Ready to flash, just a few final questions - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Greetings from Australia!
Recently posted about my newly aquired Desire HD and had some questions (Which were answered very quickly, thanks guys!). I think I have all the needed tools in order so just need to confirm a few final steps before I go ahead.
Firstly, TitaniumBackup, will that backup my entire stock rom and if needed, will I be able to restore my phone back to factory condition with this tool? If not, how do I back up my stock rom so if theres any warranty issues I can easily restore my phone to factory condition.
Secondly, should I follow these two threads, in the order given below
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=855403
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=857537
OR use this single thread

Any help really appreciated!

Titanium Backup needs Root Permission, so will only works on a Rooted Device.

Titanium does NOT back up the ROM. You need a recovery image like clockworkmod and perform what is now commonly referred to as a NAND backup. Apps like ROM Manager makes this a simple task (it's a GUI for clockworkmod recovery).

How can you save your current ROM?

hello is there away to do the title of this thread?
I have a unbranded ROM but it's loaded with my operators Data settings, and I'll be loathed to type them in if I decide to return to the stock ROM, so is there a way to save your current ROM incase it goes wrong, or your flash and decide to go back?
TIA Luke.
Nandroid backup - which you will certainly be doing before flashing anything new. Won't you?
Thinks - you are rooted aren't you?

Simple answer is no, it can't be done. You need root to backup your rom.
Actually, you don't need root to do a nandroid backup. Just a custom recovery.

I am new to this, coming from iphone. I just love all the features and customizations availalbe.
Rooting on my galaxys4 was easy. thanks all
Thanks for this info too. just what i was looking for.
:good:
If you have rooted and installed any decent backup software they can backup the entire rom and all settings.
Then even if you mess up your phone and boot loop it, as long as you can get into recovery you can restore everything.
So it serves multiple purposes, I prefer this method to rom manager and titanium backup.

[Q] Removing CM7 (and other ROMs)

Hey every. Sorry if this question is already answered and it is a repost. How can i uninstall Cyanogenmod 7 RC2 from my Incredible, but still keep it rooted? Would the same way work for other ROMs as well, or does each ROM have a different way to remove them? Thank you in advance for your help.
If you made a backup then you can easily restore.
If you didn't, then you can flash the stock incredible ROM.
You will continue to stay rooted unless you take additional steps to unroot your phone.
Also I think you may have a misconception of how the ROM's work. These aren't installed on top of your phone, they remove the old one and replace it with whatever ROM you flash. Of course as long as you made a backup before you flashed then how your phone was before the flash will be right there if you ever choose to restore.
I did backup before I installed the Cyanogenmod 7. How do i 'recover'? Also, if i were to flash, would this take me back to being unrooted?
The way I understood it you can use ROM manager to load the Nandroid you created before flashing CM7, bringing back all your settings/text/calls etc you had before flashing your new rom. I've yet to attempt to go back to stock so someone correct me if I'm wrong.
You'll keep root unless to take the steps to go from s-off to s-on, and flash the stock RUU. Restoring a nandroid will restore the backup to the exact point the backup was made, so make regular backups!
Searched and cannot find themost current stock incredible ROM, any help?

Haven't flashed it yet, but this is the first of many that link actually was live. Thank you.
Ok. So i havent done anything because I am extremely busy, but now i have some time to get this done. As it is, I'm going to have to unroot my phone, putting it back to stock. How do i do this so that the s-off goes to s-on, and make sure everything is done properly? Thx for all your help
pretty sure you just flash the stock ruu and then run the unrevoked s-on tool.
i would run a factory reset before running the ruu and then again after just to make sure you are totally bone stock.
Should I use Rom manager to flash or use something else? Sorry for all the questions, just want to do this without problems.

If you made a backup power off the phone and reboot it into recovery. Go to the "Back Up and Restore" Tab and then restore. Choose the date and you are back.

[Q] "Where to start " for defy ??

i think our forum is so much jumbled and crowded with soo much great stuffs
please i would like to request something to pick up for flashing and other questions . i am finding difficulty in initializing my research on my defy
Requesting your co operation to link up some threads in proper order to work with and start from some sort of START / FIRST READ ME GUIDE
sorry for the request its just i dont like my defy to get bricked (soft or hard).
Thank you
Just a question: which version of Android is your Defy running? I know most Defys run Eclair, but some are already being sold with Froyo installed. This affects directly on the flashing process: if you have Eclair, you have to make a special kind of backup. You know, custom firmwares void your warranty.
If your Defy has Froyo and you flash another Froyo ROM (or CM7, which is Gingerbread), you can easily switch back to your stock firmware if you need to send your device to repair. If your stock ROM is Eclair, and you flash Froyo or Gingerbread, without the special backup, you won't be able to downgrade.
IMO this is a good place to start. Waiting for your reply in order to send further instructions.
Iam also having the same problem. I bought mine two days ago.. And I don't know where to start from..
My defy has eclair.. And I bought it in india.. So I should backup first?

A question about that:
I have a new defy with OTA froyo update from T-Mobile USA. If I want another froyo rom, do I need to flash the sbf/firmware, or can I just do a nandroid recovery of the new rom with clockworkmod?

If you flash a new sbf without a wipe, you will keep all your apps etc, whereas you'll have to back everything up and reinstall if u do a nandroid. i recommend backing up either way.

I don't really have anything on this phone to keep since its new, data and apps can be wiped out completely.
I do want to get rid of the motoblur apps.
So this is what I plan on:
Root (already done)
Install CWM
Backup my existing rom on sdcard
Copy new rom to sdcard
Flash new rom with CWM
Say goodbye to Motoblur
I imagine I will need to do a couple of data wipes in the process. I assume before backup and before flashing.
Will this work? Motoblur gone for good?
Update:
WORKS
I highly recommend JBoogie3 roms. Quick and easy.

Help!! Baseband 1747UCLH9 and Restore?

After extensive reading, I think what I need to do is RESTORE to stock OS (from CM 10) and use my Titanium Backup to "FREEZE" unwanted bloatware.
I'm SO confused as to how to do this. I read this link (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2031840) for Odin-One Click but the baseband is (seemingly) different from mine. As I read/understand, the Odin-One Click is for UCDLK3 and I'm on baseband UCLH9. Too, I did not use Odin to flash in the first place; I used GooManager.
Could someone give me a specific HELP as to how to get back to factory settings (though I'd love to keep the phone ROOTED, if that's possible).
Here is (perhaps) pertinent info: Galaxy S3 i747UCLH9 (ATT). I have backed-up Titanium Backup to GoogleDrive.
I certainly will appreciate all the help I can get and will chalk it up as a great gift on Christmas. Thanks!!!!

Following the instructions here will restore your phone to a stock-but-rooted state. If you want to upgrade to LK3, use the LK3 images (this will mean your phone will be running Jelly Bean); if you want to end up with a stock LH9, you'll (apparently) need to start with LG1 and follow the instructions listed in that section.

Thanks!! Quick double-check questions:
1. I followed the link and saw the JellyBean version. Does it matter that (I'm assuming) the baseband for the download is UCDLK3 and the one on my phone (under settings > about ) is UCLH9.
2. Also, do I need to worry about the Triangle Away trip count thing? (As my language shows, I know little about this.)
3. When I restore, will my phone still be rooted? If not, how can I root it? (I've completely forgot what I did in the first place to root it.)
4. When it is restored and rooted, can I use Titanium Backup to: a) freeze bloatware and b) reinstall some my previous apps?
Thanks so much!!

Assuming your backups are intact (which they should be, as the process will preserve your internal storage - but it doesn't hurt to take a few extra steps before going ahead to make sure you have a spare copy of them somewhere), you will be able to do exactly that.

As I recall, the "yellow rectangle" is mainly applicable to older versions of Odin (I could be wrong about that, though); I certainly don't remember seeing anything of the sort when doing this to my own phone.
Just keep going with the procedure.

[Q] Newb M8 questions

Hi all,
Long time reader, first time poster.
Please don't kill me if my questions are somehow dumb. I promise I searched the web and xda thouroughly before posting.
1) I rooted my phone with HTCDev.com for the sole purpose of installing titanium backup. I tried to unintall some unwanted bloatware (scribble, tv, twitter, zoe, fitbit and more...) but they keep returning after boot. Why is that? Is it related to S-on? Is there a simple way to fix this?
2) My current software version is 1.54.707.7, I can update OTA to 2.22.707.3. Should I? From my experience with my previous samsung device, I'm afraid that updating blindly can cause more harm than good at some cases.
3) Can I update OTA even when I'm rooted? Will I need to replace the recovery and root again?
Thanks in advance,
Tal

Hi Tal,
ok let's see if I can help you a little bit.
Regarding (1) I got a question: where and which files of the named apps did you delete?
Regarding (2) Sure you could update vis OTA as long as all system apps and stock recovery ist installed. Did you reinstall stock recovery, or are you unsing some custom recovery? As with custom recovery you can download but not install the OTA. This can then be done even if you are rooted. If you use supersu having the pro version installed you could try activating OTA survival mode and maybe root acces will still be there after performing the OTA. If not you could simply reinstall a custom recovery and using this root.
Hope this helps!?
If you could give me some answers regarding (1) I'll try to help ypu with this as well.

Thanks for the detailed and fast response, Yoda!
Regarding (1), I'm not sure I understand what you mean "where and which files". I backed up the mentioned apps in titanium backup, and then uninstalled them, again, with titanium backup. This method worked for me on my previous device (Samsung i9300).
Regarding (2), that's valuable information that I did not get anywhere from reading the sticky posts. I didn't know that the original recovery is needed in order to update OTA. I installed TWRP in order to install SuperSU. Is there a specific version of stock recovery that goes with the device? Or is there just one stock recovery for m8?
I had another question hidden in there, I'll make it number 3:
(3) Can someone tell me if the 2.22.707.3 version is any good? Stable enough? Or should I stick with 1.54.707.7 in the meanwhile?
Thanks allot!

(1) there are two folder /system/app and /system/priv-app. And overall there is the rw settings of the new kernel used. To be abled to unistall unwanted system apps maybe take a look at this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2723463, as maybe you need another kernel to accomplish it.
(2) you have to use a corresponding recovery, meaning you would have to download the 1.54.707.7 recovery (just google for it and you should find it in any forum) to work.
(3) I'm sorry that I can't be of any help here, as I performed an S-OFF debranding my phone and changin the CID to HTC__102 right from the start, setting it up to be on the WWE 2.22.401.4 since then.
3) the newest update (2.22 one) is very stable for me, no problems at all.

1) HTCDev unlocks the boot loader, it doesn't root. This can delete some default system apps, preventing an OTA. In order to have changes to system stick after reboot you need a kernel module: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=51543139
2) Don't worry, HTC are much better with updates than Samsung. They work, you can trust them.
3) Once you have unlocked boot loader, you may struggle to update OTA due to the missing apps, but there are threads here explaining what to do. As mentioned, you'll need stock recovery and yes, you may need to root again, after installing your custom recovery after the update.

Thanks for all the valuable info!!
I tried searching for the recovery, but as always, it's not that simple.. Too many sources of information and I don't know who's genuine. I haven't found a link on XDA yet (to the full stock ROM yes, not for the recovery only).
You say that OTA is a hassle when the recovery is replaced. I'm not stressed on upgrading OTA. How WOULD YOU SUGGEST to upgrade? Downloading the newest stock from XDA and using fastboot?
I created nandroid backups before but never restored one, so JUST TO BE SURE: this backup will be the full snapshot? Meaning: my old version (if the new one sucks) + apps + data? I don't need to backup ANYTHING except doing a nandroid backup?
Thanks again.
Tal
UPDATE: dug around some more and found the stock recoveries here after following the link from this post.
But before I flash anything, I just want to make sure that:
1) The nandroid I'll do in TWRP is the only backup I need to do.
2) There is no simpler option than returning to stock recovery, updating OTA, returning to TWRP recovery, rooting.
