[Q] First time rooting, scared to death, have a question!

Hi all,
So I'm on O2 UK with a branded (and I assume locked) Desire.
HBOOT: 0.80
Firmware version: 2.1-update1
Rom version: 1.20.207.3
Bottom line is, I want to root before O2 push out their 2.2 update which will inevitably increase my HBOOT version. I'm a actually a software developer by trade, but I'm scared and want to take this whole rooting process slowly.
I've already created a goldcard but I've also set up my PC ready for the Unrevoked method, so I'll probably end up using that. So my main question is:
- Once I've rooted with unrevoked, do I HAVE to install a custom ROM that very minute or can I simply reboot my phone and use the stock ROM until I feel I'm ready to reflash?

Good evening lodger. I was in the same place s you, o2, new desire and first time boot.
I used the unrevoked method, it took 5 mins and have not needed a gold card.
I have flashed another ROM straight away however my phone re booted in to the original Rom and I could continue to use it with the original o2 Rom but just with root access.

So if I were to just take a nandroid backup at this point and boot the phone normally, I would see no difference until I actually flashed a custom rom with root access?
I'm actually unsure as to whether the phone is actually locked as I've been with O2 for a looooong time and never had a locked phone from them and unfortunately I don't have another sim card to try in it. The only branding is the O2 boot screen, nothing else. So if anyone could confirm the thing about needing an unlock code that would be great.
Sorry for all of the questions, I'd just like to understand the process a little better before applying it to my pride and joy

As of unrevoked version 3.0 it will root your desire and install a custom recovery.
So you'll have a stock Rom that's rooted, then you can nandroid backup and install a custom Rom when ever you want.

I can confirm the first reply you got was wrong. Unrevoked is the easiest and best method to use. It WILL root your phone as well as install a custom recovery. You can then continue to use the stock rom with the benefits of root.

You won't require an unlock code for an o2 branded phone.
O2 phones are normally locked, but iirc you can use Orange sim cards in there too.

The only people who need an unlock code are Orange users.
As for unrEVOked, it will give you root. The handset will be perfectly usable as soon as unrEVOked is finished. You can then choose to stay as you are or play with all the roms in the dev forum.
Personally I'd jump straight into the dev section and download like a geek on speed

So once I'm rooted, I can jump straight onto the market and download titanium backup and get all my stuff backed up, then I'm pretty much good to go right? (I'll feel a LOT happier once I have a backup!)
Any recommendations as to which rom I should go with first? There are a LOT out there and as a newbie to all of this, sifting through them is a tad daunting.
What's the deal with radio updates? Is there anything I should be aware of when applying them? Should they be applied first, before the OS rom or the other way around?
Having already created a goldcard, is it worth hanging onto it? I hear they do come in handy.
Again, sorry for all the questions but I figure it's best to ask them now rather than get stuck further down the line.

It depends what your looking for in a rom. If you want froyo with sense you could try ones by pays, or the leedroid one. If you want plain android, I'd go for defrost by richard trip, or opendesire by adamg.
You will need the latest radio for the new froyo roms for stability and to ensure no echo during calls. The radio is the baseband that you see listed in about phone. It will also increase your wifi and mobile network strength.
When flashing the radio your phone will reboot twice. It is extremely important that you do not interrupt the flashing process and if it looks like it's frozen or whatever, just leave it, and be patient. The radio flash is perfectly safe, but if you do interrupt it you will have an unrecoverable brick!
Titanium will work as soon as you have root, I'd get the paid version if you have a lot of apps, as the free version requires you to confirm each app install one by one, paid version is fully automatic.
Finally, if you want to put your apps to sd card, then the froyo one is rubbish! Most if not all the custom roms use oldschool a2sd which is far better but requires an ext3 partition to be made on your card. To make the ext3 partition use either the custom recovery you have from unrEVOked or download rom manager from the market. The process of creating the partition will ddelete your sd card though so take a backup if needed.
Hope this helps you a bit, and good luck. Once you have tried a few roms you will love it

This is wrong, Orange users must use a compatable radio meaning there's no need to unlock.
As for you, if your phone is locked then you will need to flash a compatable radio like orange users. I'm not sure which radio versions o2 uses so it may be worth googling or checking which radio your running. In future when flashing a custom firmware use one that doesn't have a radio file bundled with it.

Unless something has changed you are incorrect. Any radio updated away from the stock one locked orange handsets. No other networks are affected.
All froyo roms require the latest radio. This is not optional.

Something has changed because I have a locked orange desire, with the latest radio running the latest open desire firmware and have not had a sim lock message.
I wouldn't of said what I did if I wasn't sure

Best custom rom is neophyte 1.6 if you want sense froyo

Well I guess the only way to find out will be to pop a different sim in and see what happens. I haven't yet seen anyone with an O2 branded phone with problems flashing to froyo on my forum travels, but I guess its worth finding out for sure. I'm prepared to pay for an unlock code if need be.
So would I be better off using clockworkmod to flash to 2.2 or Rom manager? I assume I have the choice now?
I've taken a titanium backup so now all I have to do is put the radio and os roms on the root of my SD card, flash, *pray* then restore my apps after it reboots?

Well I finally grew a pair and flashed neophyte 1.6 and i'm proper impressed! Thank you to everyone again for your help and advice.
For the record, I didn't need an unlock code. I just flashed the latest radio and rom straight after each other in clockwork and rebooted. That first boot is a loooong scary one but it was all good in the end

Well,you remind me of myself when I tried to root my Hero...The whole process had scared the **** out of me!Well,until VillainRom booted that is!
I haven't rooted my Desire yet as I was stupid enough to install the 2.2 OTA,but will do something soon enough...UnrEVOked can't do anything with the new HBOOT,can it?

It was by far the scariest thing I've done this year!
Only thing I seem to be having a problem with is Juice Defender + Ultimate Juice (if anyone uses it?). When Juice Defender disables mobile data depending e.g. when the screen is locked, it keeps coming back on by itself which just adds to the battery drain. I've scoured setting after setting in case there's something forcing mobile data back on after JD disables it but found nothing. This used to work perfectly before I switched roms and it's kinda frustrating.
I'll probably have to try a couple of roms until I find one that works well with all my apps.
No, UnrEVOked doesn't work with a HBOOT > 0.80. From what I've read, there is a way to downgrade your HBOOT to 0.80 but with very mixed success rates.

[Q] Gonna take a dive and root my evo.

I've been going back and forth on whether or not to root my evo for the past week, and I think I'm finally up for it. I've done some basic looking around and I believe that I need to follow this method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=765496. I would like to keep 2.2 and not have to go back down to 2.1. One thing that I did notice was the whole HBOOT ordeal. I checked and I have the .97 version. Is there anything special that I need to do before following the instructions in the link above? I plan on using the stock 2.2 rom and possibly experimenting with different roms in the future. I'd say I'm experienced with computers, although I will admit that I'm new to rooting and have yet to toil with coding. If anyone has any suggestions or a better method, I'm all ears.

i rooted my evo with the method that you mentioned but that is an older process, it involves downgrading and then upgrading. even though the process will still work, you will be better off using an updated method.

With your hboot you can use unrevoked 3.21 and not have a problem them just download Rom manager and get amon ra recovery img and flash that through Rom manager and you have full root nand unlock and a good custom recovery. Plus its ten times easier

Thanks! I was hoping that my post would bring about results or suggestions. I think I'm gonna hold off on Rooting until tomorrow night since it's already 3 am and I would prefer doing this with a fresh mind, haha. Thanks again. I'll make sure to post my success!

Not to hijack your thread, but I'm also considering rooting my phone to stock android, but have never rooted and have a couple questions.
Why do it? And the software (I guess?) That Evo comes with is designed to work specifically with the Evo(right?)...well if I rooted, is that software or whatever its called (yes, I'm a newbie) designed to take advantage of the Evo hardware etc..?

First off, Jbcarrera thank you so much for the links (and I LOVE your avater, being a huge AC fan)! I just rooted my evo in I'd have to say about 10 minutes. That's a good question for the seniors here, josh. My phone right now (rooted) looks exactly the same as it did beforehand. All apps still there, sense is still on it, and for me, I'm going to use this to turn on my mobile hotspot feature for free. My way of seeing it (and I'm sure others see it this way too) is that android is OPEN SOURCE carriers will lock features down, and rooting just unleashes the full potential. again, thanks to everyone here, I am sure to visit back often for many tips and tricks!

firstly what hboot do you have? 10 mins is for anything with hboot under 2.02. if you don't know how to get to your hboot its easy just turn off your phone and let it power all the way down, next your hold the volume down and power button at the same time and voiala you are in hboot at the top of the phone it will state a few things one of them says hboot that number is your version of hboot if it says .97 or below your good to go if not then you will have to root with a more complicated method.

yeah now to answer your other question a no sense rom there are a few that do this but to my knowledge no 4g on these roms one is cyanogen i have never tried it but there are very good reports very very few bug almost non existant and then there is virus airborne i belive both awsome no sense roms they're others but i don't know much about them feel free to search the development section of the forum for more info now sense roms i can name some very good ones but i'll let you decide after you decide what to do

I recently purchased a White Evo a few weeks ago. I've been reading the forums and in a few months i'll probably look back at this post and LOL at myself. Anyways I have HBOOT 2.02 with S-On. I tried installing Unrevoked when i first got the phone (easier way), but got the infamous "misc error"
I want to make sure I do this right and root the right way. I want to do a complete back up of the stock rom, but i tried doing a recovery with the HBOOT and all i got was a phone with a red triangle. I pulled the battery out and the phone restarted. Got scared.... So how do i do this the right way? Looks like I need to do some sort of nandroid backup, but what and where do i download nandroid? I also want to install this ROM http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=808656 I also don't want any radio problems since i have great 4g service. Do i need to do a backup of radio files since i also want to do this mod http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=696073

Exactly if you have .97 or below simply use unrevoked3 one click root works great and installs clockworkmod recovery bootloader. My one recommendation after that is to then download Rom Manager and flash the bootloader to Amon_RA and do a nandroid backup before deciding to flash any roms. Clockwork does not create a wimax image and people have been having issues while trying to flash the wimax. I personally created a nandroid using clockwork then flashed to Amon and did another backup with it. Safe is better then sorry.

[Q] Just got HTC Evo 4g, root ??

Hi, I new the trying to root my htc evo 4g i just got from sprint. I`m looking at using unrEVOked 3.21 since i have a macbook pro. I was just wondering if it will delete anything off my phone, it says no data wiping. And what does full nand unlock do? Also, It says it flashes a custom recovery rom too, will this change the operating system thats on it now or just the recovery & will the phone stay like it is now until i flash a custom rom to it? Thanx for the help, I`ve been hacking iphones since they came out & now I`m switching to the evo

It will not erase anything or change the ROM that's on there. Your phone will be exactly the same, except it will be rooted.
You need full nand unlock to be able to do most things, so this is a good thing.
Custom recovery is where you go to make backups, and flash ROMs/Kernels/Mods. It's completely separate from the ROM.
Edit: Welcome! Glad you got rid of that icrap . Had an iphone 4 for a few weeks. Nice phones, but no comparison.

rooting the evo is a piece of easy pie.
i used unrEVOked, its a little quirky for me but it roots, basically one click. have fun. delete htclockscreen.apk(.odex) for the vanilla lock. roll s-off for some fun splash screens(bootanimations)

if you flash amon 2.3 recovery, itll b/u radios and wimax, etc..
yes, you can root the stock rom and delete bloatware without needing to flash a rom. stock evo has sense ui, yes.

i had a friend help me over msn mess. lol cuz aside from flashing im lost but he had me dl msl reader from the market you nd a code from there for w/e reason hope i helped...

you wont need the msl to root.
you will need your msl if you wish to change epst settings like the slot cycle index or access overload class.

hahaha sorry. i meant 'roll' s-off like, 'thats how i roll'. meant it in that context. s-off is security-off. it unlocks the nand, bootloader whatever. this allows you to flash radios, pri's, boot animations, etc.
the vanilla lock screen is the two sliding tabs. one unlocks- the other changes your sound profile.

where do i get the amon 2.3 recovery so i can backup my radio & how do i install it using unrevoked 3.21when i root it, do i have to put it on the mem card. also should i flash the stock 3.29.651.5 kernel r keep the one i have?

Unrevoked on mac only supports the snow leopard OS..no way around it.
You'll probably have to do it the long way, or run it from a windows computer.

No prob. You could also do it from a windows computer, if you know a friend that has one, since it only takes like 5 minutes; that way you don't have to shell out for that; unless you were looking for an excuse to.

Applanet is the free market place. And yes iphones are a kids toy these evos can do anything you can think. Its endless.

rooting my desire my experience

Well after reading that it is unlikely that the gsm desire wasn't going to receive full gingerbread, I decided to root mine.
I haven't bothered with rooting since my G1 as I have been happy with the desire.
Firstly I copied the SD card contents, formatted with fat32. Then added a 1.9GB ext3 with partition manager 10.
Rooting method
I used the unrevoked method. Note to others, you do need to install HTC sync and then un -install. I found that I had to install the modified usb driver several times before unrevoked would proceed with install. But in the end all went well and I attained root.
Roms.
My hboot is 0.93.
I first tried cyangenmod but it just boot looped, I think it was because I hadn't S-off, so I was using the wrong hboot, I couldn't be bothered with s-off so will stick to ROMs which work with 0.93.
I have tried Oxygen Aosp Rom. Very nice Rom, fast with minimal apps, but you just add what you want.
My current ROM is the leedroid desire HD port. I like this indeed with all the bells and whistles of HTC sense. I also added the sense 3.0 add on, quite nice.
So that where I am now enjoying some new features to my desire, which I must admit has not lost any of its attraction since I first bought it 18 months ago.
I thought I had forgotten how to do this root malarky, but it is a lot simpler than when I had the G1, saying that though it was never too difficult if you read the instructions properly.

Root is very simple on desire, got it on the very first one kick

yeah, once youve figured everything out its loughably easy. got my desire back from repair on tuesday and it didnt even take half an hour to free it from the bonds of the branded stock rom and return it to its full cm7 glory

performed my first ever root a few days ago on my Desire and was surprised how easy it was.
i just followed the guide i found on here (somewhere, can't remember where now) and had GingerVillain 2.7 installed in no time.
i'm no technical whizz, but as long as you can follow instructions it's a breeze.
(now just gotta try to understand what the hell a kernel is/does)

much easier to s-off i concur, but for just root with s-on then unrevoked is probably still slightly easier..
I had issues with the drivers first time I ran it through too - it kept trying to windows update search and by that time unrevoked had timed out waiting

rooted, flashed and s off my pvt4 desire few days ago with all the guide in xda. awesome forum. thanks a lots although i faces some heart beat moment...

I did mine the other day, when I was doing the s-off bit, it sat there for half an hour just after the "brick" warning part... I had to pull the plug in the end. Fortunately stock Rom fixed it again. Twitchy was an understatement! Thought i'd killed it...
Turned out to be the usb on my laptop causing the error. Tried it on another pc and it was sweet as a nut.
Long story short, I've ordered a class 10 card so I'm just trying different roms for now until that arrives. Will probably stick to LeeDroid as I like sense.

Im having trouble with some ROM's, I get the "Status error 7" when trying to update from recovery, I do a full reset/wipe etc first ofcourse.
Some ROM's install fine, I dont get it o0

Change recovery to AmonRA or one from my sig if you're S-OFF.

Similar experience here, using unrevoked, tried sense 3 rom's, cm7 and now on XJ's MIUI.
Really brought some life back into the old phone.

[HELP] Problems with Desire after recovery

Hi guys,
I´ve got a stock Desire with Android 2.2.2. (OTA update some two years ago). Some days ago I noticed my camera was not working nor did the flashlight app. After turning off and on the device a couple of times the flashlight started working again but not the camera. Trying to fix what I thought might be a software problem I went into Hboot menu and into recovery and selected reboot. Nothing seemed to have changed until i noticed my battery was only lasting for 4 or 5 hours when it used to last at least 1,5 days. Also, I just noticed my 3G mobile network connection is not working either.
How may I correct this? I've already tried a factory reset but without success. I was just looking at an youtube video from a XDA member about flashing RUU's and thought that it might do it. Is there a difference between flashing a RUU and a factory reset? I'm not very confortable doing it as I've never rooted or flashed any device, but I'm willing to take the chance...

Flashing a ruu is basically reinstalling the stock firmware. Factory resetting is just wiping the data on the phone.
If you want to flash a ruu, check my sig. Download the 2.3 ruu. Don't change the zip name. Take the zip and put it on the root of your sd-card, and boot in hboot. Then select "yes" and wait.
This will upgrade your firmware to Android 2.3.3, which is faster than froyo, but it will wipe all your internal data.

Now it´s clearer to me. Factory reset doesn't correct any system issues.
I already found the RUU i currently have on my phone, but maybe I could upgrade to 2.3. Does the RUU in your sig work for my Desire?
My data are:
Andriod version: 2.2.2.
Baseband: 32.49.00.32U_5.11.05.27
Kernel: 2.6.32.15-gfa401c
Software number: 2.29.405.14
Just a small update concerning the battery issue: it seems to be the battery itself which is the problem. I installed a new one last night and now battery behaviour is back to normal. I will try the old one again though, in order to be sure it's gone.

The ruu in my sig works for your desire. It actually works for almost every Bravo on the market.

I just managed to correct my 3G problem also. I didn't restore the network definitions after the factory reset (didn't know I had to or how it is done ), but after a quick call to tech support it is fixed.
Now I will probably give the RUU update a try and also root and s-off (must resaerch a little more - XDA forum has tones of good info :good...

Hi, some developments and more help needed
Followed the guides above and now my Desire is rooted, s-offed using revolutionary and 4ext recovery is installed and I've partitioned my new 32 GB sdcard with 2GB ext4. Sadly, I've not updated to android 2.3.3 with the PB99IMG RUU, so I'm still with the 2.2.2.
But, even after sd partition, my available internal memory has not increased. What do I have to do to install all new apps on the sd?
If I update now for 2.3.3. using PB99IMG will I lose root and s-off? If I have to flash a new rom, which do you suggest? I'm used to the stock htc sense and don't really want to upgrade unless I have to.
I would really appreciate any suggestions...

Don't use the RUU. You will lose root and s-off. Just install a custom rom, and your storage will increase.

Could you please suggest a stable rom based on gingerbread with htc sense (early versions prefered) and also point out a detailed noob friendly tutoorial for flashing roms? I must do some more research but if you could point me out in the right direction it would be very useful
Sorry to be such a pain in the a**, but I'm just getting started in the rom world and not very tech inclined also...

ealry sense rom? then i would choose either InsertCoin
or Cool Droid v3
ul have no problems with either. if insertcoin links r down, let me know coz i have it on my computer.
