So I've recently gotten my Desire Z rooted, and I'm trying to install a custom ROM.
However Clockwork keeps telling me that my phone is not rooted, ("You must root your phone for ROM Manager to function. Superuser was not found at "/system/bin/su" or "/system/xbin/su"".
Even so my phone has SU installed as well as busybox. How do I need to go about fixing this?

first of all what method did you follow to gain root?
also do any other rooted apps work? setcpu, titanium, adfree ?
I used the HTCdev method to unlock my bootloader then I used the Fre3vo exploit and pushed the superuser and busybox apks and installed them both.
Titanium does not work either.
I believe in order to get the su to work you have to actually flash it as a .zip the first time. Also, do you have s.off? That htcdev.com method is horse crap if you ask me, though it will get you unlocked.

It managed to get my bootloader unlocked.
But no I don't have S-off. Would having flashed it from a .zip changed anything else?
Also I can flash ClockWorkRecovery without even a little bit of an Issue.
well s-off means no root, follow the wiki, downgrade and then root.
the htc unlocked bootloader is just a stepping stone leading to nowhere
probably the most you will get out of it is confirming your g2 is void of warranty with htc
so follow the wiki, it isnt to hard and you will be much happier than trying to cheat your way into root!

no problem, just make sure you read the wiki first and understand it, if not search the threads and im sure someone has had the same question. but over all it takes from 30min for the experienced up to 2hrs if your lost the whole time. leave the appropriate amount of time and youll be a happy camper soon enough!

This is the thread you need to follow if you have already used htcdev method. You will have to relock bootloader, then downgrade, then root and s.off.
Also, if you have any further problems talk to that nipqer, he is really good.

EDIT: Never mind! Finally got it to work! I now have custom ROMs again! Thanks for all the help!

follow this guide, since you have "the official HTC unlocked bootloader" which as i said before is almost worthless (not complaining to you but to htc) i believe you need to do a few things first before you can downgrade, you need to be at froyo for this method to work, dont have time to search for you right now but im sure you'll find the appropriate steps to take if you search a little
HTC Unlock only lets you flash ROMs through fastboot. As already mentioned, it doesn't give you root, S-Off, and you can't flash straight from ROM Manager or recovery.

it is called Visionary r14 and while its not 1 click it did mine in 2!
load on phone click temproot
also make sure usb debuggin is checked!!
then after it temp roots open up app again and click attempt perm root now
viola! thats all i did and been running roms ever since! hope that helps!
That might also brick your phone... you should get insurance on your phone then its only a 130 dollar brick but seriously use the rage method or use the new real root/sim unlock. Its stickied in the dev section. Its about as easy as it can be.

I've never been excited about one-touch root methods. One small thing goes wrong, a glitch in the program or something and boom, dead phone. At least the other way if I brick it, it's my fault.
I'm practicing adb in preparation for the rooting of my phone, I'm aiming for a late December root.

Sounds sensible to me, I think the rage method is a lot better, at least you're in control over what it's doing and can see every step.

Like shortlived and stevie said just try the rage method its fairly simple. Just take some time to learn how to use adb and then it'll be a breeze. Also adb is almost a necessity when it comes to rooting/modding android phones. Also if u get stuck or confused bout anything there are plenty of useful threads just search lol good luck

Adb is very simple. All you need to know for the rage method is "adb push" if you can open a cmd window on your pc, learn a few dos commands like "cd" and "cd.." then your all set. There are some very good guides to get you set up with adb just check the stickies. And good luck!

Just use visionary r14 to temp root. then look through the overclocking thread and find the GScript method of Overclocking. I permanently rooted my first g2 and then the sd card gave out on me and I sent in it for warranty. Idk if they checked to see if its rooted or not but I haven't been charged. The only issue with perma rooting the g2 is the fact that if you screw up they can see if you've tampered with it and if you've only temp rooted it, from what I understand, the temp root is much safer but you have to root it every time you reset your phone (turning it back on from an off state). small price to pay imo. GL though!
Get over your fear, read over the instructions, and root using rage. It took me a half-hour to root my phone, and that was the first thing I did when I got it.
I think the new easiest way is gfree? I haven't done it because I was already permrooted. It also should unlock your phone (sim, radio, some other thing I don't remember.)

There is a video that walks you thru rooting with VISIONary r14. I followed the video and worked perfectly. Just a note I unistalled my version of VISIONary first then followed there video on temp-rooting first and then onto perm-rooting. I bricked my first G2, got it replaced and was scared to try again, but if followed there videos and worked out perfect, now running CyanogenMod 6.1 rc4 and my phone is super charged. heres the links thanks to dcogen:

SuperCID, SIMUnlock, Radio S-Off is the new Permroot. Its actuallty true permroot. Those of you who think your permrooted technically arent. You just have a "hacked" Hboot. Doing the gfree method allows you to
1: Flash pc10img (stock rom) without the whole hex editing process and also flash roms from another carrier.
2: Your sim is unlocked (maybe wont matter for some of you but its nice to have for travel)
3: S-off, need I say more.
When flashing back to stock you also keep S-Off and do not lose it via gfree and from what I'm hearing soon there will be a way to revert back to S-On via gfree. Just incase we need to send our phones back in for any reason. Cant leave any trail of evidence.

Sorry that's not right. SuperCID/SIM Unlock/Radio S-OFF doesn't have anything to do with perm root. Yes, this is the new way of totally unlocking your phone, but you can be full perm rooted and still have radio S-ON.
Seems to be that some people use the term "permanent root" to refer to a full unlock rather than just the rooting ability itself (i.e. run as the root user).
I think what you means to say is that those you who think you are S-OFF without running gfree technically aren't, you've got an engineering hboot which makes it look like S-OFF.

It may come with the latest ROM but I more suspect that it will come with the original (shipped) ROM and immediately receive the OTA update. The good news is that there are no issues rooting even if you have the OTA applied (I think some of the rooting guides assume you do) so I would go ahead and apply the OTA if prompted. This is different than the Desire Z where the latest updates can make rooting more complicated.
The most widely recommended method of obtaining permanent root is the "gfree" method, it will permanently root your phone and at the same time will SIM unlock it as well as set the CID so you could load whatever carrier ROM you might want to.
The only issue most people seem to have with using the gfree method is getting ADB up and running and talking to your G2. Using ADB isn't (as far as I know) strictly necessary to make gfree work but it's easiest and all the guides (that I've seen) have you use ADB.

Could you please stop telling people to use the VISIONary method!? That method has a risk of putting the user's phone into a boot loop! Please know you what your talking about before attempting to help some one, it can make the difference of bricking a phone and rooting a phone. Rage and GFree DOES NOT have a risk of putting your phone in a boot loop. Out of all the people that have messed up their phone, EVERY ONE of them that I have seen has used the VISIONary method. I'm not trying to be mean, but please be more careful when giving advice. I know your just trying to help, and I respect you for that but please do no tell some one to do the VISIONary method.

Verizon is pushing out OTA updates to install Android 2.3. I'd like to downgrade to Android 2.2, and prevent the OTA from happening in the future. Is there a way to do this?

I, too, was unfortunate enough to receive the Gingerbread OTA update with no confirmation or anything. The funny thing is that I clicked cancel after it downloaded it, which did nothing. What's even more funny is that this is replacing a previous Droid Incredible 2 which already had S-OFF and CM7.

it works, but its via adb only. Afterwards, using Revolutionary you can get s-off. The instructions are for downgrading to get s-off. Basically reverting back to .97 bootloader.

It does work, I used this method to downgrade today, i was able to gain s-off and flash cyanogenmod after. It isn't the easiest method for novices though. But the instructions are pretty clear. I had problems running the automated script included (i was in debian linux, so i cant speak for the windows script). However when I executed the commands in the script manually, everything worked . I would imagine that someone will package this method up nicely before too long...

I just got my DZ back from HTC, and unfortunately they upgraded my firmware to 2.3. I took a look on the instructions on downgrading 2.3 to 1.xx, and it looks quite complicated and risky.
I know that HTC has released unlocking tool for DZ and I wonder if it is safer to use that. Anyone tried it before?
General opinion is that HTC's unlock tool is rubbish because (a) it is very restrictive and doesn 't really unlock properly, and (b) it officially voids your warranty.
The procedure in the Wiki is quite safe if you follow it properly. Read it carefully and come back and ask questions, before you try it, if there's anything you are not clear on. There are plenty of people here who can help you.

The thing is, that if you unlocked your boot loaders via htcdev, you will be able to get perm root and custom rom, BUT you will still have s-on. So apps like rom manager or boot manager won't work properly.
I recommend the wiki way too.

I had the same thought as you, tried HTC's unlocking method and could never get it done. Then I tried the wiki's instruction, downgraded, rooted and installed ICS all in about an hour.
Disclaimer: I am a noob, this is the second time I root a phone (first time was my SGS S a year ago).

+1 to all of this.
HTC Unlock does not give you S-Off, does not give you root, and you can only flash from ADB. Just do the Wiki method, and get real control of your phone.
I think you shouldn't use the htc tool....not the greatest result but lost your garanty!

Using the HTC tool is like sending a registered letter to HTC declaring you just voided your warranty. Stick to the wiki, IMHO!

You did right with the wiki. If for any reason something went horribly wrong with a flash and you still had S-On bootloader, such as via htcdev unlock, you could have been screeeewed. S-Off makes your phone virtually bomb-proof, seriously it takes effort hard bricking a G2/DZ that's S-Off

Just got an incredible tonight, seem to be getting hung up in the root process. I'm following instructions here to root 2.3.4 and when I run unrevoked 2.33 it "fails to flash recovery image." I've installed the modified drivers and usb debugging etc is enabled. Is there a better root method, or way to downgrade without rooting? This is my first time on HTC so bear with me.
edit: About half way through the htcdev method, seems to be good. Stumbled on it right after I posted this of course..

You should be using unrevoked 3.22, not 2.33.
Yeah I had the same issue with that... when your running 2.3.4 it is mainly the version of unrEVOked you use (if you follow the directions)found that out after the 5th version of the program. Also do not use z4root it never works. But yeah definitely make sure you have the right version compatible with your build of gingerbread/froyo
