Noob question about HBOOT number - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi Guys,
I'm about to try rooting my HTC and just want a question answered.
At the start of the 'noob proof how to' post on how to root the HTC Desire it says you cant do it unless the HBOOT number is 93 or lower, well mine is 93.0001.
Can I do it or will I risk 'Bricking' my phone??
Thanks
Fenny101
Ps. What does bricking mean??

When you say that you want root your phone, you want to S-Off it ?

Bricking means phone becomes totally unresponsive.
Don't worry about it though, unless you are ridiculously unlucky, or can't follow instructions at all it won't happen to you!
Hboot 93.0001 is fine, but I recommended using unrevoked for the root, then alpharev for s-off. (full root, security flag disabled).
http://unrevoked.com/
http://alpharev.nl/

Ok cheers Stringer..
so that unrevoke thing is software right? How do I use it?
Sorry if i'm being slow by the way I am completely new to this whole thing

No worried, we are all new sometime!
Yes it's a software utility, download it off the site and run like any program. Really is one click!
For alpharev, its a boot CD, so you download the ISO, copy to CD, then boot from that and it does its stuff...

[Q] easiest way to s-off? unrevoked?

what about uk desires? (GSM?) will it do it for our phones too, or is it only the iso method?

No it won't. for GSM unrevoked will root but not S-off. to S-off use AlphaRev. There are also some tutorials on this.
Make sure you actually know what your about to do and what the risks are.
thanks guys.
i know what the risks are (potentially fubarring my phone)
will do the vbox meth tomoz
ta all
Sorry jumped the gun ... I will hang my head in shame only read the post and forgot about the title s off is real easy to do just burn the .iso with Nero and takes like 5 mins to complete the soff its as easy as one 2 , 3

Just burn the cd and do it the normal way. Much easier and lots less to go wrong. It's as easy as putting the cd in and rebooting your pc in most cases.
tried the vbox way and it was fiddly. hooked up a dvd writer to my NC10 netbook and booted off the CD.
took about 3 mins i think.
now, i know there's something in the oxygen rom that's only available with s-off, anyone want to make a short (or long) list of things we can now do?
to be honest, i just wanted to get rid of that all white htc splash tbh
Hi, time progressed.... is there any noob/the easiest way at this moment to gain S-OFF???
Any one click program etc....?
Found HTC Supertool v3, but not tried this and not sure that is functional on WFS.
THX for your reply!

Depending on hboot of your device, 0.93 and 1.02 work with revolutionary, older are compatible with unrevoked and alpharev.

1. This is in the wrong section.
2. There are several threads about this already. No need to start a new one.
3. If you don't have s-off anymore it means you didn't have radio s-off and now you are stuck. You will not have root again.
Have a nice day.
Hello everyone and thanks for the replies. then in the future will be out a way to make the root in this version?thanks.

Most likely it will at some point in the future. If at all possible that is (insert scared shudder here).
The new devices rolling off the assembly line somewhere will all have the latest ROM and imho there are just too many useful things that require root.
If HTC, on the other hand, has succeeded in closing this ROM so tight that are no holes left to exploit I personally think that it will reflect negatively on their sales. Fat lot of good that will do us, I know.

Easiest Way To Root ?

I have a DHD with 1.72.405.3 unlocked and unbranded.
What is the easiest way to Downgrade and Root my phone ?
& how much of a chance is there that i brick my phone ?
I've seen a couple of threads about Rooting , i just don't know which one to use.
Try reading here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905003

I have to disagree on that, nobody has bricked a desire hd yet. Chances of bricking are very low if you use my tools, because my tools check if everything is ok before doing anything.

What's the difference between Root and S-Off ?
Root is a permission to do stuff in the current ROM, S-OFF is a setting deeper down in the device that for example sets the device's internal memory to read/write state instead of read only. Basically it allows you to flash stuff.

Thanks for the reply again, i think i'll stick with Rooting my phone so i can use some apps i couldn't use before.
I might S-OFF later on when i want to flash some custom roms
Actually there is no chance to brick your device with just rooting it...
Visionary + Has never, at least to my knowledge broken a phone; the only risk to damage of the phone is when flashing, and if you have used jkoljo's S-OFF tool, you can always get access to the bootloader, and therefore access clockworkmod, or reset the phone using the PGD128.zip (or whatever that is called, I cant remember the exact name) Happy flashing

I have to agree with you.. Your tool have help me in my journey to root and s-off.. But still have to follow your instruction, so that i won't do anything weird with my phone..
Sorry for all the noob questions, but if i Root and S-Off my phone how easy would it be to go back to stock unrooted ?
Follow this...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905003
Be careful and read the instructions a few times.
Rooting shouldn't brick your dhd...flashing the radio is the most common way of bricking it (a know of a coupl eof dudes who glanced at the instructions and proceeded to brick them)
BUT there are some v good guides here and on youtube...
Ps...
And have fun!!!!!!!!

In a word, Yes.
Another word or two , it is highly recommended you [should] do a FULL-WIPE, if installing a diffident Rom from the one you are using.

Change ENG S-OFF to S-OFF?

Hi Guys!
I bought a used DZ for my Girfriend.
It has Eng-Off and CWM installed already.
I read here in the forum that it would be "cleaner" to have S-Off instead of Eng-Off? Is this correct?
if yes, how can i do it? Can i just click on S-Off in AMT?
Thank you in advanced, regards, Chris

ENG is referring to the HBOOT (there's no such thing as ENG-OFF); you can return to the standard HBOOT while keeping S-OFF (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=999796) though, keeping the ENG HBOOT won't hurt anything.

Hello!
Thank your for the answer, but sorry for being anoying.
XDA is always over the top and I'm flashing my HD2 since a half year, but sometimes some basics are ahrd to understand, so please let me asksome more questions:
1. Eng-Off: Ok, so i will let her device as it is. I flashed yesterday the virtuous sense 3.0 rom, she is very satisfied with it
I will get my brand new DZ on Monday, so am I with the following right?
2. If i have a software higher than 1.34 I have to connect it to AMT, click on "Downgrade ROM" and then put the 1.34 on the SD-Card, Boot in Hboot and the phone will ask to install it, right?
3. When done this, i can go back to AMT and click s-off, super-cid, perm root, install recovery and let it work?
4. When this is done, i can go into hboot -> recovery and can flash the rom i want to?
If we have to send one back to HTC for warranty how can i get it back to stock the easiest way?
Only found this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=HTC_Vision#Returning_to_Stock
But this looks very complicated to me, isn't there a easier way?
Thank you very much for answering my questions

Glad I could help.
As far as #2-4, I'm not sure what AMT is so, I can't say; I would however recommend using the guide in the Wiki for all of those steps. The guide is always the most up to date and, while the steps seem complicated, they really aren't (I rooted my G2 following the guide while drinking the day root was first achieved), just be sure to check your typing before sending the commands and all will be fine.
