Hello I need help I am the happy owner of a htc wildfire (android 2.2.1)
would like to root it but how do you do just that.
would be cool if you could install android 2.3 on it.
do not know whether it is possible
hope someone can help me with it
thank you in advance

Search this forum before posting. There's even a thread just a few posts below yours titled Noob Guide To 2.2.1 or something like that. Surely that will answer your questions no?

You have to get s-off first. You have to find somewhere that has xtc clip to do this. Then you need to find somewhere on the net a stock RUU to downgrade to android 2.1 and set the bootloader version to 0.80. You can then use unrevoked to gain root. This may not work with version 3.3 of unrevoked, if so find a copy of unrevoked 3.2 on the net. This version may hang at 'rebooting into recovery' but at this point the phone is rooted and you can close down unrevoked and reboot the phone from recovery. I did all of the above 2 days ago so I can assure you it works.

As said previously you can't root via a software method (unrevoked)
you do need a XTC clip but had my device rooted by a shop in England via a postal service, which was reasonably priced.
You needn't downgrade the boot loader as previously mentioned, can be confusing difficult and there's no need. Simply install clockwork mod recovery, install the rooted ROM you like and voila you are done!
if you need any more answers feel free to ask there's plenty on threads answering the same question.

It is quite difficult to root desire HD. It would be very nice if someone who knows how to do it, to make a CLEAR post from A-z. First downgrade? S-off? Adb errors? Gold card? It's a LOT of stuff to read out there about how to do it right but since there are many changes and updates since the first rooted phone, it would be nice if someone will do this from scratch.
Thanks in advance.

I suggest that you just do some reading and learn it. I have spent dozens of hours working on my guides and tools, and 99% of the people who are capable of reading, succeed in the process.
The guides cannot become any easier. Downgrade is your first step, follow the thread. Then there is a link to Radio S-OFF tool in the end of downgrade guide. Follow that link.. You get the point.
In short what you need to do...

I kinda understand where this guy is coming from. I'm fully confident on the actual root process, my problem lies in actual downgrading. Fair play it will take an idiots guide to get me rooted on my hd. Just wished it was as simple as my G1 was.
I'm aware of needing an sdk file to downgrade, but the guides here don't reflect on that.
In no way is my post meant to be or sound disrespectful in anyway. You guys here do an amazing job, you really do and I (as many others) here appreciate it 100%.
My reasons for root are solely selfish. I want root to allow for use of cachemate louder volume hack and hopefully better battery life.
In my G1 days I had to flash my fone like a whore flashes her pants, but that was just to keep he phone usable.

Thank you audiavant for more specific instructions.
Anyway last day I was stuck when trying to downgrade. I have HTC sync but not the desire sdk and maybe because of that, Adb was not working. I'll try again this evening, hopefully don't get a brick after that

Is there no ' how to' root thread? It seems like everything needed to root and install a custom rom is spaced out between many threads. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks.

If you're only on 2.2, you could root. You'd have to get s-off and there's a couple tutorials on that I think. I'm mobile right now so I can't post links, but if you're on gingerbread (2.3.3) in this case, you can't root quite yet.

Rosco, you coming over from the eris forum? I figure this would be easy for you. Anyway I'm on mobile so I can't link it right now but check the alpharev thread in dev or the revolutionary thread, it explains how to get s-off and it will install recovery for you. Then you can find your rom you like the best and flash it.
Sent from my Incredible 2 using Tapatalk
AlphaRevX-Beta 2 was the way. Now it seems they have tied up with unrevoked and the new site is http://revolutionary.io/. Rest of the stuff looks to be the same.
Remember these things just achieve S-off and permit a recovery. The rest of the stuff still has to be installed. Then you should install the rest of the patches (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1160745). The steps are basically
Install htc synch and then remove htc synch. The reason is that you need the drivers. Next go into the site and follow instructions. You may need to download and install the HBOOT drivers. The system should be in <Charge> + <USB Debug Enabled> mode. Make sure you have noted the Serial number of the phone. Now go in for AlphaRevX (sorry Revolutionary) as per the first link. It will download the software as well as ask you for the Serial no and generate a key. Now execute AlphaRevX and a CMD box will open. When prompted give the key (copy / Cut and paste do not work). Then it will work by itself and get you S-off. You may reboot at the end <Vol_Down>+<Power> and then do a backup. Then download the CWM image to the root (link 2)of the SD card and install it. Next time you reboot you will have root access etc. You can install Titanium and co.
Thanks guys. Just one more stupid question: where is my serial number? It's been so long since I rooted my eris and I'm feeling a little rusty.
Sent from my ADR6350 using XDA App
Go to settings/aboutphone/phone identity for serial number
Also when using the Revolutionary software, when you first run it, it will give you the phone info (serial number) as well to generate the key.
The alpharev/revolutionary website says the HTC Droid Incredible 2 (vivow) 0.97.0000 is supported, which I have, but my new DINC2 came with GB 2.3.3. Can I still install S-OFF? Will I crash at some point, brink my phone??

Hello XDA Community,
I am fairly new to the concept of rooting an android device and I have no idea where to start. I understand what rooting is and what it will allow me to do, but I just have no idea how to get started
I was looking around the forums and reading different topics on how to root the HTC Desire Z (or my G2 for short), but a lot of the topics take me to links to other topics, which have links to other topics which have a lot of technical things that are not friendly to a first time rooter (What is S-OFF/S-ON?? Why would I need to do that and how??).
I recently allowed my G2/HTC Desire Z to upgrade to the new Gingerbread 2.3.4, and to my understanding, there is no simple way to get this rooted. After reading the topics, I do see that there is a way around it, but I'm just at a loss as to where to start.
Is there anybody out there that is willing to help me out? If so, that would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

Thanks a bunch for this.
I read your thread, I also have the htc G2 (tmobile) and it is in stock gingerbread 2.3.4 not 2.3.3
I was wondering wich phone u have to be exact, the desire Z is the UK version of the g2.
Also I was wondering if u were able to root your phone with the method that was provided to you.

The above linked method will work for you also. You'll have to downgrade first, then root, then flash a pre-rooted OTA build. That'll put you back to where you are now, but with root access.
I've just rooted HTC Desire Z - Android 2.3.3
1. You have to downgrade firmware 2.x to 1.3.4 ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905261)
2. And then following these instruction in ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=HTC_Vision#Rooting_the_Vision_.28G2.2FDZ.29_and_DHD )
3. Done
have any of you guys tried the gingerbreak?
from what i read its able to root any gingerbread device.
i cant post links as this is my second post. but im sure if you google it, you should find it.
i read under the techofweb result.
not sure if it works, i never tried it. Rooting my HTC desire Z voids my warranty
but if you guys out there try it, let me know if its successful.
thanks in advance.

What we're actually doing now to root is this :
2.3.4, temp rooting 2.3.4, downgrade to OTA 2.1, root that, flash new ROM.
You forgot the last step *PROFIT!* lol all kidding aside for the one who asked the pre-rooted ota is in the development section. don't forget to flash recovery and get titanium backup and all that good stuff first...well second after temproot if you go that method. DO NOT USE VISIONARY!
Also remember to do a nandroid backup of your 2.1 ROM if for some reason you want to go back to stock, or sending your phone in for warranty.

Hello everyone, I am using HTC-Desire Z with the android version 2.3.3
I really want to upgrade my phone to ICS. In case of doing the root, i want to know that, if i root my phone will it downgrade first to the Froyo??? If it will then can i upgrade to the ICS using the custom ROM process???
If anyone knows or understands my problems please provide me a solution and that will be appreciated..
Thank You

Yes search the threads and follow the wiki. The only safe way to root is to downgrade first using the method outlined in the wiki. The only way (for now and probably forever) to get ics on a desire z or g2 is to root

Can someone walk me through for the steps of successfully rooting my desire z ?
Thanks

There are so many easy places to find this information here if you just look around. Specifically the Android Development sub forum.
Cyanogenmod wiki for rooting the HTC Desire Z
The XDA wiki for rooting the HTC Vision/Desire Z
Also make sure you do not use the Visionary to do root as it has a high brick risk and don't install Clockworkmod version 5 as that has issues. Stick with Clockworkmod 3.0.2.4.
Another thing ... I suggest before you root your device, you read through a lot of the forum threads for your device so you have a better understanding of what your doing. I apologize if I'm treating you with kid gloves, but your question makes me wonder.
That guide is for 1.72 firmware though I am running on 2.42.666.8. How would I go about downgrading it?
EDIT: Also, what can you do with a rooted phone, I know you can do a lot just not the specifics.
Check the Development forum, there is a guide there for downgrading gingerbread OTA's

I was unaware you're phone had a later firmware on it. Yes, as you said, "can do a lot" with a rooted phone. For example you can install a custom kernel and overclock it to speed up the phone. You can install the latest version of Android on it so you know it's always up to date. I can't really think of anymore off the top of my head, but there you go. Rooting pretty much keeps your options open with your phone I guess.
So I've recently gotten my Desire Z rooted, and I'm trying to install a custom ROM.
However Clockwork keeps telling me that my phone is not rooted, ("You must root your phone for ROM Manager to function. Superuser was not found at "/system/bin/su" or "/system/xbin/su"".
Even so my phone has SU installed as well as busybox. How do I need to go about fixing this?
Thank you for any help!
first of all what method did you follow to gain root?
also do any other rooted apps work? setcpu, titanium, adfree ?
I used the HTCdev method to unlock my bootloader then I used the Fre3vo exploit and pushed the superuser and busybox apks and installed them both.
Titanium does not work either.
I believe in order to get the su to work you have to actually flash it as a .zip the first time. Also, do you have s.off? That htcdev.com method is horse crap if you ask me, though it will get you unlocked.
Sent from my HTC Vision using xda premium
It managed to get my bootloader unlocked.
But no I don't have S-off. Would having flashed it from a .zip changed anything else?
Also I can flash ClockWorkRecovery without even a little bit of an Issue.
well s-off means no root, follow the wiki, downgrade and then root.
the htc unlocked bootloader is just a stepping stone leading to nowhere
probably the most you will get out of it is confirming your g2 is void of warranty with htc
so follow the wiki, it isnt to hard and you will be much happier than trying to cheat your way into root!
good luck!
Alright, well thanks for your help fellas!
no problem, just make sure you read the wiki first and understand it, if not search the threads and im sure someone has had the same question. but over all it takes from 30min for the experienced up to 2hrs if your lost the whole time. leave the appropriate amount of time and youll be a happy camper soon enough!

follow this guide, since you have "the official HTC unlocked bootloader" which as i said before is almost worthless (not complaining to you but to htc) i believe you need to do a few things first before you can downgrade, you need to be at froyo for this method to work, dont have time to search for you right now but im sure you'll find the appropriate steps to take if you search a little
HTC Unlock only lets you flash ROMs through fastboot. As already mentioned, it doesn't give you root, S-Off, and you can't flash straight from ROM Manager or recovery.
