Easiest Way To Root ? - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a DHD with 1.72.405.3 unlocked and unbranded.
What is the easiest way to Downgrade and Root my phone ?
& how much of a chance is there that i brick my phone ?
I've seen a couple of threads about Rooting , i just don't know which one to use.

I have to disagree on that, nobody has bricked a desire hd yet. Chances of bricking are very low if you use my tools, because my tools check if everything is ok before doing anything.

Thanks for the info
What's the difference between Root and S-Off ?

Root is a permission to do stuff in the current ROM, S-OFF is a setting deeper down in the device that for example sets the device's internal memory to read/write state instead of read only. Basically it allows you to flash stuff.

Thanks for the reply again, i think i'll stick with Rooting my phone so i can use some apps i couldn't use before.
I might S-OFF later on when i want to flash some custom roms

Actually there is no chance to brick your device with just rooting it...

Visionary + Has never, at least to my knowledge broken a phone; the only risk to damage of the phone is when flashing, and if you have used jkoljo's S-OFF tool, you can always get access to the bootloader, and therefore access clockworkmod, or reset the phone using the PGD128.zip (or whatever that is called, I cant remember the exact name) Happy flashing

I have to agree with you.. Your tool have help me in my journey to root and s-off.. But still have to follow your instruction, so that i won't do anything weird with my phone..

Sorry for all the noob questions, but if i Root and S-Off my phone how easy would it be to go back to stock unrooted ?

Follow this...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905003
Be careful and read the instructions a few times.
Rooting shouldn't brick your dhd...flashing the radio is the most common way of bricking it (a know of a coupl eof dudes who glanced at the instructions and proceeded to brick them)
BUT there are some v good guides here and on youtube...

Ps...
And have fun!!!!!!!!

Noob question about HBOOT number

Hi Guys,
I'm about to try rooting my HTC and just want a question answered.
At the start of the 'noob proof how to' post on how to root the HTC Desire it says you cant do it unless the HBOOT number is 93 or lower, well mine is 93.0001.
Can I do it or will I risk 'Bricking' my phone??
Thanks
Fenny101
Ps. What does bricking mean??
When you say that you want root your phone, you want to S-Off it ?

Bricking means phone becomes totally unresponsive.
Don't worry about it though, unless you are ridiculously unlucky, or can't follow instructions at all it won't happen to you!
Hboot 93.0001 is fine, but I recommended using unrevoked for the root, then alpharev for s-off. (full root, security flag disabled).
http://unrevoked.com/
http://alpharev.nl/
Ok cheers Stringer..
so that unrevoke thing is software right? How do I use it?
Sorry if i'm being slow by the way I am completely new to this whole thing

No worried, we are all new sometime!
Yes it's a software utility, download it off the site and run like any program. Really is one click!
For alpharev, its a boot CD, so you download the ISO, copy to CD, then boot from that and it does its stuff...

It is quite difficult to root desire HD. It would be very nice if someone who knows how to do it, to make a CLEAR post from A-z. First downgrade? S-off? Adb errors? Gold card? It's a LOT of stuff to read out there about how to do it right but since there are many changes and updates since the first rooted phone, it would be nice if someone will do this from scratch.
Thanks in advance.

its not difficult either,
1. install visionary+ from android market.
enable debugging from settings> application >development.
on visionary press TEMP ROOT after it done (sometimes took 2 or more tries)
then press PERM root.
there u go u have permanent root htc desire hd (works only with 1.32.405 ver)

I suggest that you just do some reading and learn it. I have spent dozens of hours working on my guides and tools, and 99% of the people who are capable of reading, succeed in the process.
The guides cannot become any easier. Downgrade is your first step, follow the thread. Then there is a link to Radio S-OFF tool in the end of downgrade guide. Follow that link.. You get the point.
In short what you need to do...

I kinda understand where this guy is coming from. I'm fully confident on the actual root process, my problem lies in actual downgrading. Fair play it will take an idiots guide to get me rooted on my hd. Just wished it was as simple as my G1 was.
I'm aware of needing an sdk file to downgrade, but the guides here don't reflect on that.
In no way is my post meant to be or sound disrespectful in anyway. You guys here do an amazing job, you really do and I (as many others) here appreciate it 100%.
My reasons for root are solely selfish. I want root to allow for use of cachemate louder volume hack and hopefully better battery life.
In my G1 days I had to flash my fone like a whore flashes her pants, but that was just to keep he phone usable.

Thank you audiavant for more specific instructions.
Anyway last day I was stuck when trying to downgrade. I have HTC sync but not the desire sdk and maybe because of that, Adb was not working. I'll try again this evening, hopefully don't get a brick after that

yes, you are required to downgrade as only 1.34 is rootable at the moment.
you'll get 15 different opinions regarding whether or not visionary is safe, but the general consensus is that it is okay to use to obtain temp root, but very risky to try and perma-root with it.
oke i started downgrading but i'm getting an error "Main version is older update failed" what did i do wrong?
EDIT: Nvm what i did wrong was the usb setting it should be Charge only
..
so did you get it to work just fine after downgrading ?
Using visionary is harmless. I constantly use it to root and unroot my g2. The method you may have come across could be slightly different than what I read so I would say compare similar facts between the two. I got my rooting info from here: http://theunlockr.com/2010/10/20/how-to-root-the-t-mobile-g2-htc-vision-visionary-method/ . Theunlockr has video tutorials posted as well as text tutorial. So using this method should help majorly.

[Q] Flashing Cyanogenmod 7 to my DHD, is my research correct?

Basically what it says in the title. I have a Desire HD with Android 2.3.5 installed, and I want to flash Cyanogenmod 7.1 (With google apps) to it. I've had a good look at all the resources available and I think I know what I need to do, I'm a little apprehensive though as I'm new to this so would somebody mind checking the resources I have found to see if I have the right steps?
First of all I've checked in About Phone -> Software Information and found that my Software Number is 3.12.405.1. So from what I've read this means I'll have to downgrade my firmware before I can root.
That lead me to this guide: Here
If I follow that guide carefully as well as this one here, I will end up with a phone that has firmware 1.32, is rooted, has Radio S-OFF and also has clockworkmod recovery installed.
From there, I can then follow this guide here to install the latest version of Cyanogenmod either using Recovery, or the ROM manager. Simple, right?
Does this sound about right? Or am I missing something incredibly obvious that will break my phone, or make life a lot easier?
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!
Sounds good to me although you could try this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=952352
One click root and s-off once you follow everything and have the right setup to run the tool. Very easy and quick.

Thanks! That looks good, although I'm not very confident about this little warning.
Doing this WILL severely degrade bootloader performance on Inspires (and likely DHDs) and causes issues trying to install RUUs. In other words, it WILL jam you up. (Note: Issue now confirmed on later DHDs - ignore at your own risk).

Am I reading this correctly, following this method WILL degrade my bootloader performance? Or will that only happen if I perform the hack incorrectly?
You are reading it wrong. What has happens especially with us inspire users(American dhd) is that if your phone was shipped with gb, installing the Eng bootloader(Eng soff) causes issues. Makes the phone take 15 min to boot. Its possible to fix but its a long pita. I only seen a couple people with dhd have this issue so and others not.
Regular soff is all you need, just you can't use fastboot to flash say radios, its done in a different way

Just follow these his guide and video, works perfectly. www.xda-developers.com/android/how-to-root-the-htc-desire-hd/
The only difference is that after instead of flashing the rom suggested you can flash cm 7.1 www.download.cyanogenmod.com/?type=stable&device=ace
No risks no problems with bootloader.

Root DHD

Hey everybody,
I am here to ask the much dreaded question. How can I root my DHD? I don't really want to use AAHK and downgrade my firmware, I need a 2.3.5 root please. By the way I have woven through many forums, so none of those "search before you ask" posts. After all, forums are for asking questions. Many thanks
P.S I am a new member, so bear with me

Forums are for asking new questions, but they are not for asking questions that have been asked and answered many times previously, like this one. With that said, I can believe that you have at least searched a bit and just not found what you're looking for, since the only other solution is significantly less popular (for good reason). So: you can use HTCDEV to unlock the bootloader. It give you fewer ROM options (you can only flash ROMs intended for your phone, not ported ROMs), and you need to flash the boot.img from your computer each time you flash a ROM. (Those restrictions are the reasons why HTCDEV is less popular than AAHK; I usually recommend AAHK.) Why don't you want to downgrade using AAHK?
first try this software http://www.unlockroot.com/ if it didnt work then use aahk

There is no way to gain S-OFF and root without downgrading. That is why the Hack Kit does that. SuperOneClick, unlockroot and other stuff wont work in your device.
The other choice is to unlock the bootloader as bananagranola said, but that wont give you total control of your device nor root.
What you can do, is after running the Hack Kit, flash a 2.3.5 custom rom that you like, but that is of course your call.

Sadly, it will wipe your data during the downgrade process. There seems to be no way around it
But aahk is quite save and will tell you before it destroys any data.

The only chance that I see, is that run zergrush or tacoroot to gain temp root and then back up your stuff, then downgrade and root.

Finaly a question that I need an answer to... Ok, I actually want to use the aahk, but my waranty is still valid so I wish to make a backup of my stock ROM so I could unROOT if something goes wrong in the future... Now, the aahk will downgrade my phone and thous not give me a chance to backup mu current ROM... Is there any way I could back it up somehow? I think that that is the way to go with the original question if you already want the stock ROM...
