Dell Venue Pro the cause of update delays? - Windows Phone 7 General

I spoke with a representative today at the Microsoft store and asked if he knew anything about the delay in update. He actually seemed suprisingly knowledgable considering most of their staff was half retarded hot chicks who couldnt tell the difference between a smartphone and a toaster. e informed me that one of the major causes behind the delay was the fact that they were having to do extensive bug fixes on the Venue Pro. To prevent fragmentation they're wanting to release the update all at once but they want to make sure everything runs right on all devices. Your thoughts?

I figure that if it was all the fault of getting it to work on one phone it would have leaked out prior to the guy at the MS Store knowing about it.

I highly doubt the staff at an MS Store know any details about the update and why it is delayed (if it is). When I purchased my Dell Venue Pro at an MS Store, I had to help the staff with the Tmobile activation/upgrade of my existing plan.

As stated I'm the first to agree with their general stupidity... However there was definitely conviction when he said it...

SO
WOULD
NOT
SURPRISE
ME
Heck their registry anything barely works at all! let alone anything else!

So they're holding back our update because of that piece of junk...aint that a b....

Well, as long as it will be worth it. I hope MS makes the update worth the wait... but knowing them, probably not.

haha sorry. But you gotta admit the damn thing has been nothing but trouble. I was considering testing out the HD7 and DVP on launch day but the DVP wasn't even available so I said screw it and come launch day I just got my HD7. Plus all the bugs and crap. Damn thing just found another way to screw me

It's been a nice device for those of us who got the ones without issues... I know theres some unfortunate ones though...

Hey I got my DVP a few weeks ago from dell and it has been fantastic. The only issues I had were the ones that were specific to all WP7 devices. That said I returned it four days ago since I didn't realize I couldn't get insurance through T-Mo or dell for the phone. I'm not clumbsy but the extra 8.00 is worth the extra peice of mind.
Ironically I went to a T-Mo store later that evening to get my new HD7 and the rep bricked one during the bootloader right in front of me. He told that happens about the same occurance with all customers that have purchased ones from him. Apparently there has been a 50% failure rate at the stores he talked with during initial startup. So take that HD7
I like my new HD7 with insurance but I loved my DVP while I had it.

i didnt even know it was possible to brick an HD7. Im calling this a user error on his part. He must be trying to do something that causes them to break.

I doubt delays for update are about DVP, they're most likely CDMA radio support and driver issues so they can launch devices on Sprint and Verizon.

Somehow I doubt that a store employee who undoubtedly has multiple layers of higher management above him is privy to the schedules and decisions affecting the first WP7 update.

Pissed off at Sprint and HTC...they just ordered me a 4th EVO replacement...

They keep giving me "reconditioned" Evos. Basically, everything is new on it, except for the main board.
First Evo - Started to reboot on it's own. Sprint repair center ordered "reconditioned" Evo. Was on backorder, had to wait about 3-4 days.
Second Evo - USB charging issue along w/ light leak on the outsides of the screen. Ordered "reconditioned" Evo.
Third Evo - Hotspots on the screen as soon as I turned it on in the Sprint store. They tried to change out the screen, but it seems more like a main board issue since it did the same thing on the new screen. Told me they ordered another "reconditioned" Evo. It's on backorder again, so might be a week or two.
Yesterday morning I called up Sprint and *****ed at anyone that I could get on the phone. Told them I WANT a new phone...not a "new to me" phone, but a BRAND NEW phone. Told them I don't want to hear "I'm sorry" or "I understand your frustration" because it's quite apparent that they don't.
Finally getting it escalated to within corporate after threatening the CSR level employess (including their sups) that I've filed a complaint with BBB and have dispatched an email to corporate executives at the company. Funny how much they want to take care of you once you say that. Waiting on call back from someone at Corporate.
Had a ***** this morning tell me "Maybe it was a virus you keep downloading."....No *****, it's a HARDWARE issue. HTC QA dept. seems to have been taken off the lines and told to go to accounting so they can help them count their cash.
I got a call this morning from a senior manager (directly from my email) and the guy turned out to be a complete douche. He wasn't very interested in what I had to say. He just told me that he has to follow his procedure and that if my FOURTH one has an issue, we'll look at other options. I asked him if the other options includes a new phone and he said we'll cross that bridge when we get there. Completely douchebaggery out of this ahole's mouth. I asked him how he thought having a 4th phone in my hands within a 2-3 week time frame was acceptable. All he said was he understands
I'm honestly thinking of paying out the cancellation fees and running from Sprint at this point.
just be glad they are sending you replacement phones.
Oh God here we go again.
Leaving Sprint?! Do you seriously think AT&T, Verizon or T-mobile would have given you a new phone ? The truth is a reconditioned phone IS just as good as a new phone.
Anyway cool story bro.

I do agree with that, however when I moved from my iPhone to the Evo, I never had such issues w/ Apple. I walked into the Apple store and always walked out as a happy customer. I just hated AT&T.
Now that the iPhone is coming to Verizon, I know I lose a lot from features point of view, but at least I know that customer service is behind me from Apple. You can hate Apple as much as you want, but you can't deny their customer service in their stores is 2nd to none.
Either way, I refuse any other phone from Sprint since I made the move because I wanted the Evo. I love the Evo, hence why I want a new one and get all this foolishness over with.

You're right about Apple. Last time I had an issue with a macbook (the HD was corrupt after a month of use) I brought it in and they were going to replace it but it was going to take a week or so. I needed my comp back for my school work (was in college) and they gave me a brand new macbook there and then. No questions asked.
I would recommend reading the book How to win Friends and Influence people.
If you want a brands new phone, the only way to get a brand new phone is to get the person you are talking to to WANT to give you a brand new phone. To do that, you need to learn what they WANT. As a CS rep, I want people to tell my boss how great I am and the company will fold without me. When I need something from someone I say this "Shiela, you are the only one that can help me here." explain the situation and tell her what I am looking for and end with "and please give me the name of your supervisor so I can contact them directly and let them know how you not only kept me as a customer, but made me completely satisfied. WHen I called I was angry at your company, and Shiela singlehandedly changed that.
Bottom line, you get WAY more bees with honey.

Apple does have great customer service, there is no denying that whatsoever. But, if you are so disgruntled by your experiences with the Evo why don't you just go back to the iPhone? Or it may just be a good idea to not bring up apple and the iPhone on the Evo forums, I promise its only going to get you flamed.

This guy knows his stuff and is right no matter how you slice it. I went through the same issues with light leakage and screen coming up in the corner. I had Sprint send me 3 replacements before I realized that EVERY Evo is going to have a slight bit of light leakage. Light leakage is something that happens eventually anyways with any touchscreen device. Take a look at a used Ipod touch, I have seen it on many different touch's. As for the difference in new and refurb MOST of the time a refurb is actually better because the phone goes through alot more inspection and tests then a brand new one.

Sounds like bad experiences with the replacements which is very understandable. If I were in your shoes I would probably demand a new phone too, while keeping in mind that even if its new it is still going to have light leakage. From my experiences with Sprint, if you want to get something done you have to talk to Retention or Customer Relations. Not too sure what they call it now but it is basically the people who handle customers wanting to cancel their service with Sprint. Every time I have had a problem with customer service getting things done, I have just requested to talk to them. They will bend over backwards for you to keep you as a customer, as long as your respectful to them. This would be my recommendation to you from my experience, because they are the ultimate power for Customer service for Sprint. They can do alot of things and override stuff that other reps cannot.

Only reason I brought up Apple is due to their CS. I know their phone doesn't measure up, but after getting kicked in the nuts a few times, you want to give that part a rest and get kicked somewhere else.

Light leakage doesn't worry me too much. I haven't returned a phone or complained about a phone only due to light leakage. There has always been something else hardware wise wrong along with that.

I tried the retentions dept. They basically offered me a LG Rumor or a Blackberry Curve for $50. They said they can do nothing more if I want to cancel.
There is another member going through this same issue. The rule a thumb and apparently in the fine print somewhere it does say after 3 replacements that they have to offer you a new phone. I have actually dealt with this before and after 3 was given a new phone just didn't realize it was in fine print. But apparently it is in policy so I would bring that up to a rep if I were you.

Same thing happened to me worth my last phone the palm pre, I had 10 of em in 6 months. After the 4rth one I demanded a new one, they reluctantly gave me one, unfortunately that one failed in less than two weeks
After playing who's your favorite customer for a few more months the, evo dropped so palm could finally kiss my a$$.
It sucks your having those problems, my phone hasnt had any problem and (knock on wood) have had it for going on 6 months now
Swyped from a galaxy far far away......

I am also on my 3rd replacement phone.
The original- Speaker went out
First replacement- Screen hotspot
Second replacement- Light leakage (i had to complain and yell to get this one replaced)
Third replacement (current phone)- light leakage
I have given up with this third replacement!
O and by the way....
From what information I have gathered from Sprint and HTC, light leakage is NOT a known issue according to them. I specifically talked to the HTC warranty department and they said it has shown up on some phones but is not previlent enough to say it is a known issue with the phone
Not sure if this will work for your state but I know it works in NY.
If you had 4 Evo replacements, call customer service and ask for a supervisor. It should be documented on your account that you got 4 replacements. Tell them under your state's lemon law, you got more than 3 faulty refurbished Evos within 3 months. You want a NIB (New in box) Evo sent. Or you can ask for a comparable phone if you want to switch off the Evo. They will probably give you the choice of the Epic or Evo Shift.
They will push for the same phone. The stores will not do this for you. You have to call customer service. If customer service doesn't do it for you, ask to be transfered to retentions (cancellation department) and ask for a supervisor there. They have the power to give you anything you want, though you might not get it.
If no one is cooperating, hang up before they can note your account and call back. Most of the time it depends on whether the person wants to help you or not. Let them know you are frustrated but don't act like an ass.

They tried to tell me "It's a non-issue, it's only cosmetic."
While I understand that it is only cosmetic, if I'm buying the Ferrari of all phone (HTC and Sprint market it as the best on the market), then I don't want even a scratch on my Ferrari. If I paid good money for it, I want my good money's worth and I demand that it be perfect.
There may be those who may say "Give it up, it's just the way the phone is.". To them, I say at what point in your life did you give up wanting your money's worth? At what point did you say to yourself a BRAND NEW item should be of garbage quality as long as it's in new packaging?

wp7 verizon, or sprint arrive to verizon

does anyone know when a windows phone 7 will be comming out for verizon? Since April 15th for the trophy has passed is there another expected date? I've been holding out but can't wait much longer as my TP2 isn't doing well.
Is there any way I can put the Arrive on Verizon? I did this on my TP1 and it was a bit of a pain but worked. Is there any way to do something similar with the Arrive?
I HATE sprint and AT&T and really don't want to switch but I might be forced to for a few months until Verizon finally rollsout with WP7.

I was talking to a Verizon associate at one of those mall booths about a week ago, asking the same question. It was comical what I heard from this guy. He basically was unaware of WP7...completely oblivious to it. He was equating it to Windows Mobile and said they already had if the last 2 years. I tried to insert a "but" but I couldn't politely help him to know what WP7 is. So I nodded my head just long enough to make a dignified break away from the conversation and carry on about my business, never to ask that question again of a Verizon associate...lol.

I had a similar experience. First, I'd filled out a Verizon customer service questionnaire, and complained about WP7 not being out. Then a manager of a corporate store called me, took down my complaint, I told him dates of when the MS offer expired each time it was updated, and told him that I'd switched to Sprint because I wanted WP7 but was forced to switch back because I couldn't have a conversation without dropping the call. He said I may hear back from a district manager (I let him know that my issue isn't with a store, but corporate).
A week or two later, I was out and about, stopped at a non-corporate store, as it was the day that the latest rumor said the phone would be out. I asked about WP7, and one associate said "we don't have Windows Phones." I said, yes, you do - here's my Verizon Touch Pro 2 - but I want Windows Phone 7. They told me they aren't going to have one. I told them of the Trophy, and one associate went to look it up, and he said he didn't see it on "coming soon" so he's not sure what it is. I couldn't believe it. I would expect that the people selling the phones would know as much as I could find on the internet, but alas, I guess my expectations are too high.
I know it's no consolation given that we have no idea when it will come out on Verizon, but if it makes a difference to you, it looks like there will at least be a choice between two phones, not just the Trophy. Latest rumor says that HTC Pro7 is coming to VZW, but doesn't say when: http://bit.ly/dEKU5Z
I'd much rather have the HTC 7 pro since I've always had the WM's with keyboards but cant' be picky.
I'm betting June 30th will be the release date, becuase I believe thats the contract between Vzw and Microsoft. Its just a pain because everyday I feel forced to google verizon WP7 or verizon trophy to see if there's any news.

There is also the possibility that Verizon doesn't want MS phones. Seeing as how they took it up the back end on the Kin, I'd think they would be very pissed with MS.

Yes, all of my WM phones have had the slide-out as well, and you're not the only one googling VZW and WP7 every day. We should start a support group.
I don't know about June 30 - I haven't seen anything with that date, other than MS saying first half of 2011. I know I'm getting more disgruntled with VZW by the day, and surely don't want to wait that long. Unfortunately, they're the only ones who provide good enough coverage. I look out the window, across the parking lot to see my pastor standing outside the church so he can talk on his ATT phone. I'm just not willing to do that.

It's the other way around. Verizon screwed MS with the Kin by overcharging for the plans.

Talked to a cell phone rep... wasn't encouraging

My wife and I were at the mall today and I went into a Rogers store (Canadian cell provider), and was comparing the Focus to my Quantum.
A sales monkey came over to see if I needed help and we started chatting. I asked him if the wp7's had been selling he kinda laughed nervously and said he hasn't seen a rep sell one yet. He mentioned that one concern is the lack of multi-tasking. I kinda find that hard to believe. That used to be the rallying cry of all anti-apple people, yet they sold like crazy. And I've yet to see one 'in the wild'. Anecdotal I know, but kinda disappointing. I think it's a fantastic OS, I thought more people would be into it.
Many people are into it.
The sales man is only a sales man. He only wants to sell you what ever he thinks he can make money off.
As it stands the multitasking functionality is about the same as the iphone, but with MANGO on its way, that will be fixed.
Don't worry, generally sales rep don't know what they are talking about, they just know the basic/general stuffs.
If I'm the sales officer,I would not reckon this device to any customer, until 2nd gen of devices or mango are released.
@FooisM, most of the consumers not even know what is WP7,so,whats the point telling them about Mango?lol....
@JC_agga, yea true, they just know basic and general stuffs, that is what ordinary or normal customers want.

Not around here sadly. From the few stores around my place, if you don't have an Iphone, that makes you an idiot to them.
To be fair even after all the debacle i've been through with my Omnia 7 I would still reccomend WP7. The OS is just fantastic.
Samsung phones however... I will not reccomend!

Agree perfectly!!!!!! OS brilliant! Samsung has let me downnnnn hardware problems to often!
I love my sammy Focus. When I went to the ATT store to get my wife the same phone, the salesman said good things about the phone, asked me about my experience. I didn't get any anti-wp7 vibe from my att store, but ymmv. By the time I decide to make a purchase, I find that I generally know a lot more about the items than the saleperson. Not always, not generally so.

In Portugal when I went to buy my Omnia 7in January the salesguy had a Mozart and he loved it, almost forced me into WP7.. LOL
No regrets about the OS nor about Samsung... My Omnia is running 7392 always officially updated and no problems so far...
Yeah, I don't know why ppl complain about Samsung. I think they're a great hardware company and I'm very happy with my Omnia 7. Before I had a Samsung Wave with bada, and it was nice too !! No problems at all !!
I didn't have any problems with the update on the Omnia 7 as well.
Well, if he is a cell phone salesman he is either very young probably not very knowledgeable or if older probably made a lot of mistakes in life to end up at that point.... In either event I wouldn't worry about it. Just enjoy your phone and rock on.

LOL that's horrible!
isn't this like letting a car sales man telling you what to buy? If you're going to lay down 500$ you better do your research before walking into any store (or you deserve what you get).

So... Anyone went ahead and bought a Lumia 800 today?

I'm tempted just because I'm up for an upgrade but I probably won't bother yet.
thanks to nokia excellent marketing, i was also tempted, but then i realised that it just isnt worth it, not for me anyway. i have an omnia 7, and although it has twice the memory and is 400mhz faster, it still hardly he 2nd gen phone i am looking for, even worse, it STILL dosnt have a front facing camera. shameful for a 2nd gen device, especially with skype coming around..... tut tut nokia, although the marketing for it has been excellent and i hope it does really well! but i wont be conned a second time around....
i would have bought it right now if i could move my sms.
No.. I have no money

Maybe we gotta harass the smart folks over in the hacking forum. Seems like it'd be fairly simple to dump/load SMS in homebrew.
i won 1 last week from a dutch tech-website.
have been using it for a week now
Used to have the omnia 7 and i'm still getting used to the smaller display of the Lumia
Turns out Vodafone won't let me early upgrade until the twenty-somethingth, but as I'm still sitting on the fence it will very much depend on how much they value my loyalty (and how much they want to compensate me for perpetually screwing up my bills, because I'm on a price plan that doesn't exist???)
You've got to hand it to Nokia though, they've done a damn good job especially with the advertising, this is EXACTLY what Windows Phone needs. This must have cost them a fair whack though:

Right in the middle of the Bullring in Birmingham...as well as prime positioning in Phones4U and a really very comprehensive campaign.
EDIT: Had I taken that shot from the other side of the centre, you could see it's right outside the Vodafone store, and the two O2 stores, although obviously anything that isn't an iPhone or Blackberry is beyond the comprehension of the O2 store employees...
i bought mine today but not in a shop rather over the phone it is currently in the ukmail depot and will be with me in 8-12 hours
These wave of phones are probably skippable if you have the first gen or you are not locked into a contract.

all nokia windows phone have an integrated "contat transfer" program for transfer contacts from symbian to windows phone via bluetooth
btw, the only reason for not buying a nokia lumia is the missing frontal cam IMHO.

That's still not a solution for what he wants, not sure why you answered that.
Oh and also a bigger screen is a good reason for not buying this phone, although that's not the debate here.
You know I was going to get an int'l model but I'll wait for the American version. By then the camera issues should have a firmware update and some maturation would've occurred. Elop keeps saying americans would get a different experience. If it involves FFC I'm sold. Period.
So can anyone confirm or deny if it is indeed "Funner", and if so, what on earth that means?!!
Some of the crap that comes out of marketing astounds me!
More seriously, it seems like a really nice phone from having played with it in store, but the small screen, and lack of FFC kill it for me. Hopefully they will pull their finger out and release something akin to the Ace specs that were leaked a while back.
I have had a play with one in store and I am sure this phone will appeal to the youngsters, it looks absolutely beautiful, but for me, at my age, the screen is too small, I will stick with my Titan until Nokia come out with a bigger phone. I really hope the lumia range is successful for the sake of wp7.
CAn you let me know where you got it? I am looking for an unlocked/unbranded devisce but none that i can see so far.
Thanks.
You can buy it unlocked sim-free at Phones4u for £400, how I got it, or at Carphone Warehouse for £470.
Thanks, just talked to rep from phones4u and they sais they only sell PAYG. No good for me. Checked their site and they seem to have the phone there as you say SIM free. I was going to place order now Im not sure as they stated at the side of the site that they prepare all SIM phones to be ready.
As you have one from them can you confirm that it is indeed SIM free and totally unbranded from Phones4U? if it is I will order one right now

MS + Carrier Woes :(

I have two bones to pick, one with MS, and one with Carriers:
First, MS promised small intermittent updates, and major updates at least once a year. For the most part they have delivered, in theory. We saw Mango around October of last year. Woohoo, it was great, started to fill the gap, but still left us wanting. We all eagerly anticipated what MS had up its sleeve next.
The same month they release a fitly update, 7.10.7740.16, that didn't really do much of anything, low and behold, ATT never rolled that one out....go figure....
There was a massive keyboard disappearing bug (which I never experienced thank god), that it took them 3 months to fix with 7.10.8107.79. Luckily this fixed my gmail sync issue, so that was nice. LTE support is a bonus, if you happen to be in one of the few areas ATT has such a service, no luck for me though. Again, ATT didn't bother with this one, so I had to manually push it.
We start finally hearing some details about Tango in March. Come to find out, its really just an MS push into emerging markets, and really won't add anything new except for some additional SMS capabilities. This update starts to roll out in June. If it were up to ATT, i would still be running 7720, a full three versions, and 9 months old. Not with the help of XDA though....
Its not that I really need the updates, again, they don't really do anything, the change log list is either incredibly omissive or simply childish in length. its the principle. You promised me updates, I want them dammit! And I want them now! Preferably with some actual updates....that is....How about MS and Nokia get together and work towards fixing this shoddy camera quality you shipped the Lumia with??? People might actually appreciate that work....
Now to WP8. MS totally screws us with this, as all we are ending up getting is an ugly home screen update....Thanks a lot, my 3 month old Lumia salutes you, as does its infantile ATT 2 year contract. But you stuck with your promise, a major update once a year. Looks like we will be seeing Apollo around when Mango was shipped last year. Guess we can't argue with that logic...
Could be worse I suppose. I could have an Android device with a 9 month and standing promise to update to ICS.....o that's right....that's exactly what I have with ATT.....bah humbug....except ATT hasn't actually promised any updates at all, and customers will probably never see Tango. At least we can look on the bright side, the updates don't actually do anything anyway, so no harm no foul, right?
Anyway, in a total of the 9 months since MS officially released Mango, we have gotten 3 quasi-widely pushed updates, so long as you are not an ATT customer that is (ok MS seems to be doing what they promised), however, in said time, the only real additions were two bug fixes and some SMS bull. 9 months in the making.....really??? Granted they must be spending a lot of resources on WP8, and its great that they are developing the platform and pushing it further, but how does that help me???? Absolutely in no way shape or form.
For comparison (and simply that) ICS was released right along with Mango, and they have rolled out three updates (unlike MS these actually did things and improved the OS substantially), and are now on a major refresh after 9 months, Jelly Bean. My comparison ends there.....
And what about the Carriers??? I took me a total of 10 minutes a piece to deliver myself each of the updates we have gotten our hands on here. WTF are the carriers doing with my money??? Surely not expanding its LTE network, and surely not building new towers so I can actually get a bar or two at work....god forbid...
Androids Carrier/OEM problem is probably even worse than what I have seen from ATT and MS, and Apples updates seems to break more than they fix, but I really feel like MS has kicked us to the curb not only with promised updates, but also with the WP8 announcement.
/end rant
I will stick with MS, and will probably use my wife's upgrade to deliver me a WP8 phone late this year, simply because there is no better options. What OEMs do to Android should be a crime, and I cant bring myself to support the tyrant that is Apple, nor jump on its fanboy bandwagon. WP is truly a superior product, even if it still lacks a few bells and whistles. Anyone who actually cares about their experience cannot deny that.
But seriously MS, you are letting us down. Its because of people like me that this thing is still afloat, and you are treating me like a red headed step child. Get with it already!
If you are still with me, thanks for reading, hope to see any thoughtful comments offered.

Lucky you.
First gen here. I experience that bug every day and MSFT/AT&T still haven't pushed the update for it.
Still on 7720.

More like AT&T rather than MS, I've had 8107 on my TMOUS HD7 since like February.
At&t is supposedly starting to roll out Tango on some of their Windows Phones.
As far as you just getting your Lumia goes, I wish Nokia and/or Microsoft would implement some trade-up program. That way everybody (users and developers) can get onto 8 almost right away while eliminating the complaining and uncertainty that now exists.
I thought M/$ said carriers could not skip more than 1 update....
Guess AT&T did not get or agree with that memo...
The way I see it blame falls on the AT&T death star.

yes ATT has been horrible, but what can one do that really matters? Verizon I have heard hasn't been much better - they are used to A. Apple pushing its own updates, and letting them have their way, and B. not giving a **** about Android updates, because it takes OEMS 9 months to "refresh" their skins.

Nokia lost and arm and a leg giving away the Lumia for $100, and then for free, not so sure they could survive another such Apocalypse only a few months later.

if that is the case, there was probably verbiage in there delineating the option to only major rehashes - but seriously, the Carriers have nothing to do, just push it?!?!?!

Do you have to use the word "end" if you're already using a forward slash to close the "rant" tag? Just wondering
no clue, I am a biochemist, not a computer programmer
The AT&T death star has already gotten the $$ from the sale of the phones. Updates do not create income so it is low on the radar. Besides death stars only want to deal with planets.

well they didn't make **** off my phone sale, now aside from that stupid contract price I pay every month....
