[Q] Evo will not boot, charge, anything after RUU... - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok... This is interesting... I've worked on MANY Evo's over the past almost year and i've NEVER had an issue like this... I was trying to completely return an Evo to stock to try and fix an issue it was having with rebooting like every few minutes... I reverted once using:
RUU_SuperSonic_S_Sprint_WWE_3.26.651.6_Radio_2.15.00.07.28_NV_1.40_release_140444_signed.exe
After which it would only boot into bootloader mode... Nothing else... So... Using Fastboot I then flashed this RUU:
RUU_Supersonic_1.32.651.1_Radio_1.39.00.04.26_release_171253.exe
It got almost to the end and then crapped out while flashing... Then after boot this time it booted with a screen that showed HTC in the middle of the screen with the little triangles around the four corners of the screen... Ok... That flash didn't take... So... For one last try I tried to flash:
RUU_SuperSonic_S_Sprint_WWE_3.70.651.1_Radio_2.15.00.11.19_NV_1.90_release_161482_signed.exe
Got to the end again... Did not flash all the way... Now the Evo will not turn on... Will not charge... Nothing... I've even swapped the battery with a known good charged battery, and nothing... Will not respond in anyway shape or form... My question... Has ANYONE had an issue such as this? Because I haven't... And I'm pretty sure it's BRICKED at this point... But... I figured I would ask and see if anyone could recommend something... Anything...
Thank you in advance for any USEFUL information on the subject...

SRRY you Hard Bricked your HTC EVO I had a friend with that same problem a week ago...u have to get a replacement
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App

Sorry my friend, nothing will bring it back.... take it to sprint, if they can't boot it they can't tell you are rooted or have/had s-off
.........at 8 am today someone poisons the coffee....do not drink the coffee. More instructions will follow.
Cordially,
Future Dwight

Thanks guys... That is kinda what I was thinking... I've probably worked on dang near close to 50 evo's... And I've never seen one do this... It kinda boggles me to how or why this happened... Something tells me that there was obviously a hardware problem that I was trying to fix with software updates, and the Evo had a different point of view like "Hey... F U Buddy... I'm BROKE!" But anyway... I do appreciate the feedback, even though it's bad news...

[Q] My G2 won't turn on. Have I bricked it?

Hello, I'm sorry to be posting on a matter like this, but can someone please help me?
Before you read, let me clarify a few things: I am not a noob when it comes to the rooting scene. I'm an avid Linux user, and I know most of the key commands, I've rooted both my HTC Magic and HTC Dream without using a one-click app like SuperOneClick or Z4Root, I did it all from scratch. I'm well aware of the dangers that come with rooting, and I always take special precautions when it comes to flashing certain stuff. The only custom ROMs I've used are Virtuous and Cyanogenmod.
I've had my G2 for a little less than a full month. I perma-rooted it, I got S-OFF on it, and all that stuff. Today, I was attempting to unroot my G2 using theunlockr's tutorial, however after i finished entering the last mmcblk0p17 command, and I turned the device off, I accidentally tripped on the charging cord, and it came off. The charging LED still was orange even though the cable wasn't connected.
When I tried turning the phone on into HBoot mode, it wouldn't boot up.
When I tried turning on the device regularly, it's not turning on either.
I tried a few battery pulls, and I left the device untouched for a few hours, and still nothing. Is there a chance I bricked my device? Or is it one of the G2's many dysfunctions that I've read about on the community forums when I was searching for a solution to my problems.
All help will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for your time.

Sounds like you bricked it if something happened while it was writing to a partition.
Really? so there's nothing I can do?

I wonder why it won't turn on though. I kind of did the same thing but I had my battery fully charged. I guess since it won't turn on am guessing that something happened during the flashing of stock Rom process but still you should still be able to power up your phone. Did it drop when you triped?

Uh, care to help me out?
In this situation, I would try all that stuff again. If still no luck.. call T-Mobile and play dumb. If the phone is bricked, that's your only recourse and it does work most of the time. GL.
Try pluging the charger for a while and then try to turn it on

Thanks for the advice.
I'm getting my HTC Vision replaced in a few days, after an hour with some ghetto-ass customer service lady
While we're on the topic, does anyone care to explain to me what a "rassclot" and a "battymon" is? because after i was done with customer service, the lady called me a rassclot battymon.
I'm sure I can get T-Mo in hot water for this.

[Q] Bricked from dead battery?

I am hoping you all can help me wihth some troubleshooting on my EVO
The trouble started saturday night (7/16) when I was standing up for a wedding. It was very hot that day, and the phone was acting funny. I pulled the phone out of my pocket late int he day and found the battery was completely dead.
I tossed it on the samsung charger I could find int he car, and it wouldn't recharge. I eventually found an HTC charger at home, and plugged it into that. the screen popped to the white htc EVO 4G screen, stayed a minute then shut off.
I left the phone on the charger, where it periodically booted to the white screen and then would throw itself into a boot loop.
I did finally manage to get it into H boot, and it says TOUCH PANEL-fail in the diagnostics section in the upper left.
I was able to access recovery and wipe it back to the last OTA, but cannot unroot it.
Sometimes the phone will boot to the lock screen and sit there, other times, it will show the lock screen, and then shut off, and other times it will boot loop.
The phone was manufactured on 8/30/2010 and is running h boot 0.76.2000
I have tried using the unrevoked S-on so I can take it in, but no luck.
If anyone knows what is happening or can help me unroot it, i would really appreciate it.
you need to buy a external charger for the battery. once charged it'll start charging again. It ONLY CHARGES while the phone is COMPLETELY booted. look it up on ebay or goto a sprint store and they will FREELY give you a battery to switch it with.
edit I have this thing. http://cgi.ebay.com/Battery-home-AC...553493?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item3f017793d5
But I actually got a package deal. once in a while if you let your phone die too low, THIS HAPPENS. it is completely normal. has nothing to do with rooting or anything. just a bad charging design.
This seems pretty strange . . . I would call a sprint store, or talk to online customer support, and tell them what's going on with the battery. Just don't say that it's rooted, and if it turns out that battery death really is this catastrophic, pitch a fit about it and make someone give you a brand new battery, because having to buy extra equipment just to charge your battery is absolutely not okay.
So, I did tkae it in to sprint over lunch, the guy said they have seen weirdness with the 2.3 update, and then saw the S-Off and refused to go further.
He did recommend replacing the touch panel though, as it booted to lock screen for him.
I did get a battery swap, and the problems persist.
I did open a ticket with HTC, we will see what they will do.

Run the s-on tool and update the hboot to anything but 0.76. Since 0.76 is the engineering boot itll still show s-off even though its not.

Thanks for bringing something useful to this thread. For the record no account details were provided. Go troll someplace else.
Anyway, the phone is now S-ON running H Boot 0.93.0000. Touch Panel-Fail error persists, and the phone is still mostly a brick. It will sometimes boot to lock screen, others not so much. Phone does charge normally now, no need for special charging adapters.
My question to all of you, is would a failed touch panel show the behavior above? The boot failures and so on. Is there a POST process or diagnostic that the phone runs on start up?

This sounds like a problem I had with mine last year. It turned out to be a bad chip and the only fix was to send it in to HTC for warranty repair. They were pretty quick getting it back, but it was still six days with an old MinMo 6.1 phone. Be prepared for the withdrawls if you haven't got a decent standby phone!

[Q] Wildfire S won't boot or do anything at all - no bootloader/splash screen

Hey guys,
writing to you because of a friend's wildfire s (Unbranded!, Software Version was: 1.33.401.2)
She told me that the phone became very slow and so on, so I told her it would be good to update to newest software (if that would not pleasure her, we could try a costum rom).
So I tried it via OTA, but the phone kept telling me it was up to date for days.
So I thought why not updating it the old method via RUU. I grabbed "RUU_Marvel_S_HTC_Europe_2.13.401.2_Radio_47.23a.35.3035H_7.53.39.03M_release_225747_signed.exe" somewhere from the internet, did everything as described there and the update went flawlessly, it told me from 1.33.401.2 to 2.13.401.2 as expected
I got the message that the flash was successful and that the phone needs to reboot. So did it, but now it's just dead.
The only thing it does is flashing the screen up (it's still black, just the backlight's on) and then it switches of again - that happens in circles, on and on - nothing more, no splash screen, no chance to get into bootloader.
It seems like its totally smashed up? I really don't know why regarding the fact that the flash went flawlessly and that everything seemed to fit to me (or did I chose the wrong RUU? - Dont think so )
What will be the next steps? I think there's nothing more I can do, it's HTC's time now or not? Do they repair such devices/cases under warranty?
Thank you guys for your help and please don't forgive me my bad english, it's late here in Germany

I don't recall anyone recovering from this. It looks like the ruu didn't run properly and flashed a bad/corrupt radio If you have warranty, i suggest you go claim it
Problem is, hat about one week ago i changed her digitizer because it was broken. Doing that, i had To remove
The void-sticker.
We all Here know that The issue is Not related to my work (Yes? D) but What will htc do? I guess they wont do anything and just send it back with void warranty? :/

[Q] Dead screen

Screen has gone black. Sometimes i can see everything fine for a second and then it just goes black. I know the phone is still on because I can feel the haptic feedback of the buttons even when its black. My question is how do I unroot my phone so I can return it through verizon without the use of the screen? Any help would be appreciated I am at a loss on this.

Like david_hume suggested I would try getting into boot loader first.
My guess is that its hardware failure. If you no longer have warranty/insurance on your phone you could try taking your phone apart. It could be as simple as the connection for the LCD came loose. My other guesses would be the LCD could have went bad or the connection on the PCB failed. You might want to start looking for a donor phone if you can find one cheap. Or if you aren't up for the DIY challenge it could be time for a new phone. If you decide to try fixing it I highly recommend looking for a good tear down video on YouTube.

The phone is still under the htc 1 year warranty so I could have it replaced under that. My only question is will they be able to tell its rooted by hooking it up to a computer or will they just give me a new one since the screen went dead.

I'm not sure about that. I've never done an exchange through them. I have heard of people getting warranty replacements while their phone is rooted but not sure if that is through VZW or HTC.

[Q] Fried eMMC chip Desire Z

Hi everybody,
After having tried to sort this mess out myself for days now, I feel that I am all out of options. I hate to have to bother you with this problem, because I'm sure I'm not the first one that has a fried Desire Z, but I really hope somebody can help me out. It seems that none of the solutions I have seen to revive this phone work for me.
Okay, so after having made that apology for wasting your time beforehand, let's see if somebody has any idea how to make my phones heart beating again.
The phone in question is the HTC Desire Z. It's not rooted and it's S-On. Honestly, before my phone died I did not even know what H-boot, fastboot, rooting or S-On meant. I had never heard of a bootloader before, but I've tried to educate myself on the matter as good as I could.
Anyway, it died after I tried to install a bunch of Market updates. Google taught me that that is how the phone dies for most people.
During the Market updates the phone froze, and I pulled the battery. After inserting the battery again, the phone got stuck in a boot loop. Pulling the battery yet again fixed that issue, and the phone booted fine.
And that's when I got stupid and decided to run the Market updates again. Long story short: Phone froze again, I pulled the battery, and now the phone is stuck displaying the HTC logo (without the "'Quietly Brilliant" slogan underneath) on a white background.
First thing I did was calling HTC support, just to find out the phone is not under warranty anymore. So I'll have to mess with it myself, hopefully with you guys trying to hold my hand during the process...
The phone will still boot in H-boot.
If I select FASTBOOT I can still communicate with the darn thing when it's hooked up to my computer's USB-port. So at least that part still works. I installed the Android SDK on my computer so I have fastboot on it.
Selecting RECOVERY will make the phone reboot. After displaying the HTC-logo for about 5-10 seconds it will display a fancy looking icon of a phone with a green arrow for a couple of seconds (I can try and make a photo of it if anyone wants to see it?), and after that the screen goes dark. Then it will vibrate 7 times, and that's it.
Selecting FACTORY RESET just instantly freezes the phone in H-boot.
I did find a couple of topics on this forum that looked helpful, but I just cannot figure out how to make it all work.
Here is one that looked very promising:
"[GUIDE] Booting an Android System when only Recovery is at your disposal"
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1572924
However, my problem is that Recovery is not at my disposal.
And that is where I got stuck. What is also not very helpful is that my phone is not rooted and it's S-on, and I can't find out how to root a unresponsive phone with which I only have FASTBOOT access. I don't even know if that is possible at all.
So yeah, again:
A completely stock Desire S with a fried eMMC chip and no working recovery in H-boot...Any ideas, or am I just really, really screwed? With my own research I've come to conclude the latter, but I so sincerely hope someone can prove me wrong...
EDIT:
For what it's worth, here is the H-boot information

Hey, thanks for the reply. You are kinda confirming what I had already found out.
Guess all that is left to do is to take a hammer to my Desire Z brick, and to start to learn how to live life without a cell-phone and internet everywhere you go. Well, I guess we all did that 10 years ago.
Did you try the ruu... unlikely but last hope

Thanks for your reply, demkantor.
No, I have not tried the RUU. And I'm sorry for having to ask this, because I'm sure you have answered this question a million times already, but can you explain to me what you mean by that?
I did run the "fastboot oem check_emmc_mid" command, and my chip showed up as the Samsung. So that doesn't look good.
It stands for ROM utility update or something like that, its what HTC uses for a full update to their phones when not done through an ota.
the thread I linked you too has a heading like stuck in boot loop not rooted
There I suggest trying to boot in same mode, factory reset or flashing latest ruu, unfortunately with a stock phone there isn't much else to do. But if all fails it more or less insures you have the bad chip and it has lost the ability to read and write to it.
Instruction to flash the ruu or in the HTC website, link in that post to it, just simple fastboot commands

Thanks again for replying so quickly, demkantor.
I will look at that thread, and try flashing the latest ruu, and report back here. Although I guess we both kinda know my phone is completely dead already, at least I want to have tried every possible solution for a stock phone.
I'm just kinda upset with this whole business. This was not a cheap phone when I bought it, and all HTC has to say is: Sorry, your warranty ran out in August. There was a 16 month warranty on this phone, but of course the darn thing decided to die right after that.
I can still send it in for repairs, but I'll be looking at 250 dollars to have it fixed. That's money I don't have.
Any other comparable phone I can get on ebay will run about 150-200 dollars, and that's also something I was not expecting to have to shell out, especially with Christmas coming up.
And because I don't have a back-up cellphone, and no land-line, it just means that I'm pretty much completely cut off. I mean, on one hand it's really peaceful not to get any phone calls, but it's mostly just outright frustrating.
I can't believe there is not an extended warranty or something on these phones, because I'm sure that HTC is very well aware of this problem by now. Although the lady from HTC-support told me that I was the first person ever she talked to that had this problem.
Oh well, I'm just venting right now, so I'll stop typing, start flashing the ruu, and report back here in a little bit.
And thanks again demkantor, for your willingness to reply to questions that have been asked a million times already...
May I suggest buying a cheap g1 to have as a backup incase another similar thing happens, they are quite inexpensive now and are probably one of the best made smart phones, not to mention still somewhat developed on. Also consider finding another g2 or mytouch 4g slide if you want a qwerty, or for more money the samsung relay 4g seems promising.
For me personaly, although my opinion on htc has dropped tremedously over the past year or two, the g1 and g2 are just amazing phones for their time and to this day I can not find a better phone to suit my needs then the g2/dz regardless the price.
If you are in desperate need I used to buy and refurbish to sell both g1s and g2s (along with other phones) but have stopped selling for a few months due to school and getting married and all sorts of personal things keeping my side buissness moving (also fix and repair cars, motercycles etc) but if you can't find or need a reputable seller feel free to pm me as this is the last week of finals ill probably do some more of this soon

Hi demkantor. Well, to be honest, after this fiasco of a phone I'm done with HTC. Needless to say I will never want to buy another Desire Z, because who's to say that one is not just gonna die soon? Also, my previous phone was a TytnII (also made by HTC, running Windows Mobile 6.1), and that thing was incredibly slow out of the box, and gradually got worse and worse over time. Apparently the Tytn II has a graphics chip that HTC never bothered to make a driver for, hence the screen is incredibly slow when doing things like scrolling through a menu or webpage.
HTC has now proven twice to me that they don't give a crap about their products, so neither am I going to.
That being said, I did try to flash the RUU with the link you provided, but it doesn't work. The updater tries to reboot the boot-loader and that makes my phone freeze up.
So I guess that's totally it then? Phone is dead, and that's that.
Yeah that's too bad, phone is shot. The g2/dz had two different chips, one great and one prone to failure. I have been liking the build quality of Samsung a little more as of late, but the older HTC's do seem better. The g1 suggestion is just to have a cheap sturdy backup, but you will probably want a more advanced phone for daily use.
There are always one of the various nexus models, but none come with a hardware keyboard. So if you need one and want to stay away from HTC consider the relay 4g by Samsung.

Thinking about uploading that to Youtube, just to see how many kids out there will reply with a: "why did you kill a perfectly good phone?..."
If only this one would have come with the Sandisk chip. Who would have guessed it was possible for the eMMC to die this quickly? Little over a year and a half old, and always babied the darn thing. Not a scratch on it, never dropped...
Thank you for the G1 suggestion, but I'd rather save up a little longer and then buy a phone I do like. Guess I might have to do without the qwerty-keyboard in the future, because there are not a lot of phone out there with that option anymore.
I'll take a look at the relay 4g by Samsung. In the meantime, I did send you another PM...:good:
EDIT:
Yeah, the 4G looks like a nice phone, but is:
1) Way out of my budget
2) It's a T-mobile phone. I have an AT&T simcard...
Well, I can't believe there's no way out with HTC?!?!?!?
My backup phone is a brand new htc desire Z. ( I guy from my cell pohone provider get rid of it since they are ''old'').
Played some months with it, take it when my daily desirez had some trouble with custom roms...
So my unused back up desire z with stock rom (no-rotted), just get what you described!! Tried everything, looks like fried emmc.
Got the 7 times vibrate, htc logo, freeze on ruu restore...
what a waste...
Hi oVeRdOsE. Yeah, it's just outright ridiculous, how quick these phones with the bad eMMC's die. And HTC just doesn't care.
RUU !
RUU option from fastboot is your best chance of *trying* to save it !!
Else you could try and replace/repair the eMMC yourself !!
the Desire Z is still better then others in the market ! try ur best to save it !

I understantd, but still, my dz is almost new...
RUU is just running for ever, do nothing.
with a fried chip your emmc can not read/write to some or all partitions making an ruu not an option. The only thing to do is boot from sd if you were rooted, if not time to get another phone, it sucks but yeah...

Is eMMC replaceable?
If you own a factory machine to solder a new one in, if you were super good at it, soldering by hand would be extreamly difficult and getting a new chip to solder in would be hard as well. Then you would need to JTAG the new firmware onto the new chip... I'd just buy a new phone or buy a new motherboard

Asking cuz i saw someone in forum have replaced it for like a 15 euros.I wouldn't try cuz i'm to nervous and will send it to the wall as a result If it was bigger...well i could make it. I know a guy who can do it. Actually he root my phone, cuz i didn't do it right after i bought it and didn't want to lose everything on phone. He has this little toolbox, that attaching to sim port and root in a 5 minutes or less
Yes, you could replace the eMMC chip, but to do BGA soldering you need special equipment and you need to be pretty skilled. Because of the known problem with the HTC Desire phones, the Chinese jumped on the bandwagon and are offering eMMC chips that come pre-installed.
This basically means that you don't need JTAG to put new firmware on the chip. After soldering it'll boot straight up.
You can buy one of these chips here, for example:

Another fun fact is that the replacement chip is 8GB. But, as others said before: You need skill and the right equipment. I have a soldering iron and some basic skill, but I'm not even going to attempt to do this.
