[SOLVED] ROM or Radio first? - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi there.
Erm.. this is kinda weird question, say that the ROM that you wish you flash requires a different radio from your current one, will you actually flash the new radio first then only the ROM?
Or you will flash ROM then only radio. Will there be any impact?

ROM first.
9 times in 10 it won't make any difference but there's a chance a ROM might replace the radio anyway.

Thanks Mr_JMM!

I think it doesn't matter..You only need to match your libhtc-ril and radio....

Yes, ROM first.
Mods: This thread can be marked solved and closed now I think.

However....
SOME ROMs when going from certain radio's to certain radio's have had reports that it is better to flash the radio before the ROM.
This seems to have cropped up with the latest GB Sense ROM's.
So I take it back, as a rule of thumb, flash ROM first, I still stand by that, however, check with the ROM first but be aware such things are usually buried deep in a thread and maybe something that gets fixed with later updated versions of that ROM.
Again. ROM first but when a brand new ROM comes out, specifically the new GB Sense ROM's, check the first 5-10 pages.
At time of post, LeeDroid's ROM v3.0.0 is one such ROM that might work better with Radio flashed first.
My apologies but this info is very very recent.

OK, that could make sense. Thought I stepped in deep doo-doo earlier, but rocked back to life with the nan backup. Scared me all to hell, but I might try flashing the radio, then LeeDroid. When coming from CM7 rc3 - It froze on boot.

I did radio first them ROM and had no issues.

Radio Rom Downgrade?

I have flashed the newer Radio Rom so i could flash a 2.2 rom, but am having same smallish issue with 2.2 roms.
If i go back to a 2.1 rom will i need to downgrade my radio rom to an older version or is it ok to use newer radio?
If going back to a 2.1 based rom, use one of the 4.xx.xx.xx radio's as they are intended for Eclair roms.
For Froyo 2.2 roms, use the relevant 5.xx.xx.xx radio.
The 5.xx.xx.xx radio's are not intended for Eclair roms so yes, you will have to downgrade back to 4.xx.xx.xx.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
As far as I'm aware, the new radio is specific to froyo. It can cause some issues on 2.1 roms.
I'm sure I seen someone post that they had problems.
You can downgrade exactly the same way you updated anyway though. Just make sure you remember not to interrupt the flash.
Thank you for your answers MasDroid/socktug.
Does someone know where to download a 4.xx.xx.xx as all i can find are 5.xx.xx.xx radio roms.
You will find them HERE
Thank you again, have now downloaded 32.37.00.32U_4.06.00.16_2, will downgrade and back to 2.1 rom later.
Thanks again.

All custom roms will have a bug or two. There is no prefect rom and there never will be. IF you want a rom that just works stay stock. This is not a rom site it is a development site. Which means we like bugs cause then we can learn to fix them on our own.

ICS back to GB Question

I am on the ICS Darkside Evolution Beta 1 Rom by TDJ and would like to go back to a GB rom. Is there a way to go back to GB without any issues?? Can i just flash a GB rom and be fine after that? And is the UVLC8 ICS radio compatible with GB roms?? Reason i ask is because im getting better reception with that radio so i would like to keep it but i don't want to brick my phone or anything if i flash back to GB. Any information would help and would be seriously appreciated it. And the reason i would like to go back to GB is because most of the APPs aren't ICS ready so i would just like to wait it out and GB roms are obviously more stable at this point in time.
+1
It's a shame you will prob get flamed for this thread, but I too was looking for the same information. I just spent 20min trying to sort through the 10+ pages of google results and I can say 8 out of 10 simply said "Search". The others where not very clear as to provide an understanding of what was changed when going to ICS, and what needs to be changed to go back to GB.
I am looking forward to an answer by someone with patience for people trying to learn. I dont know about the rest, but I am not looking for a n00b guide, just a better understanding of what needs to be done.
FYI: I have not flashed to ICS yet.

Yes if your flashing its the same process darkside wipe. Install rom . Let it sit for 10 minutes reboot. You can just nandroid as well. Yes the newest radio is compatible with gingerbread roms. I'm using it right now on juggernaut.

So I guess the radio is compatible with CM7 too right?
CM7 is Gingerbread, so yeah!
How was the performance of the stock radio on GB versus what you have tried with the ICS ROMs? Is the signal strength consistent on the old and new radio and ROMs? Is the data faster on the old or new radio and ROMs?
I ask, because I have a HTC Amaze, and am considering moving to a Samsung Galaxy SII, and when moving to the T-Mobile ICS leak on the Amaze, the reception was far inferior for me, than the stock GB ROM and radio.

[Q] RIL Confusion

Hi Everyone,
I'm a bit confused with RIL files and i would like to have some clarifications.
From what i am reading on sense roms needs to be flashed with RILs which i get. I currently have Radio 12.56.60.25U_26.10.04.03_M and i flash the Ril 12.56.60.25U_26.10.04.03_M when i'm using this ROM DHD_WWE_3.12.405.1_STOCK_rooted_by_nitr00. Ok, so for AOSP/AOKP/MIUI Roms i shouldn't need to install andy RILs correct? Just install the ROM and go, right? Also if i do want to try out Sabsa Prime v8.5 is there a new set of Rils that i need to use or do i use the Ril i was using before?
For people who have different brand phones other than HTC is there a Ril alternate that needs to be installed to match the radio or is it flash ROM and go?
Many thanks everyone. This have been stopping me from trialing out different Roms except for modified sense gingerbread roms like ARHD.

Only use RILs on ROMs that are both Sense and pre-ICS. For all other ROMs (like Sabsa Prime, which is ICS) you just flash the ROM and you're good.

Just to make it a little more understandable:
Every Rom needs a RIL;
But in many Custom Roms the Devs already build in the RILs;
The RIL must correspond with your Radio; if it doesnt, you will end up with no Reception;
See the quote below and the the related Thread for more detailed Information.
I just followed the discussion some days ago, cause I wanted to update My Desire HD to the latest Radio, and didn't wanted to brick my phone.
It's always better to understand why things behave like they do, instead of follow some instruction without being aware whats happening.
ShadowPony said:
I don't entirely agree with your statements.
EVERY ROM comes with a RIL. Period. No exception, otherwise the radio doesn't work.
For AOSP ROMs there is a RIL, but have not seen it apart from ROM.
With Sense everything gets weirder because HTC released a new RIL for almost any combination of Sense with OS (at least until ICS, where old RILs no longer function properly)
even with any sense ROM, you can only flash the baseband (radio), and if you have reception problems, then also go for the RIL
also, the latest radio with RIL is: 12.69.60.29_26.17.14.11_M

@o4kareg, GetRIL reports matching baseband/RIL for me with 12.69.60.29_26.17.14.11_M and the corresponding RIL

Right!!
your Rom has the RIL included...
my DHD runs on radio 12.69a.60.29U_26.17.14.11_M also without extra installing RIL...
cause it's included in my ROM by the Dev.

So if i don't want to update my radio what RIL should i use for my version? will the gingerbread Ril be used? and how about AOSP roms? I had be experiences updating the radio before. i've update radio + matching RIL and my phone cannot hold a call connection longer than 10mins.

Unless you have a GB Sense ROM, just use the RIL that came with the ROM.

[Q] Flash EVO 4G back to stock ROM

Does anyone have a working link to a stock EVO 4G stock ROM that can then be used to update to the latest stock ROM+radios+whatever? I've been searching around here and the Internet in general, but I'm having trouble wading through the sea of dead links to stock ROMs and links to ROMs that have been hacked to remove radios and whatnot.
I've been using the last good Evervolv JB ROM and it's just too unstable, and my radios and stuff are probably out of date too, so I'd like to try going back to stock for a while.
Note regarding root: It would be nice to be able to keep root, but not if it means having to use stock ROMs that have been modified to the point where it will be a pain to update to the latest stock ROM+radios+whatever. I can always re-unroot myself if needed.
Thanks!

I'm looking for the exact same thing... I'd like to go back to the stock HTC Sense ROM, but I've lost my old backup copy (long story) and having trouble finding a suitable replacement. Did you happen to save a backup of your stock ROM before switching to the Evervolv ROM? If so, could you send me the Zip?
Or, if anyone out there on the forum could help, that would be great.
I was hoping to get some benefit to a more recent version of Android, but all the ROM's I've tried thus far seem to have one glitch after another. I'd prefer to go back to a stock, or some slightly upgraded version of the SENSE IU. Any suggestions appreciated.
I downloaded this ROM as it looked like a good "SENSE-esque" ROM, and looks like most everything is working on this version.
http://themikmik.com/showthread.php?12344-ROM-5-09-12-New!!The-Express!!-Updated!!-Working4G!!-Full-Landscape-Sense-3-0-Aroma-Installer!!&p=203943#post203943
Thoughts?
I don't have a backup of my stock ROM as far as I know.
I really wanted something close to stock, so I think I ended up settling on [Rom]TN_Elousions3.2_OTA_5.07.651.6_Deoxed_Stock_Theme.zip which is a moderate mod of the last stock ROM.
I ended up going through the S-OFF process as well to make sure that I had the latest radios and such.
It's functional, but between the Sense changes and the fact that it's Gingerbread-based means that there are some things about the UI that just aren't as nice as Evervolv. The upshot is that the battery consumption is lower and the hardware features work or work better (4G, FFC, camcorder, FM radio, etc.).
I'm tempted to try one of the last official Cyanogen ROMs just to see if I like the UI better than Sense, but I'll probably just stick it out until I get a new phone.
