Hey guys well i crashed the software on my old evo due to rooting lol. IM getting a new one shortly. What Im asking is a REALLY GOOD step by step guide, with the links to download the right files, to root the 2.2 stock froyo it comes with BUT ALSO nand-unlocking it while im rooting it. The reason im asking for this was I had a hard time flashing cyanogen mod 6 after i used the root method from djr3Z from the droid demos website (It was downgrading the stock 2.2 to stock 2.1, rooting 2.1 and then finally going to a rooted 2.2 with Amon Ra recovery) Please help me! Im a noob and i would really appreciate it. Thx in advance!
Nand wasn't unlocked fully with the method you used. Many people had that issue. You can either unlock nand and be done, or wait a few days for the latest unrevoked to come out.

If you followed regaw's complete tutorial, including unrevoked-forever, you unlocked your nand and have the ability to flash custom roms. I know because I did it and am currently running Fresh 3.2. I also made nandroid backups and boot between them.
You can't jump right in to Cyanogen because you're on the wrong hboot. Cyanogen requires hboot 76, and you're probably on 93 or similar from regaw's method. Boot phone holding volume down and check it out.
I can't post links, but you can search the forums for "ENG hboot 76" and probably get the right post on how to get hboot back. Also, I believe it may be easier to find the link in the actual Cyanogen forums.
Keep in mind this downgrades your PRI to 1.3 instead of 1.40. Find the fix for that in a different thread.
Good luck.

Ok thx for that. The only question is when i get my evo and its on stock 2.2 should i do the nand-unlock, will that also root the phone in the process?
By the time you get your phone unrevoked will be out, with unrevoked, you just do a couple of mouse clicks and your done.
Also, unlocking nand is different than rooting. You must be rooted first in order to unlock nand. Just wait for your phone first, unrevoked will make it easy and painless for you.

Unrevoked is a great tool that truly makes it easy. When i rooted without it, I lost everything. But unrevoked doesn't delete anything at all. Will the new one unlock and or will you still need forever and .76 boot img?

Not sure, still no details on their site. I recommend getting the .76 hboot because roms like cyanogenmod wont flash on other versions.

yea i got my evo back that i broke. They fixed it and brought it back to 2.1. I turned it off to charge it. Whne it was done and i turned it on instead of it booting up the sprint music with the 4g symbol, it went into htc with the cursive letters popping up quietly brilliant. Anyone has had this issue? I mean after that it goes smooth im on the interface and all goes well any advice?

Sounds like you have the oldest version of 2.1 like they did a factory reset. No issue. Your phone is primed and ready for rooting. If you are going to run CM6, then I would suggest using Toast's method to root and nand unlock. This will give you the necessary eng hboot 0.76.2000 to run that ROM. Although you may want to do search through the forums for a means of unlocking nand without downgrading your PRI to 1.34_003 (current is 1.40_003). The eng-PC36IMG.zip in Toast's part 2 "How to unlock nand" will downgrade your PRI.

You are ready to rock n roll now.
First Step - Root
http://theunlockr.com/2010/07/20/how-to-root-the-htc-evo-4g-unrevoked-method/
Second Step - Unlock Nand with Toastcfh .76 Eng Bootloader
http://theunlockr.com/2010/07/20/how-to-unlock-nand-on-the-htc-evo-4g/
Third Step - Get ROM Manager
Go to the android market and download ROM Manager. Once installed, open the app and have it flash a custom recovery for you, either clockworkmod or RA.
Have Fun.
I've been going back and forth on whether or not to root my evo for the past week, and I think I'm finally up for it. I've done some basic looking around and I believe that I need to follow this method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=765496. I would like to keep 2.2 and not have to go back down to 2.1. One thing that I did notice was the whole HBOOT ordeal. I checked and I have the .97 version. Is there anything special that I need to do before following the instructions in the link above? I plan on using the stock 2.2 rom and possibly experimenting with different roms in the future. I'd say I'm experienced with computers, although I will admit that I'm new to rooting and have yet to toil with coding. If anyone has any suggestions or a better method, I'm all ears.
i would suggest you follow this method instead: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=838448
i rooted my evo with the method that you mentioned but that is an older process, it involves downgrading and then upgrading. even though the process will still work, you will be better off using an updated method.

With your hboot you can use unrevoked 3.21 and not have a problem them just download Rom manager and get amon ra recovery img and flash that through Rom manager and you have full root nand unlock and a good custom recovery. Plus its ten times easier

Not to hijack your thread, but I'm also considering rooting my phone to stock android, but have never rooted and have a couple questions.
Why do it? And the software (I guess?) That Evo comes with is designed to work specifically with the Evo(right?)...well if I rooted, is that software or whatever its called (yes, I'm a newbie) designed to take advantage of the Evo hardware etc..?
Thanks
Edit: oh and if I don't like it can I undo it like I never did it in the first place?

First off, Jbcarrera thank you so much for the links (and I LOVE your avater, being a huge AC fan)! I just rooted my evo in I'd have to say about 10 minutes. That's a good question for the seniors here, josh. My phone right now (rooted) looks exactly the same as it did beforehand. All apps still there, sense is still on it, and for me, I'm going to use this to turn on my mobile hotspot feature for free. My way of seeing it (and I'm sure others see it this way too) is that android is OPEN SOURCE carriers will lock features down, and rooting just unleashes the full potential. again, thanks to everyone here, I am sure to visit back often for many tips and tricks!
Hmmm if I were to root I'd want just deadstock original froyo 2.2. No sense no nothing lol.
10 mins is all it took? I'm just nervous, my luck I'll ruin my phone lol

firstly what hboot do you have? 10 mins is for anything with hboot under 2.02. if you don't know how to get to your hboot its easy just turn off your phone and let it power all the way down, next your hold the volume down and power button at the same time and voiala you are in hboot at the top of the phone it will state a few things one of them says hboot that number is your version of hboot if it says .97 or below your good to go if not then you will have to root with a more complicated method.

Scared S!ht-less
I recently purchased a White Evo a few weeks ago. I've been reading the forums and in a few months i'll probably look back at this post and LOL at myself. Anyways I have HBOOT 2.02 with S-On. I tried installing Unrevoked when i first got the phone (easier way), but got the infamous "misc error"
I want to make sure I do this right and root the right way. I want to do a complete back up of the stock rom, but i tried doing a recovery with the HBOOT and all i got was a phone with a red triangle. I pulled the battery out and the phone restarted. Got scared.... So how do i do this the right way? Looks like I need to do some sort of nandroid backup, but what and where do i download nandroid? I also want to install this ROM http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=808656 I also don't want any radio problems since i have great 4g service. Do i need to do a backup of radio files since i also want to do this mod http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=696073
Thanks and hope you can help me out.
Hardware version 0004
Build Number 3.30.651.3
Yeah - This Thread is pretty helpful to me as well... Im still reading greek 'cause - although Im no noob when it comes to tech challenges I am a noob to rooting. I taught my self Homebrew for PSP, How to build themes for my PS3, how to write HTML for my website and have always been good at learning this kind of stuff on my own, BBUUTTTT I also like to read ALOT before I do some thing. This thread is now book marked and will probably be referred back to a million times...lol - THANKS!!
I have a ton of questions but I am searching the forums for the answers - I will probably be posting up my own thread when I get done doing my current research.

Exactly if you have .97 or below simply use unrevoked3 one click root works great and installs clockworkmod recovery bootloader. My one recommendation after that is to then download Rom Manager and flash the bootloader to Amon_RA and do a nandroid backup before deciding to flash any roms. Clockwork does not create a wimax image and people have been having issues while trying to flash the wimax. I personally created a nandroid using clockwork then flashed to Amon and did another backup with it. Safe is better then sorry.
Hello, I just got my Evo 4G today, and I'm interested in rooting the phone, it has the Android 2.2 OS on it, and I'm not new to this, I've jailbroken my iphone, and another phone, I can't remember the name.
There is plenty of guides on the wiki, but I'm uncertain which one I should be following due to there is many, could someone lead me to the simplest guide that I can use to root, and possibly flash the phone?
Thank you kindly!

Okay so I've found out I'm on the 0004 Hardware rev, so whats the easist way to do this, and not break anything, and have access to a stock rom, (not a custom rom) but maybe one with root access enabled?

I don't think.... no I'm pretty sure that he can't use unrEVOked on this device. He has 004 hardware and the latest build which leads me to believe he has 2.02 hboot. Which won't work with unrEVOked. But I'm sure if he followed the post ↑ above mine he has it rooted already.

Do not use unrevoked, it will hose the new phones.
If you turn off your phone and hold vol down while turning it back on it will come up with a white screen and give a hBoot version at the top. That will determine what method you need to use. If it is 2.02 you'll have to use the method made up for that one, otherwise any of the other methods for Froyo should work fine.
Extract to a folder of your choice. I recommend the root of C:\ into a folder of your choice or on the desktop. Make sure you have the drivers installed for your phone (recommend: SDK Drivers, unrevoked hboot drivers) and USB debugging is on.
does anyone have the links to the drivers, and the unrevoked hboot drivers?
14) You Should be in the recovery menu now (green text screen). Do a backup by navigating the menu. Once thats done, follow the on screen instructions and reboot or flash a rom of your choice. Reboot. If you flashed a custom rom cool. If not no big deal eitherway. Do a PRL/Profile update while in the rom after the phone is done rebooting. Your Done.
do I NEED to flash a custom rom? or can I use the stock rom, while being rooted?
Bump, sorry for this..
is the unrevoked hboot drivers this?

also where is the SDK link?
I'm excited to do this, but I don't want to mess up my phone, since I just got it yesterday, lol.
Thanks..

Thanks for this. I found a lot of useful information.
I just rooted my gf's 004 white evo using http://www.wackynoodle.com/hboot202-s_off-V71.zip
from this thread. However, the instructions from illogos in the quotes on page 121 of the same thread would probably make things easier. Make sure to follow all the steps. I have Myn's current warm 2.2 rom running on her 004 evo now and it's buttery smooth.
Hi, I new the trying to root my htc evo 4g i just got from sprint. I`m looking at using unrEVOked 3.21 since i have a macbook pro. I was just wondering if it will delete anything off my phone, it says no data wiping. And what does full nand unlock do? Also, It says it flashes a custom recovery rom too, will this change the operating system thats on it now or just the recovery & will the phone stay like it is now until i flash a custom rom to it? Thanx for the help, I`ve been hacking iphones since they came out & now I`m switching to the evo
It will not erase anything or change the ROM that's on there. Your phone will be exactly the same, except it will be rooted.
You need full nand unlock to be able to do most things, so this is a good thing.
Custom recovery is where you go to make backups, and flash ROMs/Kernels/Mods. It's completely separate from the ROM.
Edit: Welcome! Glad you got rid of that icrap . Had an iphone 4 for a few weeks. Nice phones, but no comparison.
thanx for the help, I`m gonna try to root it later on. It should work since i have the newset software i hope? android 2.2, baseband 2.15.00.11.19, kernel 2.6.32.17-gee557fd, build 3.70.651.1, PRI 1.90_003, PRL 60677.I have alot to learn. LOL Yeah, I love the evo, its way nicer than the iphone 4, i cant quit playing with it. just wish u could get the paid apps for free too. I can`t wait for the evo 3d

yes, you can root the stock rom and delete bloatware without needing to flash a rom. stock evo has sense ui, yes.

hahaha sorry. i meant 'roll' s-off like, 'thats how i roll'. meant it in that context. s-off is security-off. it unlocks the nand, bootloader whatever. this allows you to flash radios, pri's, boot animations, etc.
the vanilla lock screen is the two sliding tabs. one unlocks- the other changes your sound profile.
where do i get the amon 2.3 recovery so i can backup my radio & how do i install it using unrevoked 3.21when i root it, do i have to put it on the mem card. also should i flash the stock 3.29.651.5 kernel r keep the one i have?

You'll probably have to do it the long way, or run it from a windows computer.

I am trying to unroot. I used the 2-step method guide but didn't know that using Unrevoked3 actually also used Unrevoked Forever so I skipped step 1 and just flashed the pc36img.zip in step 2. Everything ran perfect except I did more research and realized I should've ran the s-on tool because I am still s-on.
Is it still possible to apply the unrevoked_forever_son.zip using the stock recovery?
Thanks
No....you will need to root all over then flash the s-on tool again and then flash the pc36img.zip. shouldn't take much time.
Thanks for your reply!
Okay I know how to do that but I think I have another problem...because I panicked, I updated to the latest OTA thinking that would automatically unroot me but still says "s-on"
FYI - I did thus because I'm trading in my EVO for the 3D.
The guy at Target told me the phone just needs to be in excellent condition and working to be able to trade my phone in...
Should I even worry at this point?

Ouch. If you took the ota there's no going back. Check bootloader to see if its s-on, if its still s-off you might be in luck to flash another recovery and s-on again!!! Check!!
Id say yes give it to them with s-on at least you don't want something getting traced back to your account.
S-ON is unrooted / locked bootloader. I'm a bit confused here. Isn't that what you want it to be on.
Oh oops...I meant to say it's still "s-off"
Darn keyboard autocorrect!
I'm trying to get it BACK to "s-on" because it's currently "s-off"
Sorry for the confusion.
Do I have any options at all? Thanks for helping out guys!
If it's still s-off just flash amon RA in bootloader and then boot to recovery to flash s-on. You are lucky! Flash the pc36img.zip version.

Make sure you don't get it confused with the other pc36img.zip that's already on your sdcard.
OMG! Thank you so much! That is why this is the best Android forum out there! I will definitely take your advice and I will let you know how it goes. Again...many thanks!

I hope it works dude! Enjoy your 3D if you get it!
If it doesn't work its because you have the ota gb radio and you will need to downgrade it to the 11.19 radio from froyo then s-on should flash.
Remember you need the 11.19 radio to flash s-on. Its also flashed from recovery.

Ok thanks for the tips!
One last thing before I give it a go...I'm only flashing the pc36img.zip file via bootloader. The other zip file is if I was pushing the file using adb, correct? Please correct me if I'm wrong. I don't want to mess up any further lol

Yes that's the recovery. Just flash in bootloader no need for adb. Once you get recovery up delete that pc36img from your sdcard. You will need to grab that 11.19 radio and flash that in recovery then reboot. Once you're back to bootloader go back in recovery then flash the s-on (after the radio).
It should be very easy and wont take that much time.
Cool. I will do that. Glad you were so helpful! I sure hope the 3D phone lives up to its billing...I came from MikG 2.1 and that was a killer Rom. I do know that the developer aamikam is getting that phone too and is going to cook up a Rom once HTC release the unlocked bootloader update.
