I picked up an HTC Desire Z the other day, and I was wondering if I could root it, or if I should downgrade. I found a lot of downgrade tutorials, but they were all for 1.72, and I'm afraid none of them will work.

Downgrade. Read the guide here. Your phone needs to be downgraded from 1.84 to 1.34.405. This will allow you to permanently root the phone.
Any official ROM above 1.34 is not currently rootable, and needs to be downgraded to 1.34 to root. The process for 1.84 has been confirmed by users here, to be the same as for 1.72. If you want a more updated ROM version after root, you can flash the Virtuous ROM, which is based on 1.85, but pre-rooted.

Okay so i recently got a HTC desire and i tried to root it and failed, so i did some research and found that thanks to the 2.2 OTA it has made the phone unrootable at the moment, Hboot is 0.93 and to downgrade hboot it has to be 0.92. Can somebody point me in the right direction as i am going crazy and going in circles here.
Thanks
stu
It has nothing to do with hboot. You can follow the same guide to downgrade Anrdoid and root the phone, but if you have an SLCD screen you'll have the same problem with the screen breaking in the process.
No when i went to downgrade hboot it told me it was failed....Dude
Then your software version must be higher than stock froyo, in which case it's not possible to root in any way at the moment.

Isnt there a way i can downgrade to 2.1 instead and then root?
Nope. The downgrade works on any software version up to 2.09.405.8 but nothing higher. You can't override that check without rooting, and you can't root without downgrading.
Ahhhhh f**k!!!! >.<
Hi
I've seen all the answers in this forum, but all of them seem to be a bit old. So am wondering, does Visionary still require the Firmware to be less than 1.7xxxx? Or has it been updated?
I'm running 1.75.161.2 CL301245 release-keys on a Vodafone(UK) Desire HD and am wondering whether I need to downgrade.
Hi there, If you are running FW 1.7+ you will need to downgrade here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905003 first of all to v1.36 then run the visionary tool.
If you want to install custom roms you will need radio s-off and eng s-off in addition to this from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=841076.
Its all very straight forward even if you are new to rooting (like I was lol)

Yes, there appears little appetite (or need) to find a new exploit to gain root, when later firmwares are , relatively, easily downgradable. So yes you will need to downgrade to attain root

Thnx.
So no way to run rooted 1.72 F/W, eh?
If I downgrade, can I upgrade to 1.72 without losing root?
My concern is that all the custom ROMs have some reported issue. The most promising seems to be Revolution 3, but even that has a reported GPS problem.
You can use Raidroid stockify series ROM, you can install it like a custom ROM, but it is just rooted stock ROM. It has 1.72 version.
Please keep in mind that all people know is how to complain in ROM threads. Let's take Revolution HD for example, it has tens of thousands of users, and then there are maybe ten people a day who say that they have some serious problem. What are the chances that they have caused the problem themselves? Exactly..
I have not experienced any big issues with the ROMs I have tried, except the Gingerbread leak, which is obviously just a leak, and therefore you cannot expect it to be perfect.
Hi,
I have a stock DHD, which has 2.2 via OTA.
I have gone through a lot of forums articles here on xda but am still not sure about the below points:
1) I know that Visionary would not work on my phone unless i downgrade. But I am confused, wouldn't downgrading remove all the fixes and enhancements which came in 2.2.1 over 2.1 android??
2) Is there any other clean and tested way to root my phone apart from Visionary, which does not need me to downgrade?
3) Apart from the Visionary way, is there any existing way to temproot my phone?
You're downgrading firmware to a rootable one, you're not going back to 2.1, basically you're still on froyo 2.2. Basically you can't root without downgrading, there is no other way.
If you're planning on running custom roms then you can just flash roms with 2.3 or 2.2.1

Yes, downgrading will put you back to software version 1.32, but if you have software version 1.72 or above you will not be able to get root access to your phone.
As soon as you have downgraded, gained permanent root, and optionally gained s-off or eng s-off you will be able to install custom roms of your choice with the newest leaked softare ex Gingerbread.
By my knowledge its no other way to root your DHD, but to follow the very good treads in the developer section.
But the downgrade bit is only a temporary state that you need to do before you install a custom ROM with all the newest features.
But then this means, the there would be no way to keep a backup(nandorid) etc. of my stock/untouched state
If something goes wrong, I would be without a backup of my undisturbed original state.
As far as I know you need temproot to downgrade, but that is in basic shell so you're still not able to make a nandroid backup...
hey guys, i still got the "RUU_Ace_HTC_WWE_1.32.405.6_Radio_12.28b.60.140e_26.03.02.26_M_release_155891_signed" on my computer, isn´t that the easiest way to downgrade a htc desire hd?
At the moment it´s:
2.2.1
Kernel 2.6.32.21
softwarenumber:
1.75.111.2
a few months ago i downgraded my dhd with that firmware and rooted it, does this still work with a that newer firmware?
my aim is to put a custom rom on it
ofc u can downgrade with that ruu, there are only downgrade guides in this forum cause it makes more fun with the hard way
you can't root builds higher than 1.32 base
great news, thanks
mmh, i got an id error? any idea? rom updated aborted...
Erroe 131: User ID Error
only follow the downgrade guide!
and you will have no problems

I am tired of watching useless YouTube videos, reading useless comments, and doing it from November until today. My Desire HD is updated, as you all DHD users know, the latest update is the Sense 3.0 update, and now it's a 2.3.5 ver. Android on it. The question is? How can I root it?? I REALLY want to root this phone but I couldn't find a solution for 2.3.5 Desire HDs, just the Froyo ones. Help please! I tried GingerBreak, SuperOneClick. Nothing happens, they run forever and do nothing.
Hey dude.
Did your DHD come with Gingerbread or did you OTA update to it?
If your DHD came with Froyo and you updated to GB, you can factory reset your DHD to take it back to Froyo, then follow the instructions here to downgrade to 1.32 then you can root etc...
Regards.
Greg.
Thank, it came with Froyo as I've bought it when came out.
You can use AAHK (advanced ace hack kit). Search for it on the site. It is updated to root all versions of Android officially released for DHD. No need to this manually as the AAHK does it all on its own in mere minutes. Just make sure you really read what needs to be done before running it. It really is a very simple process. If you get stuck running it, AAHK has an irc support chan so you can ask there or in the thread directly.

Donno if I am missing something but i cant find this AAHK thing, and the factory reset does not downgrade my phone, just removed all my stuff, but still 2.3.5 and sense 3.0. Why is it so complicated...
Use search in xda. Aahk will find the thread.

I found Jkoljo's method easiest. One click root s/off Downgrade , then root. Easy as 1,2,3
Hey dude.
Here is the link to AAHK http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1259821
Hope that helps.

Hi there,
I'm in the same situation as the TS, also with the stock OTA Gingerbread update. So, I understand that a downgrade is unavoidable during the root process right? I understand that AAHK is the way to do it. My question is, will it OTA update back to my current version of GB 2.3.5 with Sense 3.0 after the root and downgrade? Or is OTA updating after this process dangerous or will it undo the root? I'm kinda guessing that flashing the stock 3.12.405.1 ROM manually will undo the root process?
I know there are probably many magnificent ROM's out there that I could flash. But I just don't have the time to identify the differences, try things out and maybe change to another ROM because of bugs. I did do that back in the old WinMo days. Then I would probably flash a new ROM weekly, because there was something faster or more bugfree. Because, even a ROM from the greatest chef has some bugs. I don't have time for that anymore unfortunately, so I'd like to stick with the stock ROM which is good enough for me.
In fact, the only thing I want is root, in order to control permissions from apps (Permissions Denied app) and make better (Titanium) backups. I want nothing more.
Please help me out!

You could OTA update back to 2.3.5, but you would lose root! ;-) Here is a pre rooted stock ROM you can use after rooting: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1382235
Tool to root as mentioned before: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1037315
