[Q] Upgrading 2.1 -> 2.2 - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all, I'm new here and I'm having trouble finding some information.
I have 2 epics, with original software minus some bloatware I deleted via the USB shell. I have contacts which are on the phone (not on google). I'd like to upgrade to 2.2 (probably Syndicate ROM), but I want to make sure my plan is solid before I start.
My plan is:
Install USB drivers from Samsung.
Backup contacts/apps/settings using some backup software. Perhaps Titanium Backup?
Attach phone to PC via USB.
Copy Syndiate to SD card via USB.
Install ClockworkMod using the one click software.
Reboot into CWM.
Select "Install ZIP from SDCard" in CWM
Use backup program to restore apps/contacts/settings.
Is this a good plan? Am I risking my contacts? Is there a simpler way to do this?
Thanks so much!
Update: Having gone through this now, this is a better plan.
Install USB drivers from Samsung.
Backup contacts/apps/settings using Titanium Backup. Batch mode / "backup all use apps + system data"
Export contacts from Contacts app, as this is good to have.
Attach phone to PC via USB.
Copy Syndiate to SD card via USB.
Install ClockworkMod using the one click software.
Use Odin to flash EC05 modem (per Syndicate instructions). This is a "phone" flash, not "PDA".
Reboot into CWM.
Select "Install ZIP from SDCard" in CWM
Reboot into Syndicate
Sign into Market
Use adb to copy additional stock apps from Syndicate stock apps such as alarm, memo.
Use TB to restore apps/contacts/settings.

Your plan is sound but you need to be rooted to run Titanium so you will need to root first. You can use Mybackup Pro for 30 days without root.

[Q] Help Accidently wiped sdcard

Help a friend accidently wiped her sd card how do i get it mounted to computer thru usb to transfer an old nandroid for her or a new rom? and is there anything else I need to do?
Just plug the phone via USB to a computer. It should recognize it automatically. If not, reboot into recovery, select the MS-USB option and wait for the drive icon to appear on your computer. Afterwards, transfer any file you want. As for the nandroid you mentioned, please make sure it is a backup made from her device ONLY! If you're transferring a backup made from a different EVO, and your friend decides to restore it on her device, she will be asking for trouble.

Yes I knew only to use one of her old ones couldnt get the phone comp to reconise the phone so i used an alternate sdcard and my phone to dl and flash a new rom then backup and restore her old nandroid.
before writing any new files on the card, I suggest that you try Recuva, I managed to recover all the files on my card when it got wiped a while ago (though I still don't know how it happened!).

New Galaxy Nexus Unlock/root/mod/restore

Hi all, I know there are separate threads for all of this but I'd really appreciate if someone could just clarify if I'm doing this correctly. I've just ordered a new uk Gnex (wahey), and am in the process of backing up my apps (titanium backup) and copying my SDcard contents onto my PC, for when the Gnex comes. This is my game plan:
1) Use gnex toolkit to unlock bootloader, root and flash CWM
2) Flash rom of choice (cm9 nightly)
3) Flash gapps
4) Flash kernel
5) Copy old sdcard contents (pics, songs, titanium backup folder etc) from my Nexus one into the /data/media folder.
6) install titanium backup and restore apps and data (not system)
7) Sync all contacts etc
8) ???
9) Profit
Am I missing any steps here? Thanks in advance.

The only thing I would add is to make sure you know how to use fastboot to recover in case you need it, while the gnex toolkit is nice I think it is a must to make sure you have the fastboot drivers working from a command prompt in case you need it.

Well I used fastboot to unlock by nexus one and root it and flash radios...Only the basics however. Hopefully that's enough
Thanks!

Be sure that you have the same version of ICS running before restore. Data of contacts can be stored differently. I had that problem coming from 4.0.1 to 4.0.2, causing a bootloop. Contacts can better be synchronized through your Google account.

I would do it all manually, not using the Toolkit so you undertsand how the phone works and what you're doing.
Unlock the bootloader, flash CWM, flash SU, erase the file which causes the recovery to be overwritten, flash CWM again, backup, enjoy.

Are there any advantages to doing it manually rather than the toolkit. I feel comfortable knowing what's happening in the background, just thought the toolkit would be easier than doing it manually?
rooted yesterday, included the links I used.
I've rooted a Droid X2 by hand before, which was fun, but I didn't feel like doing it all manually again. What's important is that you learn the inner workings of the OS, especially the general workflow of the bootstrap process.
I rooted my gnex-toro yesterday, using the GNex Toolkit by mskip. I did this after reading several step-by-step walkthroughs of the process. mskip's tool works quickly and efficiently. Once I had the ClockWorkMod Recovery installed, I was able to replace 4.0.2 with das7892's build of 4.0.4 IMM76D. I then replaced Verizon's Radio APKs with the versions from the leaked 4.0.4 IMM30B. It runs so well now. I'm getting about double the battery life, and strong signal all around. Also, das7892 introduced me to the Apex Launcher, which is pretty awesome.

[Q] How to update a ROM and keep apps/game saves etc?

Hi, I'm new to rooting and to this forum. I have a HTC Desire that I am using that I rooted yesterday. The process was quite simple and I installed the Evervolv 3.0.0p10 - Jelly bean for HTC Desire yesterday and everything seems to run smoothly (apart from the camera but that's because its still pre-alpha) but when a new version comes out I don't know how to flash the next update without losing all my apps and game saves. I understand that you need to go into boot into Recovery mode then go into Clockwork Recovery but how do I backup all my apps? What I don't want is to restore to an older ROM with the apps on but what I do hope will work is somehow I can get the apps back on the new version of the ROM. Can someone help a noob here on how to do so please
Thanks!
Use titanium backup or mybackup from playstore to backup apps+data then save the backup on ur computer.

also, before you flash any rom update, or any flashable zip, make sure you nandroid backup!
in clockworkmod: backup and restore -> backup
nandroid backup saves your phone's EXACT state: apps, contacts, texts, homescreens everything, so you have a safe point to restore to in case something goes wrong.
these are stored in sdcard/clockworkmod/backup, you can also move these on PC for safekeeping (plus they start to take up a lot of space).

Thanks I did install Titanium backup and I redid backups for everything (I think) because it says "1 backup" underneath all the apps. What I don't understand is how I can save it onto the computer and how to restore everything, such as the apps onto the new ROM I have flashed onto the phone?

Plug ur phone into computer, select connect as disk drive and u can browse through ur files on sdcard and just copy the backup to computer or if u have a card reader, use that and do the same. To restore the apps on new rom just put the backup back on ur sdcard and download titanium backup from playstore then u can restore them. Never used titanium backup but im sure its pretty straight forward. Maybe eddiehk6 will give better instructions.

[Q] Re-installing nandroid image via toolkit for N7100

Hi,
I am new custom ROM's. I have used Ubuntu for just under 1.5 years. I need to re-install my back up because the google authenticator app data did not transport over and now I have lost access to my dropbox account (2-step authentication).
Here's what happened.....I have an international note 2 N7100, I had build 4.1.2 JZ054K DLK7
I used the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 Toolkit to make a nandroid image of the phone's memory and saved this to the C:\SAmsung Galaxy Note 2 Toolkit/backups/back Ups/2013-03-10.05.53
I gained root access and installed super user. I also installed TWRP custom recovery. I downloaded cyanogenmod 10.1 (4.2.2) NIghtly 2013-03-09 and gapps and transferred them to my external SD card and launched those from TWRP. All went well and I am tre impressed. I donated 5 pounds to the toolkit developer.
Now when I try to restore my nandriod back up, I choose build option "04" (the same as I originally chose), restore nandriod back up, then when it asks if I am using a custom ROM with insecure boot image? I say yes to that, it then lists my nandroid back up, which I select. Then I select "copy to internal storage."
Now it just sits on "waiting for adb", I have enabled debugging in developer options.
Any help is appreciated.
Just a quick question: are you sure that you have installed either Kies or the Samsung USB drivers?
EDIT: Try this:
Shift-Right click on the directory with adb.exe.
Select open command window here.
type "adb devices' w/o quotes, press enter.
Does it list any devices?
Can you see phone in my computer?
If yes just copy over the backup to sdcard and restore via cwm or philz.

I have TWRP currently. What directory do the back ups need to be in?

OK I found out the directory format that it needs to be in for TWRP to find the files, but it does not recognise the contents and won't run.
I think I need to flash to a 4.1.x as 4.2.2 has compatibility issues with toolkit.
