does anyone know when a windows phone 7 will be comming out for verizon? Since April 15th for the trophy has passed is there another expected date? I've been holding out but can't wait much longer as my TP2 isn't doing well.
Is there any way I can put the Arrive on Verizon? I did this on my TP1 and it was a bit of a pain but worked. Is there any way to do something similar with the Arrive?
I HATE sprint and AT&T and really don't want to switch but I might be forced to for a few months until Verizon finally rollsout with WP7.
I basically asked the same question a couple weeks ago over at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1035713, and got the same number of replies that you've had so far.
get an iPhone while you wait, sell for profit if/when that wp7 device drops?

I was talking to a Verizon associate at one of those mall booths about a week ago, asking the same question. It was comical what I heard from this guy. He basically was unaware of WP7...completely oblivious to it. He was equating it to Windows Mobile and said they already had if the last 2 years. I tried to insert a "but" but I couldn't politely help him to know what WP7 is. So I nodded my head just long enough to make a dignified break away from the conversation and carry on about my business, never to ask that question again of a Verizon associate...lol.

I had a similar experience. First, I'd filled out a Verizon customer service questionnaire, and complained about WP7 not being out. Then a manager of a corporate store called me, took down my complaint, I told him dates of when the MS offer expired each time it was updated, and told him that I'd switched to Sprint because I wanted WP7 but was forced to switch back because I couldn't have a conversation without dropping the call. He said I may hear back from a district manager (I let him know that my issue isn't with a store, but corporate).
A week or two later, I was out and about, stopped at a non-corporate store, as it was the day that the latest rumor said the phone would be out. I asked about WP7, and one associate said "we don't have Windows Phones." I said, yes, you do - here's my Verizon Touch Pro 2 - but I want Windows Phone 7. They told me they aren't going to have one. I told them of the Trophy, and one associate went to look it up, and he said he didn't see it on "coming soon" so he's not sure what it is. I couldn't believe it. I would expect that the people selling the phones would know as much as I could find on the internet, but alas, I guess my expectations are too high.
I know it's no consolation given that we have no idea when it will come out on Verizon, but if it makes a difference to you, it looks like there will at least be a choice between two phones, not just the Trophy. Latest rumor says that HTC Pro7 is coming to VZW, but doesn't say when: http://bit.ly/dEKU5Z
I'd much rather have the HTC 7 pro since I've always had the WM's with keyboards but cant' be picky.
I'm betting June 30th will be the release date, becuase I believe thats the contract between Vzw and Microsoft. Its just a pain because everyday I feel forced to google verizon WP7 or verizon trophy to see if there's any news.

Welcome to my world.....it's only been 5 months now of doing that.... I'm about to give up and try AT&T for a while...that HD7s is going to be sweet (HD7 with a Super LCD display).
Latest word is May 5th (next week) for me it's VZW or the HD7s what ever comes first...sick of this bull****....
There is also the possibility that Verizon doesn't want MS phones. Seeing as how they took it up the back end on the Kin, I'd think they would be very pissed with MS.

Yes, all of my WM phones have had the slide-out as well, and you're not the only one googling VZW and WP7 every day. We should start a support group.
I don't know about June 30 - I haven't seen anything with that date, other than MS saying first half of 2011. I know I'm getting more disgruntled with VZW by the day, and surely don't want to wait that long. Unfortunately, they're the only ones who provide good enough coverage. I look out the window, across the parking lot to see my pastor standing outside the church so he can talk on his ATT phone. I'm just not willing to do that.

It's the other way around. Verizon screwed MS with the Kin by overcharging for the plans.

Hey everyone, need advice get an Evo now, I have a place to get one, or get a WP7 later and wait it out?
It's been tough seeing my sister with the Evo while I'm still running this old stuff but I'm waiting for WP7.
If you're like 90% of the people who have the evo, you'll be eligible for a full handset upgrade every year through sprint premier ($70/mnth+ on single line, or $100/mnth+ family line)
If I had a handset upgrade every year, I'd probably get the epic or evo. You can always arrange a trade with someone if you really want a WP7 before your next upgrade
I would just get the Evo, WP7 just shot itself in the foot lately. Instead of going forward their going backwards no tethering, no internet browser options. I could go on and on. Ill look around next month for a upgrade as well since my contract is up. I hate to leave windows mobile 6.5 but no more support for my i637 jack.
But then again, it might be about half a year befor sprint and verizon get WP7 as MS is currently looking to only support GSM first.

Honestly, when I put my Omnia II just running titanium up against the iphone and android...I don't really see it all that lacking. I think MS really misstepped by not releasing photon. I think an updated 6.5 version would have really stomped Android. I wonder how close they were to release.

It might have. But WP7 is still light years ahead of that. Who cares if it's missing a few features at launch that only "power users" really care about? I am extremely glad they took the course that they did. Photon was evolutionary, WP7 is revolutionary in terms of UI and platform. Would we have seen Silverlight and XNA (including Xbox Live) on Photon? no way. We'd still be using WinForms, maybe just slightly updated with some new controls and styling and gesture support. Ever since the Zune HD launched, many people were hoping Microsoft would make a phone based on that philosophy and that's what WP7 is. Metro is the ****.

That's where "jailbreaking" will probably come in.
Paperclips your starting to seem very apologetic for WP7, but I can understand why. People just don't want to like WP7, I think were part of the few.
But back on the subject at hand. Yes I'd say get the Evo 4g if your on sprint, because WP7 isn't coming to that carrier until mid 2011. IF your not on Sprint than try other carriers and them make your judgement off that.
How much of you folks truly do use tethering? And who just make another fuzz just because? I'm sure most of you fall into the latter category.
Anyone that needs mobile connectivity regularly would just get a 3G thumbstick anyway. They're cheap as ****, too.

That's not really a solution. I need a new SIM, a new contract, another device to carry with me at all times, I need to remember to pay for it, etc. If I used it daily I would maybe get it, but for occasional use it's just a hassle.

I wouldn't say apologetic. I'd say realistic. I just think that there is room for more than two operating systems as some people on this forum think. They view every consumer as a power user when it's far from true. Jailbreaking probably will happen but whenever I decide to buy a Windows Phone I'm not sure I will need to. I'm honestly waiting for one that has 4G for Verizon which probably won't come for the second half of next year. For the time being, I'm perfectly content with my Incredible.
I'd actually suggest that the OP buy the EVO if they're getting an upgrade next year anyway. By then there should be a great selection of 4G Windows phones if they so choose to go that way.

I'm on the old SERO plan from sprint and loath to lose it. I was planning on waiting until some winmo7 phones were out before deciding if i should jump ship, or at least upgrade to a new phone.
I found out that starting tomorrow sprint is going to be offering an upgrade option to sero users which will still be significantly cheaper then the regular plans, but allow me to use any phone they offer. I was strongly considering the EVO, or possibly the possibly the epic. Not sure if i prefer a bigger screen over a brighter screen with a keyboard or not.
Anyhow, i don't know much about winmo7. My current phone is winmo6.5 (touch pro 2) and i've installed a copy of android on it. Other then the glitches causes by running a hacked copy of android, i like android.
Just wondering what the opinions are here as far as the winmo7 operating system compared to android and what the hardware running winmo7 is going to look like compared to the epic or evo ?
thanks
so you already have the feel of the general look/feel of android through the use of the rom you have on your phone now. i suggest looking at pocketnow's videos on WP7 to make up your own mind.
http://pocketnow.com/tag/wp7-videos
This will help you get started with whether or not WP7 is to your liking, and whether you see it as something that can meet your expectations of what you would like in your next smartphone.
Of note, I was reading an article that has rumoured from Wallstreet Journal that AT&T will be the only carrier at launch to hold WP7 devices, so you may have to wait till Q1 2011 to get a device on any other US network. Or you could try and buy it outright if you can, and continue using your current plan.
WP7 isn't coming to sprint or verizon for another year or so. MS says 6 months, but I think its gonna be anywhere from 6-12 months.
http://blogs.computerworld.com/1698...ws_phone_7_launch_what_was_microsoft_thinking
So unless you can wait for WP7 to come on Sprint or switch carriers, it will be a long time before you own a device like that. By the end of october, the general public should have the final release of WP7 and by then you will have plenty of reviews comparing WP7 to Android, iOS, and a squirrel so you will have plenty of information to make a judgement.
of course Omni pretty much has his head up his butt with his guess, so ignore it. Microsoft has actually stated "First half of 2011, and that's being conservative"...so yeah, could be 6 months, could be less...could even be a lot less.
I'm probably going to go with the evo. Gonna see if i can find a local store that has the evo and epic in stock so i can compare them first.

I might not wait either. Looks like the price i thought the phones were selling for on ebay isn't any better then sprint - although at least i still avoid a 2 year contract. One phone i was bidding for on ebay sold for just about the same exact price as sprint. Then again - i'll also avoid sales tax on ebay. So - maybe it is worth the wait
scratch that - got lucky - just snagged one for $330. Used for 1 month but supposed to be in perfect condition and with all the misc that comes with it. Seems like a good deal to me since that's $100 cheaper then what i would have paid through sprint, and i dont have to extend my contract either.

Did you ever think that in what you just quoted, "conservative" can go either way? As in that's AT LEAST how long it will take? Everyone is pointing to and MS is alluding to mid 2011 release, which falls into the 6-12 month window I and other said.

Yeah, but i really wanted to stay on sprint because i'm on the old sero plan and NO ONE can beat $30/month for what i get. Hopefully the rumor that it's coming in Gingerbread is true.

I assume gingerbread is the next version/update to android? I'm not worried about firmware updates. Seems like there's enough hacking going on that I'll probably wind up installing a hacked rom anyhow, instead of the official version.
Still waiting to get the phone. Probably get it in the mail tomorrow or monday.
1) You can always install ROMs from XDA.
2) Android phones in general are updated faster than all other phones (iPhone, BB,...).
I spoke with a representative today at the Microsoft store and asked if he knew anything about the delay in update. He actually seemed suprisingly knowledgable considering most of their staff was half retarded hot chicks who couldnt tell the difference between a smartphone and a toaster. e informed me that one of the major causes behind the delay was the fact that they were having to do extensive bug fixes on the Venue Pro. To prevent fragmentation they're wanting to release the update all at once but they want to make sure everything runs right on all devices. Your thoughts?
I figure that if it was all the fault of getting it to work on one phone it would have leaked out prior to the guy at the MS Store knowing about it.
I highly doubt the staff at an MS Store know any details about the update and why it is delayed (if it is). When I purchased my Dell Venue Pro at an MS Store, I had to help the staff with the Tmobile activation/upgrade of my existing plan.

It's been a nice device for those of us who got the ones without issues... I know theres some unfortunate ones though...
Hey I got my DVP a few weeks ago from dell and it has been fantastic. The only issues I had were the ones that were specific to all WP7 devices. That said I returned it four days ago since I didn't realize I couldn't get insurance through T-Mo or dell for the phone. I'm not clumbsy but the extra 8.00 is worth the extra peice of mind.
Ironically I went to a T-Mo store later that evening to get my new HD7 and the rep bricked one during the bootloader right in front of me. He told that happens about the same occurance with all customers that have purchased ones from him. Apparently there has been a 50% failure rate at the stores he talked with during initial startup. So take that HD7

i didnt even know it was possible to brick an HD7. Im calling this a user error on his part. He must be trying to do something that causes them to break.
I doubt delays for update are about DVP, they're most likely CDMA radio support and driver issues so they can launch devices on Sprint and Verizon.
Somehow I doubt that a store employee who undoubtedly has multiple layers of higher management above him is privy to the schedules and decisions affecting the first WP7 update.
I am using the HTC trophy on Verizon. I went in to my local store and was asking about a charging cord (39.95 please), and i kid you not, the sales rep tried to get me to upgrade to an android phone. Im happy with my WP7, and have had android and didnt like it. So after telling the guy that i didnt need a new phone, i left. Now what upsets me is verizons lack of commitment to this OS. people want it, i want it, yet they only give you one phone (HTC trophy) with very low specs. My brother in law works for go wireless and his boss refuses to stock any WP& devices. And go wireless is essentially verizon. Thats is the companies stance on the OS. "no, no one wants that. Here, take one of these 45 android phones. They are way better. why? because they are android". Im so ****ing sick of all this verizon android basket. I dont want to switch to ATT to get a good device, but its making it look more and more probable with each passing day that verizon shafts the WP7 people. I know the kins didnt do so well, but thats verizons fault for requiring a data plan on a dumb phone. Point of my rant is this: i want something other than this trophy on verizon, yet they are making it so difficult to stay with them due to their constant hard on for android and their brief love affair with IOS. Another reason not to switch is i was grandfathered in to the unlimited data plan. Why must you make it so hard for me verizon!? I hate you, yet love your cell reception and unlimited data. Get more CDMA WP7 phones. How hard would it be to get that fujitsu number over here? not that hard i would assume. I would pay cash for that in a heart beat. Much like how i paid 400 some odd bucks the day the trophy came out for verizon.
/end rant
Amen, I feel the same way, if nothing is at least announced for Verizon by the end of 2011 I'll probably be going to AT&T because their phone line-up is better. It's a pity because I do like Verizon's service.
I'm not even asking for a new phone this year, I just want an announcement of a new phone. They're releasing so many Android phones per year, and they can't announce a new wp7 phone after half a year or so, it's kind of BS.
I emailed one of the higher ups at VW regarding this. I got an email and a call back from his assistant regarding my frustrations. Supposedly there will be new WP devices coming, but they wouldn't give a time frame.
Rumor on the net through a couple Nokia sites say that Verizon will be getting a high end Nokia WP, while AT&Crap and T-Mobile will be getting mid tier devices. I'm personally over HTC's battery life issues so I'm optimistic something better will be coming so I can finally make the switch from Android.
Do yourself a favour, if you see what you like on another carrier (at&t, Titan, Focus S, Focus Flash), check out the coverage and prices as best you can and if everything looks ok switch! Why sit around on a carrier that doesnt give you what you want, whether it be CS, coverage or the device you desire? Buy a prepaid phone, use it to confirm you will have coverage and if its a go make sure to tell vzw just why you are switching. Spread the word about your experience, and maybe in 10 years time they will pull their heads out of google's butt!!
That's probably because Verizon is Google's favorite carrier and gets more from Google than other carrieres do, just like Motorola will now be favored over other OEMs.
the deathstars cell service is awful where I live. Calls are always dropped, and the data plan is horrendous. If it weren't for those two things, I would have switched long ago. The only thing really keeping me with big red is the aforementioned unlimited data.

Regardless of what platform he personally prefers, in the end, he wants to make money, and he wants you to upgrade right then and there, and there isn't another WP7 device for him to offer you... what else is he supposed to do? lol
As a sales rep myself, I would attempt to figure out what you want, and get you the device that suits you the best. I'm no Android fan, but if I find out that you like Android, there is little reason for me to try and get you to buy into a completely different platform, no matter how awesome it is. Since you have the only WP7 device on Verizon, there isn't much else he could have done except tell you to buy into a different platform.
But the general idea of your topic, I understand, and its most certainly saddening to see how the market treats underdogs (not only Verizon). Though, I think you'll find that once the dollar signs start shifting toward WP7, the tune of most sales reps will also shift. They go where the money goes.
But when the rep tells me WP7 sucks like its fact and not opinion, that's when I tune out. And its sad because I feel that his behavior reflects on veizons opinion of WP7 in general besides, how are you gonna make tons of cash on a phone OS when you only have one model that supports it? Of course your gonna make a boatload of money if you have 19 phones that all have android on them

I agree in general that VZW has little to no interest or support for WP7 and hopefully this changes with time as I too have little choice for good reception and am grandfathered on the unlimited data.
Google, Motorola, and Verzon are The Three Stooges. I'm suprised so many people here seem to have missed that...

Expecting a salesperson to backup an all but discontinued device (because you like it) is a second setup to fail.
Continuing to support that company month to month is the third setup for fail.
Vote with your money, and enjoy the device you want instead = win ?
Seems like the fowl taste WM and the Kin left in VWs mouth hasn't left pitty.

...then Verizon should've been smart and got the HD2 instead of the Kin !
Ok ohgood, let me clarify a few things:
1. I was looking at charging cables. Its not like I ran in, brow sweaty demanding a cable and willing to pay any price.
2.funny how a device that's Been out since early summer is considered "discontinued". Only reason it is could be because VZW deemed it so. Way to give it a chance.
3.maybe you should read why I'm sticking with VZW (great cell service and grandfathered into unlimited data). I'm sure I mentioned it above. Let me check...yep. I did.
So it's hard to vote with ones wallet when my other choice is a cell carrier that drops calls or gets no service in my area all together. Heaven forbid I would like to get a phone that isn't based on specs from a year ago. So, my point still stands. Google might as well buy VZW so they can just outright say "all android, all the time"

Oh and to add a point, I wasn't seeking an upgrade. I was just browsing, curious about data cables or whathaveyou, and when making small talk, he saw the phone and started off on "the facts" about why WP7 is awful. So he wasn't trying to find my needs. And I get they follow the money, but as I previously stated, of course your gonna make more money on an OS that has a carrier branded tv and radio spot, not to mention the wall sized posters of android phones in store. Yet every vzw store I've been to had the trophy for 2 weeks in a corner of the store where no one would see it. /end rebuttal

Yes, I read that about lack of quality cellular service, its familiar to me. He's just using sales tactics that usually work for him, or possibly pointing out reasons other customers have cited for moving to iphone4. Prolly gets him a contract renewal or sale 9/10.
Thing is, no matter how uninterested you are in their hardware choices, you're supporting them month to month.

You're a good sales rep. Honestly. My last experience with a rep at a VW store went more or less as follows. I walk into the store just to look around because I had time to kill. The rep walks up and asks me what phone I have. I tell him a Focus and that I am on AT&T and am not interested in buying anything, I was just browsing. He proceeds to tell me that my phone's OS isn't any good, and that AT&T sucks (I can't really argue very much with that, though) -- I should switch to VW and get a Droid because they are the best phones available on the market. I asked him if he had ever used a WP7 -- he hadn't, of course. That conversation ended right there and I asked him to show me a Moto Xoom, which is another story.
I have two bones to pick, one with MS, and one with Carriers:
First, MS promised small intermittent updates, and major updates at least once a year. For the most part they have delivered, in theory. We saw Mango around October of last year. Woohoo, it was great, started to fill the gap, but still left us wanting. We all eagerly anticipated what MS had up its sleeve next.
The same month they release a fitly update, 7.10.7740.16, that didn't really do much of anything, low and behold, ATT never rolled that one out....go figure....
There was a massive keyboard disappearing bug (which I never experienced thank god), that it took them 3 months to fix with 7.10.8107.79. Luckily this fixed my gmail sync issue, so that was nice. LTE support is a bonus, if you happen to be in one of the few areas ATT has such a service, no luck for me though. Again, ATT didn't bother with this one, so I had to manually push it.
We start finally hearing some details about Tango in March. Come to find out, its really just an MS push into emerging markets, and really won't add anything new except for some additional SMS capabilities. This update starts to roll out in June. If it were up to ATT, i would still be running 7720, a full three versions, and 9 months old. Not with the help of XDA though....
Its not that I really need the updates, again, they don't really do anything, the change log list is either incredibly omissive or simply childish in length. its the principle. You promised me updates, I want them dammit! And I want them now! Preferably with some actual updates....that is....How about MS and Nokia get together and work towards fixing this shoddy camera quality you shipped the Lumia with??? People might actually appreciate that work....
Now to WP8. MS totally screws us with this, as all we are ending up getting is an ugly home screen update....Thanks a lot, my 3 month old Lumia salutes you, as does its infantile ATT 2 year contract. But you stuck with your promise, a major update once a year. Looks like we will be seeing Apollo around when Mango was shipped last year. Guess we can't argue with that logic...
Could be worse I suppose. I could have an Android device with a 9 month and standing promise to update to ICS.....o that's right....that's exactly what I have with ATT.....bah humbug....except ATT hasn't actually promised any updates at all, and customers will probably never see Tango. At least we can look on the bright side, the updates don't actually do anything anyway, so no harm no foul, right?
Anyway, in a total of the 9 months since MS officially released Mango, we have gotten 3 quasi-widely pushed updates, so long as you are not an ATT customer that is (ok MS seems to be doing what they promised), however, in said time, the only real additions were two bug fixes and some SMS bull. 9 months in the making.....really??? Granted they must be spending a lot of resources on WP8, and its great that they are developing the platform and pushing it further, but how does that help me???? Absolutely in no way shape or form.
For comparison (and simply that) ICS was released right along with Mango, and they have rolled out three updates (unlike MS these actually did things and improved the OS substantially), and are now on a major refresh after 9 months, Jelly Bean. My comparison ends there.....
And what about the Carriers??? I took me a total of 10 minutes a piece to deliver myself each of the updates we have gotten our hands on here. WTF are the carriers doing with my money??? Surely not expanding its LTE network, and surely not building new towers so I can actually get a bar or two at work....god forbid...
Androids Carrier/OEM problem is probably even worse than what I have seen from ATT and MS, and Apples updates seems to break more than they fix, but I really feel like MS has kicked us to the curb not only with promised updates, but also with the WP8 announcement.
/end rant
I will stick with MS, and will probably use my wife's upgrade to deliver me a WP8 phone late this year, simply because there is no better options. What OEMs do to Android should be a crime, and I cant bring myself to support the tyrant that is Apple, nor jump on its fanboy bandwagon. WP is truly a superior product, even if it still lacks a few bells and whistles. Anyone who actually cares about their experience cannot deny that.
But seriously MS, you are letting us down. Its because of people like me that this thing is still afloat, and you are treating me like a red headed step child. Get with it already!
If you are still with me, thanks for reading, hope to see any thoughtful comments offered.

Lucky you.
First gen here. I experience that bug every day and MSFT/AT&T still haven't pushed the update for it.
Still on 7720.

More like AT&T rather than MS, I've had 8107 on my TMOUS HD7 since like February.
At&t is supposedly starting to roll out Tango on some of their Windows Phones.
As far as you just getting your Lumia goes, I wish Nokia and/or Microsoft would implement some trade-up program. That way everybody (users and developers) can get onto 8 almost right away while eliminating the complaining and uncertainty that now exists.
I thought M/$ said carriers could not skip more than 1 update....
Guess AT&T did not get or agree with that memo...
The way I see it blame falls on the AT&T death star.

yes ATT has been horrible, but what can one do that really matters? Verizon I have heard hasn't been much better - they are used to A. Apple pushing its own updates, and letting them have their way, and B. not giving a **** about Android updates, because it takes OEMS 9 months to "refresh" their skins.

Nokia lost and arm and a leg giving away the Lumia for $100, and then for free, not so sure they could survive another such Apocalypse only a few months later.

if that is the case, there was probably verbiage in there delineating the option to only major rehashes - but seriously, the Carriers have nothing to do, just push it?!?!?!

Do you have to use the word "end" if you're already using a forward slash to close the "rant" tag? Just wondering
no clue, I am a biochemist, not a computer programmer
The AT&T death star has already gotten the $$ from the sale of the phones. Updates do not create income so it is low on the radar. Besides death stars only want to deal with planets.

well they didn't make **** off my phone sale, now aside from that stupid contract price I pay every month....
