New kernel - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Any help on the best/correct way to flash a new kernel ?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA Premium App

Before I flash ANY kernel, I always go into recovery and wipe cache, dalvik cache and battery stats. Afterwards, I flash the kernel and reboot.

Same as doug. Battery stats is optional. If you look around you'll see that some versions of clockwork don't wipe properly. I'd suggest using Amon-Ra instead and just like flashing a ROM wipe 2 or more times just to be sure you get a clean wipe.

Ty both. I was just flashing and battery life was the worst. I'll try if now.

You'll see that people generally agree the first day or two battery life will not be so good with a new kernel.

I make sure my battery is 100% first too before wiping battery stats, then give it at least a few days of charging and draining to better judge what the actual battery life is like.

[Q] Never have to calibrate battery?

You can wipe battery stats from a file, I just don't remember what it is. My question is if I want to switch to a new rom, can I backup and restore it and not have to calibrate my battery?

From my understanding, what youre saying is that you have a current rom now. And if you back that up, flash to a new rom, and then go back to the rom you backed up do you still have to calibrate?
I believe your battery stats are saved when you back up, so I doubt you do, but for best results calibrate it .. especially because your phone dies different every day because you use it differently, so once a month, even with the same rom wouldnt hurt to calibrate.
There is an app called "Battery Calibration" by Ne'Ma that does exactly that. Its free. You have phone plugged in charging and when phone gets to 100%, you press it and it wipes the stats from the file

Or wipe battery stats in cwm.

Wipe battery stats from clockwork then recharge to max then turn on phone

No, lets say I'm already calibrated. If you switch to a new rom, the stats are wiped, right? If that's so, couldn't "/data/system/batterystats.bin" be backup up before flashing a new rom, and restored after flashing it so you don't have to re calibrate the battery?

[Q] Flashing to another ICS

So I installed Blazers ICS ROM and foudnd he battery life is pretty bad (discharging while the phone plugged in USB) So I think I decided to switch over to Blu Kubans ROM. Anything special I need to do other than Calks format all and flash?
No

use the wipe twice. That's what I do. Kuban is a kick ads rom
Make sure you are using Agat's recovery or you may end up getting a new phone

Yes I'd recommend that also. it's considered a safe recovery.
ok, on Agat's recovery, I think it came with my blazer rom. Looks like a crest in the bg I think. Also, on a somewhat unrelated issue, if I used better battery stats and find that power management service is keeping my phone from deep sleep, is that as easy as an uninstall or freeze in titanium backup or would I have to manually patch the ROM?

[Q] How to use Greenify and Better Battery Stats

Hey guys, need a little help. I've been suffering from bad battery life. I've used Greenify to hibernate some apps but it doesn't seem to help anything. I have Better Battery stats installed but don't know how to read it to see what is using most of my battery. I'm on wicked... Don't know if that helps.
I'm coming to the community for help, if anyone has any suggestions or how to read the better battery stats app... Just let me know

There's nothing u can do but wait until the phone becomes familiar with the battery, mine as well died within 5 hours or less I hated it but then I just ignored it nd let it be and we'll I've had this phone for about two weeks nd my average battery life is a day and 2 hours and I'm using wicked as well so just let it settle down plus if you restored apps from the stock rom then u probably want to do a full wipe and start all over again without restoring any apps because the back up u have has the bloat from the stock rom so it eats your battery pretty fast that's wt I did and it fixed it by Givin me two extra hours and also download gsam battery monitor and checks was using a lot of battery...

Then that must be the problem.. Like I said on the previous post, restoring apps from a stock rom could also bring lots of bloat and will eat up your battery so just do a full wipe and there's an update for wicked now so either ways u still have to do a full wipe and don't restore your apps or anything and the rom will be ready to go as well as your battery, I'm sorry but there's no other way specially when you have all Ur apps to your own liking but you have to start clean on it...
And once you have everything the way you want it again delete your titanium back up folder and reboot and then back them up again so once you do another update with wicked it will act properly

what about the user apps we backed up from a custom rom?
I'm off the stock since I laid my hands on my phone so I'm pretty sure the backups (TB) I've made was from a custom ROM, does it brings bloats too?
1 more thing, if you still recommend a clean start, is it ok if I keep the TB backup folder to restore the apps using "restore apps only"?
thanks before, your help is greatly appreciated

Bluetooth taking up lots of battery usage!! It's not even on!!

Bluetooth is taking up 86% of my battery usage, it's not even turned on. I rarely even use Bluetooth and it is draining my battery really fast. I had just recently has this problem with media taking up lots of battery usage, and wiped cache and dalvik, dirty flashed ROM, wiped cache and dalvik again, and fixed permissions. It seemed to work, but now I have this Bluetooth problem.
-Thanks for any help
-By the way I am running JELLYBAM ROM v7.7.0 (This is also the ROM I dirty flashed.)
This has been happening to me to a lesser extent. For me it's usually when I'm done using bluetooth I'll turn it off, but I noticed it hangs turning off and then begins to use a ton of battery. What I started doing is force stopping bluetooth every time I'm done using it. It's not ideal but solves the problem and it's quick

You mentioned dirty flash...
You might as well do a full wipe and see if things improve.

This.
Your bluetooth has gone all Skynet and became self aware. A full wipe will definitely resolve it. Either that or you can try freezing it and it's services with Titanium if you don't use it.

Noob question. Help! Battery drain fast.

Hi, this is a probably already answered. I am new with root and flashing rom. After i rooted my galaxy note 2 N7105 and using jedi x16 rom. Start to drain my battery fast. I already read many post about cpu governor and tweaks. I tried different governor but it has no help. Still my battery drain fast. Any suggestion why i encounter this battery drain? Sorry for my bad english.
Thanks!

My advice, better stay close to ROMS close to stock. Plus, turn off sync, google back up, motion if you don't use/need any of those features. And explore the settings, there are things that you can turn on/off to save your battery.
Thanks!another question. Is it true that i need to wait a couple of days to so that my noye 2 can adjust to the new rom? Because. I rooted and flash jedi x16 last thursday only.

Since it is recommended by the devs, yes.
Also try charging your phone til 100% then wait for a half an hour at least then unplug it, then go to recovery mode(CWM recovery) and under advance, wipe battery stats.
And you can try DisableService app from playstore, it can disable unnecessary services of any app. Less services running, less battery drain. Be careful though with what services you disable. Here's the link for the app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=cn.wq.disableservice
Okay i will try that. Thanks! By the way i have 2 diffent battery. Do i need to charge 100% and go to recovey mode? I think this is a noob question. XD
Thanks for your reply sir.

Yes charge it until 100% and wait for it to charge a little more, at least half an hour. Cause sometimes 100% isn't really 100%, that's why this procedure is needed for the phone to know what's really a 100% charge. It's like a calibration. I think you can do it only on one battery since every battery is not exactly the same.

Are you using a white theme on your rom? Better change it to black or stock theme. White colors makes the pixel on your screen light up and drain battery.

Install battery calibration by nema from the play store. It will do the same job.

No offense but you know, I used to do all this battery stat wipe stuff. Calib...etc. Then I started seeing articles about battery crash and low burn in. On top of that I read increasingly more about how chain fire himself said wiping battery stats is placebo if you think it is healthy or has any positive effect ...I really wanted not to believe it. Lol but hey that was couple years or so ago. I Dont mess with the stats unless I'm testing my work.
