[Q] Just got HTC Evo 4g, root ?? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I new the trying to root my htc evo 4g i just got from sprint. I`m looking at using unrEVOked 3.21 since i have a macbook pro. I was just wondering if it will delete anything off my phone, it says no data wiping. And what does full nand unlock do? Also, It says it flashes a custom recovery rom too, will this change the operating system thats on it now or just the recovery & will the phone stay like it is now until i flash a custom rom to it? Thanx for the help, I`ve been hacking iphones since they came out & now I`m switching to the evo

It will not erase anything or change the ROM that's on there. Your phone will be exactly the same, except it will be rooted.
You need full nand unlock to be able to do most things, so this is a good thing.
Custom recovery is where you go to make backups, and flash ROMs/Kernels/Mods. It's completely separate from the ROM.
Edit: Welcome! Glad you got rid of that icrap . Had an iphone 4 for a few weeks. Nice phones, but no comparison.

thanx for the help, I`m gonna try to root it later on. It should work since i have the newset software i hope? android 2.2, baseband 2.15.00.11.19, kernel 2.6.32.17-gee557fd, build 3.70.651.1, PRI 1.90_003, PRL 60677.I have alot to learn. LOL Yeah, I love the evo, its way nicer than the iphone 4, i cant quit playing with it. just wish u could get the paid apps for free too. I can`t wait for the evo 3d

Read through these threads for some good beginner info. These are all stickied to the top of the forums in the Evo section if you ever need them again:

Welcome to XDA, btw.

rooting the evo is a piece of easy pie.
i used unrEVOked, its a little quirky for me but it roots, basically one click. have fun. delete htclockscreen.apk(.odex) for the vanilla lock. roll s-off for some fun splash screens(bootanimations)
good luck!

thanx, I`m reading now. so i won`t have to flash a custom rom if I don`t want to right now right?? Im thinking about using the new gingerbread. I see alot of roms contain the sense ui, is that what the stock evo has?? And is their a way to backup the radios too?

if you flash amon 2.3 recovery, itll b/u radios and wimax, etc..
yes, you can root the stock rom and delete bloatware without needing to flash a rom. stock evo has sense ui, yes.

i had a friend help me over msn mess. lol cuz aside from flashing im lost but he had me dl msl reader from the market you nd a code from there for w/e reason hope i helped...

you wont need the msl to root.
you will need your msl if you wish to change epst settings like the slot cycle index or access overload class.

tailsthecat3--what is the vanilla lock and what is roll s-off do and how do i do it. thanx

hahaha sorry. i meant 'roll' s-off like, 'thats how i roll'. meant it in that context. s-off is security-off. it unlocks the nand, bootloader whatever. this allows you to flash radios, pri's, boot animations, etc.
the vanilla lock screen is the two sliding tabs. one unlocks- the other changes your sound profile.

where do i get the amon 2.3 recovery so i can backup my radio & how do i install it using unrevoked 3.21when i root it, do i have to put it on the mem card. also should i flash the stock 3.29.651.5 kernel r keep the one i have?

Unrevoked on mac only supports the snow leopard OS..no way around it.
You'll probably have to do it the long way, or run it from a windows computer.

thank you. i might update to snow leopard so i can do this the easy way

No prob. You could also do it from a windows computer, if you know a friend that has one, since it only takes like 5 minutes; that way you don't have to shell out for that; unless you were looking for an excuse to.

[Q] Impatient T-Mobile Desire User

I've never hacked my phone before but I really do want the Froyo update.
Looking at the guide in the other forum it looks pretty complex but I'm willing to put some time into getting it done.
couple of questions though.. Once i've done it if something goes wrong Can I roll it back to what it is right now? a 2.1 T-Mobile Branded Desire (Bravo)
And also does this affect my service with T-Mobile as the carrier and will they know i've hacked my phone etc?
Yes. Noobish dumb questions but sadly ones i need to get straight in my head first.
You can unroot and go back to stock whenever you like
and when you update to a cooked Froyo ROM make sure you update the radio first
Hi there i know this is my first post but i have been trawling these forums looking about rooting for quite a while now.
Anyway don't worry i used the unrevoked 1 click method and although it was sacry it was really simple and worked a treat. The ability to flash custom roms is really cool, im curretly running leedroids 1.6a rom.
All i can say is read lots of how to's and then when you fell comfortable go for it!!!
BTW im on t mobile also and the new radio has actually improved my signal, i can now get full bars on HSDPA at home whereas i used to get G or 1-2 bars of H!!
I'm on T-Mobile too, and have recently rooted and flashed my first custom ROMs. All I can say is just read up on the superb guides that cover pretty much all the bases. Use the Unr3voked tool for rooting, it really is very easy if you follow the instructions. Then when you want to flash custom ROMs, again just follow the instructions and it's very easy.
Ok great!
Thanks alot for your replies, they've been very useful.
I'm going to have a look at getting my Desire Rooted using Unrevoked atm.
Just a quick question.. what is a GoldCard and why do I need one (In reference to the rooting faq/walkthrough)
Can you follow the instructions detailed in this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=743408
thanks for the alternative solution to getting Froyo on my phone.. One question to this, does getting the OTA Froyo actually work on T-Mobile considering they haven't released it yet?
I'm alittle bit unsure on how it all actually works.
I'm currently trying the unrevoked method atm but if that doesn't work i'll research and try your method in conjunction with creating a goldcard

The OTA Froyo will arrive on Tmob when they release it,,, it would work but its going to be a wait
Cooked ROMs are the way to go IMO, and i hope you acheive root (then its flash happy time)

Dan, ok. right.. I've installed the Hboot Drivers as instructed so now the phone shows up as bootloader when in the Hboot menu and usb connected. but when i connect my phone powered on normally in charge only and usb debugging mode i still can't get unrevoked to accept that i have a phone connected..
i've checked my device manager and i notice that i have something called ADB that isn't drivers properly? is that something to do with this all?
you need to get the drivers, there is a link somewhere on here from memory
ah ha
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=696189
you should be ablet o read through that and find everything, failing that follow whats there for the goldcard method
This is getting out of control now..
I have to download the Android SDK and because i'm in Windows 7 I have to download HTC Sync and then boot to Vista to get the correct drivers?
ok.. so basically before i can use unrevoked i need ADB, USB Bootloader and HTC Sync working?
Im on Win 7 and it works fine, since im not branded i didnt have to make a goldcard, its alot easier then it looks and with a goldcard apparently its the same only you have a funky SD card, just follow and enjoy
Dan.. Are you using Unrevoked? or the method using a different bootloader or whatever?
As per post i didnt need a goldcard (or unREVoked etc) but a mate of mine has used a goldcard and described the method as 'simple as it gets'
so im just going with what he said
Eureka! Unrevoked works now.
Now i'm in the rebooted system where it has options like apply sdcard.update.zip lol.
I suppose i should download a 2.2 froyo rom now.. which would you suggest?
Personally im between LeeDroid 1.7b and SETrom 4.5 both work lovely for me,,, but i do want the bootscreen from LeeDroid (and the R2D2 Sounds) on the SETrom lol
Well, if it helps, I posted my steps on what i did with a stock T-Mobile (UK) device I bought off a friend. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=7422943#post7422943
Was easy and worked perfectly. I'm now happily enjoying AdamG's OpenDesire 3.0.2 ROM and loving it.
EDIT: Oh yeh, used "Gparted" to partition my 16gb sd card for using ap2sd properly and that too was pretty easy and without issue.

you said i should upgrade my radio first?
is that another rom? so i have to flash the radio (i've found the link to it in leedroid's thread) and then flash the leedroid rom?
Also.. I guess this might be obvious but A2SD won't work unless I properly partition the SD card yes? after formatting it.. will that mean losing my bootloader?

[Q] CM6 to HTC sense 2.1

I recently rooted using unrevoked on a mac, and am now running CM6, id like to go to back to my original software which was 2.1 with Sense on Telus. Is this possible, I dont mind if i lose all my contacts and apps etc. I'd just really like to go back to the software so i can rest easy. If so, can someone provide detailed step by step instructions for this as im a big noob. Thanks in Advance.

UGH???
there is no telus one??
Dont suppose you performed a Nandroid backup that you can use to restore the original rom image using some recovery?
If not, check this thread:
http://ip208-100-42-21.static.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=762063
See post #19 (another member packed a nandroid backup of the stock Telus rom) especially and posts on the next few pages of this thread for a link to the original Telus stock radio image for 2.1.
Good luck.

There are a few nandroid backups of telus floating around but they do not include the radio. The current 2.2 radio's floating around do not work with 2.1 but should be able to find something that does work.
When you find a backup of the original telus rom you will need to copy it to your sd card to the location where they are stored... off hand I belive it is..
clockworkmod/backup/ date and time stamp of the backup
When you get the file there you boot into recovery, move down to android and select restore and pick the date of the one you want to restore.
Honestly if you want a sence UI there are many 2.2 htc sence roms on here which are much better then 2.1.
Are you only missing the sence widgets etc? Or do you need it back to original to return it etc?
Thanks i found a nandroid back up on another thread, as well as a radio. If you could find me a 2.2 sense rom, and radio, and tell me exactly how to install from a mac that would be great, cuz im super afraid of bricking my phone, and i dont really need CM6. THanks in advance

Depending on the look and feel and how customized you want there are a few options. Listed in no particular order. I have never tried the Stock rooted one though.
Highly Customized:
AuraxTSense - Has alot of transparancies

Minimalistic: Prob don't want these if you don't like CM6 since they don't come with alot of the HTC Widgets that you may be accustomed to. They are still very good though.

If you are running cm6 you are already rooted with recovery. All that is required to install any of those roms is to download them to your sd card, reboot into recovery, run a wipe system then install zip from sd card, boot and your good to go.
Note: Some of them may require a ext partition on the sd card which I would assume you don't have since cm6 does not need/use it nor did the 2.1 that came with it.
MacLite and the Official 2.2 rooted would not need any changes, just the download.
You should not need a goldcard for anything.
How do i install new radio??????
If you are running CM6 it already uses a froyo radio, you don't need to change it unless you are having issues etc. You do it the same way, download it to the sd card, boot into recovery and say install zip from sd card etc. Same way you would a rom.
Also, when i reboot how long do i wait at the android with the box, before yanking battery

Android with the box? Preferably never, only time its really safe to do so is when its the HTC Logo that never goes away.
so your saying when the android bot with the box comes up just wait it out, and it should reboot into 2.2 sense?

[Q] Gonna take a dive and root my evo.

I've been going back and forth on whether or not to root my evo for the past week, and I think I'm finally up for it. I've done some basic looking around and I believe that I need to follow this method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=765496. I would like to keep 2.2 and not have to go back down to 2.1. One thing that I did notice was the whole HBOOT ordeal. I checked and I have the .97 version. Is there anything special that I need to do before following the instructions in the link above? I plan on using the stock 2.2 rom and possibly experimenting with different roms in the future. I'd say I'm experienced with computers, although I will admit that I'm new to rooting and have yet to toil with coding. If anyone has any suggestions or a better method, I'm all ears.
i would suggest you follow this method instead: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=838448
i rooted my evo with the method that you mentioned but that is an older process, it involves downgrading and then upgrading. even though the process will still work, you will be better off using an updated method.

First off, Jbcarrera thank you so much for the links (and I LOVE your avater, being a huge AC fan)! I just rooted my evo in I'd have to say about 10 minutes. That's a good question for the seniors here, josh. My phone right now (rooted) looks exactly the same as it did beforehand. All apps still there, sense is still on it, and for me, I'm going to use this to turn on my mobile hotspot feature for free. My way of seeing it (and I'm sure others see it this way too) is that android is OPEN SOURCE carriers will lock features down, and rooting just unleashes the full potential. again, thanks to everyone here, I am sure to visit back often for many tips and tricks!
Hmmm if I were to root I'd want just deadstock original froyo 2.2. No sense no nothing lol.
10 mins is all it took? I'm just nervous, my luck I'll ruin my phone lol

firstly what hboot do you have? 10 mins is for anything with hboot under 2.02. if you don't know how to get to your hboot its easy just turn off your phone and let it power all the way down, next your hold the volume down and power button at the same time and voiala you are in hboot at the top of the phone it will state a few things one of them says hboot that number is your version of hboot if it says .97 or below your good to go if not then you will have to root with a more complicated method.

Scared S!ht-less
I recently purchased a White Evo a few weeks ago. I've been reading the forums and in a few months i'll probably look back at this post and LOL at myself. Anyways I have HBOOT 2.02 with S-On. I tried installing Unrevoked when i first got the phone (easier way), but got the infamous "misc error"
I want to make sure I do this right and root the right way. I want to do a complete back up of the stock rom, but i tried doing a recovery with the HBOOT and all i got was a phone with a red triangle. I pulled the battery out and the phone restarted. Got scared.... So how do i do this the right way? Looks like I need to do some sort of nandroid backup, but what and where do i download nandroid? I also want to install this ROM http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=808656 I also don't want any radio problems since i have great 4g service. Do i need to do a backup of radio files since i also want to do this mod http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=696073
Thanks and hope you can help me out.

This thread is now book marked and will probably be referred back to a million times...lol - THANKS!!
I have a ton of questions but I am searching the forums for the answers - I will probably be posting up my own thread when I get done doing my current research.

Exactly if you have .97 or below simply use unrevoked3 one click root works great and installs clockworkmod recovery bootloader. My one recommendation after that is to then download Rom Manager and flash the bootloader to Amon_RA and do a nandroid backup before deciding to flash any roms. Clockwork does not create a wimax image and people have been having issues while trying to flash the wimax. I personally created a nandroid using clockwork then flashed to Amon and did another backup with it. Safe is better then sorry.

Hello, I just got my Evo 4G today, and I'm interested in rooting the phone, it has the Android 2.2 OS on it, and I'm not new to this, I've jailbroken my iphone, and another phone, I can't remember the name.
There is plenty of guides on the wiki, but I'm uncertain which one I should be following due to there is many, could someone lead me to the simplest guide that I can use to root, and possibly flash the phone?
Thank you kindly!

This is a good place to start from.
Yes, I understand that, but which guide should I be using? some of them seem out of date.

What's your software number?
Okay so I've found out I'm on the 0004 Hardware rev, so whats the easist way to do this, and not break anything, and have access to a stock rom, (not a custom rom) but maybe one with root access enabled?
EDIT:
Software number: 3.30.651.3
Hardware Rev: 0004
EDIT 2: I kinda just wanna be able to delete the sprint **** off the phone like Nascar (SP?) and ****, and in order to do that you can only do it rooted so help please? lol
anyone? bump

I don't think.... no I'm pretty sure that he can't use unrEVOked on this device. He has 004 hardware and the latest build which leads me to believe he has 2.02 hboot. Which won't work with unrEVOked. But I'm sure if he followed the post ↑ above mine he has it rooted already.

Do not use unrevoked, it will hose the new phones.
If you turn off your phone and hold vol down while turning it back on it will come up with a white screen and give a hBoot version at the top. That will determine what method you need to use. If it is 2.02 you'll have to use the method made up for that one, otherwise any of the other methods for Froyo should work fine.
Extract to a folder of your choice. I recommend the root of C:\ into a folder of your choice or on the desktop. Make sure you have the drivers installed for your phone (recommend: SDK Drivers, unrevoked hboot drivers) and USB debugging is on.
does anyone have the links to the drivers, and the unrevoked hboot drivers?
14) You Should be in the recovery menu now (green text screen). Do a backup by navigating the menu. Once thats done, follow the on screen instructions and reboot or flash a rom of your choice. Reboot. If you flashed a custom rom cool. If not no big deal eitherway. Do a PRL/Profile update while in the rom after the phone is done rebooting. Your Done.
do I NEED to flash a custom rom? or can I use the stock rom, while being rooted?
Bump, sorry for this..
is the unrevoked hboot drivers this?
http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/windows_hboot_driver_install
also where is the SDK link?
I'm excited to do this, but I don't want to mess up my phone, since I just got it yesterday, lol.
Thanks..

Thanks for this. I found a lot of useful information.
I just rooted my gf's 004 white evo using http://www.wackynoodle.com/hboot202-s_off-V71.zip
from this thread. However, the instructions from illogos in the quotes on page 121 of the same thread would probably make things easier. Make sure to follow all the steps. I have Myn's current warm 2.2 rom running on her 004 evo now and it's buttery smooth.

[Q] Help!!! I Think My Evo 4G Is Bricked!!!

Okay so i rooted my evo using unrevoked 3 everything went fine my phone was doing awesome... but then i get the smart (stupid) idea after watching a video to root with simple root and then use the amen_ra recovery image...guy in the video said it was better cuz clockworkmod didn't really wipe everything (i had clockworkmod) so i reroot my evo using simple root, when it was updating to things failed the radio update and something else...and when it reboots i get stuck on the start up screen...the hTc EVO 4G white screen... i checked my sd card and on a clockworkmod folder a have a backup in there which is the one that was working great before simple root... but i get to the recovery when i select recovery on the bootloader it gets stuck on the screen with a phone and an x on it and nothing pops up....
PLEASE HELP!!!! I'VE ONLY HAD THIS PHONE FOR A WEEK AND A COUPLE OF DAYS!!! I LOVE THIS PHONE AND REALLY NEED IT TO WORK FOR MEDICAL EMERGENCIES FOR MY SON!!!!
PLEASE HELP AND THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!!!!
Google PC36IMG 3.70, put it on your sd card somehow, and restart in bootloader. You should be back to stock.
thanks a lot man... but i ended up doing the fastboot and connecting my phone to the computer and then using the ruu utility for the htc supersonic and it worked but bow im back to all stock brand new.... thanks a lot for your help though...

And now the rooting adventure starts fresh. For future note, you can change what recovery you use through Rom Manager.

So you are back to stock? If you want to root again try the following:
Use Unrevoked
http://www.unrevoked.com/#evo
Easiest method. Make sure you have 30% battery when attempting anything with your Evo.
You can also use the Autoroot method.

Here is a video tutorial on it:

Once you are rooted, I suggest you use MikFroyo or Myn's Warm 2.2 ROMs. Follow the instructions on their respective threads. They are both very stable and very fast and have a lot of nice things in them so you can be available for emergency calls.
Once you are back up and running, if you have any other questions feel free to PM. Tried to reply back to you but you aren't accepting PMs.

Good info sekigah84 and +1 on Mikfroyo and Warm, even though I'm partial to Mik. Click below in my sig to jump directly to MikFroyo. Good luck!

This is what you did wrong.
There are many ways to flash an alternate recovery, and that isn't one of them...
last time I tried simple root was on a friends evo, that bricked his device also... so now Im sticking to unrevoked.
Thanks a lot everybody for your help... so I ended up rooting with unrevoked using the clockworkmod recovery... and I'm using the fresh Evo Rom... and personally I love this Rom its modern and simple... I love it....but I will try mikfroyo and warm 2.2... and I'd I'm not accepting pm is because I think my settings are set to only receive pms from friends so if any want to add please do so... I am currently reading the c programming language and a java book... I will hopefully be cooking soon....
