[Q] TV-Out Help - Captivate Accessories

I been looking around and found alot of info but havn't had any success at all when it comes down to doing tv out. All I get is a scrambled line. I've tried moving the colors around things like that.
Maybe its the ROMS I'm using or the kernals? Who has gotten it to work with what ROMs and kernals?
I have the OEM samsung cord and I've tried with with 2 different captivates and many different ROMs and kernals.
EI. Perception multiple versions
Continuum v4 going to try v5 tonight
Cog multiple versions
and many differents kernals.
Any other tips you guys have?

This is what works for me. I'm running Cognition 4.3.1 and use a cable that came with an old Sony Handycam. With this cable I have to shift everything down one plug. The red on the cable plugs into the yellow (video) on the TV. Yellow on the cable plugs into white on the TV, and white on the cable plugs into red on the TV. I then set my TV to the right AV input and on my phone I go to Settings->Display->TV out and turn TV out on.
Hope it helps.

Has anyone have any success with continuum v5 I just tried and no go

a) are you sure it is th ecord for captivate? i believe the i9000 is diferent.
b)is it a bad cord?
c)do other devices work on that tv through rca?

Settings > Display > TV out > NTSC for North america PAL for europe
sometimes you must switch the yellow and white around, try white as video

if you need to swap colors you have the wrong cable. if you use audio cables for video there will be artifacts. also if there ring for ground is different then no combo of cable swapping can work.

no...
i use knock off cables.
white is video, yellow is left audio no problems at all
its just wires. the color doesnt matter. it is just a wire that goes from here to there...
the plastic on the end doesnt change anything.
as long as the ground is in the right place it works. all 3 wires use the same ground.
but i have never read about one with the ground NOT in the right place...

if there is one thing i know it is video cables. i guarantee that if you use yellow for video on a proper cable it will look better. though it will never look as good as the phone screen because composite video is incapable of passing that resolution.
video cables are 75ohms look it up
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coaxial_cable
check the how it works section of this wikipedia article.standing waves [more or less cable resonance, a organ pipe effect but with electricity] caused by the cable being dissimilar to the transmitter and reciever can cause an artifact that is often called dot crawl. dot crawl is also associated with push a resolution that is too high throgh the cable so you may not eliminate it completely but the overall clarity will be better iwth proper cables
ill look later but i saw a table with different products and the pin mapping for various devices. im pretty sure the i9000 uses a different pin mapping causing part or the headset issues with i9000 kernels. (i believe this is a combination between cable differences and mapping of hardware inputs)

mine works just fine on my LG 42 " flatpanel no video corruption.
the knock off cable i have, even the yellow, doesnt meet the wikipedia standards you told me to read.
its the same type of wire and quality as the audio cables. thats why it was 3$ on ebay.
but it works PERFECT.
but i dont the top of the line $300 each monster audio cables.

it is not something you can measure with a multi meter. 75 ohms is measured @ about 3mhz (i think) and can be a result of a slight inductive effect or the skin effect caused by high frequency electricity.
monster cables are a scam. as long as it meets the 75 ohm standard and is well shielded it will work just fine.
it is possible that some of the knock off stuff only use 75ohm cables only so the audio part of the cable is using the 75ohm standard as well. you may not be able to tell a 75ohm cable from an audio cable. if in a set they often look identical with only the yellow connector to give it away.
in my experience there is a clear dot crawl any time i have attempted to use audio cables for video. this is apparent any time two colors meet on the screen horizontally. it looks like an interlocking pattern of tiny boxes alternating between the two colors. the boxes will apper to walk across the line that the colors intersect.
it may not be visible depending on the frequency of the standing wave which will be determined by the length of the cable and the intensity. there may also be some sort of filtering in the tv that improves the image to some degree.

i know it cannot be measured. but its not shielded cable
but it works fine on my cheap dvd player in my van too with a 15' cable. great for gps..
no ghosting no dot crawling..

fair enough. i guess. just trying to give good information. if someone complains about image quality they might want to know that proper cables cant hurt.

true and like wise the cheapies might work perfectly..
all in fun and learning...

do I have to make sure all three are plugged in or is it alright that I just have the video one in.

just video should be fine after enabling in options.
menu button> settings > display > tv out (check) and (NTSC or PAL)
try each one if the yellow dosnt work

Do Kernals and Different ROMs have different resualts??

most roms are set to PAL for europe by default just change to NTSC for north america

But Roms/kernels don't make a difference?

there shouldnt be a probl;em with any current 2.2 rom. i havent tried with 2.3 but would also expect that to work.
is it possible you have a cable for an i9000?

i am trying to find a chart like this for the sgs phones. i saw it somewhere, notice there are 2 possible rings for the ground. if the cable has the wrong ground ring it wont work on a captivate. i am pretty sure the i9000 and vibrant use a different ground ring from captivate.

EDIT: At least one person has claimed one or both of these cables did not work for them.
Did you test either of these?
I would caution against the top one. It puts a great deal of torque on the onboard micro usb. I would recommend the bottom one with the flexible cord.
Just ordered both of these. Hopefully one will arive within the next week as I really want to try this hack!

I ordered both sets, at $1-2 each delivered.. Asked roebeet if nokia made a difference but hasn't replied. There is that option at DX, but I didn't buy that one.

I bought the Nokia CA-157 cable from ebay. Turns out it has a squared off 'A' micro USB connector which doesn't fit. It has to be a 'B' connector (non-square) to fit the Xoom. I didn't even know there were different types! Ah well it didn't cost much. I just ordered this one instead.
you star footboydog, I was looking at getting a cable from china, but this looks like the one, and cheep too! Thanks
Thought you guys might be interested in my "little" project...

I'll post the updates and pics as soon as I get the parts. In the mean time if you're looking for an OTG adapter, the ones I found on eBay might be what you're looking for. And you don't have to pay to ship in bulk from China ;-)
Pretty good idea...would definitely like to see if this works.
I just received the one I ordered. It works with the wireless keyboard that came with my Acer Revo nettop PC which is very nice! Even the following keys work:
Media playback controls (play/pause, volume etc controlled with Fn and function keys together)
Fn-F4 works as the home key
The right click button to the right of the space bar brings up the menu in the top right (at least in the browser).
The search button (Fn-F2) brings up the search bar
Ctrl-T opens a new tab
Esc seems to map to "Stop" in the browser but back everywhere else
Caps lock and shift
Tab key tabs between text fields
Arrow keys navigate in browser and home screens
Unfortunately it seems to think I have a US keyboard (@ and " are swapped).
P.S. I am unrooted

I'm really keen to get one of these OTG adapters, especially now that the official update is in the wild for usb support.
This is the type I am looking for
http://www.meritline.com/micro-usb-type-b-male-to-usb-a-female-cable-black---p-62877.aspx
It was mentioned in the OP I think.
I can't buy from them, as they won't ship to South Africa.
And the others look dodgy like they will put strain on the usb port, as was mentioned earlier in this thread.
Any ideas?
Thanks
Cheers
Anyone check if Monoprice makes an OTG cable? I'll check when I get back home.
Asked this in another thread, but it looks dead now.
Anyone know whether the xoom USB cable or any microUSB cables have OTG integrated into them? If so, maybe we could just use USB female to female adapters? What if the USB female to female is a crossover cable? I did a bunch of research on USB OTG, but it looks like most manufacturers don't use the sticker even if the cable has OTG capability.
Please don't answer if your answer is "I think so" or "probably not"... That kills me on forums...

Ha Ha, I just asked the same thing on a different thread.
USB OTG fun
So, obviously I'm also curious about this.
I might go ahead and buy a female to female to try it out, they should be quite cheap. And I'm sure I will find more uses for it if it doesn't work for this application. Will let you know when I have tried it, assuming I have received the update by then.
Ordered this cable on ebay:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250817547531#ht_4462wt_905
Thanks to advice from a guy on the other thread that I mentioned.
It was really cheap and they are shipping all the way to SA for free.
Oh, slack04, the standard usb cable that comes with the Xoom won't work for OTG using a female to female on the other end, as far as I understand it.
As far as I know, the 5th wire on the micro B side will be disconnected so that it knows that it is the slave, so even with a female to female, it won't kick into host mode, but it is my opinion that a simple hack (again suggested by others in the above thread) where you connect pin 5 to pin 4 on the standard cable, will enable OTG and then it will work with the female to female.
I hope this helps.
Cheers
Has anyone received the flexible connector in the OP yet? I want to find a known working OTG cable and it seems next to impossible.
Edit: When the blazes will Verizon, etc. start carrying these. I don't get why they wouldn't. They would likely sell them for $25 and make a killing from it.

[Q] Helmet Handsfree Wiring - Nexus One - Plz enlighten me

Hello,
I read this forum for quite a long time but never had a chance to register or post. Please forgive me for coming in with questions.
Okay... I want to connect my Nexus One to my Nolan N-Com Basic Kit, but I can't find a suitable ready-made cable for that.
And then I:
Bought two BlackBerry handsfree (Chinese made - $3.42 each)
Cut them below the microphone/button part
Connect the four cables in it
Pictures speak better than words:

Okay, and now here's the problem:
If the cables are just separated like that, the sound is weird, low, and ugly
If I short Red and Green : Pause/Play/Ffw/Rew*
If I short Red and Blue : Pause/Play/Ffw/Rew*
If I short Red and Yellow : Pause/Play/Ffw/Rew*
If I short Green and Blue : Dead - No sound
If I short Green and Yellow : Sound's OK, loud enough, but still a bit weird (like either left/right channel is gone/low although both of the speakers works).
If I short Blue and Yellow : Sound's OK, loud enough, but still a bit weird (like either left/right channel is gone/low although both of the speakers works).
* Pause/Play/Ffw/Rew means sometimes it pause/play/fwd/rev the song, can't understand why, and sometimes it's also reboot the phone
I'm now using the Green and Yellow short, because it's the one that sounds better on most songs.
My first question:
What to do to at least make the sound alright? I crack open and look at the original BlackBerry wiring but got confused. There're R-G-B-Y cables going to the button/mic casing (the cables that I use), and then there're G-B-Y-Y going out from the button/mic casing to the earphones.
My second question:
I really want to have the original (Nexus One) handsfree's functionalities. Having buttons in the cable to receive/hangup phone calls and to play/pause/rew/ffw songs. Is there a wiring diagram for Nexus One's Handsfree somewhere?
Thank you.
I have a similar Problem, I bought a 4-pin 3.5 cable, which works perfect with the Computer, but not with my Nexus One. There is sound, but its horrible...
Do you got a solution for your Problems?
Hi,
Yes I ask a guy in a local electronics workshop to do the work for me based on the attached diagram in this post.
hackaday dot com/2010/11/03/patching-into-android-music-control/
So it needs some resistors, switch, etc., which is beyond my expertise.
Good luck!
ps: sorry for the new-user-spam-prevention workaround

I'm not familiar with your hardware but you may have the speakers grounded through the mic+ wire. Is there a screen on your cable? That might be the real 0v connection.

Your description of the wiring suggests to me that:
G and B are left and right speaker+
Y is 0v
R is mic+
HTH.
Like happy jack said, it looks like the green and blue are left and right (+)
Red is mic +
and "Yellow"(looks like copper) is ground (-)

It probably is because the pin configuration is different in the nexus one and the helmet.
Try to do this:
If that doesnt work, then you need to do something more advance that I dont know about.
If you want to just make the speakers work, you could just buy an stereo extension (plug with 3 pins to plug with 3 pins), or try to do this:
Solder both the red and yellow cable or just the yellow and dont solder the red one.
Hey guys, thanks for the replies, but I have the problem solved a few months ago by asking a technician to do the work for me based on the attached diagram.
I got the diagram from some blogs. Link is on my previous post, and here's another one:
wisebread [dot] com/build-a-cable-to-control-your-android-phone-while-you-drive
And although the diagram is for a TRS to TRRS conector, it's sufficient for the technician to create a connector cable that basically works like the original N1 handsfree, but without the microphone (because the micropone line is passed along the whole cable to be used by the helmet's microphone).
I got it.
As sotodefonk mentioned, N-Com and the Nexus One have different pin configurations. With the Information from yofazza, I was able to figure out which cables have to be crossed. Now the Sound is good, and the mic works!
Thank you guys!

I have the SGS2 world version (GT-I9100). Does the micro-USB connector on the bottom align up with all the other variants of this phone (Tmo, AT&T, Sprint..ect)? Do all of those have the plug in the same place?
EDIT sorry the pic is so big. I didn't know that before I posted...
EDIT #2 Reading a quick review of the Menotek adapter on Amazon, one of the complaints was its limitation of 720p output. Is that true? Cant the SGS2 output in 1080p?
Personally i'd just buy the cheapest MHL adaptor you can find. It's just a cable so why pay a fortune for it.
It's not just a cable -- there are some electronics inside (that's why they need a charger input).
Have you ordered one yet? I'd be interested in knowing which is the best option and weather there's any reason to avoid the really cheap ones?
gonna grab myself a cheap one of these adaptors and get my emulator groove on, on the big screen.. though god knows how gba games are going to look at 32inches...probably not great.
No.is only cable.
I got official samsung and it is working fine
I have the first one, if your phone is not in airplane mode the screen on your tv often goes completely black. You have to reconnect the mhl cable to display the screen on your tv again. Annoying when watching videos but putting your phone into airplane mode fixes this completely.
Quality is great, downloading a movie and watching it looks incredible, full HD. However if you plan on watching youtube videos on your TV, I suggest you download the app TubeMate, it allows you to stream YT videos in a much higher quality than the standard app.

But I am not so sure about what RCP is for as it is wired and provides no additional gadget for "remote control".
And it's only $13 elsewhere.

MHL Adaptor
I bought one a few days ago from Amazon.co.uk, offical Samsung for £14.99 with free delivery, bargain in my opinion.
You have to connect the Samsung charger to power it (although i haven't tested it without the charger to see if it still works). The phone battery seems to drain really fast with the MHL outputting via HDMI, and gets a little warm also, both cores doing their bit no doubt.
Have to say i'm very happy with, and the CEC function (if your tv supports it) is the icing on the cake. With it, you can use your tv's remote (or any ALL in One as in my case [Logitech]) to control the phone navigation, you can play games using the remotes d-pad, and use it to click on items in the menu, or on the internet, rewind, pause and fast forward videos.
I too had the screen blacking out on me as one person mentioned earlier, espcially when playing games, I'll try and see what flight mode does for it, but my conclusions where a less than perfect HDMI cable, as when i tested it on my brothers tv it worked flawlessly without a single blackout (Using a HDMI cable supplied with his SKY+ box).
Might have to buy one of these but i'm still looking for a solution to sending audio NOT over the HDMI since I don't have a HDMI input on my monitors, only DVI. Either over analogue 3.5mm out or bluetooth would be fine!
I think the reason it drains the battery still is because it is using the data pins to send the video. For fast charge these pins would usually be shorted and you can't have both. (That's my understanding anyway!)
I have bought on ebay 1 cable mhl + 1 cable micro usb --> USB femal for only 15€
But the max resolution of mhl is 720p

I bought my MHL cable from deal extreme for around $13.00. Not only did i get a samsung branded (probably fake) MHL cable, it came with a USB OTG cable and a USB retractable cable too. So far, all 3 seems to work fine and not too expensive

why cant we use the camera app when using the MHL function?...is it a hardware restriction?...i was using cm9 and when i start the camera with the adapter plugged in then close the camera app ,for a second the camera screen shows up on the tv.....if its hardware restricted then it would not do that at all...
on my mhl cable only outputs 1080i,is it adaptors fault?

Help: car aux cable

My sgs3 is only 2 days old. I'm on the stock Rom. Not rooted.
When I plug my Mytouch 4g slide into my 3.5 mm audio cable, it assumes I am plugged into headphones and starts playing music through my car. (The headphone symbol shows up on the status bar.)
With my gs3. I plug the phone into my car and it continues playing music through my phone speaker and ignores the fact that I have a 3.5mm cable plugged in.(no symbol in status bar.)
Headphones work fine, however playing music through my car does not. What is the fix for this? New cable?

do you have any kind of case on the sgs3? I noticed that some cases don't let you plug in the aux cables all the way and it doesn't get a good connection. make sure your aux cable is plugged in all the way. if that doesn't work try another cable to see if that's the issue.

Yea, I had this same problem. My case was preventing the cable from making a good connection. Took case off and works but now I hear music thru the left speaker. Anyone having this problem??? I tried a different AUX cable and I still have the problem. I wonder if there's a phone setting I need to change? Anyone please???
p.s. CD's and radio audio is thru both speakers but not phone.

I have a case but the aux cable I use is thin and goes all the way in. I am starting to think that the sgs 3 only likes the triple stripe plugs.(the ones on headphones that include a Mic on the wire). I'm going to look for a 6 foot male/male triple stripe 3.5 mm cable at fry's.

I have no problems with my regular 3.5mm headphone jack in my stereo, but I do agree that it is kind of touchy, especially with my case on. For a work around, I put my music on my SD card, and plug the usb into my phone, mount it as UMS with SGS3 EASY UMS, and Voila! Music on my stereo and control of the music through my car stereo vs the phone.
I got a new cable and having the same problems. Headphones still have no issue but I tested my phone connected to my ihome via audio cable and I'm having a funny issue where between songs if I press next, the speaker sounds like there's nothing plugged in. (Audio feedback) but then it stops when the new song plays.
Also... in my car I was able to play music if I plug the cable into my car and press play simultaneously. The 'headphones connected' notification comes up for about 1.5 seconds. If I press play while that notification is there, I can play one song. But then after one song finishes, the same problem happens.
Edit: I cannot produce the headphones connected notification by plugging the cable into my phone, only if the cable is already in my phone and I plug it into my car
I'm beginning to think that my headphone jack is not grounded properly so imma exchange the phone for another one if I test this issue with my friends gs3 and do not have the same problem

My friends sgs3 had some weird background noise in my car but it was working for the most part... it still wasn't perfect which makes me rather unhappy with the phone. Tomorrow I'm going to test my phone on my friends car radio to continue troubleshooting. Maybe I need to replace the audio jack in my bmw x3

Hi
I have all the external cables I need for the job.
It's the internal Hdmi and micro usb cable that connects to the main board and then has the cable to the two micro plugs you find at the back of the Atrix lapdock.
Thanks
Any success?
Hi fantomv50
Did you manage to find a source?
I need a couple myself.
Sorry for reviving old threads .. I'm in a similar jar .. I've broke mine ! Having the cable on/off .. moving it all over the place .. acted live a "lever" and it seems it broke !
Attaced pics !

Nothing?
I know... Old thread... But just throwing this in here as a reference!
I converted my lapdock to contain both an hdmi and micro usb port.
This is reallllllly time consuming as you are dealing with small wires- not to mention 20 of them. Look up a pinouts for both a micro-hdmi male, and full-hdmi female. Match them up. Draw it out. (I made the mistake of reversing the wires. Male-to-Female wiring can be confusing)
Pictures of the product show its a bit ugly... but it all works. As a display and with the keyboard/trackpad combo. I have more pictures of the final product.. but I'd have to look for them.
@llenp, very handy skill.
do you have Rpi2 problem with keyboard, my case is keyboard press delay but touchpad is good.

Thanks for the compliment!
None that I have noticed with the keyboard. If anything, there were times where the trackpad would stop working.
Could you just make a picture of the wiring ?

its good to hear someone still using the old atrix, i still got mine though but i have broken micro hdmi port on the phone part. my lapdock is still good i guess theres nothing j could try on, rpi still cost a huge amount in our country, cable conversions were also hard to find (micro hdmi female to hdmi)
I have the lapdock and the audio dock. I want to connect my sony xperia z1 with the screen broken in it and use. I opened the back and left the cables out of the lapdock. I also opened the desk dock and left the exposed cables to make it easier to connect the Z1. When I plugged the Z1 into the desk dock it charged the normal beter, but the OTG function did not work. Well I would connect the HDMI to the USB input of the desktop dock to pass the Z1 pro lapdock image. Does anyone know why USB port did not work as OTG?

I know this is an old thread, but I busted my usb connection, can you please help me with the pinout???
And as usual... I'm a little bit late to the party. The pdf isn't there anymore .. I'm wondering if anyone else can share it ?
Also, I'm curious where all the broken screen or broken mobo lapdocks go.. I still can't find any on ebay !
