted ?
Follow this...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905003
Be careful and read the instructions a few times.
Rooting shouldn't brick your dhd...flashing the radio is the most common way of bricking it (a know of a coupl eof dudes who glanced at the instructions and proceeded to brick them)
BUT there are some v good guides here and on youtube...
Ps...
And have fun!!!!!!!!

[Q] Hope little Localized help to root htc wildfire

Hello I need help I am the happy owner of a htc wildfire (android 2.2.1)
would like to root it but how do you do just that.
would be cool if you could install android 2.3 on it.
do not know whether it is possible
hope someone can help me with it
thank you in advance
from Jakob
Search this forum before posting. There's even a thread just a few posts below yours titled Noob Guide To 2.2.1 or something like that. Surely that will answer your questions no?

You have to get s-off first. You have to find somewhere that has xtc clip to do this. Then you need to find somewhere on the net a stock RUU to downgrade to android 2.1 and set the bootloader version to 0.80. You can then use unrevoked to gain root. This may not work with version 3.3 of unrevoked, if so find a copy of unrevoked 3.2 on the net. This version may hang at 'rebooting into recovery' but at this point the phone is rooted and you can close down unrevoked and reboot the phone from recovery. I did all of the above 2 days ago so I can assure you it works.
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA Premium App
As said previously you can't root via a software method (unrevoked)
you do need a XTC clip but had my device rooted by a shop in England via a postal service, which was reasonably priced.
You needn't downgrade the boot loader as previously mentioned, can be confusing difficult and there's no need. Simply install clockwork mod recovery, install the rooted ROM you like and voila you are done!
if you need any more answers feel free to ask there's plenty on threads answering the same question.

[Q] Missing superuser?

So I've recently gotten my Desire Z rooted, and I'm trying to install a custom ROM.
However Clockwork keeps telling me that my phone is not rooted, ("You must root your phone for ROM Manager to function. Superuser was not found at "/system/bin/su" or "/system/xbin/su"".
Even so my phone has SU installed as well as busybox. How do I need to go about fixing this?
Thank you for any help!
first of all what method did you follow to gain root?
also do any other rooted apps work? setcpu, titanium, adfree ?
I used the HTCdev method to unlock my bootloader then I used the Fre3vo exploit and pushed the superuser and busybox apks and installed them both.
Titanium does not work either.
I believe in order to get the su to work you have to actually flash it as a .zip the first time. Also, do you have s.off? That htcdev.com method is horse crap if you ask me, though it will get you unlocked.
Sent from my HTC Vision using xda premium
It managed to get my bootloader unlocked.
But no I don't have S-off. Would having flashed it from a .zip changed anything else?
Also I can flash ClockWorkRecovery without even a little bit of an Issue.
well s-off means no root, follow the wiki, downgrade and then root.
the htc unlocked bootloader is just a stepping stone leading to nowhere
probably the most you will get out of it is confirming your g2 is void of warranty with htc
so follow the wiki, it isnt to hard and you will be much happier than trying to cheat your way into root!
good luck!
Alright, well thanks for your help fellas!
no problem, just make sure you read the wiki first and understand it, if not search the threads and im sure someone has had the same question. but over all it takes from 30min for the experienced up to 2hrs if your lost the whole time. leave the appropriate amount of time and youll be a happy camper soon enough!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1453066
This is the thread you need to follow if you have already used htcdev method. You will have to relock bootloader, then downgrade, then root and s.off.
Also, if you have any further problems talk to that nipqer, he is really good.

follow this guide, since you have "the official HTC unlocked bootloader" which as i said before is almost worthless (not complaining to you but to htc) i believe you need to do a few things first before you can downgrade, you need to be at froyo for this method to work, dont have time to search for you right now but im sure you'll find the appropriate steps to take if you search a little
HTC Unlock only lets you flash ROMs through fastboot. As already mentioned, it doesn't give you root, S-Off, and you can't flash straight from ROM Manager or recovery.

[Q] BEST Root Guide For G2

Okay,
All I want to know is the best way to perm root my HTC G2. I have google searched and went through forums on xda and a few other sites. And all it did was give me a headache. Lol If anyone can help me with this, Please get back to me via this post or pm me. Thanks for your time! >_<
The Wiki method. Here it is:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/HTC_Vision#Rooting_the_Vision_.28G2.2FDZ.29_and_DHD
XDA User strawmetal had also done a detailed guide but I can't find it now.
The gfree/visionary method is another option that is pretty safe and easy, if you're still on 2.2. Not to be confused with the visionary perm root method.
The wiki method is the best way, but can be difficult if you don't know how to use adb. If you need to downgrade your phone, you'll have to learn adb anyway.
Please don't go anywhere near the Visionary tool. Use the method in the XDA Wiki. It might look confusing at first, but read it carefully and if you don't understand something then ask about it here, there are plenty of people who can help you.
There's a guide to setting up and using adb linked from my signature (if you are reading via a brower and not something like the XDA app).
Sent from my Desire Z running CM7.
Use the wiki method. It looks confusing but once you get into it it is not hard at all. Just follow the instructions to the letter.

Sweetness!
Thanks Guys! I will go with the wiki guide as I'm familiar with adb and I have 2.3.4, So do I downgrade?
Yes, you have to downgrade first.

How long should phone take to reboot after final step in gaining S-OFF
Have a quick question. Followed Strawmetal's guide for my G2, for both downgrading and gaining perm root. Got to final step both MD5#2 and MD5#3 checksums matched as they should. All previous steps matched also. So the final step then is type reboot. I did so, phone rebooted, but now 5 minutes later it's still on the "htc" screen. Impatient noob or brick?
It's not a brick if it displays anything ;P

There is no EASY way to achieve s-off as aahk is retired. But, if you are skilled enough, this is an ADVANCED method to achieve s-off - http://tau.shadowchild.nl/attn1/?p=411
Take note however that those method is unsupported, which means that no one is responsible to help you to understand it and help you along the process. Glevitan apparently is working on the automated s-off tools, so you can wait for it to be released. However, there is no exact time of when the tools will be released, and maybe it will never be, only he knows.
You can gain root however, using glevitan's easy root tools, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2169515
Make sure to read the thread carefully to understand how it works. :good:

Is Gfree v.2 alright to use to gain sec off ON A DEVICE RUNNING a JB kernel? (3.0.62_JellyTime_42_R5-g8e08b6e-dirty) ... or is easyradiotool v2.2 any better?
I have goldcard and simunlock/SU/root already
I have no idea what those tools are. If you just want to flash a custom ROM just flash a recovery.
lol, sorry, dude - PM'd you with an explanation... going back to square one.
