Just wondering what kind of people hangs out here.
I see a lot of questions from people who are new to Android as well as a lot of answers by people who seem to be very comfortable with this OS.
If you will, mention specific device that you've used before HTC Desire in your response.
I'm coming from a Touch HD running Winmo 6.1..... It's done a good job, but looking for a more intuitive UI, more apps and functionality (not limited by cupertino ) ...... android seems to tick all those boxes. From what I've seen WinMo 7 doesn't really appeal to me. Hope that app development for android will take off even more quickly.... but that should be the case given the growth of the platform. Waiting for my Desire.....

Blackberry Storm v1...the Desire is sooooo much better....This is my first android device.
Nothing beats the blackberry email service...unless theres a email spam filter for Android out there ?!?.... is there ? (sorry - i should really create a new topic for that question!)
Touch Diamond,wm 6.1
I was using a T-mobile G1 with Android 1.6 before the Desire.
I (am) was using HTC Kaiser, still waiting the Desire.
This waiting time is killing me, hopefully Clove really can deliver next week!
In the meantime (since yesterday), I installed Android 2.1 EClair on my HTC Kaiser. It works very well and I could use it to try and test Android apps
maybe add some more detail to this poll, such as hd2, touch pro 2, diamond 2, hero, g1, nexus one, blackberry storm etc
I have come from a Blackberry 8700 and still have an HP iPAQ Data Messenger for work.
And the missus has an iPhone. Just missing the Symbian I guess
selling my HD2 on eBay today, getting my desire on thursday. had a touch diamond before, and also a touch HD. Time for a change me thinks, Android is up and comng, not so limited either. especially with this site too
I was using a Nokia 5800XM then took on my girlfriends old HTC Tattoo...loved it so much i went for the Desire
HTC HD2. My Desire has opened up a whole new world for me! Would never go back to WM6.5 and very unlikely to go to WM7.
I still have a Samsung i8910 Omnia/Player HD, running Symbian OS S60v5. I'll be getting my Desire sometime next week hopefully.
I cannot wait to enter the Android world!
Only ever had WinMo OS devices, new to Android, got shot of my Orbit and bought a sim free LG Cookie, paired it with an o2 Simplicity sim, and we've been plodding away quite merrily over the past year
...signed up to a few forums, like this one, in anticipation of replacing my humble LG Cookie with the HTC Desire.
Still gleaming nfo and price watching
iPhone 3G.
After a few months it was just usless.
Bye bye Windows!!!
Finally got a high spec hardware Android from HTC to relieve me of the turmoil that is Windows Mobile. I spent years hoping they'd get their act together and create something usable but finally gave up and bought the Desire after using a Hero for a month last year.
Owned the HTC HD2, Touch HD, Touch Pro 2, Vario 2 & 3 so tried but Microsoft just couldn't get it right no matter how much the great Rom cookers such as Dutty and HTC's sense tried to cover the sham up. They did their best but at the end of the day, they were limited by WinMo underlying in there.
Freedom of the Desire is something I'm loving and I ain't looking back!
i also tried the Omnia HD (great hardware, poor OS), the Nokia 5800 (bad allround) and even Samsung Galaxy (shame it wasn't updated from 1.5 android as couldve been ok-ish!)
HTC have always impressed me and have moved forward in leaps and bounds over the last 3 years, coupling that with Android as it's now coming to maturity is a perfect combination.
I'm coming from a SE K800i so this Desire is a bit special !!
Came from HTC hero used for about 5 months before going desire 4 days ago....Can wait for Google's OS to come so that I can get rid of Windows 7 on my PC....
Previously have been using winmo for the last 5 years....
I have an Iphone. Planning to buy the Desire next monday in HK.

The point of the poll was to find out what platform people come from and then they can share what phone they've used before in the post.
---
Now I must say I'm quite surprised to see how many people used platforms other than Android before getting an Desire. I'd say that's great, it means Android android adoption is speeding up.
The smartphones that I've used are listed in my signature. Of course I had many dumbphones before that, but those don't count any more
I think Android and iPhone OS are the only two real competitors in today's market because no other platform will ever catch-up. I might be wrong - you never know... So since I don't like closed nature of iPhone and no choice in hardware, I will stick with Android for a while.
At the Windows Phone 7 Launch yesterday, nine new WP7 devices were announced! That's a lot of phones, and each will eventually have a home here at XDA. But we wanted to see which YOU think we should launch first. Please vote in this poll, and choose up to three.
What about an HTC HD2 subforum for WP7 development on the HD2!
With HTC getting the most support from XDA I'm gonna say it's a HTC device. And since it's usually flagship, then I'm gonna say HD7...My next phone if a Zune HD2 doesn't come out.
it has to be the father of all mobiles ; HD7
nevermind. You can delete this post.
"HD2 Phone 7 Developement"
I present to you our first WP7 forums:
HD7:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=778
7 Mozart:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=779
Focus:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=780
The Samsung Focus will be available well ahead of the HTC devices so I say make the ones available first that will actually have hardware in the wild.
Edit:
I see that it's already there.
why is the omnia 7 grouped in with the focus? they are not the same phone.
and im sure most of those votes will have been for the omnia 7.
I agree. Is there going to be a seperate Omnia 7 forum? The focus doesn't look like the Omnia, more like it's cheaper cousin.
I vote for the Dell Venue Pro as the next forum. Thanks
Well as the HTC HD 7 is one of the few phones with 16 GB memory it gets my vote.
Shame I lost my HD2 thought.
why we can install android on HD2 But we cant do that with HD7
Why would you wanna do that?
If you want Android you are probably gonna buy an Android device in the first place and there are plenty of HTC Android devices.

Because as cotulla says : the hd2 is the king!!:]

Essentially because there's little call for it. The upgrade from Winmo to Android/WP7 was drastic and you could have a high end device on any of the 3 OSes by porting it. If you ported android to the HD7 you would have paid as much for a low-end android device as you would for a mid-high end WP7, it's illogical and stupid and thus there's no call for it.

The main reason is because there is no interest in doing this. And the reason for that is because there isn't anything wrong with WP7 as compared to WinMo. The reason the HD2 got all that dev love was to get away from WinMo on a superphone. WP7, though, happens to be the best mobile OS ever invented. So there just won't be as much or any interest in hacking the HD7 just to put an inferior OS on it.
see all
first must say ThanX 4 all
i want know only why the HD2 have all OS Rom
Y there is android rom for HD7
WP7 VERy Good
i can't say any thing
but only want tho know
I can never understand this response. I had a sdand/wp7 hd2 until it broke, and it was replaced with an hd7. I like wp7 better but android offers more functionality and has a lot of apps/games which are unavailable on wp7.
I loved the option of switching OS' at a click and I can't imagine there aren't many others just like me. The truth is that I spent much more time using android than wp7 when I had the choice of either.
I just bought a galaxy note so ill be saying adieu to wp7 for now but I seriously hope I can dual not wp7 on it.

...if I remember correctly, some guys from xda-developers already came up with an Android version on a WP7 device, just to show that it can be done. However it didn't really work properly....
no one can understand me
sorry about that
i want know how to make an android Rom that run on HD2
and how it work ?!
that's i want know
~Sorry
I created this thread as a way for everyone to get to know each other by name. We're a tight knit group of users in here, and I thought it would be appropriate for us to know each other by name. In the recent weeks, I've noticed an increase in bickering. Experience has taught me that when people know each other on a name to name basis, it creates a more personal atmosphere, where people are less likely to show disrespect to one another.
As your Moderator, my goal in the forums is to create a peaceful atmosphere, where people aren't at each other's throats. It takes away from the true purpose of XDA, and also pushes people away. Let's all work together to improve the overall atmosphere of these forums. After all, we're all here for the same reason; a passion for development, cell phones, and sharing thoughts and ideas.

My name is Tyler. I'm an android vet when it comes to applying mods and roms and whatnot, but when it comes to the guts of the stuff, I'm no good. I tried compiling a build of ICS for my nook color, but even that was beyond me. This is my fifth android device. After a Moto Milestone and Droid 3, this is my first phone with an actual unlocked bootloader that I didn't have to jump through hoops to root (never buying moto again). So that's been nice. I look forward to working with you folks.
Hey guys! My name is Andrew
First Android device here in the Captivate Glide I am learning how to do the little things in Dev and hopefully in time will just continue learning ...
My name's Rohit. The captivate glide is my second android device, behind Desire HD (still have it). I owned an iPod which I messed around with, going to the roots and such. Moving to android gave me more control over the phone than I had with the iPod. I know a little about editing widgets for android as well as figuring out problems which occurs.
the name is Gabriel. Been an Android user since 2010, most of my devices are Samsung so I am comfortable flashing ROMs/Kernels for these devices. I also used Sony Ericsson and HTC devices. My device history below:
Captivate I896 & I897
HTC Desire
Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc
Samsung Infuse 4G I997R
Samsung Galaxy S2 LTE I727R
Samsung Galaxy S Glide I927R
I always stick on stock ROMs. But since I've been tied through developers' work, I have dedicated time to test their ROMs/kernels, use them until I know it is capable of being a daily driver, then go back to stock....

List of Devices:
T-Mobile G1 - SOLD
HTC Merge - SOLD
Galaxy S Glide (Rogers version of the Captivate Glide)

I went from my, like 4 years old, HTC Dream to the Glide(which was so hard to root in comparison to the Glide). Also I like how I'm not the only one who owned a HTC Dream before <3
Hope to see some nice ROMs in the future
Hello from Fabrizio,
Rome - Italy.
Captivate Glide is my first android ever and i'm totally in love with it.
Mike from Toronto, Canada.
Had a Xperia x10 that went from 1.6 to 2.3, and got the Glide after. I still have a want for a physical qwerty. Glide is rooted and running custom OSI Mood ROM from Carpe.
I run a QA dept for a mobile app company and I have a lot of devices at my work (Nexus, Note, HTC's, Xperia's, etc..) and I still like my Glide over all of them.
I don't post much, but read a lot. I find people tend to post too much about nothing.
I also have an Asus Prime.
Looking forward to having ICS come out!

This is my first Android Device. I'm enamored with the flexibility of both the OS and the hardware.
Previous devices of any importance were a WinMo 6.5 LG eXpo and before that a feature phone LG Vu, over the course of the past 7 years. This community is important to me from both a support and a customizing aspect. Thanks!
Hi, I'm Austin... From Fredericktown Mo USA
This is MY second android device (not counting the two of my parents)
I had,

Traded that for iphone 3gs
Traded that for my glide
I also have a Samsung Captivate and Moto Atrix 4g in my family...
I try not to post too much, but if there's a question that I have, or someone has a question that I have the answer to, I'm not shy.

Hi All. My Name Is John and I live in Montreal Canada.
I used to have a Samsung Omnia running Windows 6.1 Phone and before that an Axim X51V. Got Tired of crappy touch screens so I told myself I needed a Physical Keyboard so Hello Glide!
I also work in QA for a Computer company Though I deal in the Microsoft Certification of our drivers.
I installed a Rom on my X51V from XDA many years ago and now with my Glide. I like learning how things work and would like to get into making some Roms as I do have some programming skills but I have never done anything like this. I downloaded the Development kit but I am not sure how to use It I am used to Windows Visual Studio for Work.
Hey there
Hello everyone, the name's Alexander.
The Glide is my first real android device. I previously used hand-me-downs, most notably an HTC Kaiser. Before that an HTC Wizard. On the Wizard I used custom ROMs from XDA, and on the Kaiser I was able to run Android thanks to the great work of the developers here!
I have a background in communication & multimedia design, and have been a bit of a whiz-kid for as long as I can remember. I don't know anything solid about the nuts and bolts of Android specifically, and consider myself much more a tinkerer and designer rather than any kind of developer. So all I can offer are tips and suggestions on making the user experience better through theming, widgets, and so on. On the technical side I can hold my own, but generally with Android consider what I say as "good guesses" unless otherwise stated!
I can, however, really understand the excitement AND frustration that go along with any development-process. In part due to my own experience, but also second-hand as many of my friends are computer engineers.
I hope to be of some help to the lovely folks here at XDA!
Hi, Salaam, my name is Muzammil, living in Ajman, United Arab Emirates.
Samsung Captivate Glide is my first Android device, also bought the Galaxy S II, but that's mom's phone.
Have pretty much single handedly maintained this phone's Wikipedia article, with photos and text. If anyone wants to make it better, please contribute

Hello, This is Vinay, from Bangalore - India.
Captivate Glide is my first Android Phone and very happy with the device from past 6 months.
I am basically an Mechanical Engineer. I am not into programming and writing codes.
Am ready to try and feedback on the Mods/kernels/Roms that the Developers are ready to offer to the XDA Community.
I can understand the work, time and patience that the ppl put across in any development process. Appreciate the work guys!!
Heavily try different App's widgets available in the market.
I can support in general usage issues and suggestions.
Always happy to learn and share.
Hey guys, Paul from London here.
Had my AT&T branded Captivate Glide for a few weeks now. Really like it lots, although I'm itching for some ICS action, but have so far managed to hold out from rooting and flashing it just yet due to the possible official upgrade
Its my third Android device my last being a Motorola Milestone that I had overclocked and flashed a few ROMs on. Ended up running CM7 in the end which I was pleased with, although the battery life left me wanting.
Backflip anyone?
Harry from NJ here. Upgraded to Cappy Glide from the Motorola Backflip running CM7. The Backflip had a great keyboard but was was slow and old (like me!).
Anyone else had a Backflip?
What's a good starter guide to android programming? :cyclops:
i would like to get deeper into androids, other than what i do now (unlocking installing rom, All that bs does not take a genius) if someone is willing to teach me or let me take part in a program with them, message me. I'm asking here in xda cause if you're going to find anything about android platforms, developing, debugging, customization, unlocking everything, i'll find it here. You guys here got it. Never have i been so impressed as I am with xda and the crews.

I suppose you start here:

............
Pointless post here in the Galaxy Nexus subforums.
There's an Android specific forum with suitable subforuns here at XDA.
Once again:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=564
And it's full of developpers!
Guess what! There's even a subforum called "Android Software Development" in there. And inside that subforum, guess again! There's a pinned thread called "[Guide]Complete Android ROM development and essential tutorials".
