EDIT: At least one person has claimed one or both of these cables did not work for them.

Did you test either of these?

I would caution against the top one. It puts a great deal of torque on the onboard micro usb. I would recommend the bottom one with the flexible cord.

Just ordered both of these. Hopefully one will arive within the next week as I really want to try this hack!

I ordered both sets, at $1-2 each delivered.. Asked roebeet if nokia made a difference but hasn't replied. There is that option at DX, but I didn't buy that one.

I bought the Nokia CA-157 cable from ebay. Turns out it has a squared off 'A' micro USB connector which doesn't fit. It has to be a 'B' connector (non-square) to fit the Xoom. I didn't even know there were different types! Ah well it didn't cost much. I just ordered this one instead.

you star footboydog, I was looking at getting a cable from china, but this looks like the one, and cheep too! Thanks

Thought you guys might be interested in my "little" project...

I'll post the updates and pics as soon as I get the parts. In the mean time if you're looking for an OTG adapter, the ones I found on eBay might be what you're looking for. And you don't have to pay to ship in bulk from China ;-)

Pretty good idea...would definitely like to see if this works.

I just received the one I ordered. It works with the wireless keyboard that came with my Acer Revo nettop PC which is very nice! Even the following keys work:
Media playback controls (play/pause, volume etc controlled with Fn and function keys together)
Fn-F4 works as the home key
The right click button to the right of the space bar brings up the menu in the top right (at least in the browser).
The search button (Fn-F2) brings up the search bar
Ctrl-T opens a new tab
Esc seems to map to "Stop" in the browser but back everywhere else
Caps lock and shift
Tab key tabs between text fields
Arrow keys navigate in browser and home screens
Unfortunately it seems to think I have a US keyboard (@ and " are swapped).
P.S. I am unrooted

You will find specifics for your keyboard layout in system/usr/keylayout and system/usr/keychars. Since it's taken me a long time to gather all this information I'll post something more detailed soon!

I'm really keen to get one of these OTG adapters, especially now that the official update is in the wild for usb support.
This is the type I am looking for
http://www.meritline.com/micro-usb-type-b-male-to-usb-a-female-cable-black---p-62877.aspx
It was mentioned in the OP I think.
I can't buy from them, as they won't ship to South Africa.
And the others look dodgy like they will put strain on the usb port, as was mentioned earlier in this thread.
Any ideas?
Thanks
Cheers

Anyone check if Monoprice makes an OTG cable? I'll check when I get back home.

Asked this in another thread, but it looks dead now.
Anyone know whether the xoom USB cable or any microUSB cables have OTG integrated into them? If so, maybe we could just use USB female to female adapters? What if the USB female to female is a crossover cable? I did a bunch of research on USB OTG, but it looks like most manufacturers don't use the sticker even if the cable has OTG capability.
Please don't answer if your answer is "I think so" or "probably not"... That kills me on forums...

Ha Ha, I just asked the same thing on a different thread.
USB OTG fun
So, obviously I'm also curious about this.
I might go ahead and buy a female to female to try it out, they should be quite cheap. And I'm sure I will find more uses for it if it doesn't work for this application. Will let you know when I have tried it, assuming I have received the update by then.

Ordered this cable on ebay:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250817547531#ht_4462wt_905
Thanks to advice from a guy on the other thread that I mentioned.
It was really cheap and they are shipping all the way to SA for free.
Oh, slack04, the standard usb cable that comes with the Xoom won't work for OTG using a female to female on the other end, as far as I understand it.
As far as I know, the 5th wire on the micro B side will be disconnected so that it knows that it is the slave, so even with a female to female, it won't kick into host mode, but it is my opinion that a simple hack (again suggested by others in the above thread) where you connect pin 5 to pin 4 on the standard cable, will enable OTG and then it will work with the female to female.
I hope this helps.
Cheers

Has anyone received the flexible connector in the OP yet? I want to find a known working OTG cable and it seems next to impossible.
Edit: When the blazes will Verizon, etc. start carrying these. I don't get why they wouldn't. They would likely sell them for $25 and make a killing from it.

Nope, sorry, they were out of stock when I last checked, and wouldn't ship to my country, so I didn't get it.

You can order the motorola camera connector from Amazon, I placed an order about an hour ago. Delivery is quoted at 10 days.

Xoom - USB wireless keyboard and mouse

So, with the update, anyone think we can hook up a wireless receiver (I'm thinking the logitech unifying receiver) and use both the keyboard and mouse with it? That's how I do it with the laptop, just wondering if anyone can read (and understand) the release notes to see if this is possible...
Well the support is for USB keyboards and mice, so I doubt the PC setup you have will work since the xoom probably wont have the drivers for that specific receiver. Not to mention that sounds really cumbersome.

Sorry, did I have this wrong? As I understood, this update enables USB host. Doesn't that mean that (assuming drivers were available) that USB keyboards and mice would work?
Not really that cumbersome, BTW- plenty of folk on here are already talking about connecting USB thumb drives. This setup would be the same, at least in terms of what's connected to the xoom. If you really need to know what I'm planning, here's what I have to set it up:
http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Note...AB9G/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1305066484&sr=8-8
That looks pretty nice you're right. I just Dont think the drivers will be supported.

Gah. Well, I'll just have to give it a go when I get the update. Side question: any suggestion on where to get a microUSB to USB Host connector? I can't figure out which are host and which are not...
this is the only officially supported one

There are other microusb to usb converters, but they lack the pin setup required, contrary to popular belief. This is straight from the motorola engineer who designed it.

suit yourself. The amazon one you buy will not work. I could hunt down the Moto forums post explaining why it wont, but It sounds like you wouldnt believe me anyways, so I wont waste my time trying to help you not waste your money. I do hope your setup works to be honest, it seems kinda cool, but this stuff is just too proprietary. Good luck.
One last aside, if paying 20 dollars is really that huge of a deal to you, you can make your own USB host cable. Which is why those 3 dollar amazon ones wont work, they lack usb host.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=13673416
I realize I made a typo in my earlier statement when I typed it added support for "Bluetooth keyboards", I meant to say "USB keyboards". Weve had bluetooth support since launch, that must have sounded ridiculous to you. I had basically meant to say that since you are planning on using a wireless receiver, the drivers would not be there. Now if you use the right usb host cable with a usb-cabled keyboard, then yes, it will definitely work. And with that I will stop jacking your thread.
If that's the case, then why are there several threads where people have updated to 3.1 with $3 cables from eBay?
and I knew what you were saying earlier even with the mistake
sent from my face
For the sake of overall Xoom awesomeness, I hope you turn out to be right. More options never hurt. Ive read threads were people got a usb host cable from ebay/amazon, and some types worked while others wouldn't. Its really trial and error I suppose.
Actually in all honesty USB Host does not mean every keyboard or mouse will work.... unix based drivers would first have to be directly recognized within the Android OS... most will work but not all... thats where testing comes into play

If anyone wants to pick one up without having to wait for it to ship from Hong Kong, I found a listing on eBay within the US for a nicer cable for $8.95. It's black to match the Xoom and has an angled micro USB connector to avoid it sticking out. It shipped the same day and was delivered two days after I ordered!
I can confirm it's working with multiple wireless mouse/keyboard sets as well as standard USB mice/keyboards and flash drives... I started geeking out when the cable got delivered and promptly started plugging every USB device I could find into my Xoom, just because I can!

Make your own cables

So far I have learned how to make a USB host cable and a universal charging cable. I have shared this in a few post but I figured it would be good to have them all in one place with a diagram.
I will update this drawing as I learn how to build the other cables.
Thanks goes out to pokey9000 for sharing how to do the USB host and nudging me the right way for figuring out the charging!
Update:
I guess the titles of each is not enough to properly relay what each does so here is a quick description of each.
1. USB Host - Puts the Tab into host mode so that you can use items like thumb drives and keyboards. If you want to use a USB powered hard drive, you will need to use a powered hub.
2. USB Host w/ Power - Puts the Tab into host mode but also allows you to charge the unit at the same time.
3. Universal Charging - For making a 30-pin cable that will let you charge your Tab off any 5V source so that you don't get the red X over the battery. When doing this, data transfers will not work.
4. Universal Charging Inline cable - For if you don't want to buy a 30pin connector or cut up your OEM cable, you can put this in line with your OEM cable and use any 5V source.

Not yet. I haven't built the USB host cable myself as my connectors are in the mail. I built that diagram from a mixture of what pokey9000 discovered plus what the pin outs are for the OEM cable.
Hopefully by the end of the week I will get the connector and will build this into a project enclosure which will also have a switch to change this between charge only, USB slave and USB host.
Cool. Seems like it would be easier to just grab a few of these cables, cut the cable and connect rather than soldering to the naked connectors from Kineteka.

Mostly likely, like the OEM cable, the connector is not fully populated. You would be able to easily make a charge only cable the will charge off anything, but to do other things like USB hosting, you need another pin, or rearrange the pins that are there which are probably a pain to do too.
Ah, true. Most likely lot of those pins don't have wires connected.
This is good stuff. I am looking forward to learning more. Thanks you for doing this.
I had a brain fart.
I know what the usb host w/ power cable would look like. I have parts orderd for the host mode configuration. I hopefully await a hdmi/usb-host cable.
First off, thanks for this awesome discovery !
But I've still got some questions..
what is the difference between the usb host and the usb host w. charging?
And what should the universal charger do?
Thanks!

The USB host should be pretty much the same as the OEM dongle. The host with power should allow you to charge the unit when also attached to a power supply. I have not tested this but I expect should work without a problem. The reason people might just opt to not have the power is to make a smaller package.
The universal charge cable puts the unit into charge mode no matter what your 5VDC power source is. Without this, you must use the OEM charger (or aftermarket adapter) else get a red X over the battery.
Anyone know if it would be possible to hack a USB port into the multimedia-dock? It has the 30pin male and female.. probably passthru.. I've yet to take it apart (I suspect there are screws on the bottom). Anyhow I figure the dock should work with the USB adapter, so maybe all the wires are there inside the base. Then it would just be a matter of adding a female USB (with appropriate resistor). And possibly this would allow charging, audio, etc WITH USB attached. Best part is that multimedia docks are available at local bestbuy, etc.
alternatively, i'm considering a keyboard <sigh>.. but only if usb host mode works with it.

Great! I am looking forward to seeing just how you do this.
I want know how one would do the hdmi cable, will that be hard to reverse engineer?
This dock is suppose to allow either the HDMI or the USB connector to plug in the back so that means it does pass all this through. This is going to be interesting....
okay a few questions again..
Would it be hard to make a usb keyboard work on the tab (like cutting up the usb cable and replacing it with a 30pin dock connector?)?
And how much effort would it take to create a hdmi out? or a normal video out if possible..? Because I actually need an old video out port but on the samsung site is says that the video out represented is not compatible with the 10.1..
and where do you solder everything on? I've yet to find a picture of the 30pin connector which tells you where to solder..
Where would I solder in this image? http://shop.kineteka.com/images/thumbs/0000564.jpeg
Or should I just get a tab-out like this:

Personally i'd just buy the cheapest MHL adaptor you can find. It's just a cable so why pay a fortune for it.
It's not just a cable -- there are some electronics inside (that's why they need a charger input).
Have you ordered one yet? I'd be interested in knowing which is the best option and weather there's any reason to avoid the really cheap ones?
gonna grab myself a cheap one of these adaptors and get my emulator groove on, on the big screen.. though god knows how gba games are going to look at 32inches...probably not great.
No.is only cable.
I got official samsung and it is working fine
I have the first one, if your phone is not in airplane mode the screen on your tv often goes completely black. You have to reconnect the mhl cable to display the screen on your tv again. Annoying when watching videos but putting your phone into airplane mode fixes this completely.
Quality is great, downloading a movie and watching it looks incredible, full HD. However if you plan on watching youtube videos on your TV, I suggest you download the app TubeMate, it allows you to stream YT videos in a much higher quality than the standard app.

MHL Adaptor
I bought one a few days ago from Amazon.co.uk, offical Samsung for £14.99 with free delivery, bargain in my opinion.
You have to connect the Samsung charger to power it (although i haven't tested it without the charger to see if it still works). The phone battery seems to drain really fast with the MHL outputting via HDMI, and gets a little warm also, both cores doing their bit no doubt.
Have to say i'm very happy with, and the CEC function (if your tv supports it) is the icing on the cake. With it, you can use your tv's remote (or any ALL in One as in my case [Logitech]) to control the phone navigation, you can play games using the remotes d-pad, and use it to click on items in the menu, or on the internet, rewind, pause and fast forward videos.
I too had the screen blacking out on me as one person mentioned earlier, espcially when playing games, I'll try and see what flight mode does for it, but my conclusions where a less than perfect HDMI cable, as when i tested it on my brothers tv it worked flawlessly without a single blackout (Using a HDMI cable supplied with his SKY+ box).
Might have to buy one of these but i'm still looking for a solution to sending audio NOT over the HDMI since I don't have a HDMI input on my monitors, only DVI. Either over analogue 3.5mm out or bluetooth would be fine!
I think the reason it drains the battery still is because it is using the data pins to send the video. For fast charge these pins would usually be shorted and you can't have both. (That's my understanding anyway!)
I have bought on ebay 1 cable mhl + 1 cable micro usb --> USB femal for only 15€

Of course... that's why you have a Samsung and not an iPhone.

Personally i'd just buy the cheapest MHL adaptor you can find. It's just a cable so why pay a fortune for it.

I actually did by the cheapest MHL adapter I could find on ebay and it works like a charm. Cost me around 6 € including shipping.
hi guys.
why cant we use the camera app when using the MHL function?...is it a hardware restriction?...i was using cm9 and when i start the camera with the adapter plugged in then close the camera app ,for a second the camera screen shows up on the tv.....if its hardware restricted then it would not do that at all...
on my mhl cable only outputs 1080i,is it adaptors fault?

Hi
I have all the external cables I need for the job.
It's the internal Hdmi and micro usb cable that connects to the main board and then has the cable to the two micro plugs you find at the back of the Atrix lapdock.
Thanks
Any success?
Hi fantomv50
Did you manage to find a source?
I need a couple myself.
Sorry for reviving old threads .. I'm in a similar jar .. I've broke mine ! Having the cable on/off .. moving it all over the place .. acted live a "lever" and it seems it broke !
Attaced pics !

I know... Old thread... But just throwing this in here as a reference!
I converted my lapdock to contain both an hdmi and micro usb port.
This is reallllllly time consuming as you are dealing with small wires- not to mention 20 of them. Look up a pinouts for both a micro-hdmi male, and full-hdmi female. Match them up. Draw it out. (I made the mistake of reversing the wires. Male-to-Female wiring can be confusing)
Pictures of the product show its a bit ugly... but it all works. As a display and with the keyboard/trackpad combo. I have more pictures of the final product.. but I'd have to look for them.
@llenp, very handy skill.
do you have Rpi2 problem with keyboard, my case is keyboard press delay but touchpad is good.

Thanks for the compliment!
None that I have noticed with the keyboard. If anything, there were times where the trackpad would stop working.
Could you just make a picture of the wiring ?

its good to hear someone still using the old atrix, i still got mine though but i have broken micro hdmi port on the phone part. my lapdock is still good i guess theres nothing j could try on, rpi still cost a huge amount in our country, cable conversions were also hard to find (micro hdmi female to hdmi)
I have the lapdock and the audio dock. I want to connect my sony xperia z1 with the screen broken in it and use. I opened the back and left the cables out of the lapdock. I also opened the desk dock and left the exposed cables to make it easier to connect the Z1. When I plugged the Z1 into the desk dock it charged the normal beter, but the OTG function did not work. Well I would connect the HDMI to the USB input of the desktop dock to pass the Z1 pro lapdock image. Does anyone know why USB port did not work as OTG?

Also, I'm curious where all the broken screen or broken mobo lapdocks go.. I still can't find any on ebay !

Original post :
I know that the box will have one, but i need more to have around home and office. The official Google store have them for 9$ BUT THEY SHIP ALMOST by END OF NOV. now i was wondering if anyone knows of some third party extensions that are available on Amazon or so.. And if anyone knows what specs are we looking for in such converts so we search for the right ones..
Feedback after using it, the mic fails most of the timea (30th November)
It needs to have the DAC in the adapter. Don't know what that is called. Look for digital adapter?
although you should wait for it to come at the end of nov
there is some in amazon but mostly bad or untasted
the adapter it self-have a dac & amp so all the sound process handled by the adapter
so if you pick it a bad one it will sound bad
https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_...sprefix=usb+c+to+3,aps,359&crid=2C6833WQKUZDR
Yes, I'm waffling on this whole removing the headphone port thing. Now you have some choice in the DAC you get and can change it if you don't like it, opens the market for some that actually care about good sound to make a good DAC dongle. I'm on the lookout for something to pair with my triplefi.
Also now the headphone port comes out the bottom of the phone where it belongs.

I agree, Googles will be the first choice, but a month and a half after releasing the phone for it to be available, it doesn't make sense.. Hence looking for a solution during that time..

In general I'm disappointed in USBC. This was supposed to be great but all these options are damn confusing. The connector is capable of so much but there is no standard to search for capabilities and compatibility.

Exactly my point.. Lets see
In 2020
When you want a new adapter or headset or charger or any usbC accessories then you can just buy the first thing you see in Amazon
BUT now you can't do that most of the usbC accessories don't follow the standard and could damage your device
The only option is to go for oem or certified accessories by oem
Major headphone companies like Beats, V-Moda etc. that have those exchangeable 3.5mm wires make wires that both are male 3.5mm and usb-c.

Cause I still have a premium functioning headphones that has those exchangeable 3.5mm that I bought 2 years ago. Don't want to shell out another $200+ for a bluetooth version and ending up with 2 headphones. And this way you don't have to carry that small adapter

If I could get a 2.5mm to USB C adapter like the one pictured above that worked with the Pixel 2 XL that would be the best of both worlds. I did some searching but was unable to find any, links?
You will have one when your device shows up. Their is one included.

The image above was found at Walmart. After reading an article about not to buy cheap usb-c, I'm kinda of hesitant to pull the trigger and get this. That's why I was hoping that the major headphone companies would invest making it instead.
I'd love to see something like this that can connect directly to my headphones with whatever it needs inline to connect to the Pixel 2. That would essentially solve any problems with existing headphones and would still only have the one cable to the phone.
Guess I can't post links yet but was trying to link NewFantasia Replacement Audio Upgrade Cable for Sennheiser HD598 / HD558 / HD518 Headphones 1.2meters/4feet on Amazon.
HTC U11 and Essential Adapter both confirmed working.
i have 2 of them from my Moto Z Force and will try them tomorrow. if it works then THESE would work which are Prime and 2 for $8
